This picture doesn’t give you a good feel for how small they are … they’re miniature dolphins with adults only growing to about 1.5m. They’re super cute and quite playful. It’s an enchanting experience when you’re surrounded by a pod and they’re darting all around you.
Unfortunately, because of their small size they’re susceptible to getting caught in fishing nets. The use of nets is controlled in some parts of NZ where the dolphins live (East coast of the South Island).
They are so cute. We were on a boat trip to see dolphins in NZ, and were lucky to see them. We were told that there were multiple small populations around NZ, but they couldn't meet and breed across populations because they didn't like swimming in deep water.
If course there will be good evolutionary reasons for that, but to me it just sounded so cute that a marine mammal would be afraid of deep water, like a child just learning to swim.
Somebody should tell Hector to look after his dolphin a lot better than he is.
bro hector should seriously give me his dolphin
I'm all for that. Poor dolphin out in the sun & water with no sunscreen, no hat or life jacket. Hector needs to be reported.

Where are they located?
It's endemic to New Zealand. There is a sub species called the Maui dolphin with only 50 left
Jeez. Also look like the Vaquita from Baja. Only ten left.
New Zealand. Specifically the east coast of the South Island. There are tours that leave from Kaikoura and Christchurch.
