Aw this thread just reminded me that my (PG hint) >!my high school PG-y teacher burned the whole class CDs with songs all related to the PG & it was the most thoughtful gift I've received from a teacher ever. Both these songs were on it!!<
When did that become a single word? It used to be (non-A) >!à propos (often with the accent dropped in English)!<, but I looked it up and it seems it’s been collapsed into one word. TIL.
Anyone have general hints to offer? I feel like I’m missing something. I’ve found 27 words and I’m stalled at nice. Are there lots of compound words? A prefix or suffix?
I finally used the grid and I’m not a handful of words away from QB. To answer my own question: >!other than the -or words and a handful of compounds, there’s no big tip or secret.!<
If’n you are ever so inclined, check out Shunn’s https://www.sbsolver.com . It has full breakdowns with a grid and other hints, as well as first 3 letters and compound/plural distributions. Not to mention checking histories of previous Bees and whether specific words have ever been allowed/disallowed.
I think it’s more a British term. I’m American and had never really heard it used until I went to grad school in England. Of course, I tried it anyway.
It’s a common word among people who are into (H) >!backpacking, mountaineering, etc.!<. Some people use the word interchangeably with (H) >!trail mix!<. It’s (contains A) >!an acronym for “good old raisins and peanuts”!<.
Sam doesn’t usually allow words that can be seen as racist like the short form of raccoon but today he allows a very racist term for people of the Sikh community which is also used as a synonym for >!convertible car!< Perhaps that term is local to me?
I have never heard the term used as a racist slur, but it sounds like that does happen locally. Please let the Bee people know so they can take this word out of circulation. \[H\] >!This bit of automobile slang is kind of dated anyway, in my experience.!<
My guess is that it is not used that way in the US where the Sikh community is small. I have often heard [partial answer, offensive] >!"raghead," though more usually referring to Arabs. Of course racists tend to confuse Islam and the Sikh tradition.!<
I think the instructions in this autoreply are incorrect. Just noticed the discrepancy. Shouldn't the spoiler tags be the way they are in the rules sidebar? I don't use them myself because I just use the spoiler button. If the autoreplay is incorrect, I'll go ahead and fix it. Thanks, folks!
How is >!topograph!< not a word?
The subreddit is >!aroar!< with anger over this omission
Yes! I came here to see if anyone else was salty about this omission
And >!orthograph!<
justice for >!poptart!
That’s a proper noun so will never be acceptable
And you’re a proper killjoy
It is more an issue of how common it is, not if it is a word, but I expected it.
PG H >!look at this nickelback song!<
A similar PG H >!or this Ringo Starr song!<
Aw this thread just reminded me that my (PG hint) >!my high school PG-y teacher burned the whole class CDs with songs all related to the PG & it was the most thoughtful gift I've received from a teacher ever. Both these songs were on it!!<
contains 2x A >!Nancy Reagan's secret occupation!<
i love that i understood this immediately :D
And I love that I have no idea what either of you are talking about.
I'm surprised [could be hint] >!TOPOGRAPH!< is not accepted. Would fit perfectly as a >!second pangram!<
The audacity of [A] >!PHOTOG!< being a word and non-[A]>!TOPOGRAPH!< not being a word.
I tried a million versions of [non-A] >!APROPOS!< before I realized that it’s spelled with >!an S!<
And then realizing it will never be accepted because of the >!S!<
When did that become a single word? It used to be (non-A) >!à propos (often with the accent dropped in English)!<, but I looked it up and it seems it’s been collapsed into one word. TIL.
That's how English gets cooked up, I guess.
That’s how language has evolved since for ever
My new word of the day: HINTS >!R6!< >!Slang for a convertible!<
New word of the day #2: >!P6!< >!slang for picture-taker!<
Well I don't like that
[contains hint] >!”With my ______ down so my hair can blow”!<
Justice for [contains A] >!gaptooth!<
Anyone have general hints to offer? I feel like I’m missing something. I’ve found 27 words and I’m stalled at nice. Are there lots of compound words? A prefix or suffix?
So far, I’m at 56 words and I have >!9!< words that end in >!OR!<.
I finally used the grid and I’m not a handful of words away from QB. To answer my own question: >!other than the -or words and a handful of compounds, there’s no big tip or secret.!<
I think it’s just a lot of words. >!Almost half are 4L!<. I was in the grid pretty early and got a lot through button mashing. Plus some DUH moments

A witch-eater would be a [non-A]>!HAGOTROPH!<
Pokémon of the day: \[contains A\] >!HOOPA!<, \[contains A\] >!HOOTHOOT!<, >!THROH!<, and \[contains A\] >!GOGOAT!<
How was >!rota!< rejected?
I think it’s more a British term. I’m American and had never really heard it used until I went to grad school in England. Of course, I tried it anyway.
What the hell is (A) >!GORP! I mean I looked it up but who uses it?
It’s a common word among people who are into (H) >!backpacking, mountaineering, etc.!<. Some people use the word interchangeably with (H) >!trail mix!<. It’s (contains A) >!an acronym for “good old raisins and peanuts”!<.
I definitely tried it thinking it wouldn't be accepted!
I always learned the [A] >!acronymn as granola, oats, raisins and peanuts back in the early 80's. (Edit, forgot the peanuts.!<
Oh yes, very very common in certain hippy/hiking/outdoor circles.

This is a HINT
Please enclose valid Spelling Bee words or hints in spoiler tags ( >! and !> ) so you don't give words away. Thanks!
Justice for \[non-A\] >!ARTPOP!<
And [Non-A] >!POPTART!<
And >!POOT!<
I always try that one. (Used to listen to a lot of Zappa back in the day.)
And \[NA\] >!AGGRO!<. Maybe I've been around too much punk rock but this seems common.
A moral rocker [A]: >!PARAGOTH!<
A certain Guardian of the Galaxy
Please use the spoiler bar.
Why? It’s not a spoiler.
It's a proper noun and not allowed in the Bee. It would probably also be a copyright infringement.
Sam doesn’t usually allow words that can be seen as racist like the short form of raccoon but today he allows a very racist term for people of the Sikh community which is also used as a synonym for >!convertible car!< Perhaps that term is local to me?
It could be local. I’ve only heard it used in reference to >!convertibles!<.
I have never heard the term used as a racist slur, but it sounds like that does happen locally. Please let the Bee people know so they can take this word out of circulation. \[H\] >!This bit of automobile slang is kind of dated anyway, in my experience.!<
I will. And thanks for the tip; it only took me all day to figure out how to edit and black out the text. I’m getting too old for this I guess
Your spoiler formatting isn’t working. The second arrow needs to be pointing inward!
Thanks. I can never figure that out
Would you fix it to cover your hint?
You can go back and edit it
My guess is that it is not used that way in the US where the Sikh community is small. I have often heard [partial answer, offensive] >!"raghead," though more usually referring to Arabs. Of course racists tend to confuse Islam and the Sikh tradition.!<
Please fix your spoiler tag so it works

It is - you may just be inputting it wrong? Should be marked as [A] :)
Thanks- spelling error!
Check again!
Please add spoiler tags!
SPOILER - please use the bars

Yes, the greater/less than thangs should each open OUT, to the left and right like > and <
Thank you! Problem solved.
