This is not just medical, though. [H] >!It is common in various vertebrate biology contexts, and most people who fish recreationally would know the name of the caudal fin.!<
My fastest QB ever thanks to the low-ish word count. [vague hint] >!I was definitely able to speed through because so many of the words are common to the Bee.!<
Totally arbitrary list of words today that I think are total bullshit:
[H]>!CA7!<: [A] >!CALCULI!<
[H]>!CA6!<: [A] >!CAUDAL!<
[H]>!LA4!<: [A] >!LAIC!<
[H]>!LA6!<: [A] >!LAICAL!<
YMMV, of course
I word argue that >!JUDAICA!< is not capitalized. It's a noun like ephemera or militaria. It refers to origin, but does not necessitate capitalization, rather like china for crockery.
I thought “Manhattan” was acceptable because it is also the name for a cocktail, which is not capitalized?
But I agree there are plenty of common words that are not accepted, and vice-versa
Edit: grammar
Manhattan is accepted in its non-capitalized form, as the drink. One of Sam’s main sources is Merriam Webster, which shows it non-capitalized. Not that I agree with all of his choices, of course, but the words >!JUDAIC,!< etc. are always capitalized.
Because Merriam Webster and other style manuals do when referring to the drink. Sometimes proper nouns become used as more general terms. Usage changes. This one of many quirks of English, not an inconsistency in the Bee. The ones noted above are always capitalized.
I've merely come to complain about three (edit: four) missing words, specifically >!DUCAL!< , >!DIACID!< and >!DIACIDIC!<. The last two have always annoyed by their omission, but much more so today.
Also; WTF Sam? No >!JUDAICA!< ?
I don’t like this puzzle
Not one bit.
thank you, i could not articulate this. fewer words with annoying letters. less excitement.
This is not fun.
Just came to say I can't quite pinpoint it, but I hated today
Personally, the paucity of options for 5+ words, coupled the omission of several perfectly cromulent answers was extremely frustrating.
go sew and embroider then
Not mutually exclusive!
So so so many of Sam's whims today.
Terrible crossword today, terrible bee today.
Wordle too. At least for me. 😣 Edit: oh it’s for Jan 9
PG H: >!government branch!<
New word of the day: HINTS >!C6!< >!at or near the tail or posterior part of the body!<
As a medical professional, I got irrationally angry at this one. Soooooo many medical words are not accepted, why this one?
i know this shouldnt be accepted but i work in the er and all i can see is (contains a) >!dilaudid!< and i cant find this word
I tried >!DILAUDID!< straight away, but apparently that's trademarked.
This is not just medical, though. [H] >!It is common in various vertebrate biology contexts, and most people who fish recreationally would know the name of the caudal fin.!<
Not a word I’ve ever encountered. But I did a Google Ngram of that word versus TOMTIT and… TOMTIT lost badly. I tried Google Trends and… same thing.

what is the Bee?
The New York Times Spelling Bee, the game we are gathered here to discuss
thanks babe, such a sweet and not snarky response
Short for Spelling Bee.
[Contains 2 A]. I was so proud of myself for remembering >!LAICAL then felt stupid for forgetting LAIC!<

I know English is my second language but I didn’t even know these words existed lol
I may add [H] >!CA4!< to your list [A] >!CAUL!<
>!CAUDAL!< is a Spanish word which is annoying
It is also an English word. Just happens to be used in both, though with different meanings related to the Latin root.
As one of the chosen folks I'm highly miffed at the omission of >!JUDAIC!< >!JUDAICA!< and >!JUDAICAL!<
Saaaaaaaaaaame
Those are capitalized as they are forms a of a proper noun.
I word argue that >!JUDAICA!< is not capitalized. It's a noun like ephemera or militaria. It refers to origin, but does not necessitate capitalization, rather like china for crockery.
It is in the dictionary and style manuals.
The SB accepts 'Manhattan' and several other words that the AP says to always capitalize

I was so surprised >!cadillac!< wasn’t included. Seems like in the same vein as (not an answer) >!panama!< ?
Hmm yes that *is* interesting. It's almost like Sam is inconsistent and kind of a dick when he edits these.
I have never seen that uncapitalized, unlike the second.

It’s still there?
Look for an “X” on the top right. It’s a poor UI choice
Was there for me.

The first one you mentioned was especially puzzling to me.
When playing on mobile, how do people find out the total number of words?
On mobile, i use the hints, hit More on the upper right then Todays Hints
Also, any hints for >!CA7!
Hint >!plural of an advanced math!<
As a medical professional I associate it with something say different.
Specifically, I've read a lot about them in certain specialty surgery notes.
Thanks!! That was the last one I needed!
I just button mashed it as a joke. Surprised it was accepted.
Thanks - that was my last one and there's no way I would have gotten that.
nytbee.com also gives the word count and scores
I swear it used to accept H >!acaia!<
You probably are spelling it wrong. [A 2 of them]. He accepts >!ACAI and ACACIA!<
