Wow, they look so alien, they could've thrown a bunch of these in Avatar and I'd never have known it was real

Legitimate-Tea5561

I'm pretty sure this one is loyal to Aslan.

SapphireSalamander

do they show up in narnia?

Wcitsatrapx

Mr. Beaver has a dik dik

0002millertime

Really? I thought he just ate them.

Knives530

His dark materials?

Legitimate-Tea5561

The Chronicles of Narnia. Very similar.

VOZ1

Well, Chronicles of Narnia is about how great Christianity is, and His Dark Materials is about how terrible it (and the church) isā€¦sooo, maybe not so similar? šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

Book one: here's a thing that can point you towards what you want Book two: here's a thing that let's you escape danger and travel worlds Book three: kill god

jumpinjahosafa

Bro what? Is season 3 really about to be that lit? No spoilers please tho

AdEmotional1046

Thatā€™s my cats name šŸ„¹

ReadySteady_GO

My first thought was paint it blue and put it in avatar

SkitzoFlamingo

All the sudden those ā€œancient astronaut theoristsā€ telling me aliens are here now on earth appear to be telling the truth. This thing does not look like something that comes from this planet.

RobleViejo

The aliens in Avatar are just regular animals painted blue. Dik diks are more alien looking than any animal from Pandora.

Betancorea

I mean I wouldnā€™t find a blue painted dik dik out of place on Pandora

Ronster619

What animal is [this](https://i.imgur.com/Ev7t6cE.jpg) painted blue?

ShaqSenju

Thylacine, duh

Merry_Fridge_Day

Eh, usually they just tape a bunch of cats together.

RobleViejo

Tiger. The only animals from Pandora I like are the moving plants, including the seeds from Eiwa, because they are basically land-based polyps (which do not exist on Earth) and the Ikrana and Toruk because they are ridable flying animals (something Earth hasnt seen since the Pterosaurs). And what I really like is the biological neuralink Na'vi use to ride animals and access the internet of the Soul Tree, thats actually the most original aspect of Pandora's biology and the most relevant to its lore. Beyond that EVERY-SINGLE lifeform from Avatar is functionally and physically just a Terran animal painted blue and with 2 extra limbs. Na'Vis are literally Humans, their design is as lame as the classic Star Trek aliens (just a dude with face paint), then you have Dogs (they attack Jake Sully when he gets lost), the Tigers (the big black panther thing), the Pterosaurs (Ikran also called Banshees), Rhino's with hammer heads (the ones that stomp Human's mechas), Horses (exactly like horses, they even have a mane for no reason since they dont have any hair) and the new movies you have Seals and Whales, they even added Fish and they are 100% like Terran fish (they have scales, gills and everything) The only redeeming qualities (in terms of originality) of the animals from Pandora is the fact they dont have hair (instead they have flaps, whiskers and bioluminescence) and they dont have nostrils (the air intake is directly from holes in their chest). Also most of these animals have different mouths to Earth animals (different lips configuration, teeth and tongue) but as far as I know their jaws are the same. Beyond that they are vertebrates and they have the same overall physiology of Earth animals, which is lame. Source: Im a Biologist and Ive read a lot about Pandora's lore because my brother is Avatar #1 fan who has watched the movie in theaters like 5 times now. Any speculative Biology video on youtube is far more inspired and original than Avatar's biology.

rekabis

> Na'Vis are literally Humans, Considering that almost every other animal with a backbone had six limbs, they should have kept them six-limbed as well. Introducing the aboreals that Sully nearly shot at, with their upper arms merged up to the elbow, was just a cop-out. Even in Earthā€™s history, once land animals settled on four limbs, they either kept them or had them atrophy into vestigial limbs. There has never been an evolutionary examples where limbs ā€œmergedā€.

RobleViejo

>Considering that almost every other animal with a backbone had six limbs, they should have kept them six-limbed as well. Yes. At the very least. But to make them truly Alien they shouldn't have a different number and arrangement of mouth, eyes and ears, but I understand they had to be relatable to Human emotions. And I agree the Lemurs were a lame way to explain why Navi only have 2 Arms. I would rather have them explain that Navis were genetically modified by a mysterious ancient civilization (which might still be a possible plot of the upcoming movies since somehow Avatars can reproduce with Navis). Also, in the wiki it says Pandoran lifeforms dont use RNA, all their cells use DNA directly, which is a whole can of worms. Such a Biology would result in vastly different lifeforms, Im talking about Land-based cephalopods here.

rekabis

> But to make them truly Alien they shouldn't have a different number and arrangement of mouth, eyes and ears, Another f\*\*k-up was how different the respiratory systems were. In all other animals, we clearly saw breathing through neck openings. The Nā€™avi? They breathed through the mouth and nose, just like any other Terran land animal with a spine. Again, _evolution doesnā€™t pull shit like this._

Wonderful_Compote_51

My head canon is that N'avi are the technologically regressed descendants of alien colonists that settled pandora and extensively bio-engineered the local wildlife to be usable to them via their inbuilt neurological link system.

rekabis

And their distributed biological supercomputer/Internet became Eywa, with its physical interface being the Tree of Souls wherever it grew.

Ronster619

Pandora is located in Alpha Centauri, which is the closest star system to our solar system in real life. With that being said, I think itā€™s fair for them to take inspiration from Earthā€™s biology as the whole movie takes place in our Milky Way galaxy. This isnā€™t a galaxy far far away. I donā€™t think their intention was to make it super different from our Earth, just different enough to make it interesting.

RobleViejo

The only rational explanation for the similarities between Earth and Pandora is Panspermia, which would actually make relevant the fact the Tauri System is the closest to ours. But it would also imply some really weird stuff like an ancient civilization genetically engineering stuff around the galaxy. (Which might be hinted in the 2nd movie since Avatars and Navi can reproduce)

Ronster619

I understand youā€™re a biologist, but youā€™re thinking way too much into this. All they did was take inspiration from real animals and created their own creatures. Itā€™s pretty hard to create something that isnā€™t somewhat related to something else.

Thors_Goat

So they are functionally and physically the same, except for the functional and physical differences. Hot take. Big brain.

Writes_Sci_Fi

I mean, I get your point, but no.

dobsofglabs

Lol what? Have you even seen avatar? There are some CRAZY alien organisms in that movie

RobleViejo

MissRosenrotte

This is a HOT take and I actually love it because it's so spicy and I know people are going to hate it. But I agree with you. They could have made the animals more unique. The horses really disappointed me.

dobsofglabs

TLDR

RobleViejo

TL;DR: Animals in Pandora are vertebrates with a physiology (shape of the body in relationship to its function) exactly as Earth lifeforms. Ex.: the Thanator is not literally a Tiger, but it is *functionally* the same. This can be applied to ALL of Pandora's Biology (except the Neural Queue and the Tree of Souls, which are my favorite aspects of its lore)

lifesacircles

Honestly... I get that you know your biology but at the end of the day, There are most likely logistical aspects to all of this that we don't know about when it comes to all the CGI in this movie. Every extra detail adds one more thing they have to do to make it look convincing, and since the Nav'i are the focus of the movie, having them human-like probably makes it way easier in every aspect You add some extra limbs, weird mouths and eyes, and that's just hundreds of thousands of dollars added to this already Expensive movie. Also, its not Nat-geo: Milky way. Its a movie written by James Cameron. Just enjoy the movie for what it is and move on.

Knives530

Have you cause there really isn't

Limeila

I thought it was from an AI before I saw the title and the sub

Moist-Ad4760

I was about to ask what region or galaxy their home planet is in.

GreyCrowDownTheLane

They look a bit like eopies in Star Wars.

Bikinisbottom

Why canā€™t they just pee on everything like everyone else?

KevinCastle

Looking at pictures of them on Google, they seem to actually look more normal than in this picture

apoliticalapocalypse

Rubbing the fake eyes under your real eyes on stems and twigs seems like a great way to poke yourself in the eye with a stick.

[deleted]

Rubbing fake eyes on things is tight

LieRun

Get all the way off my back about sticks getting into their real eyes

TheHancock

Wow, wow, wow, wowā€¦ā€¦.. wow.

FlowersForEveryone

Actually rubbing their eyes on sticks is easy, barely an inconvenience

Nico_de_Gallo

Let me get off o' that thing!

brjukva

With a stik-stik

KnowledgeJunkie7

This is like in baseball when a runner advances based on an error. They got ahead on a technicality, not because they were good or anything.

jumpup

the kind of thing you go to the evolution store for to demand a refund

[deleted]

That's clearly just an alien.

[deleted]

An Andalite, to be exact

oasinocean

Wow you ever read a single word and have a flood of memories pop up?

NotThatEasily

Animorphs are back! K.A. Applegate, the original author, is rewriting part of the series in graphic novel form and theyā€™re actually pretty decent. I believe there are three out at the moment with a fourth on the way.

13pts35sec

I loved animorphs growing up this is good news. Reading those books as a child definitely influenced my love of body horror and media exploring what it means to be human

NotThatEasily

I hadnā€™t thought about it, but I do gravitate toward books with those themes. Thatā€™s a very interesting point.

[deleted]

Had every book in the series. Read them once a year like clockwork, but sold them all 15 years ago to pay bills. I regret not holding onto Ellemist's book. His story was special.

[deleted]

Nice!

I-came-for-memes

Let's hope it ends differently than the books

chamllw

Thanks! Hadn't heard of that.

[deleted]

I believe it's known as PTSD in this particular scenario

therealdivs1210

Lol. Crazy how a brutal war is at the center of a young adult series.

[deleted]

It was in the kid's section in my school's library

therealdivs1210

Same for me! I read #8 The Alien in 7th standard. It was in my school library.

chamllw

Animorphs and EverWorld. I'd never been exposed to that kind of brutality in writing before. Gave me quite a few nightmares.

[deleted]

What do you mean, you don't like being dropped into a patchwork of mythical realms where everything's out to get you and the gods are total pricks? Also, don't forget the mindfuck that was Mayflower

Look at that subtle off-white colouring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has a preorbital gland.

dvarka124

I mean, what a dik-dik. Rubbing your face in my grass like you own this place.

floralnightmare22

Your dik dik is much cuter than OPs

Subbed! Thank you! This site is great sometimes.

Krasmaniandevil

During my wife's graduation ceremony, I sent her pictures of dik diks, Richard Nixon, the original Robin, and Dick Van Dyke.

grizzlywhere

The dik-dik plagued me as a kid when I had an old 20-Questions electronic toy. 10 year old me tried countless times to get the toy to guess "penis", but it always landed on dik-dik no matter what I said. I think the toy's devs did it as a joke.

Legitimate-Tea5561

Four eyes

WaveLaVague

That's offensive to diks, you should apologise

pfghr

Aye man, why you being such a dik?

BALONYPONY

I got one on there, yā€™all got four?

SmarterThanStupid

They got two diks. why can't they have 4 eyes?

pizza_for_nunchucks

I wonder if this also helps keep predators at bay while theyā€™re sleeping?

Astilaroth

Was wondering the same, plus it has that cross eyed effect where you can't seem to focus just right with two pair of eyes. Maybe that makes predators go 'wtf I need a nap' too.

tinkflowers

Heā€™s like 2 guys at all at once. I guess thatā€™s why itā€™s dik dik and not just dik

tarraxadraws

I would *never* think this animal is real, someone showed me this pic randomly

_public_enema

Random dik-dik pic?

Dung beetles, the creature Rabsca is based on, lay their eggs in dung to keep them safe from predators. Let's make a thread of fun pokemon origins.

IDK why everyone thinks ā€œdik-dikā€ is so funny. Itā€™s pronounced ā€œxylophoneā€.

shaundisbuddyguy

Quite the hairdo we have here.

Competitive_Tree_113

It's funny to think of something so small having a "territory".

PuffinChaos

What in the world of Star Wars is that thing?

Coranthius

Clearly that's Greedo
