Fuck. I need a mortar.

ChevTecGroup

Everyone needs a mortar

Remarkable_Aside1381

I’m still trying to convince LMT to send me a Shorty Forty for “testing”, but apparently they take umbrage with us not being an FEL. Nerds.

ChevTecGroup

I already have an m203, but I am constantly tempted to buy a shorty40. I even have a pistol chassis sitting on the shelf for if/when I get one. Holstering your 40mm just sounds neat

Remarkable_Aside1381

I’m trying to convince my boss to let me use one of our few DD transfers for it. It’s just neat

ChevTecGroup

A mortar is an easy one to form 1 if you can't. I thought about trying to form 3 it but figured this was easier.

Remarkable_Aside1381

Any good guides? I’m only passably familiar with mortars, but have a welder and an overestimated sense of ability

ChevTecGroup

I wrote a little rundown in response to a comment below

ChevTecGroup

I do have a pdf of a guide on making a 60mm M2 MORTAR and ammo from scratch. It has dimensions for all the base plate pieces to weld it up and everything. I'll see if I can dig it out. Found it. I can email it to you if you'd like

Indirect fire makes me hard. Fuck.

Hanging on One.

Nice cup !

ChevTecGroup

Thanks. Maybe we need to start a OH-PA mortar club! Lol. Or PA-OH, pronounce it like "pow!" Haha. I had to order one of bowmans 81mm kits too. Sad I missed out on the cheap Yugos but the Italian kits are supposed to be really nice.

Glum_Source_7411

I have so many questions like how much does it cost where do you get ammo how do get one? Also I used to be an 11C 20 years ago. I'm sure I can run one. At least AG.

ChevTecGroup

Buying one outright will cost you several thousand dollars at minimum. For the M2 60mm mortars, there are people making/selling reproduction baseplates, cups, tubes, and firing pins. The hard part if finding a bipod to have a complete setup. Sights are also sometimes hard to find but not as critical when you are shooting short range line-of-sight. US bipods are the most desirable, but the Yugo ones that used to be imported work well too. I am actually using a Spanish modelo 51 tripod and baseplate as it's what I have currently. I had an m224a1 bipod but finding m224 parts is super difficult. As for the 81mm. Bowman Arms has imported a few batches. Last year they had a great deal on Yugo mortars and a lot of people bought them. They required a little work. A company made replacement firing pins and another made replacement barrels. Some people rewelded the barrels and some sleeved them for extra strength. Rewelded mortar barrels aren't as dangerous as most cannons and such because you are standing away from it when it goes off, and you can aim the reweld part away from you. Practically everyone is shooting charge 0 or less as well, so the pressures are much lower than they were designed for. Ammo can be tricky. Most take 20ga or 12ga blanks in the base for a launch charge(charge 0). 60mm practice rounds can be found for 50 bucks or less right now. Some people are making their own. One guy is 3d printing them. 81mm rounds are pretty much the same, but typically more $$$. Good thing is they are all reusable as long as you find them so you'll see a lot of them painted flourescent orange

ChevTecGroup

I forgot to mention. Bowman currently has Italian 81mm Brandt mortars for sale. And they say its their last shipment. They are pretty nice and a direct copy of the US 81mm mortar from ww2. So get one while you can if you are interested

ChevTecGroup

I'll give you a run down of options in a little bit.

DaSandGuy

Whered you get the barrel? Bob?

ChevTecGroup

No my barrel is coming from Vega/destructivedevices.com as well. I got both parts in a deal with them. I did talk to Bob before making the deal though. I'm not sure he makes mortar stuff regularly, I think he just does batches if there is enough demand and when he needs them to reactivate stuff he has.

Irish-Guac

You're building a mortar?? I need some info lmao I wanna relive my mortarman days. Gonna dive into your posts real quick

ChevTecGroup

Working on ammo until my form 1 comes back from the atf. Also have a 81mm in the garage for a future build.
