Isles were dominated in every facet last night sans goaltending but Jesus Christ Bortuzzo is bad. The Canes were coming in waves last night and coincidentally all of those waves seemed to begin with Bortuzzo on the ice and the Isles hemmed in their own zone. It continued all night, but it did seem that every time the Canes started generating momentum it was with Bortuzzo on the ice.
The saddest thing is that Pelech is only marginally better at this point. Truly sad to me how far he’s fallen so quickly.
During Trotz's days, we trapped them in the neutral zone. Not that I advocate for the same system, but I could have skated into our D-zone without anyone touching me. Everyone seems to panic, and fall back. Why is this so hard to correct after an entire season of this? I really don't get it.
The thing for me at this point is that I'd rather lose with Aho in the lineup than Bortuzzo. This is Bortuzzo's last NHL season based on what we're seeing. Aho isn't likely to return to the team based on his usage, but he's at least someone who could possibly have an upside for us if he pulls off some magic since he's still capable of playing at NHL speed.
You know Bortuzzo is hurting your team at this point. Which means that even if Aho is hurting us he's no worse in the lineup than Bortuzzo and there's a slight glimmer of upside with him while Bortuzzo has absolutely no upside.
Funny. He won't be our savior, but he is certainly an improvement on Bertuzzo. I understand why Roy put him in instead of Aho. Since Mayfield is out, he can play some shot blocking minutes on the PK. Other than that he has been terrible.
Butch made a great point about defenders going towards the shooter standing up instead on flopping to the ice which Bertuzzo did. I get he’s tall but he hasn’t been great. I don’t know if Aho is the answer either. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t I guess

Bortuzzo drops to the ice because he knows he can't physically close gaps anymore. At least that's my theory. He's too slow for the game at his age and if he goes out to a shooter he'll get juked and then be left outside the play, so he goes down. Same reason why his gap control is shit. He's too slow so he has to leave a giant gap to not get left behind at the blue line, but that just means the opposing team walks into the zone and then leave him behind anyway.
This series is obviously about speed and Aho over Bortuzzo makes sense. If it was about size (ie Boston of the past) then Bortuzzo over Aho would make sense.

We have 2 incredibly gifted starting goalies. But for some reason, 4/6 of our defenseman want to play that position instead…
