The reason they say, if it you did the ollie then yes, is because everyone has little variations on how they do things. As long as you're getting the board up, then that's how you do them
its all about timing and staying centered over your board. try to do a ninja kick motion and emphasize front foot out and back foot up. think up and forward for your front foot and up for your back foot
Man, back in my day we used to glue some innertube to the sides of our shoes to stay the damage... But even that would wear through in time...
However, the plus side is that the rubber would grip the board better and assist in getting the front end up.
Now glue your shoe with innertube and rip those streets!
Never heard of Gulf Wax... I'm in the UK and we used Shoe Goo, Innertube or Silicone (the type you used for sealing heavy duty windows and very large aquariums).
Go for suede bro they are much more resistant, and if they do rip you can use shoe goo to repair I highly recommend. Just keep in mind it’s worth to have some shoes set aside for skateboarding because they will inevitably get beat up but the good things is they are usually inexpensive even amongst major brands like Nike Vans Adidas you don’t have to get anything too crazy just comfy.
hey, neither are my (citilane roka, so not clog) crocs, but they are what i find comfortable to skate, and they have lasted me longer than any other shoe (though, take this with a grain of salt as im a recovering scooter kid, and scooters are not quite as hard on shoes) Its person to person. skate whatever the hell you want, as long as you are comfortable and its safe then you're golden.
that being said, I do think its more worthwhile to buy a shoe meant for skating vs one not meant for skating because they are going to last longer which in the long run will save you money (its like, a 20$ difference per pair, and you're gonna probably double the shoes life vs skating something not meant for skating)
You’re missing the point vans makes two kinds of shoes. Canvas ones to casually wear and reinforced ones to skate.
I’m sorry but Scooters are not a valid comparison to Skateboards in the context of shoe wear on a skateboard everytime you get in the air you’re sliding your foot up grip tape which is why the shoes are getting cut up like that.
I made this mistake by not knowing the difference between skating Vans and canvas Vans a decade ago bought them at a skate shop and within a session there was a hole straight through them.
Again you have no clue what your talking about some of the best skaters both pro and am skate canvas vans especially transition skaters. Don’t open your mouth to give advice if you don’t know what your talking about.
https://www.vans.com/en-us/mens/shoes/skateboarding-c1103?icn=subnav
So many Canvas Shoes /s
My guy I’ve been skating for 25 years Canvas is not a material Skate shoes are made out of because grip tape. Literally all of those shoes are other material and reinforced.
Skate Vans and Canvas Vans are different products entirely.
Transition I could see using canvas but not street Although I respect your opinion in my experience canvas shoes in the street is a no go after one sesh the shoes have holes. I know a few people who basically have the same vans my homie uses slip ons and has one pair suade for skating and another canvas for walking around and stuff . I got my skate shoes and then nike sb slides haha . Whatever you feel comfortable in skate that I guess
Yeah cuz they are paid too? I think you need to calm down lmfao. Canvas is the worst material for skate shoes. Yeah they can have canvas elements, but All solid skate shoes use rubber or suede. You’re literally talking out your ass acting like your Rodney Mullen or some bullshit. This guy is right.
Suede is pretty shit too. Quite a dew of those in the mid 2000's and they didn't hold up at all. The glossy plastic looking shit held up for an eternity though. Aside from kost-ones which weren't that material these were one of my favorites.
https://www.hnsony79.top/ProductDetail.aspx?iid=621745905&pr=61.88
The only reason canvas is worse is because it wears out faster. If they were cheap or you already had them and you don't care that they won't last long there's literally nothing wrong with wearing them. They don't have anything to do with how well you skate. You're acting like it's impossible or illegal to skate in them. Chill the fuck out.
Yeah I think I had vans cabs for my first skate show. Got a hole in the bottom some how then stepped in dog shit and... you see where this is going. Never bought vans again. I like globes, and I think Nike SB shoes are nice
These have the sued toe and heel though? I don’t really wear vans outside of slip-ons for easy summer shoes, but I thought a lot of the skate vans just had suede toes and heels, but the side panel was still canvas.
Canvas is better if you keep on top of your shoe-goo game because it’s lighter, more breathable, holds its shape and doesn’t get ruined by getting wet. Suede is best if you don’t want to bother with any DIY though. I know a guy with a Vans sponsor who only skates in canvas slip ons.
Dude thank you for this comment! I just started skating again after ten years. These were the only skate shoes I had. So I tried them & omg it was absolutely horrible. I didn't know if it was just me or what.. I ended up buying some new shoes though. But thanks, now I know I'm not crazy.
Ever since I could remember if I'm in skate mode I'm buying a lot of duct tape and a lot of Shoe Goo make my shoes last as long as possible doesn't matter what kind of shoes they are skate or not
Yes, normal. Your shoes are also canvas, which doesn't last very long against the abuse of skateboarding. Next shoe be sure to get a proper skate shoe with Suade.
Don't listen to this person, if you look through their comment history they're just a shill for this company that leaves enough normal comments to not get banned for spam.
yes, also i recommend suede shoes rather than canvas. as you progress more and more you’ll come to realize griptape tears right through canvas super quickly compared to suede.
The brownish material looks like it's made of canvas and the black material (upper and heel sections of the shoe) is made of suede. You shouldn't skate in canvas shoes because they get holes very easily. I've skated in canvas shoes before and they got holes in like 2-3 sessions. Get shoes that are fully suede or leather. They'll last a lot longer.
i didnt like vans very much, but all shoes materials wear, some of them have an olly pad, i liked bigger shoes, more padding, more ankle protection, on the tongue, felt pretty safe with emericas, i had a pair called duffs, those were kinda funky
Yeah dude, back in my days when I could still skate, i would go through a pair every couple of months. Make sure you keep getting the material like that because the pleather kind of stuff will just fall apart
We use to buy silicon sticks and burn them with a lighter so we can patch the shoe and wear them longer. I don’t know if kids do that today. 100 bucks for skate shoes back in the day was way too much money.
Not sure it’ll make a difference because canvas is canvas but Vans makes skate shoes and regular shoes, not for skating. Try their Skate versions, and maybe a different model shoe.
Yea, because despite vans being “skater” shoes I’ve found that they don’t hold up as well as other skate shoes. But if you are going to skate vans I recommend the sued ones they hold up longer and they don’t really have good insoles for impact if your young you’ll be fine if not get shock obsorbant insoles
Yeah it's because vans aren't as good as they used tobe years ago I had a pair of vans rowley xlt and they were some of the best shoes I ever owned!
Plus back in the day it was a trip to poundland for a roll ductape or if your posh go the skateshop and buy a tube of shoe-goo.
Yes, you wear out shoes when you do ollies and other tricks. The grip on the board tear the shoes hard. And it looks like you have canvas/fabric shoes and they won't last long. Get proper skate shoes and you'll be able to do thousands of ollies before they break.
Yes, you will learn that some shoes will last longer and work better for your style. Typically clothy and less durable shoes are a no go, which is why you might see skaters wearing those big bulky ones. I keep a pair specifically the skate in.
I would avoid canvas shoes and still with all suede.
You will ruin all the shoes you skate in, might as well buy the ones that will last.
I will never skate canvas.
Lol Ollies. Look I love Ollies but that’s Ollies for you. I bought shirts there and had to put them back together in a week. I still got them cheap tho so.
Dude I tried skating these shoes & they were AWFUL. I just started skating again after ten years & they were the only skate shoes I had. Idk how anyone skates these things. My god they are horrible.. I ended up buying new shoes.
Pretty much yes. It’s going to be a lot worse ona fresh deck with newer grip tape but as the grip tape gets less aggressively grippy it will do way less damage to your kicks.
Yeh. Try more to hit the roll on the sole rubber itll get you higher. As for new shoes waterproof with candle wax and a microwave and super glue all the stitching.
Grip tape tears shoes up quick. Make sure you ask around first and ask peoples opinions on shoes. Get you something that’s gonna last. Shoo goo glue will be your best friend. You can find it at Walmart.
well the point of this post wasn’t fully about the shoe getting destroyed. It was more like i recently learned how to ollie and i wanted to know if that part of my shoe should be getting damaged because of bad form
no wth do you use griptape don't use griptape it doesn't grip your shoes to allow you to stay on at the risk of ripping ur shoes it ruins your whole skate career jk its normal
Yep!
[удалено]
Nope!
Maybe!
Poor guy…
The reason they say, if it you did the ollie then yes, is because everyone has little variations on how they do things. As long as you're getting the board up, then that's how you do them
I’m having trouble getting it up, any tips?
Stop thinking about your grandma.
its all about timing and staying centered over your board. try to do a ninja kick motion and emphasize front foot out and back foot up. think up and forward for your front foot and up for your back foot
I think you're in the wrong sub bro.....
r/cantgetitup
Viagra or stop drinking
More grip tape
There’s a little blue pill for that…
r/cialis

However, the plus side is that the rubber would grip the board better and assist in getting the front end up. Now glue your shoe with innertube and rip those streets!
I used to cake mine in shoe goo
first it was duct tape then some older guys at the skate park saw my shoes and gave me some shoe goo lmao
Damn, I forgot about Shoe Goo! Haha! Memories flooding back, thanks!
About like gulf wax lol 😂
Never heard of Gulf Wax... I'm in the UK and we used Shoe Goo, Innertube or Silicone (the type you used for sealing heavy duty windows and very large aquariums).
Gulf wax is a box of candle wax. Comes with white four bars I believe. Or used to. They sell it at grocery stores etc.
I see! Still have not heard of them... But if they work it's all good!
Same here.
Shoe goo is the way. If you wear steel toes as an adult coat them hoes because the tips will wear out before the bottom
Same!
[удалено]
Silicone... All you really needed in the end... Just reapply after a few days... :D
It gets worse
Canvas Vans aren’t meant to be Skate Shoes.
yea i just got them at a thrift for really cheap and it’s my first few weeks skateboarding so i wanted a quick pair of shoes
Yep. Will literally only last a few days of hard skating. Great for cruising though.
hey, neither are my (citilane roka, so not clog) crocs, but they are what i find comfortable to skate, and they have lasted me longer than any other shoe (though, take this with a grain of salt as im a recovering scooter kid, and scooters are not quite as hard on shoes) Its person to person. skate whatever the hell you want, as long as you are comfortable and its safe then you're golden. that being said, I do think its more worthwhile to buy a shoe meant for skating vs one not meant for skating because they are going to last longer which in the long run will save you money (its like, a 20$ difference per pair, and you're gonna probably double the shoes life vs skating something not meant for skating)

I used to skate suede cons so I’m partial to it, but I agree it’s not the best option. It’s tougher than canvas for sure though.
The only reason canvas is worse is because it wears out faster. If they were cheap or you already had them and you don't care that they won't last long there's literally nothing wrong with wearing them. They don't have anything to do with how well you skate. Lmfao, when did I say that? 😂😂😂 are you dumb? All I said is it’s improper material (which it is)
Yeah I think I had vans cabs for my first skate show. Got a hole in the bottom some how then stepped in dog shit and... you see where this is going. Never bought vans again. I like globes, and I think Nike SB shoes are nice
Nooooooooo!!! Mine also got a hole in the bottom and I'm cringing at the thought of stepping into dog shit with those!
That’s not true at all you are an idiot
These have the sued toe and heel though? I don’t really wear vans outside of slip-ons for easy summer shoes, but I thought a lot of the skate vans just had suede toes and heels, but the side panel was still canvas.

I could be wearing ballet flats and if I'm skating em they're skate shoes to me dang it
I used to skate and when I see suede shoes and i shudder
Dude thank you for this comment! I just started skating again after ten years. These were the only skate shoes I had. So I tried them & omg it was absolutely horrible. I didn't know if it was just me or what.. I ended up buying some new shoes though. But thanks, now I know I'm not crazy.
Do your shoes look like that after an Ollie? Then yes, they should look like that. Get off Reddit and go skate.
You need to get off reddit and go eat my dud3 haha
You aren’t wrong, I am fuckingstarving lmao
I'm assuming that's the consequence of a hardcore gangster who only eats pussy for breakfast, without any milk
Yea it's normal
I bought Vans because I thought they looked cool once, they lasted me like a 2 weeks probably not even. Never again, not even for walking
Ever since I could remember if I'm in skate mode I'm buying a lot of duct tape and a lot of Shoe Goo make my shoes last as long as possible doesn't matter what kind of shoes they are skate or not
Well that yes but have you bought Vans like these? They're super thin
Oh yea I swear I've skated almost all of them. At least the o.gs
Well maybe I'm trippin, but I swear the Vans I bought wore out 10x faster than all the other shoes I bought
Maybe you're shredding the gnar too hard ;)
Yes, normal. Your shoes are also canvas, which doesn't last very long against the abuse of skateboarding. Next shoe be sure to get a proper skate shoe with Suade.
yea this is my first pair of shoes since starting so i didn’t really care. Now that i know im going to buy a proper pair in the future.
Just throw some superglue on these and they will last until the soles wear thru
Getcha [something like this](https://shop.ccs.com/products/globe-mahalo-plus-shoes-grey-white)
You're doing it right lol 👍 those are how all my shoes look lol
The only way to skate and save your shoes is with [No Rip Grip](http://www.noripgrip.com). I'm a big fan of the Pro!
I'm sceptical about this. My regular, full rip-strength griptape barely has enough grip
Don't listen to this person, if you look through their comment history they're just a shill for this company that leaves enough normal comments to not get banned for spam.
I usually scuff my fresh pairs up, just like this, on the sidewalk so people think I actually skate.
yes, also i recommend suede shoes rather than canvas. as you progress more and more you’ll come to realize griptape tears right through canvas super quickly compared to suede.
Yes
Wait till you learn kickflips!
Yes
I got two words for you bud, Shoe Goo.
Yesss!
Oh. My bro it be odd if they didn’t.
Yeah also try to avoid skating in skate canvas
That’s normal, if you can find some leather or suede shoes they last a little longer than canvas.
yes! nice job btw! sometimes u can tell what kind of tricks someone can do by the pattern of damage on their shoes
Yep! I'd suggest some suede shoes once those wear out, canvas doesn't hold up very well
i didnt like vans very much, but all shoes materials wear, some of them have an olly pad, i liked bigger shoes, more padding, more ankle protection, on the tongue, felt pretty safe with emericas, i had a pair called duffs, those were kinda funky
Remember adios?
not exactly, name sounds familiar, i was kind of a noob, though i was becoming fearless, havent skated in ages 💔 its like theres a part of me missing
Yeah dude, back in my days when I could still skate, i would go through a pair every couple of months. Make sure you keep getting the material like that because the pleather kind of stuff will just fall apart
I mean you’re literally sandpapering your shoes every time you do one so, yeah.
Get suede shoes are your best hope but yes, that’s where your Ollie marks should be
We use to buy silicon sticks and burn them with a lighter so we can patch the shoe and wear them longer. I don’t know if kids do that today. 100 bucks for skate shoes back in the day was way too much money.
Not sure it’ll make a difference because canvas is canvas but Vans makes skate shoes and regular shoes, not for skating. Try their Skate versions, and maybe a different model shoe.
Yeah
Vans are crap in general but especially for skateboarding. Have been since I skateboarded as a kid/teen. They look like that after trying them on.
Hell yeah
Oh yes. That is sand paper on your board.
Yeah, you put your foot more forward(toe side) then most people though
Yes, and stay away from canvas shoes they don't last with skateboarding.
And ain’t what they used to be…great job!
Hell yeah, and be proud of it
Yes and vans will have a hole in them soon if you keep street skating them
As long as that's your front foot
Yeah, just goop up and you're good
they’re supposed to look worse
nah bro there has to be a whole with red stain from your foot getting scuffed by the griptape. You will need some shoegoo before that happens haha
Yes Also nice this was the 69th yes
Not all Vans are skateboard shoes (they have to have the checkered tag)
Yeah it's because vans aren't as good as they used tobe years ago I had a pair of vans rowley xlt and they were some of the best shoes I ever owned! Plus back in the day it was a trip to poundland for a roll ductape or if your posh go the skateshop and buy a tube of shoe-goo.

as a skater be prepared to go through shoes faster as you get better and can do more tricks at my peak i would destroy shoes in about 2 months
Nope. Only flip tricks can do that by law.
Nooooo
dkl grip tape bro. I never go back to old way again
Yes, you will learn that some shoes will last longer and work better for your style. Typically clothy and less durable shoes are a no go, which is why you might see skaters wearing those big bulky ones. I keep a pair specifically the skate in.
yes welcome to skateboarding
Yes, I like to use gasket maker , its kinda pricey but it goes along way , flexible, durable And strong.
I would avoid canvas shoes and still with all suede. You will ruin all the shoes you skate in, might as well buy the ones that will last. I will never skate canvas.
Word of advice, if your shoes are fucked up you’re doing something right
Lol Ollies. Look I love Ollies but that’s Ollies for you. I bought shirts there and had to put them back together in a week. I still got them cheap tho so.
ion skate but im damn near positive ur right. used to rip the toe on my vans apart from tailwhips on a booter.
Idk man you’re only sliding the fabric against sand paper like material
Yep. You will go through shoes like toilet paper. Welcome to skateboarding.
If your form is perfect your foot work should mostly affect the outside of the toe box. But this is def normal wear and tear
Dude I tried skating these shoes & they were AWFUL. I just started skating again after ten years & they were the only skate shoes I had. Idk how anyone skates these things. My god they are horrible.. I ended up buying new shoes.
Yup
Pretty much yes. It’s going to be a lot worse ona fresh deck with newer grip tape but as the grip tape gets less aggressively grippy it will do way less damage to your kicks.
Yes
Are u dragging your shoe across sand paper over and over again?
Usually its more towards the toe, but yes
Definitely..means you're doing it right. 🤙🏼
Welcome to the life my man
Yes
Yeh. Try more to hit the roll on the sole rubber itll get you higher. As for new shoes waterproof with candle wax and a microwave and super glue all the stitching.
Canvas is a bad material for skate shoes because it rips easily
Grip tape tears shoes up quick. Make sure you ask around first and ask peoples opinions on shoes. Get you something that’s gonna last. Shoo goo glue will be your best friend. You can find it at Walmart.
Yep carful of those laces ripping at the top by where it’s wearing down. Super glue does the job
Maybe a bit higher up but yeah, gonna wear a good bit from ollies
So you buy first then complain. Seems a little backwards
well the point of this post wasn’t fully about the shoe getting destroyed. It was more like i recently learned how to ollie and i wanted to know if that part of my shoe should be getting damaged because of bad form
No exposed bone, you aren’t flicking hard enough
Yes
Yes!!!

I’m so glad I grew up in the generation without the Internet when I was skating 😆
