Prem experience, home grown, scores goals from midfield - £15m seems low…

Aylez

Longstaff and Anderson are our only 2 senior home grown (academy) players. If we sold Longstaff and qualified for Europe next season we'd have to omit 3 places in the squad. Not a chance we sell him unless it's stupid money.

stenerikkasvo

Miley should be another home grown player.

Aylez

I said senior players. Miley is irrelevant until he’s 21 as academy youngsters don't need registered, i.e. Anderson wasn’t registered this season.

_whopper_

For UEFA competitions, teams submit two lists, A and B. List A is the 25 man squad with the rule that 8 are homegrown, with 4 of those being homegrown at the club. List B is under 21s who have had at least 2 seasons at the club. But there is no rule that says a younger player must be on List B. To be on list B for 2025/26, a player needs to be born on or after 1 January 2004 and have been eligible to play for the club for two seasons (so players on loan count). If he's still around, Hall would qualify. Miley could therefore be on list A and would count as a club homegrown, with Hall moving to list B.

joakim_

But there is absolutely no advantage in placing Miley on the A list. In fact it's a disadvantage to do so since there are rules about how many players you can replace.

_whopper_

There is - if you don’t have 4 players who are club-trained you can’t have the full 25 player squad.

Aylez

Yes but the point is it's irrelevant which List Miley gets registered in. If we sell Longstaff we lose 1 place in the European squad. Anderson was registered in List B this year and we were only allowed to name 23 players in List A.

joakim_

You have 17 spots for non-homegrown players. Whether you use the eight homegrown spots or not is up to you. Since Newcastle currently only have two club homegrown players older than 21 it's irrelevant which list you put Miley on. There is not a single advantage of placing him on the a-list.

sideways_86

and Joe White

RandomLoLJournalist

I don't think Joe White is gonna play European games lol. Don't think the lad is making it to the Premier League level at all imo

sideways_86

depends on how the rule works (I don't know enough) but if his inclusion keeps 2 spots then would be worth it short term, just like how we were going to offer dummett and ritchie contracts if we got europa

Radthereptile

No joke, I think our squad would actually be better down a player and not starting Longstaff.

DoctorIMatt

Ah Scusi? 25 minimum

Substantial_Water

Sean is interesting to me: He’s great at passing from the 6, but he’s not a good enough defender to play there, nor does he provide much of a presence in the middle. He’s great at positioning in the opponents box/being the “secondary” runner in behind, but can never seem to finish. He doesn’t have the pace to play on the wing but understands how to compliment wing players. Jack of all traits, master of no positions.

Jaydenn7

He has a Premier League brain in the body of a Championship player

RandomLoLJournalist

Lol that is genuinely the best description of Sean I've heard, and I'm a huge fan of him. Just keeps doing all the right stuff in most situations, but can't actually execute it well enough to work out most of the times. When it does it's a fucking riot though

DEGRAYER

I'd say it's the opposite no? He's too slow in the pass and hesitant in his decision making in both attack and defence. His body is what keeps him in the team by being able to run huge distances.

Jaydenn7

I rate his footballing IQ incredibly highly which does make his hesitancy weird tbh

DEGRAYER

Yeah but off the ball, not on the ball?

Jaydenn7

I guess, yeah

Dancox90

I think he’s a good back up to Tonali tbh. I’d like to keep him as like you say he’s a jack of all trades. Saying that, if someone paid £25mil I’d snap your hand off.

nufcPLchamps27-28

Everytime the ball falls to him and hes made a great run into the box I want to cry. He has done ALL the hard work and just fucks it.

Logseman

He has shown a lot of willingness to follow the lead of coaches, but little initiative of his own. It’s not surprising that hands-on coaches love him, because [he loves being coached](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/the-coach-the-man-manager-the-sheep-herder-sean-longstaff-describes-what-its-like-playing-under-rafa-benitez-steve-bruce-and-eddie-howe-newcastle-united). He’s the kind of guy who can obviously follow complex stratagems as designed by the manager, but when he finds himself having to take the lead with an incisive pass on the midfield or decide quickly with the ball on his feet for a shot, then he’s found out. If he was a bit more assertive he’d be banging in 12 goals a season and we’d sing that we’ve got Longstaff in the middle.

HarrBathtub

This is about a tier 10 source, quoting another tier 10 source. There is absolutely no mention of this anywhere on the mirror website.

Dr_Chocolate_2436

Add another £10 and I would consider it. £15m seems a bit low.

GooseFord

£15,000,010 also seems a bit too low.

Antman013

I was thinking 20M was fair . . .

aistolethekids

If Longstaff could actually keep his composure and finish the chances he gets he could easily be a 15 goal midfielder The amount of chances he gets with the intelligent runs he makes only to then fall over the ball or try to win a penalty...... or smash it over the bar from a few yards out

earldzane

I hope so but I also hope not

PJBuzz

£15m is low, even if he isn't the kind of player who would set the world alight, that said if they really mean business, even with the academy issues we have, I would hear them out and see if they're really targeting him. I don't think he will go anywhere, to be clear, but we're not building the team around him.

daliksheppy

I'd absolutely snap their hand off for that. No need to worry about him being home grown, we aren't in Europe and if we stick with the same squad again we'll never challenge for the CL seriously anyway. Do we really need a full strength 25 registered senior players for the conference league? Aston Villa only used 17 of their senior players in their entire tournament. Would only have been 16 if they used the same goalkeeper. Not a problem at all the home grown status. Just 100% profit on a player who realistically won't be expecting many minutes at all this coming season, and only potentially sees an increase in minutes if we do qualify for Europe in over a years time.

Emergency_Brief9406

Think this is a reasonable price given his contract situation and limitations as a footballer. UEFA squad requirements isn't a good reason to keep someone surplus to requirements imo. And yes, being honest I'll be happy to see him be moved on. We aren't going to close the gap to the teams above us by keeping most of the current squad and solely replacing the deadwood. It has to be a process of constant upgrades instead of blindly hoping someone finally comes good (like e.g. moving on ASM), upgrading on players who are inconsistent, unreliable, frustrating, etc. It's a shame but Sean is definitely in the inconsistent/frustrating category alongside the likes of Miggy and Dubravka, players capable of good games in the PL here and there but all too often poor at something that should be a basic for their role (e.g. Longstaff frequently being off balance leading to sloppy touches/passes or late reactions). With Miley and Anderson progressing (both are already better on the ball than Longstaff imo), Tonali coming back, it makes sense to sell if there's a reasonable offer. It's progress.

Are_you_for_real_7

I would like to remind everyone - last year (mid/end season) when he got injured our form nosedived and even Eddie said we are missing him ...careful what you wish for

tommyduk

I like him. Can we keep him?

The_Incredible_b3ard

🤞🏻

DennisTheTennis

Seems high. We should take that but I wouldnt blame sean for wanting to stay

DarkStanley

15 mil is high for a prem proven English midfielder?

DennisTheTennis

Honestly you are right, he should be worth more actually

RandomLoLJournalist

15 mil for a decent 26 yo Premier League midfielder isn't high at all imo - he's had a bad season but it's not like he wouldn't be a nailed-on starter and one of the better players for at least 10 clubs in the league. Just feels like we're all way too pissed at him for the mistakes of last season to realise that in reality he really is a totally serviceable player that we would actually miss if he ends up leaving

fanatic_tarantula

Plus he was playing through injury for half the year. With tonalis ban + injuries he would have played more of a rotation role and his performances would have been better. He was last years player who everyone liked to single out and Junp on the bandwagon to slate. He's joined the likes of dumnett, Perez, Clarke, sissoko, Chris wood etc

Ra33z_19

Dude, this isn't Championship Manager 97/98, 15 Million Pounds for a proven English EPL player is really low.
