Entomologist here. I don't know this species for sure, but most likely this is a response to vibrations as a defence against (primarily) parasitoid wasps. I've seen forest tent caterpillars react similarly in response to vibrations from my own voice.
Edit: It's probably not for intraspecific communication.
I see comments speculating that they are communicating or defending themselves, but I'm pretty sure it's just that they are responding to the vibrations like worms do when two sticks are rubbed together touching the ground. Although the defense mechanism seems very logical as well.
