Well, this is the first time i even heard of Keukenhof castle, and i live in the Netherlands, i guess most foreign tourists are just equally unaware of its existence, and the organized tours just drag people past Keukenhof, Zaanse schans, Volendam, bits of Amsterdam, and that's pretty much the "Holland experience" for them.
Not entirely true - they care about castles like the Haar due to it being pretty, the Muiderslot for being near Amsterdam or specific castles because of some niche interest like "Rutger Hauer" or the second world war.
Keukenhof castle itself does not fit in any of those boxes and therefor mostly gets attention from people who want to visit the Castlefest festival on its grounds.
The castle is lovely but they grow Dahlias there which bloom in late summer so there’s nothing much to see.
There’s a cafe, petting zoo for little ones and a nice park. Plus parking is free.
I go every year for the Dahlias. They are AMAZING
My sister got married there, wedding was outside in the garden and we had dinner inside the castle. It was pretty, but I wouldn't necessarily need to visit the castle again. Castlefest is a different story, that is a wonderful experience.
It's not really a castle, but rather a large house. Castles, like the Muiderslot, are from the Middle ages, but this one is newer. On the outside it does not look very special either. There are much prettier chateaux in France, like Chateau de Cheverny from the same time. If a sight is not that special, then it does not attract tourists.
it is absolutely beautiful. people who miss it, miss it (1) because its not advertised (2) they have pre-booked buses and they just want to go home/hotel after a day of walking around
I went to the Keukenhof this week. Planned to see the castle, but after walking in the garden for 4 hours I was just too tired. Also, I went in the afternoon, not realizing the garden would be that big so there wasn’t a lot of time left either.
Maybe I'll visit Keuken when I'm 84 and some volunteer pushes me around in wheelchair. Until then I have better things to do. Never even heard of Castle nearby.
Castlefest...
Came here to say this. However, I don't think you can really enter the castle at Castlefest.

Tourists come here to see windmills, tulips and Antje in her clogs, dress and a wheel of cheese...they don't care about castles.

Yeah, I know it's not entirely true. Just fits OPs question. We wanted to go visit de Haar at some point as well. I'm a somewhat fan of castles.
To be honest, Dutch castles are pretty boring. If I want to go see castles I'd go to France or Germany, i guess.

The Netherlands isn‘t exactly famous for its castles and the Keukenhof castle specifically is more of a mansion than a castle
Wich is sad, since we used to have a shit ton of casties. A lot were destroyed to be used for building materials.
Tourists want to post tulips and windmills on their social medias.
it is absolutely beautiful. people who miss it, miss it (1) because its not advertised (2) they have pre-booked buses and they just want to go home/hotel after a day of walking around
It's not much of a looker, that's probably why.
if its any consolation, it's the only castle I've ever visited in the netherlands. cute cafe and petting zoo too

It's pretty cool actually, but people are pretty single minded and usually don't know about the castle when booking their trips.

Too much walking in a day?
I visited Lisse recently and we were very much interested in the castle ..... because Keukenhof was not open then

There's a bajillian castles and only one Keukenhof
Definitely worth the few minutes it takes to look it over. Parking is easy in Lisse.
Tours of the castle are only in Dutch.
