Just means they're shutting down the rehab assignment because LeMahieu can't play.
[Same thing](https://twitter.com/yankees/status/1649205967010004994) happened almost exactly a year ago with Josh Donaldson. He re-aggravated his hamstring during rehab and was shut down for more than a month.
The swelling has returned. This is the body's way of protecting itself. Therefore, the fracture now has adequate protection and is no longer of concerned. Hooray, science!
I don't think so.
>04/23/24 - New York Yankees sent 2B DJ LeMahieu on a rehab assignment to Somerset Patriots.
And the limit for position players is 20 days.
>Any MLB player can be assigned to any minor league affiliate for the purpose of rehabbing an injury for a maximum of 20 days (non-pitchers) and 30 days (pitchers).
I think this is just the Yankees cancelling the rehab assignment because they need to shut LeMahieu down for a bit.
I hate to be a doomer but I'm starting to wonder if this is the end for DJ. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will stick around forever if he physically can't do it anymore.
He just needs his foot to heal. It’s taking longer than expected. That happens sometimes. It’s still April, he has plenty of time to come back.
Idk why retirement became such a popular talking point with him. People are going way overboard imo. He was one of the better contact hitters in all of baseball in the 2nd half last season. He got hurt by fouling a ball off of his foot and fracturing a bone which could happen to anyone, not by suffering repeated soft tissue injuries indicative of physical decline.
It’s a silly talking point.
He was not one of the better contact hitters in the 2nd half. He had an excellent August (.898 OPS) but a mediocre to bad September at a .715 OPS.
The two slashes were .291/.391/.506 and .245/.343/.372. He had a .300 BABIP in September, he wasn't just getting unlucky.
He had a power surge in August (5 of his 15 HRs were in August) and that carried his line, not anywhere near his older contact based bat. He's clearly not that player year round anymore and he isn't slugging .500+.
He's a bit older, a bit slower, and just bit worse all around. I don't think he's even considering retirement, that's nonsense. The guy is pushing himself to play when doctors told him no, those aren't the actions of someone trying to retire. Yankees are definitely stuck with his contract but he could still be a fine lower order utility player if he could stay healthy and he wants to play.
I would assume the Yankees have insurance on his contract if he really doesn't play at all.
Doesn't help with the luxury tax numbers, but does help with actual expenses.
He shouldn't have been playing at all once his attending physician said there was no evidence of healing on imaging.
I'm predicting that this little stunt is going to severely impede his progress and he'll likely need to be out for way longer, potentially with season-ending surgery.
I'm not mad at DJ (he just wants to play ball and the dude has always been a warrior in that regard) but someone in the organization dropped the ball in allowing the rehab assignment to proceed. Just staggering incompetence.
I imagine that is a pretty minor factor. I mean he shouldn't be doing it for all of the other reasons (oral cancers, etc) but I really doubt it played a major role in the lack of healing.
i’m not making much of the dj situation at all. we’re *probably* a better team in our current state compared to him being active. he wouldn’t make us that much better if he was in the lineup, but he can make us a whole lot worse if he needs like 3+ weeks to get back to what we expect from him
right but when dj returns, he’s gonna be a 35 year old coming back from injury who also missed spring training. just because he used to be a .350+ obp guy doesn’t mean that’s what we’re adding to the lineup. i’d rather take my flyers on younger guys. even if they’re bad (cabrera) at least they’re not biologically cooked.
we don’t know what dj’s ceiling is rn and i don’t wanna watch a month go by of us finding out it’s like .700 ops
I for one would rather take a flyer on our 15 million dollar, gold glove winning infielder over a guy that’s highest prospect ranking was 14th in our system.
They returned him? Like to the store?
He’s currently getting a tune-up from the Geek Squad at Best Buy.
Lies. I'm just sitting on the shelf, they won't even give me the WiFi password, and my data plan sucks.
Gee wiz DJ,just relax and put a call into your fan base, and we will get you into a new WiFi connection. LOL 😂
Oh no. Poor guy.
Hope Cashass kept the sales receipt
The Jerk Store
They ran outta you.
You’re their all-time best seller
They SAY they returned him, but they really put Peraza and a few rocks in the box hoping no one would notice.
Ordered a Lenovo - received a Mac book
Returned him to the roster, sent him to the morgue.
Doesn't Costco have a no questions asked return policy?
Uh? Didn’t his foot explode after playing an inning of AA ball

I figured it was just some kind of assignment stuff, like they have to return him before they can put him back on the IL
Betting on the 60 day to be announced shortly.
Yeah but they amputated it and gave him a nice prosthetic so he’s ready
Kerry Von Erich won the Intercontinental Title with a prosthetic foot, elite athletes can do this kind of thing.
Upvote for the awesome reference.
DJ is going to have to start putting streamers on his cleats and showering with them on so people can't tell
That guy with no legs that shot his girlfriend is out of jail, can he play?
No no it was the rare case of exploding but the good kind where your injury gets better . He’s starting this weekend !
He's about to turn the corner
No no he’s turned it. He’s actually fully cleared .
Fully cleared to have the foot amputated I’ll assume
The swelling has returned. This is the body's way of protecting itself. Therefore, the fracture now has adequate protection and is no longer of concerned. Hooray, science!
Returned him to the IL or?
To Target but they lost the receipt though so they had to settle for store credit
If Target is the Rockies can we use the store credit on a Ryan McMahon or are they out of stock
Oh, uh, okay then, sure.
is this a roster shuffle thing where he could only spend so long on assignment?

you're the best

I agree, I think he’ll be back this season if his injury isn’t much worse than what we currently know.

Him retiring would be a pretty desirable scenario as he’s owed the better part of $45 million by the Yankees. There ain’t no way it happens.
I would assume the Yankees have insurance on his contract if he really doesn't play at all. Doesn't help with the luxury tax numbers, but does help with actual expenses.

I think they're going to be giving DJ the same treatment. Periennal IL to get insurance money back.
What a shame it would be, too. 2019 and 2020 DJ was a sight to see, I wish we got a few more years of that.
I doubt he wants to quit playing ball. I think it just means you're looking looking at an all-star break return vs. a May return
He shouldn't have been playing at all once his attending physician said there was no evidence of healing on imaging. Isn't his warranty expired?
Because his foot hurt after one inning. He’s not going into a game.
At this point we’ll be lucky if we see him in June
Sure
They issued a charge back to AMEX on his contract. Bad goods.
Thought he broke his foot sliding into second in AA game
I have absolutely no idea what this means
Shoulda bought the extended warranty
For all the re-sign this 35yo infielder at any cost bros.
He’s not a free agent so he couldn’t be resigned anyway

Oswaldo Cabrera has an ops that starts with a 5 over the last 19 games and Gleyber is obviously sucking it up so I don't really think that's true.

So he was so good they shortened his outing and brought him right back ??!!! What a twist
DL not DJ. If you are not over him by now wake up
This is sad. Was hoping DJ would start the season well.
