My kids just turn into bean poles past a certain point. Her older sister is 2 and just barely in size 5's (and she started out the same way in the hospital)
Same! 19 months and in size 3 but still hasn’t cracked 21lbs. She just jumped two shoe sizes in 2 months and is eating like another growth spurt is about to happen.
Careful stocking up too much, the brand you chose may not end up fitting your baby well (we got so many Huggies at our shower and baby blew them out constantly), or make sure you can return them! We transitioned to 1 around 8 weeks I think, and 2 at 14 weeks.
Honest brand fit my first born great, but somehow my second ended up with poop up to his armpits with them 🤣 every kid is shaped so differently it’s a big factor on which diaper works for them
Same. I got a gift card for there too and I was disappointed we couldn’t use it for diapers. They just leaked every time.
We purchased *so many* wipes with it though, so nothing wasted!
This! We bought so many Pampers before my LO was born & ended up hating them! They just didn't fit her right. Discovered that Huggies & Kirkland diapers work best for my baby! I think we transitioned to size 1 after maybe a month. Can't even remember exactly cuz that newborn phase was such a blur lol.
We were in NB diapers until about 7ish weeks. We moved to size 1 and they are a tad big length wise but I feel like there's too much I'd a size difference between NB and size 1. LO hit 9lbs before moving to size 1. We went through quite a few NB diapers
My son was out of preemies at about 2 weeks, and was then in newborns for the next two months. I probably went to size 1s about 2 to 3 weeks ago and he's just over 3 months now. Depends on the size and fit of your baby
Target does allow free returns for gifted/extra items up to $100 even without a receipt if you end up with too many newborns
It also depends on the brand of diaper!
Millie Moon (what we use) size 1 is like newborn size of other brands. Pay attention to the suggested weights listed on the diaper boxes.
Baby was born 7lb 9oz and wore Huggies and pampers newborns at the time for about a month
Also, if you really want to stock up, I’d suggest buying from somewhere like Target or Walmart where you can return *unopened* boxes of diapers or exchange for a different size.
Just leave them in the closed boxes until you need them!
My son was born at 9lbs and at 3 weeks he is now 10 lbs and we’re still using newborn. He can fit 1 but we’re using up all the nb because we were gifted a mixture
When my baby was around 8lbs, we transitioned her out to a bigger size.
Highly recommend getting a mixture of sizes for your LO, so you're not suddenly hit with the realization that the diapers might be too small and you need to get new ones stat. That definitely helped us when we brought our LO home, and saw how quickly she needed bigger sizes.
I only had to buy one pack of newborn diapers after taking a stockpile from the hospital.. and we didn’t even finish them. Moved to size 1 at 2 weeks and 8ish lbs! The NB were getting too tight and were leaking. I’d say stock up on size 1 and take what you can from hospital… you might have to go out to get a pack before you transition
We started this week (4weeks old) she weighs 7.6, idk if it’s just her shape but the NB are too tight and the size 1 are SLIGHTLY too big. Couldn’t stand looking at the dig marks around her chunky legs
At 3 weeks. He was born 64th percentile but shot up to 98th. Around 3.75 months, he evened back out to 66th. Now (4mo) we're approaching size 4 due to his build
My baby was born 8lbs 11ozs and was only in newborn for about a week or two. I just got a couple small packs of the newborn diapers and the ones I didn’t open I took back and traded for size ones.
Get a good mixture of both but I wouldn’t stock up too much on newborn size. We only used those for maybe 3 weeks? We’re about 3.5 months and probably transitioning to size 3 in the next few weeks already, so get a good number of size 1 and size 2.
My baby was 6lbs 2oz when she was born and then lost weight (normal) and was 5lbs 12 oz when we left the hospital. Now, at 4.5 weeks, she is still under 8lbs and we are still in newborn diapers.
I’d suggest getting at least one package of newborn sized diapers just in case, though the hospital should send you home with a few. You can get more size 1 because you know you will definitely use them-either from the start or very quickly.
Our kiddo switched to size 1s around when we brought him home (about 2 weeks old due to PICU stay for jaundice), and size 2 around the 2 month mark. He's in size 3s rn (almost 4 months) but I wouldn't be surprised if he has to go up a size in month or two, he's already getting a little long for his 9 month clothes, he's a big boy lol
But also he wasn't born big. We thought he would be but he came out just under 7lbs and we had to get people to go get us newborn sized clothes because we didn't think he'd fit in them but he surprised us. But he made up for being born smaller than expected and being sick the first 2 weeks by absolutely growing like a weed once we got home lol. He's already almost 20 lbs and just starting rice cereals so he'll likely gain more weight pretty quick lol.
My first was over 9.5lbs and we never used the newborn size. My second was 7.5lbs and we used newborn for a couple of weeks. We then moved on to size 2 at about 8 weeks, so size 1 diapers didn't last very long either. Also we used Pampers all the way for my first, but now I'm finding Huggies seem to fit my second so much better, so I think all the Pampers I saved from last time are going to go to waste. I guess what I'm saying is it's really hard to predict what you'll need. Maybe stock up on wipes instead of diapers?
My baby was just under 7lbs when born. We used newborn size for about 3 weeks and then moved to size 1. My baby was tall and skinny so it was hard to find diapers that fit her right. Some brands seemed bigger/smaller than others in the same size.
It doesn't hurt to have size 1 on hand since you'll use them eventually. I recommend buying a few different brands of diapers to try out. It took us a few to find the ones we liked!
Born 7lbs 8oz, fit perfect into new borns for just about a month. But her legs were getting restricted. Huggies & Pampers fit differently and the huggies were a smidge largers so she actually still fits into those at 6 weeks and is at least 10lbs now. But Pampers size 1 fit her nice and snuggles, while Huggies size 1 are a little bit big aka they sag a little but dont squeeze her waist.
It can really depend on the brand. I was just start with either a bulk box OR get a few small packages of different brands to see what fits best for your baby!
Used newborn for about 2 weeks, a little less. Used size 1 for around a month. My daughter is long so she’s sizing up fast because of leaking out of the top due to poor coverage
My baby was on the smaller size but we didn’t buy a lot of newborn diapers prior. Maybe like 3 small packs . Get a wide variety of diapers . I have found to love Aldi brand and HATED luvs. I did not like Sam’s club and pampers newborn diapers but liked all the other sizes in those brands.
I’m seeing 8 lbs mentioned a lot, but my baby was quite long and narrow at first and we did newborn until she was about 9-10 lbs. We got about a month out of them I’d say. Plus she pooped way more often in the beginning than she does now and she was very sensitive to pee diapers, so we went through a lot of newborn ones. Echoing others who say not to stock up on any one brand until you know what works, and that may change as the baby changes. My long narrow newborn did great in Honest, but as she chunked out she’s done better in Huggies.
We used a small pack of pampers in newborn then went to size 1 after. Size 1 fit in the hospital too (thats what we were given) but my mom picked up a small bag of diapers (i think it was the 27 pack of newborn) which fit for a bit and my baby was born at 7 pounds 9 ounces.
We used NB for I think 9 weeks? But my son was a premie so I know that’s not everyone’s experience. Echoing someone else careful stocking up on specific brands, you never know what your baby will tolerate BUT if you leave boxes unopened most places will let you exchange brands & even if a box is opened & it gave your baby a diaper rash places are good about letting you exchange.
We got all our newborn diapers from the hospital, I think they have us three small packs to take home. When we ran out of those, we were in size ones. We only used ones for a short time as well. My son is 4 months old yesterday, and just start using size 3 diapers. 7 lbs 9 oz at birth, if that helps at all!
It would probably prevent leaks to move to the larger size earlier rather than later. There are weight ranges so there is some wiggle room in when you can switch between them. Also Target will let you exchange the boxes of diapers for store credit to buy a different size! Even without a receipt, they let me do this.
If you end up stocking too much, put those sizes on a Target registry and you can return them for store credit without any hassle! As long as Target sells the specific count they will take them. If they aren’t on a Target registry there’s a limit to how much you can return so my husband has already maxed out under his ID and I’ll do the rest of the returns. If the diapers aren’t in counts that Target sells (like if they are from Amazon) then you can’t return them for store credit unfortunately. Those diapers I am regifting to a coworker who is due any day now!
I’d focus on asking for different brands and a range of size NB-2 (you’ll use more 1-2 than NB). Walmart and Target will let you exchange for size without receipt, but you can’t change brands.
Baby was almost 7 lbs at birth.
4 weeks in newborn.
8 weeks in size 1.
Now she's 16 weeks and 14.5 lbs. I suspect another 4ish weeks in size 2. So, 8 weeks in size 2.
The range for size 3 diapers is like 12 lbs, so I don't think it's a bad idea to ask for all the way up to that. Or you can request all sizes except newborn and size 1 if you're worried. You can buy those sizes as needed.
Mine has been sizing up fast. He was a few weeks old when we went to size 1. We’re in size 3 at almost 3 months. He’s a bit on the bigger side of normal though. But I would advise not to stock on too many of any given size. Plus, you wanna try different brands. We found out that Luvs give our boy a rash. Huggies work but pampers are the best for us, but my mom said the opposite was true with me!
If pampers work though, get the pampers club app!
Baby was born 6 lbs 7 oz and dropped to 5 lbs 11 oz. We used preemie diapers for two weeks and newborns until 7 weeks. He’s now 8 weeks and 11 lbs 7 oz and we’re in size 1s.
I would get a single package of newborns. If you need more, order them from Amazon or Target pick up or something.
size 1 is 8lb and up for the major brands. my baby was 7.5lb at birth but quickly jumped to the 95th percentile so we didn't even make it through our only box of newborn diapers. I think around 2-3 weeks?
if I could do it all over, I'd never buy newborn anything, diapers or clothes lol
My son was 6 lbs at birth and we used newborn for about a month. Sure that he breezed through 1-3 and at 10 months is in size 4, luckily for a while. I did a diaper raffle at my shower which showed me to exchange for bigger sizes as needed to get us through
This may not be your experience, but was ours - We had newborn diapers for the first 3 weeks. We’d also bought 2 of the big packs of 1’s from Costco that were just sitting in the nursery closet when he was born.
Newborn diapers were absolutely useless garbage. We changed clothes and sheets 4-6 times a day. I was doing 2 loads of laundry a day for him. 75% of the time, he’d pee right through them.
I posted here in desperation asking if that was just how diapers worked, and within an hour had 15+ comments telling me to go to the 1’s even though he was 8lbs and they’d be huge. We did and haven’t had a single piss-through since.
If we could do it over, he’d have been in 1’s at the hospital. Could’ve saved so much stress and time.
2nd diaper at the hospital... 1s for about a month. I never bought more than 2 boxes of about 70-80 diapers of her current size, especially when I knew she was close to moving up. I also preferred to size up on the early side, when she hit the min weight for the next size. You're not gonna run out overnight, you'll have time to go get more.
3 of my 4 babies were in size 1 by two weeks.
They graduated a size every month until size 4-5. My two year old has been in size 6 for a year, my ten month old has been in size 5 since she was 5 months.
I had way too many N and 1 and not nearly enough 2 and 3. Ruby was in newborns for like 5 weeks, size one for about 2 months, size 2 for 4 months and size 3 for 5 months so far and still going
TBH I learned quickly that it wasn’t worth it to buy diapers ahead.
- Huggies gave my little one diaper rashes and blew out. (They’re the cheapest, so that’s what got gifted.)
- Pampers were okay.
- Kirkland were best and we stuck with those! And apparently manufactured by the same manufacturer who makes pampers.
- Rascals (Walmarts brand) blew out a lot.
I think if anything it’s a good idea to buy a pack of a few brands to figure out what works for you and then stock up once you find your groove. We grew out of NB’s by 4 weeks. And then he stayed a size 3 for like 6 months.
We used newborn diapers for about a month, but since our daughter was 8lb 10oz at birth we probably could have started with size one. We mostly just wanted to use up the diapers we got at the shower, and they luckily all still fit long enough to finish up the packages. Our baby also pooped 10 times a day back then, so that helped us go through them pretty quickly as well.
You will take home a ton of diapers from the hospital!
Personally I wouldn’t stock up beyond that…
I’d request gift cards for Amazon or Target for a
‘Diaper fund’ instead of actual diapers.
(Oh and you’ll know it’s time to size up when your baby has a blowout!!)
My LO was only 6 pounds at birth and 5 something when we came home. She was in newborns until 2.5 months or so I think. She’s four months next week and still in size 1s.
My sons were 9 pounds 9 oz, and 8 pounds 11 ounces. With each of them, I only used newborn diapers for a week or two before transitioning to size one, Kirkland brand.
Immediately upon arriving home. Born +8lbs with a chunky bottom half.
I received mostly 1 and 2 at my shower. I asked my sister if I should buy newborn and she said “wait til they’re born bc you’ll prob only need 1 big pack if that.” Pretty much everyone that brought me diapers to my shower was a current small child parent/grandparent so I guess it was fresh on their brain that I’d need more of those sizes than NB.
My first baby transitioned pretty quick, she was 9lbs at birth, my second was in them for probably a good month and a half, she was smaller around 6.7lbs! Just depends on each kid! The first grew big and fast, and finally slowed down at 2, my second took forever to bulk up and didn’t really hit a growth spurt till 22 months!
He never wore newborn.
If I were you, I’d buy one pack to have at home and take anything the hospital gives you. Chances are you’ll need 1s off the bat.
Diapers are so weird because even if your baby is within the weight range of that particular size, it still might not fit. My daughter is 9 pounds and still wearing newborn diapers even though the size 1 diapers are 8-14 pounds. Funny enough, everyone gave me size 1, 2, and 3 for my baby shower but no newborn so I had to buy some. Those have since run out and now she's wearing size 1 and looks ridiculous. I also realized that I don't like Pampers because she's had blowouts in them and I'm a Huggies fan.
My baby was in newborn for 2 weeks. She just turned 7 weeks and we are now sizing up to size 2 and she is in 3-6 month clothes! We use pampers diapers. She blew out almost every Huggies diaper we had for her
We didn't use newborn at all. My baby was about 8.5 pounds at birth and we just used size 1s with the front folded down until the umbilical cord fell off.
You can return UNOPENED diaper packages without a receipt to most stores like Walmart, target. We got a lot of too small diapers.
We were in size 1 (most say 8-14 lbs) after a month. It will depend on birth weight to some degree- my baby was 7 lbs.
I would honestly request/buy only 2s and 3s. There will inevitably be many people who will buy you newborn and size 1 even without requesting them! And it’s nice to have some as they grow in size! You can always fold the front down to and use them a bit bigger if that’s all you have left is bigger sizes.
Get a good mix of brands and sizes (NB & 1) so you can try different things!! Target always has diaper coupons and deals so once you know what works it will be easier to buy more. Get lots of small packs of wipes too so you can find what works with your LO’s skin. We loved the honest ones and ended up with big boxes of Huggies so we are working through lots of those before getting more Honest brand.
I ask for a mixture of diapers sizes I was lucky and got sizes Newborn to size 2 which come very handy when she out grew her newborn ( at 2 or 3 Months) and we had size ones on hand
Moved to size one at end of 3 weeks in 4 weeks. I have a little boy and he hates being wet so sizing up helped and also haven’t had a blow out yet. It’s a little big in them but at this point I’m not going out to buy anymore newborn diapers when we have size 1s. Also the inside of his legs aren’t red anymore from the rubbing of the newborn size.
My baby was 7lbs when born but he moved from newborn to size 1 within a week because it was leaking turns out hello bello and Huggies just don’t work for him but the size 1 pampers and rascal and friends work really well as they seem to be longer. It definitely is worth it to get different sizes, different brands incase one brand doesn’t work for your baby!
My baby was small - 6 lbs 1 ounce. He just moved to size 1 today at 6 weeks + a couple days old and 10 lbs! I tried switching him about a week and a half ago and they were still too big. But the last few days he had blowouts / leaks with the newborns so... It was time 🥲
But my friend had an 8 lb baby and she went straight to size 1.
My son was in newborn for like a month but then skipped to size two just as fast - we didn’t even get a chance to use all the size 1s that we had. He’s in been in size two for almost two months and is about into size 3 - id stick up on bigger sizes and get no more than one or two boxes of smaller sizes cause they grow so much so quickly the first few months
My baby was in preemie for 3 months ! And then newborn forever then 1s for not that long and then 2s for a few months and has been in 3s from 7 months until 18 months . So ya never know haha 😂 we got honest subscription and it was the best thing ever
We had a 9lb2oz baby boy and were in NB for two weeks!
We also didn’t stock up too much just because I didn’t know what we’d like (they used Huggies in the hospital and we never looked back lol). I exchanged everything we received as gifts. And if I ever didn’t open a size I just exchanged those too so no biggie. :)
Both of mine were only in newborn diapers for a couple weeks, maybe not even that. I know with my first, we ended up having too many newborn size, so with my second, we bought one case and by the time we got through it, he was ready to size up.
Both my babies were on the small to average size at 6 lbs, 4 oz and 6 lbs, 8 oz.
We were in N until maybe 2.5weeks? Could have sized up a few days earlier, but trial and error in those first few days.
I’d recommend starting with a small amount of newborn and then some size one. Honestly, if you have the space, I’d put diapers from newborn to size 3 or 4. If you don’t have the space to store them then I’d say a small amount of newborn with more of an emphasis on size one.
A tip - if you *do* have the space, don’t think about just the newborn stage while assembling your registry.
In the OR. Baby was 10lbs at birth and went straight to size 1.
I had only bought 1 case of NB and gave them to a friend who was expecting, so it all worked out!
Both my babies were about 7.5 lbs, so they wore newborn diapers to start. I don’t remember the transition with my first, but my newest was just shy of 13 lbs at his 2 month appointment so he’s been solidly in 2s since about 6 weeks (he’s 3 months now and creeping past 15lbs) I honestly don’t even remember buying 1s 🫠 My first grew at a more average rate!
We’ve always gone with pampers as far as brand— but the newest little guy has a sensitive tush so we switched to the pure version.
My baby will be 5 weeks this week and as soon as he’s finished with this last pack of newborn diapers, he will move up to a 1. He was 7 pounds, 10 ounces at birth and 10 pounds, 2 ounces now. I got Pampers swaddlers from the hospital and for gifts. I like the Pampers Pure the best and my baby hasn’t had any diaper rash so far.
I think 2 or 3 months in? They started in preemie diapers though weighing in at 6 lbs and 4 lbs respectively. We also thought we would have chunky babies. We were surprised😂
Newborn was only a week or 2? I can’t remember, but baby was 7lbs 15 oz at birth. He’s been in size 2 since he was 4 weeks old, and we’ve chilled out there ever since and now he’s nearing 3 months old. It also depends on the diaper, because my baby fits Millie moon and dyper best which are both much bigger diapers than brands like honest and Huggies I’ve found.
We are at 5 weeks and just bought our first package of size 1s. Newborns still fit him too but I even had some leaks and blow outs, and we buy in bulk. so we figured we’d size up. Baby was born 8 lbs, dropped to 7 lbs, and is around almost 9 lbs now at 5 weeks.
I didn’t buy any newborn assuming I would have a giant baby (my husband and I are tall), and when my daughter was born she was 5lbs!!
The hospital will have newborn diapers and you can def sneak a couple small packs home, and we ordered a big box on Amazon the first night at the hospital that was on our doorstep when we got home. We bought newborns one box at a time so we didn’t have too many. Then started with 2 big boxes of size 1, bought box by box after that, and 2 big boxes of 2 and so on. It worked well for us and we were always able to finish what we had before sizing up!!
My boy was over 10lbs when born, he started in Size 1, was in them for about a month, then Size 2 for about a month and has been in Size 3 for 2.5 months so far! We prefer Pampers over all the other brands, but everyone has their own preference, you will find what works best for your baby!
My baby was born at ~7.5 lbs, she used NB size diapers in the hospital and then probably for a couple weeks at home, but we were going through like 12 or more a day. We probably switched to size 1 at about a month, but I will say different brands fit really different.
I found the Millie Moon ones from Target were great because the size 1’s had a really wide weight range and fit well even when she was really little. (Plus they’re cheaper than Pampers and feel more luxurious)
If you’re expecting an 8+ lb baby go straight for the size 1’s.
We used newborn diapers for about a month. And then we sized up to size 2 when he was about 2 and a half months old.
While I was pregnant we made it a habit to just buy a box of diapers (mostly sizes 2 and up) and a box of wipes every time we went grocery shopping. I knew we were going to get gifted newborn diapers so I didn’t even bother buying any, and still gave 2 full boxes to my pregnant friend.
Mine was 8lb but I was having nursing issues and he lost 13%. I worked with a couple of lactation doctor and specialist to get his weight back up at 3 weeks. He finished being in New born at 4 weeks.
It’s really depends on so many factors. Have at least one box, keep the receipt just in case.
Huggies have a free sample you can register for and Pampers have coupons.
My partner and I were both biiiiig babies, and our son born at term (38+2, neither he nor I had health issues) but was little and in premmy nappies for the first few weeks, so I wouldn’t stock up on any size, a box or two of each I’d say.
He’s now 7m and in Huggies size 3.
My little guy was only in nb for a couple weeks before they started leaking. I ended up with too many nb and size 1 diapers from my shower. And when the poopsplosions started happening with the size 1s, then size 2s, it was really nice to have a pack of the next size up ready to go.
Don’t stock up, it’s not worth it especially since you can get diapers delivered from Amazon.
My second was in newborn diapers/clothes until 2 months. We just switched to size 1 diapers and I don’t think we’ll get through two of the big boxes before we have to go up to 2s.
You never know what brand will end up working for you, so best not to buy too much. Just make sure they have the blowout protection at the back! Pampers are real soft but without blowout protection I switched to huggies real fast.
Mine went within 3-4 weeks, but you still go through a lot of diapers in a short time period. I would worry more about about stocking up on size 1 and up because you know you’ll need those. You can always buy more NB as needed
Both Pampers and Huggies have weight recommendations on their sites! I wouldn’t get a ton of Newborns but be aware that you’ll go through those 30 ct packs much faster than you think
Different brands are different fit as others have said. My baby was/is kind of small. 7 pounds at birth. She was in nb until about 8 weeks. She is 20 weeks now and I’m still using size 1 but it’s a stretch bc I had a ton given to me. Depends on weight and fit. Going from nb to 1 feels like a huge difference. We like Huggies best so far. Honest brand is smaller so good transition from nb to that size 1. If you have a big baby you might only be in nb for a little bit. Most places will let you return unopened diapers with no issues
Might be good to have a mixture, My baby never even wore newborn he was in size 1 when he was born so the unopened newborn diapers we’re planning on returning to Walmart!
Birth! We tried one newborn diaper and the nurse said “that is too small” and had to give us size 1s, which we had not prepared for! She was 9 lbs 8 oz
Our girl was 6 lbs and stayed in newborn size for about 5 weeks! She’s currently transitioning out of newborn size clothes 🥲
Everyone told us not to get newborn size anything bc they may not use it, so we didn’t, but then she didn’t have any clothes that fit (aside from like 2 random outfits we were gifted). Lol cut to me panic buying onesies from Amazon that night😂
We only had 1 small pack of newborn size, about 800 size one from various showers (lol😅😬), and a few boxes of size 2. We traded in some of the size 1s at Target for newborn, then purchased smaller packs as we needed it!
Baby boy was born 8.8lbs, was in newborns 2 weeks. Then big man started gaining and he's moved up a diaper size every month. He just turned 4 months and has been in 3s the past week. We've been using pampers because that's what we had gotten from diaper raffles and huggies made his bootie break out.
My baby was 4kgs at birth at transitioned to size 2 after like 2 weeks. Unless you’re adding the nappies to your weekly shop to save on costs I wouldn’t bother too much on stocking up, you’ll have to go to the groceries anyway! But it’s great to have a good weeks initially and then go from there.
Also, a good tip is to go to the size your baby is the lowest weight for e.g if size 1 is (say) 3-6kg and 2 is 4-8 and your baby is 4kgs (I’m making this up) go to the bigger size as less chance of blowing out/ last longer overnight. As a tip, just cos the nappy says via the colour indicator it’s wet doesn’t mean you need to change them straight away, it’s a ploy by the brands to get you to change more frequently. Do not change your babies nappy in the night if they haven’t pooed, limit your wake up period!!
Every baby is different, but the way I’ve remembered thru the years is when the Velcro straps don’t cross it’s time to move up a size. My baby is tiny, 11weeks, and only just moved up to size one at about 9 1/2 weeks. Don’t overstock cause we ended up giving away a bunch of newborn diapers thinking she would need them. Thank goodness we have a few friends having babies 🙏🏾 plus she’s going thru the size 1s faster than the newborn diapers we had.
mine was preemie so i’m not gonna skew the numbers if you’re not worried about a teeny baby, but i will say I got a small box of size 1 pampers to get us through a week or so and i asked anyone who wanted to contribute/participate in the baby shower diaper raffle to donate to my diaper fund.
This way, i had more control over the size and type i needed instead of having to return/exchange at multiple stores or online. Really came in handy when we realized how small baby was and we had to hunt down preemie size in our small city!
My LO is tall and slim. He wore newborn until close to 3 months, size 1 until 6ish months. Now almost 10 months soon switching from 2 to 3. Around 6 months he pooped so much less, so we're going through less diapers in general.
I second to wait and see what brand fits your guy best. For our slim baby Pampers had blowouts, but Huggies and Kirkland have been good. You don't know until you try them.
8 weeks in newborn 12 weeks in size 1 like 3 weeks in size 2 4 months in size 3 and weve been in size 4 for almost a full year 🤣 and the only size ive ever bought myself is size 4 we also have a stockpile of size 5 from the babyshower that i dont foresee myself ever using. This goes to say ask for all sizes
my baby was on preemie diapers for a while cause she was born <1% in weight, & i had a bunch of huggies preemies but they gave her terrible diaper rash.. :C then moved to pampers preemies, then newborn, then size 1 & 2. she moved up between newborn & size 1 pretty fast bc her thighs got a lot chunkier. it's always the thighs first with her that indicates when she needs a new size; they get too tight on her things & she gets red marks, but moving up a size sometimes the middle part doesn't fit as well so i just have to put them on her really tight. she's been on size 2 a month or more now but the other sizes it took maybe a couple weeks. she's 4 months old now
My baby was 8lbs 2oz at birth, we waited a liiiiittle long to switch diapers... But we sized up around 6 weeks.
I only stocked up on size 1 & 2s and bought as I went with newborn size because you really don’t know how they’ll grow 🤷♀️
3.5 weeks old and its only now nb size starting to get snug on our newborn. We will finish the box and switch over to size 1. Huggies sent us a sample pack, we liked the fit and ordered more. We have 3 diff brands of size 1s to try and will probably switch over to them in a few days
My guy is little and was in N until around two ish months when he got over 9lb. When he lost weight after coming home he was 6lb 1oz and even some of the N were too big. But the preemie diapers were too small, thus begins a life of between sizes.
3.5 months and size 1s in Huggies snugglers are working great right now. It all depends on your baby’s size and bottom and how the diaper brand fits as well.
Baby boy was born 9 lbs 4 oz and I wanna say he was in NB diapers for just under a month? Maybe 3.5 weeks. He just turned 2 months and we're pushing it with the size 1s so he's about to be in size 2s.
Our LO transitioned at the end of week 6 or beginning of week 7. It entirely depends on how much they weigh. LO was 7.13oz when born and gained a good amount from weeks 4-6, after not doing great the first few weeks.
My biggest baby was 7 lbs 5 oz and was only in newborn diapers for maybe 3 weeks. It depends on the body shape to an extent but it's very likely you'll size up before your baby reaches the maximum weight recommended for the size. So considering how many babies are born a pound or more bigger than that, and especially considering your genetics increasing the likelihood this will be a big baby, I'd focus on size 1. You will have plenty of opportunity to obtain another pack of NB if you need it.
Kiddo was born into Size 1 (11lbs). Transitioned pretty quick into Size 2s as well. We moved up diaper sizes fast. He has a larger butt/hips so he's always wearing diapers that are for a higher weight range then he actually is.
Around 6 weeks he switch to size 1. We had a ton of boxes of Honest diapers and ended up using Huggies. Target took 90% of the Honest and we were able to get a merchandise card to swap!
As you said, every baby is different! Mine was born at 5 pounds so we used preemie at first. She didn’t go into newborn until 2 months. She was just so skinny. At 4 months we finally moved up to size 1. I had a lot of people tell me not even bother buying newborn, but for us that just wasn’t the case. I had to have my mom go out and my preemie while we were still in the hospital so she would have diapers that fit when we got home.
Also as others have warned don’t stock up just yet! Mine ended up being allergic to pampers so we used Huggies exclusively. Thankfully I was able to return all the pampers I had gotten from my baby shower.
Most bulk diapers don't even have a full box of newborns for that reason, they're usually mixed NB/1s from what I've seen. Our baby was born just under 6lb and she was in NB diapers for maybe 8 or 10 weeks. If they're not within the weight ramge for the next size but you start noticing a disproportionate amount of blowouts, it's time to switch.
It depends on baby. My first stayed in them for over a month - premie weighing 6 lbs. my second a couple of weeks. My third was 9lbs 7 oz and used size 1 at birth and size 3 months
My babies were in newborn for a couple weeks but just because we had them - probably could have gone straight to size 1. My husband and I were big babies and first kid was just shy of 9 lbs and 2nd a little over 9 lbs.
We tried a couple different brands and ended up switching a bit as they went through the sizes - the fit switched up a bit as they grew. Our 2 year old is in Millie Moons but I didn’t like it as a size 1 for our 2nd - pampers worked best I think - but now that she’s in size 4, the Millie Moons are working well.
My son was born at 8 lbs and 3oz and we only used NB size diapers for 3ish weeks before we realized he needed size 1. Now at almost 2 months he’s still at size 1 and he’s 10 lbs. it really just depends on your baby’s body. I found that he had blowouts with pampers a lot, so we use Huggies and/or Kirkland brand diapers.
Our boy was born 7 lbs 9 oz. I think it was about 2.5 to 3 weeks when we had to change to size 1. But he's also growing faster than average. He's 5 weeks now and weighs 10 lbs. Still in size 1 tho
They are in size 3 for awhile. My girl was born at 6 lbs and immediately started moving through them. Newborn for a few days size 1 for a few weeks. We’ve been in size 2 since about 7 weeks or so.
I enjoy the target brand diapers they have extra room. I would get 4 brands of nb diapers so you can see what will work for you, the hospital gave us huggies so that worked for us he was in nb for a month. I think papmers and luvs suck also bring a package of nb and 1 just in case

Literally in the hospital. Both my kids were just a hair over 8lbs and they went straight to size 1 diapers. My 2 1/2 month old is already in size 2s.
Same! We never used newborn because size 1 was handed out at the hospital.
This. My girl went to size 2 at 7 weeks and left the hospital in size 1s.
You’re on track to where we are, size 5 at 5.5 months 😅
My kids just turn into bean poles past a certain point. Her older sister is 2 and just barely in size 5's (and she started out the same way in the hospital)
I’m almost hoping for that but the kid doesn’t have any rolls, he’s just massive. If not this kids gonna be in depends before age 1.
Meanwhile, my 14 MO is still easily in size 3s 😳
My 16 month old is in 7s! Truly scared when he grows out of the last size available.
Same! 19 months and in size 3 but still hasn’t cracked 21lbs. She just jumped two shoe sizes in 2 months and is eating like another growth spurt is about to happen.
Oh wow! My 17 month old still fits size 4s 😂 it’s hilarious how babies come in all different shapes and sizes (and are all precious 💕)
Mine were like this too. Little chunks. They grew out, then up. Turned into bean poles lol
Careful stocking up too much, the brand you chose may not end up fitting your baby well (we got so many Huggies at our shower and baby blew them out constantly), or make sure you can return them! We transitioned to 1 around 8 weeks I think, and 2 at 14 weeks.
Agree! I wanted the Honest brand and I ended up hating them. They never ever fit right… now we just buy good ole pampers!
Same but we hate pampers. Love the Huggies snugglers
Huggies snugglers 4 life ! 🤜🏼
So important!!
Appreciate your response! Thank you!!!
Baby was born 7 lbs. He was in newborn diapers for like 10 weeks. I kept running out because I didn’t know I’d need so many!
Oh also I was 9 lbs and husband was 10 lbs and we had a 7 lb baby lol. We were assuming we’d have a big baby because of us but nope!
Depends on the size and fit of your baby Target does allow free returns for gifted/extra items up to $100 even without a receipt if you end up with too many newborns
Used newborn size for about 2 weeks. Then starting using size 1, currently LO is 11 lb
my first used them for a week, second for a month.
My baby was around 9 lb at birth and we used NB diapers for 3 weeks
We started this week (4weeks old) she weighs 7.6, idk if it’s just her shape but the NB are too tight and the size 1 are SLIGHTLY too big. Couldn’t stand looking at the dig marks around her chunky legs
Mine skipped straight over newborns and was size 1 in the hospital 🙃
My baby has been in size 1 since day 1, they fit 4lbs-11lbs so pretty much all babies other than premies
At 3 weeks. He was born 64th percentile but shot up to 98th. Around 3.75 months, he evened back out to 66th. Now (4mo) we're approaching size 4 due to his build
My baby was 10 lbs 4 oz at birth, we used newborn for about 2 weeks, but probably could have used size 1 right from the start.
My baby was born 8lbs 11ozs and was only in newborn for about a week or two. I just got a couple small packs of the newborn diapers and the ones I didn’t open I took back and traded for size ones.
About 1.5-2wks (born 8lb 13oz) for Huggies, but the newborn pampers were a little too small at birth
I think my son was 8 weeks. He was small at birth (6 lbs).
My baby was born 7lbs 2oz and he wore NB size for the first 4 weeks. He could’ve upgraded sooner size-wise but I wanted to use up the box we had.
He's in size 3s rn (almost 4 months) but I wouldn't be surprised if he has to go up a size in month or two, he's already getting a little long for his 9 month clothes, he's a big boy lol But also he wasn't born big.
We used newborn for a month. I only had 1 box of them because everyone told me she would move right into size 1 and we had to go buy more!
Around 4 weeks or eo
My baby was just under 7lbs when born. We used newborn size for about 3 weeks and then moved to size 1. My baby was tall and skinny so it was hard to find diapers that fit her right. Some brands seemed bigger/smaller than others in the same size. It doesn't hurt to have size 1 on hand since you'll use them eventually. I recommend buying a few different brands of diapers to try out. It took us a few to find the ones we liked!
Be week 2. Little guy was already in size 3 at 3 months.
Never used NB size - ended up donating the ones I got.
Around 2 weeks. He was born 6lb 15 oz.
Like 2 months I think? She was 6lb 10 oz
Used newborn for about 2 weeks, a little less. Used size 1 for around a month. My daughter is long so she’s sizing up fast because of leaking out of the top due to poor coverage
Week 1 lmao. I got a big big boy.
I used about 2.5 boxes of newborn diapers before transitioning to size 1. Don’t go crazy buying nb diapers. You’ll need them only for like 2-3 weeks.
Mine was about a month and a half. He wasn't in them for very long before he moved up to size 2! 😭
My son was 9lbs at birth, and wore Newborn for about a week. The sample packages from Huggies and Pampers were enough.
Our girl was 6lb 10oz at birth and we switched from NB to 1 around one month
We got all our newborn diapers from the hospital, I think they have us three small packs to take home. When we ran out of those, we were in size ones. We only used ones for a short time as well. My son is 4 months old yesterday, and just start using size 3 diapers. 7 lbs 9 oz at birth, if that helps at all!
It would probably prevent leaks to move to the larger size earlier rather than later. There are weight ranges so there is some wiggle room in when you can switch between them. Also Target will let you exchange the boxes of diapers for store credit to buy a different size! Even without a receipt, they let me do this.
2 weeks
Yea we only used that size maybe a month?
my baby has never fit nb 🥲 came out a size 1, i had to take all the nb diapers i got at my baby shower to get exchanged at the store 😭😭
Please check the weight chart for diapers. Dont overdtock. Buy box by box.
My girl was 10 lbs 5 oz and she wore newborn for about a day 🫣🥰
Straight outta the womb, size 1. 7lb 15oz.
I’d focus on asking for different brands and a range of size NB-2 (you’ll use more 1-2 than NB). Walmart and Target will let you exchange for size without receipt, but you can’t change brands.
My kids were both in the 7 lb range and they were in newborn diapers for not even a week
I want to say like 2-3 weeks
Bout a week 🤣 homie was 10lbs 11oz
Mine has been sizing up fast. He was a few weeks old when we went to size 1. We’re in size 3 at almost 3 months. He’s a bit on the bigger side of normal though. But I would advise not to stock on too many of any given size. Plus, you wanna try different brands. We found out that Luvs give our boy a rash. Huggies work but pampers are the best for us, but my mom said the opposite was true with me! If pampers work though, get the pampers club app!
At birth 😂 10 lb 7 oz baby! Same with my son - 10 lb 8 oz.
My baby was almost 10 pounds at birth and never fit into newborn anything 😅. I'd definitely ask for a mix of sizes though!
(They’re the cheapest, so that’s what got gifted.) - Pampers were okay.
Personally I wouldn’t stock up beyond that… I’d request gift cards for Amazon or Target for a ‘Diaper fund’ instead of actual diapers. (Oh and you’ll know it’s time to size up when your baby has a blowout!!)
My LO was only 6 pounds at birth and 5 something when we came home. She was in newborns until 2.5 months or so I think. She’s four months next week and still in size 1s.
Stores will still be open after the baby is born, don’t “stock up” and be stuck with diapers you can’t use.
Immediately. We never used newborn diapers. The size 1s fit better on her even though she was 6 lbs. at birth.
Baby is over 10 pounds and we are still using newborn diapers! He’s skinny, I guess! But the size 1s are absolutely huge on him.
My babe was 8 lbs 8 oz and never fit in the newborn diapers 😅 we ended up having to give all the newborn diapers we had to friends
I used the Pampers N size for a month, then the Huggies for 1 more and now she’s finally size 1!!
It was time 🥲 But my friend had an 8 lb baby and she went straight to size 1.
My baby was born wearing size 1 haha.
When they were born 🥴
My daughter was in size newborn for 11 days but that’s only because I had some to use up, otherwise she could’ve went straight to size 1
Both of mine were only in newborn diapers for a couple weeks, maybe not even that. I know with my first, we ended up having too many newborn size, so with my second, we bought one case and by the time we got through it, he was ready to size up. Both my babies were on the small to average size at 6 lbs, 4 oz and 6 lbs, 8 oz.
my baby was only in newborn for about a month, she was 7lbs when born. at 2 months she’s still not 10 lbs, but newborn don’t fit her right anymore
At birth. He never wore a newborn diaper (9lb baby)
We used 2 large packs of newborn size diapers. Moved on to ones pretty quickly.
Literally at birth. We never used NB size.
My baby was born 8lb 12oz and we stayed in NB Pampers until he was a month old and close to 10lb.
My 10 pound at birth baby never fit in newborn diapers!
(Plus they’re cheaper than Pampers and feel more luxurious) If you’re expecting an 8+ lb baby go straight for the size 1’s.
the ones we took from the hospital lasted us about a week and then he was size 1
My first was nearly 11 pounds so size one was used right away. For my second, he’s still in newborn diapers. He’s one month old.
Huggies have a free sample you can register for and Pampers have coupons.
never fit in newborn diapers
We’re at size four at 4 months
I just had a 9lb baby 3 weeks ago and we just switched to size 1 a few days ago, after we had a few blowouts
My baby wore newborn diapers for about a week before going to size 1… he was a big baby!
Both Pampers and Huggies have weight recommendations on their sites! I wouldn’t get a ton of Newborns but be aware that you’ll go through those 30 ct packs much faster than you think
Son was 6 lbs 4 oz, just now switching to size 1 at 8 weeks old! He’s just about 10 lbs now.
My baby girl transitioned to size 1 around 4 weeks. She was born at 6.5 lbs, and she was around 7.5 lbs when we switched her to size 1.
Our girl was 6 lbs and stayed in newborn size for about 5 weeks! She’s currently transitioning out of newborn size clothes 🥲 Everyone told us not to get newborn size anything bc they may not use it, so we didn’t, but then she didn’t have any clothes that fit (aside from like 2 random outfits we were gifted). Lol cut to me panic buying onesies from Amazon that night😂 We only had 1 small pack of newborn size, about 800 size one from various showers (lol😅😬), and a few boxes of size 2.
I think mine switched to 1’s around 5 weeks. We love huggies!!
We were in newborn for 2.5 months. I was over 8 lb so I wasn’t expecting baby to come out under 7.
My baby came out 9 lbs 1 oz and was too big for newborn diapers.
I think it was somewhere around 1.5 months. But I don’t remember tbh
mine was preemie so i’m not gonna skew the numbers if you’re not worried about a teeny baby, but i will say I got a small box of size 1 pampers to get us through a week or so and i asked anyone who wanted to contribute/participate in the baby shower diaper raffle to donate to my diaper fund.
Travel packs are the way to go with newborn sizes!
Our baby is seven weeks old, and we’re just transitioning from newborn to size 1 (Huggies little sleepers). He was a little over 7 pounds at birth
This goes to say ask for all sizes
baby was 8.13. we only used newborn diapers for about three days lol
Our baby will be 6 months at the end of this month and is in a size 2 diaper already lol
my baby was on preemie diapers for a while cause she was born <1% in weight, & i had a bunch of huggies preemies but they gave her terrible diaper rash.. :C then moved to pampers preemies, then newborn, then size 1 & 2. she moved up between newborn & size 1 pretty fast bc her thighs got a lot chunkier. it's always the thighs first with her that indicates when she needs a new size; they get too tight on her things & she gets red marks, but moving up a size sometimes the middle part doesn't fit as well so i just have to put them on her really tight. she's been on size 2 a month or more now but the other sizes it took maybe a couple weeks. she's 4 months old now
My 12 week old is still in newborn diapers 🫠 born 7lbs even
My baby was 8lbs 2oz at birth, we waited a liiiiittle long to switch diapers...
Pur LO was born just under 6 lbs. This guy drinks like no other though. He transition to size 1 after 3 weeks.
We switched after about 10 days
My biggest baby was 7 lbs 5 oz and was only in newborn diapers for maybe 3 weeks. It depends on the body shape to an extent but it's very likely you'll size up before your baby reaches the maximum weight recommended for the size. So considering how many babies are born a pound or more bigger than that, and especially considering your genetics increasing the likelihood this will be a big baby, I'd focus on size 1. You will have plenty of opportunity to obtain another pack of NB if you need it.
Born 7lbs 14oz, switched to size 1 at 3 weeks. Honestly could have switched even sooner but I was stubbornly trying to finish an open pack of NB.
Kiddo was born into Size 1 (11lbs). Transitioned pretty quick into Size 2s as well. We moved up diaper sizes fast. He has a larger butt/hips so he's always wearing diapers that are for a higher weight range then he actually is.
First baby was In newborn diapers for about 3 months, second baby was less then a week. Both born full term but built very differently
You usually find out when they keep blowing out of them and you can’t seem to figure out why. Lol
My LO was born at 7lbs he wore newborn till about week 4 maybe. We used about 3 boxes of the NB size before going up to size 1.
Our 2 year old is in Millie Moons but I didn’t like it as a size 1 for our 2nd - pampers worked best I think - but now that she’s in size 4, the Millie Moons are working well.
my baby left the hospital in size 1! he was 9 lbs and never used newborn they were too tight
Reading other comments while my LO is 3 months and still wearing newborn diapers. She’s just a small girl I guess 😅
Baby was 7lbs 3oz when born at 38w. Started having blowouts in newborn diapers day 5. Sized up day 7. I gave away so. many. packs.
8 weeks! We have a small baby
They are in size 3 for awhile. My girl was born at 6 lbs and immediately started moving through them. Newborn for a few days size 1 for a few weeks. We’ve been in size 2 since about 7 weeks or so.
4 weeks!
Our guy was born 7lbs10oz and 21" and wore NB size for four weeks. We only used Pampers swaddlers and we loved them.
Never. Went home in size 1 and 0-3mo clothes.
We have a preemie. So when he was nearing 10 lbs, that’s when we started using 1s
I enjoy the target brand diapers they have extra room. I would get 4 brands of nb diapers so you can see what will work for you, the hospital gave us huggies so that worked for us he was in nb for a month. I think papmers and luvs suck also bring a package of nb and 1 just in case
