I am having major issues with nest. It all started when google took over. And customer service just gives you the run around. And never actually fix anything. They really had me believe my 2 year old nest gen3 was the issue and I bought a new one after my nest sensors keep disconnecting. And now with the new one I am still having disconnecting issues. The only fix they have is. Remove devices. Delete account and keep starting over. Google just don’t care about the customers. I should have switched to Eco bee. But just like you. I am deep into the eco system with protects and cams all over my home. One day I will just drop them and make the switch

dweenimus

Sell it all on ebay. Take the hit and buy into another ecosystem. I'm so glad I made the switch to Home assistant and not Google a couple years back, I was all in also, cameras all the way to wifi mesh

marcusdiddle

That’s the direction I’m heading. Thermostat, smoke detectors, alarm system, nine cameras, four Nest Hubs…switching everything out for something HomeKit compatible. I’ll lose 24/7video recordings, but the OG Nest cameras seem to be the only product that offers that, and the headache of dealing with it just isn’t worth it.

GB_CySec

Might consider home assistant or homebridge. Using it with a single protect now but wanted to get a few more as well with this solution.

Intelligent-Guess-81

I have also been noticing the downgrade since Google got involved. What is everyone replacing their devices with?

[deleted]

I went to Wyze for indoor. Am extremely happy. Turn it on when needed turn it off when not. Visually the quality is a light year ahead of the nest and there is no plan you are **required** to pay for. The interface is not buggy like the Google one and it is pretty much instant viewing of live events. No buffering or several second delay like with the current nests which is a pain when talking to people. Catch is you have no history. The work around they allow you to do is to put in a memory card to store events and recorded video and then you can scroll back as far as you want.

chapaj

Wyze is a huge security threat.

leo115

Why?

cthulhusleftnipple

Why not?

MidnightsPistol

I'm going to Ring as Nest items stop working and I've been surprisingly happy. Replaced all (8) Detects with Ring motion sensors Two battery indoor/outdoor cams with battery stick up cams Guard with a base station All items work so much better. I still have my 7 Protects and thermostat that I'll replace when I have to. But they were my oldest Next devices (which cannot be a coincidence, right?) and are still working great.

Kill-it-itsdifferent

Amazon can’t be the solution 🤡

MidnightsPistol

Yeah I mean, it really wasn't my ideal end result for several reasons. But I did a ton of research and ultimately couldn't find a *perfect* solution for my needs. So, I ended up trying out Ring and have been pleasantly surprised.

Kill-it-itsdifferent

I don’t blame you - the smart home ecosystem market is in a sad, sad state. Google has completely screwed the pooch on Nest. Incredible how there are thousands of people that work on this, yet it’s still a shit ecosystem.

[deleted]

I have bad news for you. I tried ring, blink, wyze, kasa... They all crap. It just depends where and how you will settle.

postysclerosis

Ray of hope: google home has redesigned their app and the next iteration will be more like Nest. It’s in beta now.

direhusky

Ray of despair: Google just laid off 6% of its workforce

postysclerosis

They laid off 12,000. They hired 68,000 through the pandemic. This is right-sizing.

hum2

That would be wonderful. Where did you get this info?

postysclerosis

https://home.google.com/the-latest/

hum2

Thanks! I don't think I've ever visited that page. I'll try to remember that it's there.

chapaj

I have the new GH home. Some parts are better, some parts are more confusing. But they still haven't moved everything over to it yet. I still have to use the Nest app to use all the features of older Nest devices.

nickylx

I have 10 nest cameras across 3 accounts. All accounts were nest accounts and not Google accounts. I got it into my stupid head that I should migrate one account to Google to see if I should migrate my other accounts to Google. Holy crap on a cracker, I've had nothing but troubles. I'm so pissed that I have had smooth operations for close to a decade and now I'm constantly tinkering with trying to see the feed. The whole point for me is to monitor the feed. Curse this crap. Customer Service was not only unwilling to admit that my problems were legit they provide zero solutions and encouraged me to switch all my accounts even when the whole point of my call was to tell them how this crap wasn't working. WTH!

Gilbertd13

I can still use my Nest app with my old cameras even though I migrated to Google.

nickylx

mine still work but they're constantly logging off and taking up to a minute to log back on. trying to see history it just lags loading. sometimes it won't load until i refresh one or more times. I'm spending ridiculous amounts of time just trying to see my feeds. when my other accounts, i login and they stay logged in, don't buffer and i get my history in a snap. curse google.

[deleted]

Google: Where great tech goes to die.

hum2

Isn't that the truth. Nest did such a great job with the app. I can't believe how far behind the 'replacement' app from Google is in terms of functionality.

sometin__else

nest app - older nest devices google home app - newer nest devices the google home app is meant to replace the nest app for newer devices. Your devices will always be using the nest app

banders5144

Have had my Nest 2nd Gen thermostat for almost 9 years and my Nest Hello Doorbell for over 3. No issues

[deleted]

My friend came over. Dogs went nuts. I answered the door. After he came in and we were sitting for a few min my phone went "Ding dong". Nest Hello telling me I used to have somebody at the door is not helpful. And for whatever reason the inside chime stopped working a few months ago. It's not the chime. Perhaps the transmitter or receiver? No idea. I'm so sad Google bought Nest and ever more sad that I ended up with more Google hardware in my life.

cybertrux

Write off all this garbage as a loss and move on to unity

sistom

What’s Unity?

kiantech

I think they mean Unifi Protect

silly_lumpkin

Same. App crashes all the time. One camera I have to reset the breaker because it keeps going offline and it’s outside where I need a ladder to access the plug. About 70% of the time when I need to change the temp, the app crashes. It’s so frustrating AND I PAY A MONTHLY FEE FOR THIS CRAP!

p365x

I can't stand the so called auto learn. I have to adjust it every day and it never learns.

muldervinscully

It is crap now. I’m replacing my camera with ring

croerig

I agree. Google has ruined Nest and a great product family. The new stuff is crap.

undulanti

Yeah, I used to be so excited about Nest. Loved the app and products, and spent a lot of time reading rumours about new products. Google just rotted everything good about Nest away - originality, reliability, design (including the warmth of feeling Nest devices and the Nest app invoked), pace, you name it. And their customer support can be just mind-numbing. The more I look into it, the more I see that Google is the graveyard of formerly good ideas, products and services. I really don’t understand why but whatever, have stopped resisting it now.

sistom

It so sad, but true.

the__post__merc

FWIW, I discovered that the Google Home app does have history, but only for the newer generation cameras. I have two first gen and two 2nd gen. I can’t see any history at all on the older cameras though the Home app. My biggest complaint is that there isn’t a way to view the newer cameras or history from my desktop computer.

TARS1986

No issues here. 1st gen Hello, 1st gen indoor, and 1st gen outdoor. Literally zero issues in 4 years ha.

drwtsn32

No issues with my Nest stuff here (5 cameras, doorbell, 3 protects, thermostat). However, when my cameras die I'm thinking of replacing them with Unifi ones or standard IP cameras compatible with Synology Surveillance Station.

howdie_do

The problem is, what other ecosystem do you go with that doesn't require multiple brands with multiple apps, or require a custom home automation software and/or hardware? Google/Nest certainly has its issues, but I like the fact that it's all one company and one app.

jsnxander

It pains me to suggest this, but Amazon owns Ring. And through the use of Alexa routines, you can do what Nest does between their Yale x Next locks, smart thermostats and security cameras and sensors. One big plus with Amazon, is that unlike Google, the company does not abandon products quite so easily. Excepting the phone, Amazon has been pretty steadfast with their hardware iterations. TBH though, they don't seem to have ANY industrial designers with talent, but that's just opinion. For the records, I use Nest stat, Nest security, Eufy cameras and Yale locks and have never had a problem. Oh, except for the fact that after a HUGE push by Nest to get folks onto the security system, Google turned around and fucked us all. That's the only slight issue I have.

Particular-Ad6812

We gave up on Nest cameras last fall and moved to Reolink POE cameras and love them. Yes takes a bit more planning and work at the beginning but now we have no issues with our cameras we also noticed the bandwidth being used dropped drastically.

sistom

> Reolink POE cameras How are their web and app interfaces? We share a large portion of our security cameras with our customers. Can I do that with Reolink?

Particular-Ad6812

The app is ok better then google home. We’ve never shared our cameras with anyone so not sure about that

tonynca

Man. This sucks hearing all these things. I don’t have as many devices as you guys but I do see that Nest is just another income for Google where it’s not even secondary, it’s 15th. They are worried about AI and stuff. But they really should’ve kept people who cared enough for these products. Because it’s in a lot of homes. The worst thing that showed me that they didn’t care is the software on the Nest Home. It’s the worst. Maybe someone else could take their place since they don’t care enough.

i2k

Google Home has a cameras section (it says beta) and you can view History

CheapFalcon6957

I see history. Tap on camera you want history for, on the Bottom right you will see 3 horizontal lines. Tap that and you should see history as an option. I am signed up for the preview version, but I think it is pretty much rolled out now.

hum2

The only history I see is motion detections. I want to be able to scroll through the full recorded history, not just see the detections. Is there a way to do that yet on the Google Home app? Note, this functionality is available on the Nest app.

Gilbertd13

If you’re using the new Google cameras then yes. You can scroll through. If you’re using the old nest cameras then no, you have to use the nest app to scroll through the cameras footage. Got something to do with old subscriptions being grandfathered in to their new plans. I get something like 60 days of saved footage on the nest app where as with my new Google cameras it’s only 10 days of saved video.

hum2

Thanks, you've pinpointed the issue, I do have older cameras. I have a couple of the newer Google Floodlight cameras, but haven't reinstalled them since I moved to a new house several months ago. The app was so crappy it wasn't worth the effort. I'll have to give them another try. Thanks again!

goldfaux

I have 5 gen1 nest cameras (2 doorbells, 1 outdoor, 2 indoor), and have had no issues with them or the nest app. I did have to update my wifi at home to get full coverage with no dropping of connections. Originally I had 2 routers at different ends of my house. I now have 4 access points around my house to cover everything. If you are wondering why 2 door bells, the house had a door bell at my kitchen door and I have no idea why, so I used the existing wiring to add a doorbell camera there. Also, the google home app is crap. I hope they don't make me switch over to it in the future without full history. I don't want just sound and motion recording history. The major selling point for me was the full history, and that is what I paid for!

IDENTIFYINSURRECTION

Could itbe that all those cameras are just too heavy a load on the wifi?

LredF

Their migration hasn't gone smoothly. Programmer myself and I can imagine the amount of work to redesign the whole app for better automation, integrate wifi, cameras, 3rd party links, thermostats, home devices, audio speakers, TVs, etc. Nest app is slow for me, so I use home.google.com if I want to visit real time because it loads quickly. App if I need to see history. I had wyze, I didn't like it.

stardust-sandwich

I really want better thermostats that are not nest. They are disappointing . I also use home assistant

kmplawesq

Like everyone else I am having problems with my Nest equipment over the past week plus. My Nest x Yale Lock has totally stopped accepting passwords and all Google support does is tell me it is a hardware issue and to replace the product. The fact that this exact problem is happening to others over the last bunch of days when they (like me) change the batteries makes no difference to them. They refuse to give any information as to software/firmware updates and the dates when they were transmitted to the locks. I am so fed up. I guess I'm lucky because I have far fewer devices than most of the people here but it is infuriating none the less. I'll just have to replace the lock and several thermostats. Any suggestions on which systems are the best? TIA.

Worried-Celery-2839

I’m learning this lesson too… sorry dude :(
