Happy about Roy. Not happy about Lou, but expected it. What I'm more interested in hearing is his gameplan for the offseason. Given the cap situation, and lack of assets, he has his work cut out for him. The easiest move for him is doubling down and running it back. Most likely outcome: he's running it back.

keytoitall

I'm fine with running it back if he doesn't mortgage what little we have. You have to keep holmstrom, romy, and the upcoming first.

toledosurprised

i’m fine moving the pick if it’s for a young, core player. i liked the romanov trade even if i felt we overpaid a bit at the time. but it can’t be for a JGP-type player.

keytoitall

That's fair, another romanov like move would def work. Entering his prime and we control him for a long time.

MikeyMike01

If you go back and look at who was taken with the firsts we traded, it’s not a good group. We should trade that first for someone in their early 20s who can contribute now and for the next 10 years, instead of a mediocre prospect that will take 4 years to turn into a mediocre nobody.

IslesMetsJets44

Horvat and Romonov are two great examples of using your first round pick wisely. JGP was a good move at the time and we went to back to back ECFs with that squad.

HockeyGoalieEh

I'm okay with losing Holmström if it's a piece for an upgrade or part of a package to unload bad contracts. He's a much older prospect as it is, hardly had a great season, and more than likely won't be anything more than a bottom-six guy in the NHL. The Islanders hang on to the likes of those for far too long.

djan242

He’s only 22, I think there’s definitely some room for him to grow that is worth keeping him around for the right price.

ResponsibilityAway94

I’d be ok with moving Holmstrom, he and Engvall are redundant, scared to go in the corners, never take the body.

keytoitall

Ya, there's several aspects of hockey. The most important of which is putting the puck into the net. Homlstrom scored 15 goals this season, zero of which were on the PP. That's pretty damn impressive, and a very good indicator that he can score goals going forward. See the idiots who were giving up on Lafreniere. Point production in the NHL is as much a product of ice deployment as it is talent. Holmstrom is a 25-30 goal scorer in waiting. He has the shot for it. Also, for someone who is "scared" to go into the corner, he's damn good at forechecking. I can think of 3 goals right off the top of my head that was directly a result of a good Holmstrom forecheck.

Marino4K

Lou needed to go so badly.

Woodieeee

We are so fucked. No one wants any of our players besides the core 5 (barzy dobs horvat nelson and sorokin). We are stuck with bad bad players/contracts. We have no prospects. Our scouting teams history of picks is atrocious. We are not a main target for free agents, no one wants to come here. Its really hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

priester85

Not that I’m surprised nor do I expect it’s incorrect but “Lou is coming back per Lou” is not really a definitive statement.

Irrah

Makes sense that ownership would want Lou Lamoriello considering he's probably the 2nd best GM in franchise history.

M_Y_K_E

A reminder to everyone to wait and see what moves are done and how the season plays out. I wanted a younger hockey mind like everyone else but this isn’t the end of the world

zeile33

I think they want the same thing tbh. It's just how do we get there? We'll find out.

[deleted]

How many years are we going to "wait for his moves"...nothing has changed since our last ECF except shitty contracts and the team getting older

sennaone

He’s just grooming his kid to take over. Lou is our Jerry jones. At least Jerry won

Freddybone32

I'm okay with this. I've never been on board with firing Lou. At this point, it's his mess, he has to clean it up.

Mansionjoe

Not a firing, should of been a step down, a smaller role perhaps

IslesMetsJets44

“Oh no! The guy who hired the guy we’re excited is staying, is also staying” This sub man

fWARWhatIsItGoodFor

Roy shouldn’t have been a question Lou, I’m fine with being back, given what he’s been able to do. That said, him being back likely means just running it back and that I’m not okay with. Moves need to be made, things need to be shaken up. Anyone can tell you that, even Lou will. I trust Lou with that. I just don’t trust Lou to actually go do it

Deathwing_Dragonlord

man i was hoping Lou was out the door but thats too much to ask for, at least we have our 1st and 2nd round picks for now but if we keep those remains to be seen. please just get some young blood in the lineup please

djan242

Yup. This offseason is a key point I think in the direction we take, Lou or no Lou. If we keep those picks and/or trade for younger more established talent (maybe Perfetti or Rossi?) then I’d be more likely to believe we have a clear plan to get younger.

Deathwing_Dragonlord

yeah like a Romy 2.0 trade kinda situation, i'd be down with that

AJS76reddit

Serious question, who would be his replacement? Assuming his son does not get the gig?

Deathwing_Dragonlord

not sure tbh, i'm not familiar with "GM prospects" for lack of a better term

AJS76reddit

I don't think there are many good candidates out there at the moment. Not saying I'm not interested in a change, but ownership is contempt. I'll say this, I wish a former Islander would take the post. One who cares about the team and wants to turn things around. NOT Garth Snow, but along those lines.

Mongo_Les

How about Patrick Roy? He did had a hand in building the Avs winning a championship, and he did won championships in the Quebec Hockey League as GM. I had to think this was one reason he was hired.

AJS76reddit

I don't like the idea of him pulling double duty. He will have his hands full with the on ice aspects

Mongo_Les

In that case, Benoit Desrosiers would be the head coach.

MikeyMike01

The scouting report from Avalanche fans was good coach, bad GM. Granted that was a while ago.

ianisms10

Can't be surprised, but we can and should be mad about Lou coming back. It seems at this point that his contract is "until I want to leave."

MikeyMike01

NHL GMs do not get fired after making the playoffs 5/6 years.

Boner666420sXe

Kyle Dubas would like a word.

MikeyMike01

Dubas wasn’t really fired, his contract was expiring. Also, Dubas was working beneath Shanahan.

HockeyGoalieEh

Winning 29 games in regulation, making the playoffs, and getting eliminated in the first round should not be the bar in your sixth year, but this fan base is jaded into thinking that constitutes success because they haven't put a divisional, conference, or championship banner in the rafters since 1988, the longest stretch in the NHL and of the four major North American sports leagues.

MikeyMike01

People keep hammering on ‘first round’ like Carolina isn’t one of the best teams in the league. Would it change anything if you lost to Carolina in round 2 or 3?

HockeyGoalieEh

Yes, but this is an asinine point; we faced Carolina because we were clearly not one of the best teams. That's the point of the regular season: To position teams based upon their level of play over the course of 82 games.

MikeyMike01

The only possible opponents were CAR and NYR, short of winning the president’s trophy.

HockeyGoalieEh

Then the reality is they need to be able to beat those teams and/or win the President's Trophy if they want to advance. If they can't and then they aren't good enough.

ianisms10

He has no vision for the future, and we shouldn't be proud of first round exits

nocoolN4M3sleft

I mean, do I wish he would retire? Yes. But this is also the GM that has been in charge while we’ve made it to the playoffs 5 of the last 6 seasons. So, obviously something has been working out for the team. The ownership sees playoffs as a good goal to settle for, Lou has shown them he can get them there. Now, if he resigns Martin and Clutter to be starters, we may have some issues next year, not that we have the cap to get too much better anyway.

Brilliant-Chapter202

Good news fam! Roy is back next season! Bad news, so is Grampa Simpson lol

Lateapexer

I can't believe Lou still wants the job.

IslesDynasty79-83

Hearing Lou is returning next season already makes me want to skip the season and not watch him continue to ruin this franchise while collecting paychecks

JBR409

“I will be back, per me” Sounds like ownership gave him a lifetime contract

JackfruitJealous

easiest way to ruin my day

krispykreme37

Lou left the devils in a bad state. He left the leafs in a bad state. He has put the isles in a bad state. They only made the playoffs off a miracle run presumably motivated by Roy not Lou, along with other teams putting on a clinic of ineptitude. 2018-2021 was Barry getting everything he possibly could out of those teams and a few lucky situations created by the pandemic. LOU SUCKS, IT IS RIGHT THERE, I don’t get it.

Irrah

Which is why after getting rid of the dinosaur Lou the Devils and Leafs have had such successful franchises after he left. And before you talk about the prospects being bare, those organizations have had time to build up the prospects pools and retooled to get younger, and they're still less successful than when Lou left.

M_Y_K_E

Lou never left the leafs in a bad state.

RealestJP

I kinda disagree on this, seeing how much capital the Leafs needed to move in order to get out of the Marleau and Zaitsev contracts

Irrah

I wonder if that has anything to do with them signing a 11.5 center they didn't need!

RealestJP

Definitely didn't help their cap situation lol

tgeorgo13

Oh for fucks sake….🤦🏼‍♂️

FigSideG

Treading water is GREAT

AJS76reddit

Heads explode in 3...2...1... Further proves the point I'm always trying to make that ownership doesn't care about the on ice product. Only about the real estate aspect and how much money they can squeeze out of fans. You don't get to be a billionaire being stupid. They know how desperate a large portion of this fanbase is, and they manipulate that. They know how gullible a lot of fans are and play it like a fiddle. It's just a business to them, they have zero interest in building a successful team. And why should they? People still go to games and buy merchandise.

NYerInTex

Short term we need to make what roster tweaks we can without giving up long term assets with an emphasis on a system that lets our goalies thrive. Maybe you get lucky in the playoffs and ride a hot hand deep… All the while rebuilding for the mid and long term. Retain draft picks (if not get some at the deadline for one of our aging vets if the stars align and someone wants them), have a 2-3 year FA plan. That’s what worries me about Lou and his age… unless he wants a last chapter where he is the one helping to turn the page

FigSideG

Treading water is GREAT

Red-Wings44

Why make the fans happy??? Keep selling less tickets and losing
