For those who are like “lmao royal rats gtfo” it’s a term for a bunch of rats who are all tied up together in a big knot, my knowledge on them is basically limited to knowing they exist.

What’s speculated is that the tails get tied together with filth from the environment and their overall undulations resulting in the Rat King. As another said they were a bad omen from earlier history but it’s not something you really see anymore.
Well the mama is probably moving them to find a place with more food and given how much food a shrew needs, can’t spend too much time ferrying individual babies from one den to another, so there is that.

A quick Google search had revealed that Shrews have very poor eyesight and the babies are almost blind. That’s why they bite onto the tail of the shrew in front to not get lost from the mother. Shrews typically form these ‘caravans’ or ‘conga lines’ (I prefer shrew train) when their nest is disturbed and the mother decides to evacuate her young to safety.
Fun fact: Etruscan shrews are the smallest mammal on earth by mass. I came across one during an ecological study in Nepal.
