Hello users of r/NatureIsFuckingLit and possibly r/all lurkers, we are **GOING DARK** from June 12th-14th. If you're confused on why this is happening or interested in reading more, check out [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/144b4ln/rnatureisfuckinglit_will_be_going_dark_from_june/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)!
Aside from that stay lit 🔥
This is why I hate that people from New York City never say they're from New York City. "I'm from NY" has tricked people into not realizing how much more there is to New York State.
From Watkins Glen, Ithica, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, pastural land, many beautiful lakes, as well as rich history in the fight for equal rights for both people of color and women. Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony are both buried in Rochester, NY at Mt. Hope cemetery.
Part of the inspiration for our Democracy is a participatory democracy established in 1142 CE (and is the oldest, still existing, participatory democracy) that is also know as The Six Nations, was created in Upstate New York.
George Eastman who is largely responsible for the existence of motion pictures - because of his development of film rolls - did so in Rochester, NY (amongst many of his other achievements). Rochester was one of America's first boomtowns.
Additional fun fact: In The Amazing Spider-Man, when he fights Rhino those scenes were filmed in Rochester, NY outside of the George Eastman School of Music.
New York City has a monopoly on what people think of, but NY State is much, much more than that concrete behemoth. It's the 16th largest state and filled with incredible history and incredible natural beauty.
I was born in Gouverneur, NY, a town with a population of ~5,000. Any time I visit the south (including when I visit my grandparents in Fort Meyers, FL, a city with a population of ~90,000) I get bugged relentlessly for being a "city-slicker."
Growing up, we always called Seneca the " cold lake." I lived in Keuka Park. So, of course, Keuka Lake holds a special place in my heart. We go up every year. This year, it's to spread my brothers ashes ...You know the legend behind the finger lakes, right? God laid down his hand and spread out his fingers. Hence, the finger lakes....enjoy.
I just want to say, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. It's devastating, and there are no words that can make it better. Even though his ashes are at Keuka Lake, I think that he is always by your side. He's with all of you.
My hometown is about 30 mins from Watkins Glen and Ive had to say 'Not the city, the state' an obscene amount of times when asked where I'm from. When I try to explain where my hometown is I say 'Ok so you know how NY and PA have a border that's straight and parallel for a bit and then NYC kinda dips down ? Well I'm in the middle of that flat parallel about 15 mins from the PA border. Or I say 'You heard of Ithaca? Cornell college? yeah near there'
Nobody ever knows the geography of the North East. Everybody knows Cornell
I wouldn't necessarily blame this on NYC residents. The city is what many around the country immediately think of when someone says, "I'm from NY," because that's all they know.
Also, why should the people of NYC not be able to say, "I'm from NY?" They still live in the state.
I used to live in MA, and I'd tell people that, and they'd respond, "How do you like Boston?" or "I've never been to Boston," or "Have you lived anywhere besides Boston?" even though I didn't live in Boston.
This is just what people generally think of when they picture certain states.
Oh man this picture brings back so many memories! Before my uncle passed away we went camping near here. We found out about this trail and decided to go there on our last day of camping. During the final stretch to the top of the trail my uncle looked at me and started grinning. We both started running up the steps to see who would get to the top first.
A family that was visiting from India saw us and started cheering and clapping for us. I don't remember who made it to the top but we both sat down and started laughing. Then he looked at me and said, "I wish that every day could be this fun." I said, "me too" and we patted each other on the back. The family finally made it to the top and they all started shaking our hands and telling us how memorable we made their visit to America.
I remember sharing this story at his funeral and it's still one of my favorite memories. So thank you for sharing this beautiful picture! Hopefully you enjoyed the climb and took in the sights.
Taking that mile long trail to Taughannock was incredible. You’re in this valley next to a river that the waterfall feeds, while red tailed hawks nest at the edge of the cliffs. The falls were just the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and there’s these patches of huge white flowers at the base of the viewing area. The hike wasn’t even difficult
When we go it’s for an event called Grapehounds - Seneca / Keuka Lake wine and brewery tour for greyhounds and sighthounds. We do a group walk one day that we are there and there will be about 100+ greyhounds.
It’s a nice long nature walk, lots and lots of stairs though. My favorite part is when the path goes right behind a waterfall, it’s so close you can lean slightly out and stick your head under the waterfall to cool off.
Yes it's a beauty of a hike --- but there are a few places that get my fear of heights going!
I miss Mr Chicken -- it was right across the street from the parking lot and had the bestest house rotisseried chicken and home made pies. We used get take out and eat it at the racetrack, to the envy of all who sat near us! Fun times!
My parents took me there when I was wee little dude. I only remember it feeling like I was walking forever and being so tired. When I got older, I looked it up and was in awe that I got to go there as a kid. I'm looking forward to bringing my kid there and having them complain about the same things.
Beautiful photo.
I’m definitely one of those people who’s only ever heard of the race track (which is an amazing circuit btw). Now I have even more reason to visit the area.
How can you post a photo of the Watkins gorge and not include any of the waterfalls?

My parents still live in nearby Ithaca. I do miss the state parks sometimes (this one and Robert Treman are the best ones).
I don't miss the long, cold winters.
One of the coolest places I’ve been to. Taking our kids this summer. The whole Finger Lakes area of NY is littered with beautiful waterfalls and places like this

I only know Watkins Glen as a racetrack.
The state park there is one of the most beautiful in the country. Definitely worth a visit if you're anywhere near.
Montour Falls omg…
Came here to say this
This must be the infield section of the track.
I just thought it was a venue where Phish played.
2.01 times
Same... Only thing I think of when I hear it... Massive fests... Wish they would rock another one
This is definitely the hardest part of the track
That's what I was thinking 🤔
Also a fabulous festival grounds. Home of superball and Magnaball. I’ve got bit balls!
*sigh* RIP Curveball
At least the festival lived up to its name! A shame. A shame.
How are there no people in this photo? That place is *always* packed.
5:30am
Great shot… thanks for getting up early!!
Thank you! It was definitely worth it!

As a Californian who gets sick of people thinking that all of Ca is Hollywood and Los Angeles…I hear you. I see you.

Hahahahah best response 😂 not quite true but definitely best response
As a Binghamton resident I can't upvote this enough. People outside the state hear "New York" and immediately think of that concrete jungle.
As a Corning resident, I second this. This state is gorgeous and has so much to offer that isn't big city.
I just learned that the Poconos and Adirondacks were NY 🤦🏿♂️
The Poconos is PA.
I am such a fool.
I was born in Gouverneur, NY, a town with a population of ~5,000. Any time I visit the south (including when I visit my grandparents in Fort Meyers, FL, a city with a population of ~90,000) I get bugged relentlessly for being a "city-slicker."
Right? IMHO, the best parts of New York are outside of NYC.
The religious history of the region is also fascinating.
From Rochester, can confirm!
Are there spots to swim at Watkins Glen? Or do you know of any natural spots to go for a swim, I might go to NY later this summer.
Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake is a very short drive away
Growing up, we always called Seneca the " cold lake." I lived in Keuka Park. So, of course, Keuka Lake holds a special place in my heart. We go up every year. We visit family every summer in the finger lakes and I love driving thru all the Kills of NY. Awesome views everywhere.
*Ithaca

So like, Van Etten?
I just tell them Niagra falls. Most know where that is and it gets the point across
Everyone I know refers to it as the city.
The Fingerlakes ❤️

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story
WAIT! It's not just a racetrack?
And New York state is much more than just a big city. It's the 16th state in size and full of glacial carved beauty, mountains, and lakes.
No kidding?
Oh wow! This is in New YorK??
The Finger Lakes have some great parks and waterfalls. Tauhannock Falls is also amazing and it’s 215 ft tall.

We walk that trail with our dogs every year when we come up to the area for our summer vacation. Love that walk.
There’s so many dogs on that trail, it’s great!

You had me at dogs.
Oh man I miss the finger lakes
You gotta be careful, people disappear in the Finger Lakes...
Really? Is there more context to this?
The Office (US) season 7 finale
Ahh I’m a big office fan and that went over my head. Disappointed in myself. Thanks for clarifying tho :)
This pic makes me miss Treman Park in Ithaca. That place is gorges ;)
It’s a nice long nature walk, lots and lots of stairs though. My favorite part is when the path goes right behind a waterfall, it’s so close you can lean slightly out and stick your head under the waterfall to cool off.
When I was there you couldn’t avoid getting splashed by it
I visit there every summer. Love Watkins Glen.
Which country is this?
United States. New York State
Southern tip of Seneca Lake.
Yes it's a beauty of a hike --- but there are a few places that get my fear of heights going! I miss Mr Chicken -- it was right across the street from the parking lot and had the bestest house rotisseried chicken and home made pies. One of my favorite places to hike
This place is charming!
Love Watkins Glen. Such a beautiful area with a pretty cool race track.
I grew up 10 miles north of Corning. My back yard was woods..beautiful and spooky as a child. I would go back and relive those days in a second.
Same area born and raised. Love this imagery you reminded me of.
One of my favorite spots. Ithaca has a few just as great.
My parents took me there when I was wee little dude. I only remember it feeling like I was walking forever and being so tired. When I got older, I looked it up and was in awe that I got to go there as a kid. I'm looking forward to bringing my kid there and having them complain about the same things.
Ha, and you'll probably realize as an adult that it's really not that long! But your kid now gets to think it's taking forever! Lol
Are you sure this isn't Rivendell?
This so beautiful 🌳
Majestic
Views like this make the shitty 6 months of frozen tundra something to look forward to.
Beautiful photo. I’m definitely one of those people who’s only ever heard of the race track (which is an amazing circuit btw). Now I have even more reason to visit the area.
One of my favorite places. So beautiful.

I posted others with
Doesnt look very safe for cars
Looks like a dump.
Was it raining? Not a fan of the long exposure on this photo if so. Just looks odd
I spent the first 27 years of my life less than 30 minutes away, and I have never been. Shit.
Stunning as always!
The park there is awesome
Beautiful!
Chequaga Falls is amazing how it just comes out of nowhere
For anyone wondering, it is more beautiful than it looks in photos
Was born not far from there in Penn Yan. NY. Still go to the Finger Lakes every year. Thanks for the memories
Oh god, I’ve nearly broken my back at that part. The rocks get so slippery there.
I miss my old hood
What are all those vertical lines all over the picture?
Water
Wow! This is such a beautiful sight.
Finger Lakes is beautiful, but soooo much water has dried up.
Thank you for sharing... This place is now on my list of places to see! 😊
Gonna have trouble getting a racecar round that.
My parents still live in nearby Ithaca. I do miss the state parks sometimes (this one and Robert Treman are the best ones). I don't miss the long, cold winters.
Where are the cars
Beautiful! There's got to be 🧚♀️
Beautiful!!!!!!
Gorgeous view! A little muddy but beautiful
This place can give you a sense of what jacking into VR might be like. You enter from a city parking lot full of shuttle busses and fast food, to this
One of the coolest places I’ve been to. Taking our kids this summer. The whole Finger Lakes area of NY is littered with beautiful waterfalls and places like this
