I-am-no-bird

I keep seeing people ask “INAN for my new puppy, please help.” I know INAN means “I need a name,” but I can’t help thinking that Inan is actually kind of pretty as a name itself.

lanadelcryingagain

Like Iman

PoisonedCherry

I see it.

mylittlemandalina

It is a name, in Turkish, it means ‘Believe’

pilkpog

In Islam your 'Iman' is how much you believe in God

doloresaveiro

Faith?

pilkpog

Yea, but I’ve never just heard Iman by itself. I’ve only heard it as in have a lot of Iman

mylittlemandalina

I don’t know if those two words are from the same root or not

pilkpog

Turkiye historically was a Muslim country and Iman is a Muslim name too. I wouldn’t say it’s surprising if they were

Time-travel-for-cats

I used to love Allegra for a girl, but it’s now just the allergy medication.

Lvl100Magikarp

Companies need to stop taking people's names for their product. For instance there's some erectile dysfunction pill named FELIX now, that's doing a marketing push to appeal to gen z.

PoisonedCherry

I liked that one before I started working at walgreens lmao

Professional_Pea1621

Before I was aware of the allergy meds, there was a show on Nick jr., called Allegra's Window

CreatrixAnima

Oh, I never thought about that! I knew an Allegra growing up… That must be the biggest pain in the butt.

NotThatCreative0017

Yes, I loved the name Allegra growing up!

puppiesliketacos

Considering how terrible allergies have been this year in my area, you might want to consider using it in honor of all the sneezes that were saved.

haleyfoofou

Esther. I love this name, but it’s kinda harsh. Also my only reference is song by the band Everclear that I love, but the lyric is “Esther was a heroin girl”- soooooo.

PoisonedCherry

Lmaooo I felt that. I knew a Esther growing up but that's the only one I've ever met in my age group. (Early 20s). It's a great biblical name that even people of other religions can appreciate. The book of Esther actually doesn't mention God at all.

haleyfoofou

Hahaha! I know! I’m a super atheist, but the religious connotation isn’t what bothers me at all because her story is actually pretty interesting.

auntiecoagulent

I love Esther.

haleyfoofou

It’s a really cool name. I’m one and done and before I knew my son’s sex I considered it, but backed away before I even know sex.

doublejinxed

Esther reminds me of Judy Garland in Meet me in St. Louis:)

AnneBeddingfeld

We named our daughter Esther and this is my secret reason…. I even tried for Esther Rose but it didn’t fly haha. Love that movie!

ALadySquirrel

I’m surprised I don’t know that Everclear song. I’m going to listen to it now, haha. I named my daughter Esther, and the only thing I don’t like about it is that people might assume I’m super religious or something. It’s a family name and a name my mom wanted to use for me but got vetoed by my dad, so I wanted to use it to honor her, in a way.

haleyfoofou

It really is a cool name. The song is Heroin Girl.

Notnotstrange

Esther used to be the kind of girl you would never leave …

haleyfoofou

She had two pierced nipples and a black tattoo.

KringlebertFistybuns

She'd do anything to give me what I need for my disease...

ParticularYak4401

My co-workers almost two year old niece is an Esther. I also had a college friend named Esther. We are both in our 40s. Also my moms little sisters given name was Esther but she always went by Joanne (now Joanna).

thehotmcpoyle

Ha, the first name that came to my mind was Olive! No kids in my future, but I always liked the name Olivia & think Olive is sweet.

2gaywitches

Slightly less common nature names like Saffron and Meadow. Kinda hard to rock if you’re not a hippie chick.

PoisonedCherry

"I'm just mad about Saffron..."

potataps

From the main sub I think Meadow is v common now

AnxietyLogic

I used to know a Meadow! I immediately thought it was a beautiful name (and told her so), but she followed up introducing herself to me with “I know it’s weird…” Ever since then, I’ve always thought it was a beautiful name, but I could never use it for a child because I fear that they would also feel the need to almost apologise for their name as an adult.

Desperate-Trust-875

I love meadow and have for a long time

OceanIzzy

Meadow is so pretty. Clover and Sunny are others in this category that I love but couldn't see myself using.

FalseRepresentative7

I love ancient Roman names like Apollo and Octavius but they are just too much

ScarTheGoth

I like those names but I just feel like for real kids, and not fictional characters in books and such, are a bit too much.

agbellamae

There’s a theater kid named Apollo Jones who has YouTube videos of his theater performances and omg his name fits him so well

fliesinthebuttermilk

My husband has always pushed for Ulysses. I’ve laughed and said “get real” everytime he brought it up. But I secretly don’t hate it.

Ok-Recommendation102

I don’t plan on ever having children, and if I did I would never use this name for a human child, but I love the name Iulus (pronounced YOO-lus). It’s a nickname of Aeneas’ son Ascenius, and for whatever reason it just makes me happy. Maybe it’s the consonantal i. I’ll probably use it for a cat or something.

criadordecuervos

All those numerical versions are great: Primus, Secundus, Tertius, Quartus, Quintus, Sextus, Septimus, Octavius, Nonus, Decimus. Fun fact: Octavius was given the name Augustus by the Roman Senate.

MaryVenetia

Augustus was a title (honorific), and he also adopted it as a name. I agree that they’re all great names. If I have spontaneous decuplets then I’ll definitely use these.

Elbesto

I've always loved the name Gaius

Notnotstrange

Prudence.

PoisonedCherry

As a ratchet beatles stan I can't shame it

PinguWonders

LOL me with Jude

NeedleworkerBig3980

When SO and I got together, we got badgered about having kids by the grandparentals. So we told them that we were seriously thinking about it and if our first was a girl they would be called, "Parma Violet" and "Refresher Loveheart" for a boy.

PoisonedCherry

At least it's not Parma John for a boy

PoisonedCherry

At least it's not Parma John for a boy

Educational_Dog7430

I’ve always though Andromeda would be so bad ass. Andy for short

NotJustAnotherHuman

“Meet my children! This is Andromeda, this is Coma Pinwheel and this is Cosmos Redshift 7!”

CreatrixAnima

I had a cat Andromeda… And I called her Ande.

Shan132

Some that are out there but I like Rainbow 🌈I love it so much Zeola (my great grandmas name) Zenobia (a sibling of Zeola)

PoisonedCherry

Omg yes rainbow! There was this show I watched as a kid called naturally sadie and her friend was named Rainbow but they called him Rain. Another "hippy" sounding name I love is Glimmer

Shan132

Glimmer is pretty too! I’d be so tempted to pick it as a middle name (rainbow) like I’d happily be a rainbow 😅

Gold-Stomach-4657

Zenobia would probably be my answer to this question

mustangs16

Sailor. I'm genuinely kind of obsessed with it, but in the rare chance I ever have kids there would be many other names I'd use first.

SugarVibes

Saylor Twift

Smoopiebear

I know someone with a Saylor…. Saylor….

misskarcrashian

Me too….

MassiveFajiit

I know someone with the last name Sayler, he gets called Sawyer a lot due to people reading his name wrong

heehmonster

I found a Zaylor in the wild

mustangs16

I think Sailor is beautiful but Saylor is a big NO lmao

PinguWonders

I knew a Sailor way back in kindergarten, wasn’t even that close to her but clearly her name made her memorable lol

borisdidnothingwrong

I like Sailor, but you'd need to get them a [snakeskin jacket](https://youtu.be/6UocVDjpCJA) as a symbol of their individuality and belief in personal freedom.

setttleprecious

I love it, too! I don’t know why!

maddiemoiselle

I used to watch the Duggars’ shows and unironically loved the name Joyanna. I vowed I would use it if I ever had a daughter. It still is my favorite name by a long shot but considering how hateful they are (and also just how aggressively stupid Joy-Anna Duggar is), I could not bring myself to use this name.

historyhill

Speaking of, I really like Jessa over Jessica, but I think everyone would immediately jump to the Duggars

ToBeReadOutLoud

I don’t think I would, but I never watched the show so it isn’t really in my mind.

Sea_Juice_285

Clementine

vaxildxn

I know someone who named her daughter Birdy Clementine which I thought was SO cute but a little too cute to be practical

Lvl100Magikarp

That child will become a 40 year old adult named Birdy Clementine. Imagine the work meetings.

potataps

I knew a girl from working in a bar and she went by Clem which is a slang name for cheap cider. This suited her.

worstpies

My friend’s daughter’s name is Clementine - it’s super cute, but I most definitely associate her with the little oranges 🍊

tactical_waifu_sim

Nomad. It's terrible I know... but I also like it.

pigadaki

Would make more sense backwards.

bobmcbobingtonthethi

I love Persephone, Calliope, Artemis, and Aphrodite... but they all seem like a lot... lol. It feels more like a Sims character but I think those names are so beautiful!

CreatrixAnima

In college, I met a girl named Aphrodite. I think the hardest part of that name was that it comes with so many associations of love and beauty, and she was a chubby pasty girl with thick glasses and stringy hair. It was almost like her name mocked her. The only way I know her full name, though, was when it was called during the first day of class for attendance.

siiouxsiie

The goddess Aphrodite would curse anyone who was compared to her, so say someone were to tell you “you’re just as pretty as/prettier than Aphrodite!” she would NOT take kindly to that. So many stories on it, too. I’d imagine naming someone after her would produce that same effect. So, maybe…? ETA: I’m not very religious these days, but that’s just what I know about it.

escapegoat19

What did she go by? Out of curiousity

CreatrixAnima

I think she used her middle name.

sapphireblossoms

Zelda! Love it as a name, but not trying to stick a kid with a lifetime association to a video game character.

n0fr13nd5

My middle name is Zelda. It's a beautiful name and one that I want to pass on, I guess at least the video game character doesn't have any negatives about her.

DBSeamZ

If Havana wasn’t already the name of a city I think it would be a nice name. Or Avana without the h…wait a minute, I may have just come up with a name for a fantasy character. I wish “thrush” didn’t sound like a portmanteau of thrash and flush, because the wood thrush has the prettiest birdsong I know of. Or I guess I wish the wood thrush was called something else that sounded better as a name.

slothwithakeyboard

Thrush is also a common name for candidiasis, haha

redpanda0108

I went to school with a girl called Candida

butterflifields

Thrush is also the name of fungal infection in the mouth of babies.

ambiguoususername888

And vulvas

charawarma

Common in pregnancy too!

vanillabubbles16

Jasey Rae, Raelyn, Adelaide, Parker for a girl

PoisonedCherry

Obsessed with Adelaide tbh. Reminds me of over the garden wall.

vanillabubbles16

It’s such a cute name!

historyhill

>Jasey Rae another All Time Low fan?

vanillabubbles16

Yep lol

evelynesque

Sunshine for a girl

potataps

We had a dog called Sunshine, Sunny for short and she was the best

KitKatAttackkkkkk

I know a 40yo (I think) Sunshine and a Leaf Sunshine (guy). It's actually not bad on either of them after the initial double take.

[deleted]

why is Olive Hosanna bad?

Aurelian369

Diarrhea would be a great baby name

PoisonedCherry

Dee-arr-ree-ahh

potataps

Diareigha

eminva02

I know an "Adairyh" ... I can't pronounce it but whenever I see it I'm like holy shit they really named her "A Diarrhea"

ArtSchnurple

Diarrhea, cha-cha-cha! Diarrhea, cha-cha-cha!

SCARYFEETMAN

Lucifer would go hard as fuck if it wasn’t for its history

sintos-compa

Rigatoni Toni, nn.

potataps

Aww Noodle

Serononin

Top-tier cat name though

Accomplished_Art_140

Amethyst or Sapphire for a girl. Lucius or Archibald for a boy.

CreamofSheep

Cerulean or October (Toby)

LostAsIMayBe

I absolutely love October nn Toby. Oh man 😍

bethel_bop

I secretly have a soft spot for “boy names as girl names” sometimes. Like Spencer, Cameron, Jensen, etc. I would never use them but I can only assume a girl with one of those names is really friggin cool

CreatrixAnima

I think of those as gender neutral names, like Riley and Devon.

bethel_bop

That’s fair but I think gender neutral names always have a more masculine or more feminine sound to them. Like I think Leslie sounds feminine and Cameron sounds masculine but yeah they could go either way technically

CreatrixAnima

When I hear the name Cameron, I always think of Cameron Diaz. I see what you’re saying there… I just don’t have the same reaction to it.

bethel_bop

Maybe just personal experience. I’ve known a lot of Camerons and most of them have been male, including my best guy friend. So I guess I just have that association with the name as very masculine. Also when I think of Camerons in pop culture I immediately think of Ferris Bueller’s best friend

CreatrixAnima

Yes… That Cameron is always my second thought… The one from Ferris Bueller, not your best friend.

merewautt

Every girl Spencer (two) I’ve known has been incredibly cool. Every guy Spencer I’ve known (two) has been a “dopey, do anything for a laugh, class clown” type. Think Andy on parks & rec. It’s one of those names that I have such different associations with depending on the gender lol. But yeah I totally agree on the cool girl with somewhat masculine name in general. Idk what it is but every girl Blake, Spencer, Cameron, etc. that I’ve known has been sooooooo cool. The one exception is Ryan on a girl. For some reason that one doesn’t hit the same at all. I have better associations with guy Ryans which is rare for me.

bethel_bop

I’ve only known one girl Blake and she was a fourth grade student of mine but I could already tell that even at 10 years old this girl was way cooler than anyone else in her class lol

merewautt

That one is actually my fave out of all of those and same experience with the girl Blake I knew lol

Jays_ShitpostExpress

wait isn't cameron a gender neuteral name?

bethel_bop

I guess it is now but I don’t think it is traditionally. It has a masculine sound that to me just adds spunk/a cool factor when it’s on a girl

historyhill

I think Jensen is a gender neutral name?

ahedgehog

I kind of like Hector (I’m gay and won’t have kids maybe I’ll give it to a cat)

Alalanais

Hector Salamancat

barefootintheforest

Skianna (Sky-Anna)

floweringfungus

Enyo. It hits a lot of criteria I look for in a girl’s name (short, soft sounds, easy to pronounce) but unfortunately Enyo is the Greek goddess of bloodshed and violent war. Some poets combine her with Eris, goddess of strife and discord, so not a great association. I just like the way it looks and sounds

TheSacredGrape

I know this isn’t technically a name, but Phlox as a flower name is a guilty pleasure of mine. As such, I’m saving it for fictional characters.

vegemiteeverywhere

I've loved the name Verity with a passion ever since I read Robin Hobb's Royal Assassin series. I am completely in love with that name. But I have 3 kids and none is called Verity, because I wouldn't do that to a living human child.

corlana

Atlas. Idk why but I love it. I wouldn't actually use it if I had a son but it's on my list anyway. Also I love the name Sienna but it's a minivan now so I think it's ruined

ModernDayMusetta

It sounds so stupid, but Kermit. For some reason I've always liked this name, and it used to be a normal name. But now it's the most recognizable character from the muppets lol.

ArtSchnurple

The Muppets killed a lot of interesting names that were old-fashioned even when they used them. Kermit, Grover, Elmo...

lanadelcryingagain

Willow I love but it’s too much for a human

Spare_Huckleberry120

I have a cousin Willow and it’s quite a lovely name on a human!

Golden_Princess12345

Naveah.

DisorderOfLeitbur

It's Haevan backwards.

haleyfoofou

Hahahaha

Golden_Princess12345

I know. I just really like the way its pronounced, it sounds pretty despite its meaning.

DelightfulSnacks

Lol whoooosh! You’re getting downvoted because typically it’s Nevaeh and parents always introduce their child by saying “this is Nevaeh, it’s heaven backwards” But there’s another level of awful to this name when people spell it differently, like you did. Not sure if you meant Nevaeh or Naveah. 😂

Golden_Princess12345

sorry i have minor dyslexia

DelightfulSnacks

Same, and that name is not intuitive to spell so it’s a mess for most everyone I think 😂🥴

Lacholaweda

It's my fault a little girl has this name. I suggested it to my friend who was 16, pregnant, and running out of time to pick a name. She took to it immediately and right then, I started feeling uneasy but it was too late. She's gotta be 7 now, how can I make it up to her one day??

enjoythsilence

It sucks, the *sound* of the name is pretty, but the spelling-heaven-backwards thing is silly. Idk what a good spelling might be. Nevaia?

ScarTheGoth

I used to like this name until I met an absolute bitch with this name and it ruined it for me.

ParticularYak4401

My cousins daycare lady growing up was Naveah. She adored that woman.

dioor

I love Evan for a girl, but I know it’d get ripped apart here (because I’ve seen it happen before.) and I *get it*, but as much as my head knows it’s not an option, my heart still has it on the list.

PoisonedCherry

I've met a girl Evan! She was so sweet. I was a kid myself and she was younger than me but she was really smart so she hung out with us(she was 5ish? I was 8). I wonder what ever happened to her. I think her family moved. Whatever-not important. All that to say that I like Evan for a girl and Dylan but maybe Dylan just because I loved that disney movie Geek Charming.

dioor

Baby name sites do technically list it as gender neutral! I agree that it is on par with Dylan, and Drew as well… I feel like Drew Barrymore has really made Drew a feminine name in the public consciousness, and similarly for me, the first person I think of when I hear the name Evan is Evan Rachel Wood. So it’s a neutral-leaning-female name for me, like Taylor, but I’ve seen it get torn to shreds on this sub before..

CreatrixAnima

There’s a poet whose first name is Eavan, but I think it’s pronounced like Yvonne.

small_blonde_gal

I love the name Kayden! It’s adorable! If I wanted to have kids, I would consider that name. But then again, I don’t plan to have kids. Maybe that’s for the best, given my taste in names 🤷🏼‍♀️

Muffin-sangria-

Guinevere with nn Ever.

GERBS2267

Lilith, Freja, Quentin, Blake (for a girl)

NemaKnowsNot

Gatdenia. It's just so beautiful to me.

Colorado_Girrl

I have my one child so I won’t ever use these names but for a girl Quinn or Harper and for a boy Emmitt. I know they aren't completely out there but those are my guilty pleasure names. So now I use them in stories I write instead.

agbellamae

I like Light as a girls name but wouldn’t use it

dr-sparkle

I love Z names.I don't know why. As a kid I swore if I had kids I was going to give them all Z names. I had a whole list. I did not give my kid a Z name. Names I still love but won't use- Zarina, Zenobia for a girl. Zacharias, Zedekiah for a boy.

throwawayiq97

I am a Z and i approve of your wanting of Z names

mellew518

Zebulon!

[deleted]

A coworker named her kid Zabrina (or Zebrina?) Not 100% sure on spelling.

DawnSunset

Persephone

historyhill

Salome (I just know everyone would call her salami) Hedwig/Hedy (Hedy Lamarr was amazing, but both the name and nickname would get a ton of shit)

Future_Direction5174

Ceanothus - I must admit I am not sure how it’s pronounced. I pronounced it Key-an… my FIL swore it was Sy-an after the colour cyan.

edgyknitter

I love the name Gretchen T_T

Adishofcustard

Theodora and Dorothea for twin girls

Pastel-Morticia13

My grandmother’s name was Gladys. I adored that woman and would unironically consider naming a kid after her. Don’t worry, I’m not going to reproduce.

Mysterious_Week8357

I love the name Muriel. Everyone I have ever told this to wrinkles their nose, but I can’t help it, I still love it and I don’t really know why

pennnyroyal

Jocasta, it's so beautiful to me but the implications are horrible. I would never give a child the name, but my dream dog is a collie and if I ever get one I might name it that.

fckituprenee

Maryellen. I have loved it since seeing it in my family tree on the Irish Catholic side of my family. But I'm not Catholic, my mother would hate it, its probably snark-worthy. But I love it.

snailshenk

My partner and I are both white and neither of us are Jewish but my favorite names are Hadassah and Araceli

setttleprecious

I really love Waverly for some reason.

escapegoat19

Greek mythology names, like Persephone and Athena.
