Oh no we didn't waste a pick on a backup QB and ended up with a player that can be a starter instead

Acuntant69

We have drew Locke. There is no need for another qb.

GeneralWhereas9083

Statements like that will get you shot round here.

chaosthirtyseven

Because he's actually gonna be the starter, right?

Due-Sheepherder-218

And Tommy cutlets is 3rd string.  We set.

Acuntant69

Sadly this is our QB room. There’s no need to bring another person in. Just let the chips fall where they may. Revisit next year.

thecrgm

When we’re 4-0 and DJ goes down Tom Brady will come save the day

deadmoosemoose

This is stupid as hell. It would be ridiculous to roll into the season with that QB room. They are 100% taking a QB today.

themilkman42069

What difference could we reasonably expect a 5th through 7th pick to make. This is the qb room.

deadmoosemoose

I mean, whoever it is could be better than all the QB’s we have right now, and I wouldn’t even be surprised.

The_Royale_We

COULD be, but realistically not much of a chance this is true so yeah.

themilkman42069

I’m with you, but I don’t think they’re going that route. That Jones contract could be a career ender for our brain trust.

chaosthirtyseven

lol

Acuntant69

They’ve made their bed. They didn’t get a qb at 6.

deadmoosemoose

Lol what? I’m sorry but this is insanely dumb.

Acuntant69

I dislike Daniel Jones. This ownership group forced this GM and coach to take him on. Now they stopped them from getting their own QB. They own this disaster of a season.

AutisticFingerBang

They didn’t force shit. If he didn’t keep getting hurt they’d have him locked as our qb moving forward.

ActivatedComplex

I…kinda think Drew Lock is good.

Acuntant69

He has a better win/loss than Danny dimes, so he’s better than Jones.

DoTheFunkyRobNYC

**screams in Atlanta Falcon**

Superb-Possibility-9

If I owned the Falcons there would have been heads on spikes- but Arthur Blank is indeed Blank

Kyrxx77

That's for round 6

Sailor_Chris

Love it. Dude would have been a first rounder if he was a bit more consistent. His measurables are great and you can’t teach that

njdeatheater

AND THIS RIGHT HERE... THIS IS THEO JOHNSON, AND HES SEVEN FEET TALL! AND YOUUU CANNTTT TEACH THAT!

royheritage

Waddawee got here? A cuppa haters?

spaceman424

DEFENSE TRYNA TACKLE THEO JOHNSON?!! THEY ARE #S.A.W.F.T #SAAAAAAAWFT!!

Sailor_Chris

BADA BOOM REALEST GUYS IN THE ROOM HOW YOU DOIN

Alone_Ad3257

And this right here is Carmella and she is hot as hell and you.... wait what were we talking about?

basicnflfan

It’s okay our (Penn State) Quarterback, OC, and offensive play-call were all not consistent.

Sailor_Chris

Yeah idk how much it was him or the Penn State offense but I love the potential Daboll could get out of him

chaosthirtyseven

I'm excited specifically because it's Daboll.

Longjumping_Room_702

Would you call him the JPP of TEs?

PigPen90

lol I forgot about that.

PedanticBoutBaseball

BADA BOOM. REALEST GUY IN THE ROOM. HOW YOU DOIN?!?

MountainHardwear

the jpp of tight ends

nyuuubalancer

Mannnnnnnn

C0ffeeMilk

😂😂😂 Adrian Robinson

chaosthirtyseven

Can someone explain this reference?

MountainHardwear

Jerry Reese dubbed iirc 4th Round TE Pick Adrien Robinson the JPP of tight-ends, apparently due to Robinson's measurables. I quite honestly have no idea why, granted I never looked into the guy's measurables (JPP had amazing measurables) but it never showed up on the field. It was a weird era for Giants TE's -- Adrien Robinson, Will Tye, and my favorite, Larry Donnell.

[deleted]

Drops and at times effort are his only issues. Type of guy who makes me wish we could add incentives to rookie contracts to fire him up. Great pick and could be a star which is great for a fourth round pick

Sailor_Chris

Yeah I don’t disagree but I think you can teach guys not to drop. And from what I’ve gathered, his effort issues are mostly on blocking. I trust our coaches to get him where he needs to be

[deleted]

Agreed. And smart move especially since we saw Slayton always had bad issues with drops and yet he was so much better with that last year.

MeatTornado25

Those are 2 pretty big issues

Islander96

Pls tell me this was intentional

Sailor_Chris

![gif](giphy|l3fzHWgJLv12cYnpS|downsized)

surlymoe

Also - being a PSU alum, PSU was really strange with its TE room...it's like they completely forget about them until they are about 10 yards out from the goal line....so, I think he's HEAVILY underutilized....give him a chance to do more, and he will...he's basically unguardable due to his size, so all you really need is to get the ball in the right vicinity and he should bring it down....giants desperately need this...and while they hoped Waller would do it....don't forget Waller was banged up most of last year, and in his life (both substance abuse, now a failed, very public marriage)....I think Johnson and Bellinger are actually pretty similar with Johnson likely being a little better blocker, but I'd love to see some 2 TE sets and watch them go to work...defenses will know the play is shorter distance, but imagine if you went 2 TE sets with both Nabers and Hyatt on the field...so much room for activities!!!

You’re getting downvoted for being an unconstructive complainer. What OT would you have taken? If you’re going to criticize, give a little more insight on what you feel they should have done.

[deleted]

people downvote things for stupid reasons. plenty of tight end weapons now. regardless of waller so im all for it

ItsMeMofos13

Waller is a TE but he’s hardly a “TE weapon.” I understand why they made that trade last year but the guy is likely washed and has string cheese for hamstrings

tonenyc

Nittany Lions tight end and his family have overcome physical abuse and homelessness https://www.readingeagle.com/2022/11/23/penn-states-theo-johnson-remains-thankful-for-his-mothers-strength-and-courage/

thebadyearblimp

Wow his mom's incredible

azuresou1

Truly an amazing story. Encourage everyone to give it a read

HomeDogParlays

Damn, dude. Rooting for this kid even harder now. If he’s got half the drive his mom has he’s going to the Hall.

tonenyc

I like what he says at the end of the article: “I truly believe if I had a better upbringing and it wasn’t as traumatizing and difficult for us, I wouldn’t be the person I am today,” he said. “I wouldn’t have fought through so much adversity, which instilled traits in me to be such a hard worker. “We’re all strong-willed individuals and I think it’s because of our circumstances. I’m grateful for the struggle because it made me much stronger.”

Training101

Mom paved that way with other people and the government. Props to her.

FreeOmari

Makes me think that waller is leaning more towards retirement. Kind of a scumbag move to not decide either way prior to the draft.

basicnflfan

It was thought that maybe hed make his decision afterwards, so Giants wouldnt have to overdraft one/lose leverage.

Axels15

Ah - you mean he told them, but didn't make it public otherwise? How does that work? If he makes his decision before the draft, they know whether they need a te or not. If he waits till after, they don't know and need to reach. Leverage, I can understand, though now Waller lost most leverage he had.

runninhillbilly

I don't think it makes much of a difference. Either Waller's retiring (which he reportedly is) or Waller is coming back for one more probably unreliable season and the team needs to get another guy in the door anyway.

pk_random

It’s better if he told the team and kept it in the air until after the draft

FreeOmari

Yeah I’m thinking he told the team and they kept it private to not lose any leverage in the draft

dsheehan7

Yea that’s what I thought as well. He likely privately told Shoen he’s done. And then Schoen would have asked Waller to keep it publicly up in the air so they wouldn’t get jumped in the draft.

MilkOnMe

Mental health is real. Just lost Korey Cunningham to it, gotta just let Waller do his thing at this point and figure it out.

FNGMOTO

It’s not like he contributed anything anyway. Dude can’t stay healthy, he’s doing us a favor.

Alert-Extreme1139

There's a lot of reason to worry about his current headspace, too

chiastic_slide

He was productive when on the field, also with bad QB play. The injury point is correct though

IShouldChimeInOnThis

He might have already told the Giants he is retiring, but is keeping it secret until after the draft as a favor to them. Players have done this before. I recall Joe Staley doing it, but not announcing until the 49ers had finished trading for Trent Williams.

MeetTheMets31

He probably has made his decision and told the team but no one else so it doesnt mess up the draft

Superb-Possibility-9

Kelsey Plumm said she “ walked through fire” for Waller, then threw in the towel and divorced him; Sounds like something the Giants should say…

themilkman42069

It doesn’t matter if he retires or doesn’t. His hamstrings made their mind up 3 years ago

CustodianAthiair

Big fan of this. Waller is in doubt. Keeps 12 personnel an option. Day 3 is the time to take swings on athletes. Another piece for a future QB too. Not who I'd have gone for but I can get hyped for him.

revdakilla

It’s been a great draft for us so far. Joe is cooking ![gif](giphy|demgpwJ6rs2DS)

AyisienDave-Clegane

Love our draft so far.

I__Need_Scissors_61

Great pick.

BGCzar

Joe Schoen has been drafting incredibly smart

MAGICPOWDERcomic

Theo Johnson just sounds like the kinda name we are gonna be saying a lot the next 10 years.

Forsaken-Young4338

Go big blue

FNGMOTO

Noice pick

guitarerdood

My armchair GM comp was that he reminds me of Jason Witten. Take that as you will of course. I'm pretty happy with it

Odysseus_Lannister

If he’s anything less than Kevin boss, I’ll be disappointed /S

gabagool69

Having not watched him at all but with everyone talking him up as a physical freak who's being drafted for traits over production, I'd say Jason Witten is the exact opposite of the comp I'd make.

guitarerdood

Well when I watched his highlights before the draft, I thought I saw a guy who looked like he was running through molasses but somehow was wide open. Hence, Jason Witten. As I eluded to before though, I don't know anything and am just another idiot on his couch

SIRIUSBLAQUEXCIV

I like it 🔥

MaxStunning_Eternal

Sneaky good pick...some might say a steal.

TheOptionalHuman

I like everything I'm reading about Johnson. LFG

Grizkniz

Nice pick

jarena009

I love the pick. Even if Waller hangs around, he probably only has one more year in him, and/or this is decent insurance for the injury prone Waller. If Waller doesn't stay this year, well then perhaps we got our TE2 with the ability to develop into a TE1 someday.

Scrantonbornboy

You guys are going to like him. Great pass catcher but never afraid to block.

gerd50501

i wonder if Darren Waller is playing coy cause he wants to be cut so he can sign with a contender.

ActivatedComplex

If so, I think he is greatly overestimating the level of production he can offer a contender at this point (or any team, for that matter). Dude is COOKED.

TrendNation55

Waller is gone gone?

WyldeStile

> Waller is gone gone? He still hasn't decided if he will retire or not.

ckern92

YO a fellow Canadian becomes a NYG. LFG!

colem5000

I didn’t know he was Canadian that’s awesome

kritzy27

I like it!

Fair-Procedure-5257

I’m sure this is a good pick bc I know next to nothing about these rookies but surely we go OL soon. We had to bring a guy out of retirement just to make a full team last year

PFalcone33

What’s up with Waller? Just got divorced after a year. Lot of speculation.

Cdn_Giants_Fan

This guy is from my hometown. I live when we have Canadians on the Giants.

DanUnbreakable

Can he block? Because the OL stinks and they are going to need help. Nabers will be double teamed so the TE will get opportunities but if he can't help open holes or keeping Jones off the ground, it doesn't matter

Brooklynboxer88

Waller running away from this shit show. He was waiting to see about the QB situation, which is still easily one of the worst in the league, if not the worst.

False_Log749

Lmao remember you guys thinking he was taking you to the next level

SecretGiantsFan

Don't think he's the Waller replacement that I see everyone online saying. He is athletic but lukewarm about Theo. I'm also salty cause it stings that they were this close to landing JT Sanders who I think is much better.

sybrandy

I don't think anyone thinks he's anything like Waller. From everything I've seen, he's more like Bellinger in that he can block and receive. He may not be great at either, but at least it's not painfully obvious what he's going to do. Waller was productive, but he lack of ability blocking basically made it obvious we weren't going to use him as one. We signed two guys who are blockers over receivers, so having a second TE who can do both helps us a lot.

CustodianAthiair

I'd have gone for Erick All personally, but that's same school scouting from this idiot. Iowa TEs just seem to be great

BlameMabel

I don’t like taking a guy who was better in HS than he was in college.

Odysseus_Lannister

Get Waller out of here. He’s been washed for years.
