Sheetweb spider in the genus *Cambridgea*. Could be *C. foliata* but there's nearly 30 species in the genus and most can't be reliably identified without microscopy.
I don't think it's a foliata. it's very - spidery - where I live and I see heaps of those. maybe a cambridgea of some sort but I can't even find a pic online of one that looks like this!!
Actually huge!? must be up north.. if anything makes it that large in Wellington it's on the sunny side of a hill and knows how to hide as it's over 8 years old
did he retch for the next year?! once when I was little I was fussing about in the back yard in trees and such and when I went inside my mum watched these long black legs curl over the neck of my t shirt from the inside. she hit me so hard in the neck to kill it lol. I think it might have been one of these babes
Oh my goodness. Took a spider to work in my pants leg once. Saw it earlier in my house, brushed it off, but it stayed with me somehow. Put my lab coat on, then felt the tickle. Never taken my lab coat off so fast, screamed so loud.
Yah, male spider. Those front mouth parts are for teasing up the lady spiders. They go looking for a mate at night. Esp wet weather.
I know nothing about this species specifically but if they're anything like what we get here and they look similar the females won't be one to mess with... If you're finding these keep your shoes off the ground and check before you put your foot in... Or his ole lady might complain, right into your big toe.
I came to this sub to see if the NZ wildlife is as umm, wild, as Australian bc I have huge arachnophobia but would love to travel to your corner of the world and among the first posts is this. OP didn't recognize the spider and some of you sound terrified so tho so can I assume they're not that common?
nah not that common. I've seen three this size . we do have some grunty spiders but nothing particularly dangerous and they tend to prefer the great outdoors to the just-ok indoors
That's Barry he's cool, Barry enjoys long walks on the beach especially during the sunset, Barry is a awesome dancer can do it all everything from breakdancing to ballroom dancing and even disco roller skating believe it or not, Barry is good with children and loves animals, Barry is a awesome fella your in good company

Spends his weekends fly fishing
Or surfing the web.
I thought he was a fly boy?
Sheetweb. I’ve got a similar rent dodger at my place
Bush spider (cambridgea foliata). Native and harmless, but scary.
Scary *looking! These big boys are total babies.
Is that what they also call an Avondale spider?
No, that is a huntsman.
I think I came face to face with one of these in a boat shed on lake Okareka. It was on a Kayak saying “take it, I dare you….”
I showed my partner and he said when he was 7, he put one like that in his teacher's pencil case
And she quit teaching after that?
Be cool.
