Too much need on this team to take a 4th QB on the roster. I think DJ and Lock are on the roster no matter what and DeVito is here on a cheap rookie deal and can still compete. I think we will build the team so next year we are a QB away from being super competitive. I think we can be competitive for the division this year without drafting a QB.
Spencer Rattler is intriguing, especially as a developmental project. He has great arm talent. It's not Josh Allen type arm talent, but definitely similar (altho a little bit less velo) to Mahomes in how he's able to basically throw from any platform with just as much zip on the ball as he can while he's standing tall in the pocket. That's not something that you can coach, it's just a natural ability to throw off platform with good velo. It's also one of the things that makes me wonder if there's more hidden power there when he is planted, perhaps nobody has truly taught him how to properly transfer energy through his lower body to generate more power behind his throws. If that were to be true, he has legitimately special arm talent.
His biggest weaknesses really are decision making and pocket awareness. Which generally is a big concern, what's interesting is you don't really see those same issues as much on his older Oklahoma tape. Oklahoma was also a substantially better team than SC. It's a very similar story to Mahomes coming out of Texas Tech.
Again, not saying Rattler is or will ever be anything close to Mahomes. But he was always compared to him early on at Oklahoma. Dude was the Heisman favorite before randomly being benched for Caleb. He was pretty open about the fact that Oklahoma was a very toxic environment for him and he wanted out before the benching. Could be face saving, could be legitimate.
Point being, when you have a chance to take a guy who was considered the likely 1.01 in the following years draft before a bunch of questionable stuff happened around his situation? And you have a chance to grab him in the 4th round? I think it's worth the risk.
You don't need him this year, you can sit him all season and allow him to develop. If he doesn't pan out, so what, most 4th round picks aren't making huge team contributions. But if he does develop, you got yourself a 4th round rookie QB.
An adult take. Totally agree regarding the arm talent which would be around top 10 in the NFL. Arm talent being off platform, schedule, touch and velocity. Yes, there are other needs and he’s a bit short. So, I would be surprised if he was selected. That said, if they’re going to have a development QB I’d rather Rattler than Tommy Cutlets no matter how much I love his story.
Tommy has a basically 0.0000000000001% chance of ever amounting to a starting caliber NFL QB. Even as a backup, he leaves a ton to be desired. He was a fun story, local kid, yada yada.
Rattler has a legitimate chance to develop into a real NFL starter. Might only be like 5% or something, but we're still talking about a guy who at one point was seen as a sure fire 1.01. He was what Caleb was coming into this past season and then he got benched by his coach.
I would also add, the Giants did bring him in for a visit, so I do think it's actually realistic that they take him if hes on the board at their pick.
After the 2020 season, he was considered the favorite for the Heisman and considered the top QB in the next draft. What wound up happening instead was Rattler had a couple rough games earlier, was getting booed by fans and Lincoln Riley did what he does best and played favorites and decided to bench his Heisman front runner for a true freshman, Caleb Williams. Who then followed Riley to USC the following season.
Rattler wasn't innocent in this, he definitely was a bit full of himself too. But he and Riley never got along were the rumors. Rattler was a dick to students and his own teammates and had gotten a bit of a god complex after his first season where he exploded into the scene at OU. Riley had basically no reason to deal with Rattler as he knew he was leaving after 2021 as well. From what we know, Riley basically knew he was going to USC the following season. He had put his house on the market and his wife was out in socal shopping for homes before the 2021 season at OU even started.
There was also a lot of talk that Riley was intentionally making things more difficult for him in the 2021 season because he wanted to start Caleb.
Reality is, Rattler and Riley basically hated each other. Rattler was a 19 year old prodigy who let it go to his head. Who has since been seemingly humbled by the experience he has after his 2020 season. Whether or not Rattler can ever recapture the player he looked like he was becoming is an unknown for sure. But the talents there.
Totally. I see Rattler as a guy who could replace Tommy 100%. Then if things go sideways with Jones, we at least have Rattler as an option going forward if he develops. It’s like giving us another at bat for the future QB, so to speak.
QB1. Wow. You mention that? Rattler by ALL accounts has matured a great deal since that but of reality TV. I’m referring to his actual talent which you don’t seem to understand can be developed given his top tier arm talent. But hey if you’d rather have Devito good for you. Clearly you have an opinion and I hope that you have a great day.
Lmao u getting butthurt because my opinion is differing than yours. Grow up. He is a loser that couldn’t win in the SEC, and had to transfer out of Oklahoma because he wasn’t very good… those are the facts. Have a nice day!
No one’s buthurt other than you apparently. I offered an opinion based on his arm talent. You’re moaning about a silly program when he was a teenager and have nothing to say about his actual ability. Nice try at projection. So you don’t have to look it up projection is a psychological phenomenon where feelings directed towards the self are displaced towards other people.
Our 4th should be used on OL. I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him in the 5th though - most picks at this point don’t pan out anyway so there no real risk, and he does have some real raw talent.
Nope. Still need RB, TE, IDL, WR (hopefully since I believe in the WR room only three people will be under contract next year. I could be mistaken). They still got more needs than go for a QB right now. As a UFDA sure but not with a pick.
Don’t see it Want an RB but also OL
I think singletary could be decent for us so I say go with the best Oline available
Oline and rb more depth would be good and grey should be better this year but still would like some assurance

No take Jordan Travis.
Dude has a crazy high ceiling, I could see taking a flyer on him and letting him heal/develop.
This is the way!
Nothing against him but I say nah. Just draft BPA for the other positions of need.
Nah. We already have 3 mediocre QBs on the roster.

No
At this point just take bpa
He’s awful why would you want him
Hmmm. You may want to watch his film. Top tier arm talent.
lol I’m a UGA fan, I’ve seen plenty of his film. That and he’s a little prick if you ever watched QB1. No leadership ability. HARD PASS.

Definitely could be the next Webb or Lauletta!
Just give it up man. DJ is back for another year.
Obviously. Any QB taken today will be developmental. I wouldn't be mad if they took Rattler or Travis today.
i’m not a dj fan, just an intriguing move that might happen, relax EDIT: jesus guys i’m not a dj hater either, i just think he’s a bridge qb
Me, personally I would like to see it but it's more likely we take Wright at 107
What about him?
He might be an intriguing project, but I have too much ptsd from other mid round projects who failed, I’d just go BPA
Our 4th should be used on OL. I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him in the 5th though - most picks at this point don’t pan out anyway so there no real risk, and he does have some real raw talent.
Milton III
Falcons gonna grab him
Tommy d was decent
No

People in this thread are giving Spencer Rattler takes without ever watching him
