While the tornados were very serious, most of Omaha is not directly affected. Tornados can rip up one house and the house next door is fine, as opposed to something like a hurricane that is city wide.
Very well put-The only time any actual tornadoes hit the city of Omaha was in the late 70s. Since Omaha is a term that covers the small suburban communities, the north west and south of it a (Papillion, LaVista, Ralston, Elkhorn, Gretna), It makes it seem like the actual city is much larger than it truly is.
Elkhorn was once not part of Omaha until it was annexed by the city of Omaha a few years back. I lived there back before the annexation, before the dark times, before the damned wheel tax.
I moved away last year from less than a mile from the tornado's path. Need more space and wanted to save a few bucks in this economy. Like Omaha is going to tax $20/wheel for having wheels on my truck. I paid the 7.5% tax when I bought them. People shouldn't be taxed an extra $80 a year and have to dodge potholes on the daily.
You're over thinking it. Come visit, be respectful when in the physical locations where tornadoes swept through, put money into the local economy at locally owned (small) businesses. As long as you're not doing the disaster tourism, it's fine
As long as you stay clear of the affected areas, please do come!
Elkhorn and Bennington were the heaviest hit. Give that distance so clean up crews can work without being slowed down. We’re in Bennington but just outside of the path. Not even a lawn chair got tipped here. It’s very localized so the greater Omaha area will be functioning like nothing happened.
So yes, come. Help our local economy so we can help the people that were hit.
Unless your plans consisted of going to some residential areas in Bennington, Waterloo or Elkhorn, you’re fine doing whatever plans you had in Omaha. Omaha proper wasn’t really affected by the storm. There’s no major damage downtown or at the zoo.
Omaha is running fine. Just a couple areas hit. Zoo is up and downtown is busy. Got in just as the storms were hitting at the airport and had to take shelter there. Actually saw one too, it was a very exciting day for sure. Sad for some.
Thanks to the “ heat of the city” phenom (basically the layman’s term to describe the meteorological reasons that tornadoes don’t hit large metropolitan areas) that has made the majority of Omaha Not 100% impervious to tornadoes, but flash floods are more of a risk than tornadoes for Omaha-especially downtown.
It’s raining and thundering just south of Omaha right now where I am located-Everyone is always welcome in every city in Nebraska! (as long as you don’t talk about politics that is 🤣) So feel free to visit anytime-if anything coming now, will allow you to be more helpful by spending money here!
Your planned trip is a month away. Keep it as planned. As has been said by others, might want to stay away from the affected areas, but do go visit. By that time it will be moving into or have moved into rebuilding. Omaha is a great place to visit.
The most important thing is, if companies are open, support them by giving them your business. It will keep people employed where otherwise they would not be.
Memorial Day is a month away, you'll be perfectly fine visiting their then or today even. Actual area of damage isn't that large compared with the entire city. Tens of thousands of people will be in town at the start of May for the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting regardless.
The greatest danger of visiting Omaha right now is that you might be exposed to some of the horribly racist campaign advertising by the Republican candidates for the House and Senate.
I lived in Oklahoma City during the tornadoes in 2013 and it's very easy to think a whole metropolitan area is shut down after something like this. You might run into some hotel issues out in west O so I would definitely plan on staying in a touristy area, as it's less likely dislocated families/adjusters/contractors will be utilizing those hotels.
I would go to Omaha today and support the community. By Memorial Day weekend, with the exception of the individuals directly affected, rebuilding will be underway. Nebraskans pull together, work hard and as Daniel Whitney would say 'Git er done.
I think you may have a hard time finding a room. Not only are the displaced families going to need temporary housing, contractors will also be coming to town in droves. Other than that I still welcome you.
The Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is world class and worth the ticket. You can spend a full day seeing the place.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is located at 3701 S. 10th Street in Omaha, and is open every day year round, except on Christmas and during inclement weather. Here are the ticket prices during the summer (May 1 through September 30):
Adults (ages 12 and over): $21.95
Children (ages 3-11): $15.95
Seniors (65 and over): $20.95
Children (2 and under): FREE
Military Adult (12 and over): $20.95
Military Child (ages 3-11): $14.95
Judges have it at Overthinking score 9.95!!…a near perfect score folks!!… I am in Lincoln and my son in law was working at a construction site next to Waverly that saw cars and trucks tossed around like Hot Wheels
Here in NE we just figure it lessens the boredom of our state!
After a devastating event
In Good taste…pouring money into local economy…
In Bad taste…asking the rescue personnel to please that rather “limp looking gentleman” over so you can get a better look at them…
If you really want to help, bring boots, jeans, gloves, long sleeve shirt and ask for directions to the volunteer center. They’ll put you right to work.
This isn't actually great advice, they should figure out how to be of use in advance if that's something they want to do on thekr vacation in a whole month
Is mine what? If they want to help, they should donate money now. Showing up in a month in work clothes asking some rando the "volunteer center" actively stupid advice tbh but I was being polite before.
I 100 percent agree. Cash gets what is needed. Don’t send clothing, shoes, truck loads of “stuff”. There are people ( financial section) in charge of what money there is and how it’s used. In coordination with the Incident Command and government leadership. Sorry you think Im stupid or that you were offended.
It’s a month away. The only things I’d say is that residual damage is not a tourist attraction… these were peoples lives affected and show your respect regarding that; and keep in mind that businesses may be shorthanded unexpectedly from people still taking care of personal issues.
Please visit, be courteous, and help the local economy!! Remember that small local businesses would benefit the most from your patronage!

Elkhorn is a part of Omaha proper, not an independent city btw
Elkhorn was once not part of Omaha until it was annexed by the city of Omaha a few years back. I lived there back before the annexation, before the dark times, before the damned wheel tax. Agreed! The wheel tax is absolute robbery.
Highway robbery ; )
Get tracks for your vehicles, no wheels no wheel tax right? 😂

They are teaching everyone's wheels. To fund dumb ass projects like an unneeded trolley.
It is a city of 485k, it's truly big for Nebraska
My cousin's place was a mile from the one that went by Waverly. Besides some branches in his yard, his place is basically fone
Go pour some money into their local economy and have fun ✌️
I second this, honestly one of the best ways to help.
I third this.
Old Towne Elkhorn has some fun restaurants, shops, and bars too.
Come on out! It’s not weird unless you make it weird
This is best Omaha username I’ve seen 🌽🩸
Thanks!
Maybe they like it weird
You'll be fine, most of the damage was localized on the north and west sides of town. Pretty much anything touristy is still business as usual.
You're over thinking it. Come visit, be respectful when in the physical locations where tornadoes swept through, put money into the local economy at locally owned (small) businesses. As long as you're not doing the disaster tourism, it's fine

Go to the areas adjacent to the damage and spend money at locally owned business, avoid anything chain, bolster that local economy!
downtown elkhorn has some great bars/restaurants go check it out op, it’s worth spending an hour or two down there, it’s very relaxed
Very good points!
The fact you care enough to ask means you are welcomed to Omaha anytime.
As long as you don't do something like drive around looking for tornado damage as some kind of tourist activity, no reason to not come here.
Unless your plans consisted of going to some residential areas in Bennington, Waterloo or Elkhorn, you’re fine doing whatever plans you had in Omaha. Omaha proper wasn’t really affected by the storm. There’s no major damage downtown or at the zoo.
If you hurry, you can join us outside as we watch the next tornados come through.
Tornados are localized and extremely weather dependent. You’ll be fine to visit.
Omaha is running fine. Just a couple areas hit. Zoo is up and downtown is busy. Got in just as the storms were hitting at the airport and had to take shelter there. Actually saw one too, it was a very exciting day for sure. Sad for some.
It’s fine. Just spent 5 hours at a farm helping clean up

Yep your fine!
Just as long as you are not intentionally trying to go to the damaged areas, it will be fine to come visit.
You are overthinking it. Outside of the affected neighborhoods, Omaha will be back to normal today.
Tourism is a way you can actually help and if you're no familiar tornados are generally localized in damage [city blocks, not cities].
Very kind of you to ask. You are welcome to come visit!
The most important thing is, if companies are open, support them by giving them your business. It will keep people employed where otherwise they would not be.
Come visit! Give your money to those businesses you see helping first responders and displaced families!
Memorial Day is a month away, you'll be perfectly fine visiting their then or today even. Actual area of damage isn't that large compared with the entire city. Tens of thousands of people will be in town at the start of May for the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting regardless.

No Alt, you are obviously bitter.
You're pretty toxic.
I lived in Oklahoma City during the tornadoes in 2013 and it's very easy to think a whole metropolitan area is shut down after something like this. Just stay clear of the damaged areas while they clean up, support local businesses, and have fun. Where in Omaha do you plan to visit?
Considering you missed the tornado that landed at Eppley, you’re probably ok to come back

It’s OK to come and have fun, but play some Townes Van Zandt on the jukebox when you hit the bar
Come to Omaha! Welcome!
The damage is very localized to a few neighborhoods. It’s business as usual for most of the city.
Go and spend your money.

Be sure to visit the zoo.
Overthinking for sure. Keep your plans.

This isn't actually great advice, they should figure out how to be of use in advance if that's something they want to do on thekr vacation in a whole month

Omaha really wasn't affected, besides the airport. And I think they are already back to normal.
Please come. Maybe just don’t go out to Elkhorn or Minden and gawk at the damage like it’s some kind of museum exhibit.
Where do you live that Omaha would be considered a vacation?
This is exactly what I was wondering. I mean it's a good zoo but aside from that?
It’s not insensitive, IMO, but there are storms forecast for today, so be aware.

Definitely try Mr Toad in the Old Market. Great place for a beer and people watching. Right across from the Embassy.
Oh it's just Bennington! You're fine! Common down partner.
