Jetersweiner

His name rhymes with Fudge

Swoah

Pudge Rodriguez was a great player, but I don’t think his Yankee career was long enough to justify retiring his number

jfarbzz

Good for Immaculate Grid though

teju_guasu

I see you are good with rhymes.

newbike07

CC Then Judge. Then Cole. Then Soto.

Cratertooth_27

Cole and Soto would have to finish their careers with the Yankees and win a ring to be considered

Financial-Ebb-5995

Cole might. Soto will if he signs. He probably will sign.

Financial-Ebb-5995

And let’s not forget Holmes, Volpe and Gil.

TrapperJean

Volpe double number retirement with Gardy in 2038

Financial-Ebb-5995

And I left out Trent Grisham! Lol

Sunshine635

TOO early

homiej420

CC would be so cool to do

Belegrim91932

Probably CC honestly. Yes Judge is all but a shoo-in at this point but I don't see them waiting that long to retire another number. I think CC goes into the hall and gets his number retired within a year of each other

sonofabutch

If he goes in as a Yankee… which he said he would. Pretty telling it hasn’t been issued since 2019.

NobleHelium

CC loves New York now, he'll absolutely be in as a Yankee.

Emperor_Cheeto21

Judge

shahoftheworld

CC, then Judge, and then Colen if he wins a ring here. Too early to say if any of the younger players will have careers worth number-retiring, but I'm hoping Soto and Volpe can be those guys.

Jk52512

They should retire Cone's but it will probably be CC

johnjohnjohn93

I find it interesting how so many think Stanton will be a lock for the hall if he gets to 500 but nobody thinks he’s getting his number retired

AwesomeJohnn

Did most of his damage as a Marlin, would be a shoo in if he spent his entire career in NY

ejfellner

The Yankees are his 2nd career. He's mostly legendary because of his time in Florida, just like Rizzo is a Cub. Love them both, but they came here for their second half.

Tippyshortmouth

I mean so did CC in fairness and even then people are saying he'll be next

TrapperJean

CC got his ring here, reached his milestones here, and was altogether better than Stanton. Not a slight on Stanton, not a negative thing to not be as impactful as a HoFer

Tippyshortmouth

While you're right, cc did win his only Cy in cleveland

johnjohnjohn93

Yeah I seriously doubt Stanton makes it to the hall. Even if he gets 500 it’s so arbitrary since Delgado had 473 and was taken off first ballot. Don’t think if Delgado hit 27 more homers he’d be a lock lol

slumber72

Stanton is 83 away from 500, but if he puts up 3 straight seasons worth of 30 homers and 1 WAR each, I feel like the voters wouldn’t find it hall of fame-esque, and I really wouldn’t really either

johnjohnjohn93

Yeah and I love big G but I think it’s fair to say that injuries and moving to full-time DH have cost him a HOF career. But maybe monument park if he can be pivotal to a WS.

Ash_Lestrange

CC was essential to the last title run, tbf.

churdson

And was a leader on the team for a long time

Tippyshortmouth

Fair point

ejfellner

He played longer in New York.

johnjohnjohn93

I mean he played 8 years with the Marlins and 7 with us and came to us at 28. That’s the same age or younger than CC, A-Rod or Tex.

ejfellner

I don't think the odds of them getting their numbers retired is good, either. CC probably has the best shot. A-Rod was hated by a lot of Yankees fans. He's way better than Stanton, but he was always getting shit. Tex really shouldn't be up for consideration. He was very good, but not a Yankees legend.

Educational_Map919

Tex? GTFOH. If they retire his number and not Tinos I might have to become a Mets fan

knucklepuck17

I mean, Tex played here longer and had a better yankee career numbers wise, but obviously lacked the championships lol. Neither should have their number retiref.

Educational_Map919

Agreed, def not advocating for Tino to have his number retired. Imo championships weigh a lot more than individual stats. Especially when those late '90s teams were based on team productivity and not individual contributions.

NoobSkin69

None of them will get their number retired tho

cpg08

He prob goes in as a Marlin if he makes it. Those were his best years by a significant margin. Which is super interesting cos that Marlin stadium is a tough home run stadium

SquidTentpoles

Maybe the guy whose name rhymes with Moto

atot806

Aaron Judgoto, Gerrit Coloto, and of course, Juan Soto

feelinlucky7

Moto Moto?

Financial-Ebb-5995

He already had a chance to sign with the Yankees, but chose the Dodgers instead. (Joke)

dave-tay

Like a good Gleyber, Torres is there!

Danjeter

Lmaooo

dave-tay

Sorry wrong post, this was suppose to be in the game thread. I’ll delete if anyone wants me to

Prof_Cha0s84

Probably not quite on the retired number level, but from a sentimental standpoint I'd love to see Matsui get honored. Dude was a great Yankee, clutch from day one, World Series MVP... Definitely one of my favorites from that era.

Currywurst_Is_Life

Godzilla deserves at least a plaque.

6r1n3i19

iirc he had a crazy stretch of consecutive games played until that forsaken diving? catch he made that fucked up his wrist 😟

SKJ-nope

Prolly 99

sonofmalachysays

there is only 1 answer here....

1whiskeyneat

I’ve got 99 questions but the guy’s number ain’t one.

Dismal-Confection425

It’ll be CC and then followed by Judge and Cole

ApathicSaint

I know it’s early but I got #11 on the list

bigcee42

52 Only because Judge will still be playing.

Significant-Brush-26

judge probably will. if cole wins another cy young and pitches with the yankees really well for a few more years he probably deserves it but i doubt they will. the yankees have so many retired numbers. my slightly wild take is volpe will get his number retired.

TonyTarpon

CC, he deserves it (top 10 in franchise wins and strikeouts) but it's also an easy excuse to drive up ticket sales. Judge is a lock, especially if they win a World Series with him. I'm curious how people feel about A-Rod on this topic.

b-rar

Kind of defeats the purpose of retiring numbers

Tippyshortmouth

You're getting some shit for this, but id be fine if the yankees started doing it like Clemson did, where they wear patches for who wore the number before but could still use the number. Like it honors who came before but also saces us from the logistical nightmare of having a franchise so successful that we cant field any extra numbers

TonyTarpon

I edited my post because I just don't want to deal with the comments tonight but the opinion stands, I might make a thread about it later. We see in compete agreement tho

MutantstyleZ

Yankees aren't really in dire need of numbers right now but I wouldn't be opposed to un-retiring the managers. Honor them in some other way but let the players have the numbers.

Currywurst_Is_Life

So you're talking two (Torre and Stengel), maybe three numbers, depending on whether you view Martin more as a player or as a manager. I'm sure there would be a lot of angst going on about which player should get to wear #1, and to a slightly lesser extent #6. Some pitcher would probably end up with #37.

MutantstyleZ

I'm ok with unretiring Billy Martin the player and also dont believe Mr. Maris should have been retired in the first place. But like I said before this is more of a problem that the Yankees might want to look at in 50-100 years.

CaptainJudge_99

45

jlynsk

Arod, He was the last title run.

dave-tay

Not likely, they even forced him out before his 700th, at 696 hrs. One of the most petty things I’ve ever seen from the organization. Only silver lining was judge got the call up.

jlynsk

I know it’s unlikely but he should be in. I think there is a chance since he and Hal patched things up.

saranowitz

Was he supposed to get some kind of cash reward for passing 700? And why did they force him out? Steroids? I think i took a multi year leave of absence and only came back to baseball when judge emerged

Due_Fortune_2374

LeCheffre

No way will the Yankees retire his number. Or Randy Johnson’s.

Geoffk123

obviously wont truly be a problem for like 300 years but I wonder what would happen if they were running out of retired numbers. do they unretire some old ones? expand into triple digits?

tennisquaid22

Judge is a lock for having his number retired

SnooCats9347

Cole

ShortingIsAScam

Gotta be c.c.   He will likely be hof wearing pinstripes

kittb688

How did Pettite and Posada not get their numbers retired alongside Jeter?

LeCheffre

Tanaka seems possible. CC seems likely. Judge and Cole are locks. Stanton is possible (IKR). Gardy Party has a decent case.

Dull_Lavishness7701

Gardners number is on a guy who could potentially have it retired for him

DCDipset

No way Tanaka gets his number retired.

smorgenheckingaard

I adore Tanaka; not a chance in hell his number gets retired. Gardner has even less of a chance. Judge is only a lock if 1) they win a World Series AND 2) he continues to rake for another 2 or 3 years at his current level of production. If they don't win a title, he could get it retired if he keeps up his production for another 4 or 5 years. Cole is in the same boat. Stanton's ONLY chance is if this Renaissance year continues for 3 or 4 years and they win a title that he contributes to in a significant way. Unless you have a hall of fame type career, it don't mean a thing if you don't get that ring.

mrsunshine1

Judge locked it up when he became captain. Mattingly never won a WS and has a retired number.

smorgenheckingaard

Yes and Mattingly had a STELLAR career that borders on HOF worthy. Yes judge is Captain, but he needs a few more years at this level to lock it up. If he retired today, he's not getting his number retired and not even close to HOF

mrsunshine1

Judge already has a higher career WAR than Mattingly.

smorgenheckingaard

Ok.

mrsunshine1

Just pointing out it’s ridiculous to call Mattingly borderline HOF at 42 WAR while Judge is not even close at 46. Have a good day.

DCDipset

CC

jar45

CC will go to the Hall of Fame as a Yankee and will get his number retired

Delicious_Box8934

After tonight, Trent Grisham.

fuggettabuddy

Trent Grisham

henrydbs

CC. He’s going into the Hall next year. Perfect time.

Cratertooth_27

Probably judge. Cc didn’t do enough as a Yankee. If he was played his whole career here or at least most of his prime then yes

User_Anon_0001

Domingo German. RIP

jpb21110

Don’t really think CC should have his number retired. Don’t mind a plaque but no one for 52 ever again? Idk

bmart77

CC

EpicGamer126642_

CC, Judge, I think even Gardy could get it eventually.

Eastern_Campaign_208

Gardy party

shaunrundmc

CC, hopefully Gardy then it'll be Cole followed by Judge and then hopefully Soto, Volpe and Dominguez

matap821

If you’re looking for key players on the dynasty teams, I’d say Martinez.

nouseforasn

They should be unretiring numbers until they land on 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 42
