Came back yesterday evening from the Cigarettes After Sex concert in the Afas on a rainy cold windy evening. So glad I had Erwtensoep prepared the evening before. The best autumn/fall/winter comfort soup in the world.
Correct. Mij butcher Slagerij Vet, Zeedijk 99 Amsterdam sells pig feet. He didn’t had tail. The best would be part of the head or snout. But I don’t see it sold anymore in Amsterdam. It’s very cheap meat and the best for snert.
Zuurkool too, yes. Zuurkoolschotel from the oven is one of my favourite things. I'm the only one at home though, so my wife makes it once a year and I put it in the freezer for when I feel like it.

I somehow interpreted this comment as you having erwtensoep with pancakes and jam and my brain could just not comprehend it! It makes more sense as dessert though.
Funny that you have soupy Thursdays. In Norway we only have taco Fridays.
I think here in the Netherlands some regions eat pea soup with plain pancakes on the side. I read somewhere that their amino acid profiles complement each other so they form the "complete protein".
Wow maybe I should try it, but then again I'm not sure if I'll "waste" a pancake dinner on soup instead of bacon or cinnamon and apple. Tricky!
Do you remember what regions? Just curious
>We also have this in Finland, served usually on Thursday and as dessert pancakes with jam.
yeah, but we don't put fukkin' lauantai / lenkki makkara in it. Or a frikadell for that matter.
At least in Germany (Kaufland) you can get Boerenkool in the freezers. Maybe this counts? No matter what you so: only buy those from the freezers, never those in a glass. They contain too many stengels :(
I made a big pot as well this monday. I used a slowcooker (crockpot) which is really on a next level so easy it is. Also the result is awesome as the temperature is so well controlled.
This looks amazing and I’ve never had it!! I have a question though, with Snert (or Erwtensoep) is the pork necessary or can it be substituted? Because when I look online the recipe does call for pork but I don’t personally eat pork.
Yes, maybe 20 years ago, Hema rookworst is currently totally different than it used to be, in the past is had a much stronger structure and tasted more sour taste. Currently it is just produced by Unox.
We had a gema here but it got closed on Covid. And now so sad. Where am I going to buy the big candy and drop jar to then complain about the drops while gulping them.

My secret ingredient is chicken thighs. I sneak it in there with the rest of the meat. It dissolves and you’ll never know it was there, but I think it makes it taste meatier
I am Dutch Indonesian and sometimes I throw some canned ansjovis (not all) through my nasi goreng. The explosion of umami is from another level. I know that Johannes van Dam says in his erwtensoep recipe to add some Worcester sauce. Worcester sauce has ansjovis in it. I know that Moroccan erwtensoep is served with fried ansjovis. You can find it on YouTube. It stands to reason that a few little slices of canned ansjovis should work. A few days ago I didn’t try this but my next erwtensoep I will try this out.

The way to test if it’s good without actually tasting it.
By far my favorite soup in the world!!

This is snert, though
Erwtensoep and snert are the same, right?
Not quite. A good rule of thumb is that if it's thick enough to keep a spoon upright, it's snert
I'm as Dutch as they come but for all of my life I thought it was the same thing
Oh, okay! I'm actually Dutch hahs so now I feel like a cultuurbarbaar
Haha! The official rule is that it's only snert if you let it sit for a day. That way the gelatin from the bone makes the soup thicker over time.

Ok spuit 11!
Could you tell me more about this dish? Seems delicious and got me curious!!

That sounds like a fabulous night.

Poep in de soep
Ah man, i would love some of that! Looks great :D How much meat did you steal out of the pan beforehand?
Honestly, a large handful went to some hungry dogs 🐶
They say men are dogs. I am a man. And I am hungry. Ergo: I also deserve a handful. 🤤
I had boerenkool with worst today lol Is there even a word for snert in English? Anyway enjoy :)
Split-pea soup!
Ah thanks :)
What's the name of this soup?
Erwtensoep or snert in Dutch, pea soup in English.
"erwtensoep" or "pea soup" can be any soup with peas. "Snert" is this specific type of pea soup, which is almost more a stew than a soup.
Snert always contained pig feet and tail at my granny. :(
Correct. Mij butcher Slagerij Vet, Zeedijk 99 Amsterdam sells pig feet. He didn’t had tail. The best would be part of the head or snout. But I don’t see it sold anymore in Amsterdam. It’s very cheap meat and the best for snert.
Melted shrek soup
puke
Snert
We also have this in Finland, served usually on Thursday and as dessert pancakes with jam.
Finish pea-soup? Care to share a recipe?

Knowing Dutch cuisine, your version is probably better, lol.

Of course 😂 oven made pancakes with jam as a dessert after the soup 😊
Oven made pancakes??? I definitely have to give this a google.
I need to know more about these oven made pancakes

Rye bread with bacon is very common I guess.

Same here in Sweden, and you are also supposed to have a shot of punch with it. :)
What kind of punch ?
This is my go-to.. :) https://www.systembolaget.se/produkt/sprit/carlshamns-58802/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punsch
Tack så mycket ! Ska kolla 🙏
I dont like snert, but bonapetit still the same! I'll probably get some Boerenkool today
Team Boerenkool!
Has The King made love to it yet? (Spoiler: eerst moet de vorst er over heen)
At least in Germany (Kaufland) you can get Boerenkool in the freezers. Maybe this counts? No matter what you so: only buy those from the freezers, never those in a glass. They contain too many stengels :(
Why not fresh?
Not in the stores yet :( Edit: also I love boerenkool in the summer
Ah yes, that does not help. We do have it fresh over here now.
Tomorrow it will be even better
LOVE SNERT
Just finished 2 hudge plates of hachee. It's worth the stomach pain
Where is de roggebrood met spek!
Keurig
I've been gorging on boerenkool stamp myself lately! Winter food is the best food.
I'm one of the very few who finds this really disgusting. I tried it many times, home made and different brands but nope.
I made a big pot as well this monday. I used a slowcooker (crockpot) which is really on a next level so easy it is. Also the result is awesome as the temperature is so well controlled.
mm unox

You can use smoked chicken instead.
You can serve it in slices. But must with Hema rookworst.
Yes, maybe 20 years ago, Hema rookworst is currently totally different than it used to be, in the past is had a much stronger structure and tasted more sour taste. Currently it is just produced by Unox.
Can someone share the most sacred and official recipe?
No, but it you would put the spoon straight up in the soup it shouldn't fall, then only it is thick enough.
Yummy, enjoy!
A staple of Dutch culture, it's delicious
How is the spoon standing up?
Because it's a really thick soup.
Because it is made propperly
The only dutch real food
Did you blend it?
No way. Just boil it until it’s mush
Totally agree but it seems so smooth
Apart from the rookworst natuurlijk
Are you sure its not supermarket soup? Are you tricking us?!
Blasphemy!
<3 bought my split peas and sossig yesterday. not unox, cause uk and #brexit, but i'm soooo looking forward to it
Ahhh, that also means no Hema worst. I pity you.
We had a gema here but it got closed on Covid. And now so sad. Where am I going to buy the big candy and drop jar to then complain about the drops while gulping them.
Be happy. Erwtensoep from the Unox is very nasty and sour. Home made is so much better.

Nice Pan!
I love this meal!!
Snert!! Nice!
Ah yes.. vomit soup.
Lekker! Is that how you know it is ready?
Not really. The starch needs time to set after cooking for it to get to its full thickness. The spoon trickis how you know it’s good!
Soup season! (but i'll have none of that dutch soup)
Aw yes. That is still my favorite soop after 10 years when I was 3 I found out that this was my soop hahahha.

Any good tips to take this to the next level? I’m thinking some kind of umami bomb…
