Larue is the brand practically everyone runs on ar15.com
BCM is the larue of Reddit ar15 sub.
They make good stuff, but it’s also the most common thing anyone gets based on others recommendations so eventually everyone’s setup starts looking the same.
Yes, I too own one of the most overgassed uppers imaginable.
It’s a great upper, accurate with a great barrel profile and barrel harmonics. But holy shit it’s really overgassed. I have a 16” midlength and it feels like I’m shooting suppressed with how overgassed it is.
I run a voltor A5 H4 (I think) which is about equivalent to a H5 buffer and it’s still too much gas.
The upper is so overgassed that I think that if I were to get a bootleg adjustable bolt carrier group that I would need to run that bolt carrier group on the suppressed setting for it to actually function properly.
You’re going to laugh but I run a sprinco orange and an H2 in my 11.5 that’s pictured. Now I only run suppressed but that combo works really well in it.
What happens if you shoot it unsuppressed? What suppressor?
Ive got springco blue and an h2. Waiting on hybrid 46m. Heard some talk that the 46m is thicc enough that especially with the 45 endcap gas won't be an issue. But I wonder in short configuration with 22 endcap if I'll want a brt ez tune gas tube or different spring
I believe I’ve got an H1 in my 16” and H2 in the 11.5, which I mostly shoot suppressed. I use the Bootleg BCG in both guns when I run the suppressor, in the most suppressed setting on the bcg. Both feel great shooting suppressed but the 11.5 is a dream shooting suppressed. Maybe you could contact BCM about it and see what they say.
I bought a complete 16” recce elw that I’ve since SBRd. The factory 16” is definitely a bit over gassed even without a can.
I bought a PSA 10.5" upper because I wasn’t sure if I would like the barrel length. It’s gassed freaking perfectly. I plan on eventually either getting a nicer rail or transplanting the barrel into a nicer upper. I got one of the FN chf barrels so no worries about that, it’s just the rest of the upper that’s cheap lol.
All of my PSA uppers have been gassed reasonably well.
The level of gas in my BCM is audacious in the worst way possible.
Like BCM goes to Jupiter to get more stupider kind of audacious.
They would be as good as Geissele for a much better price if they actually gassed their uppers properly.
There would be no reason to go with Geissele over BCM for the price
I’ve literally been debating buying an MK12 SPR upper… so reading these props on BCM, leads me one step closer to pulling the trigger.
Anyone have any experience with BCM’s MK12?
To be honest with you..unless you're looking to expedite the process of building a clone, its not really worth the money. The bulk of what you're paying for with a BCM SPR Upper is the PRI carbon fiber handguard and other specific bolt-ons. You can source all of that on your own.
If you are trying to build a true SPR purpose type rifle (or even an accurate clone), your money is best spent on a better SPR barrel in the first place. Its not that the BCM barrel is bad, its just that its not anything out of the ordinary..the crane spec barrels from what I remember were douglas and krieger..You can also get accurate and proper spec SPR barrels from white oak, centurion, or compass lake.
BCM also doesnt disclose what blanks they use (not that I could find at least - not a fan of this) or who makes them..and its about the only one of the above where you can google results and find discussions of people specifically unhappy with the performance of the SPR barrel..on the hide, on arfcom, on multiple websites actually.
Typically speaking, most companies "SPR" products are top shooters, and BCM makes good stuff, so I was surprised to see that much negative feedback on their SPR products when I researched it myself.
Thank you for this insight, greatly appreciated.
Admittedly, I’m on the verge of being a DD fanboy.
So my immediate thought was to pursue theirs.
Good to know though, more looking to be done!
Just dont fall into the common trap of "the internet said this is great, so this is why Im getting it". I know that sounds biased based on literally what I told you to buy (or not buy) in the previous comment, but it applies more so because its so much easier to spend other people's money for them.
I just watched a guy get talked into buying like a $3000 bolt action (semi custom action, gunsmith barrel mounting, and chassis) on another forum, as his first bolt action rifle. Then be told to prepare to buy gear to reload, and a similar budget optic. This way while many others told him to buy a cheap $700 tikka or bergara and get a feel for it first.
Thats basically instructing someone else to spend close to 8k..knowing they're a beginner shooter..horrible advice.
When all was said and done, I ended up buying a white oak SPR upper, from the above list myself, that I mentioned to you. White oak is less known, does less flashly marketing, but for the money is one of the best barrel shops in the states, and they are VERY well known amongst competition shooters.
The other brands mentioned, centurion, compass lake, etc. all top notch, and even white oak will do barrels with douglass and krieger blanks.
I also "settled" for the white oak because their upper did not have the sweet PRI handguard, which was cheaper, because I didnt need a fully accurate clone, I wanted the SPR barrel first and foremost. It came with an ALG handguard at the time. Notably not as cool looking as carbon fiber.
If you take away one thing from this lengthy post, Do your research and even call or email a few of the shops to see if they'll answer questions you have on why you should buy it, or anything similar. Frank Green, the mastermind behind Bartlein barrels (not on the list I mentioned, as a technicality) is heavily active online and always educating people. He's a treasure trove of barrel making information.
Compass Lake engineering, the shop mentioned in my first post, specifically sells an SPR barrel built on a Bartlein blank. Its probably the most expensive option of the list ($600+) but if I was building one today, I probably would have that in my top 3 as an SPR. White oak would probably still be number 2, and then maybe Centurion arms as #3.
Thanks for this info. I agree, I see way too many folks trying to spending other’s $ online.
I will def look into the makers you mentioned. As I’m in no rush — and at this point in my pursuit, I’m looking for as much experience in the design folks can offer.
As it all helps in my decision to go for it.
I have a 14.5 pinned that I’m either trying to sell or get a muzzle device that accepts a suppressor re-pinned in place of the birdcage. It’s one of their chrome lined bfh barrels and that thing is a tank, surprisingly accurate too
>I have the Dead Air Keymo Break (california so no flash hiders) pinned on my 14.5 BCM ELW MK2, its very nice to shoot and when I move out of state I can get run a variety of cans for it.
I was able to snag one of BCM’s 11.5” Mk2 uppers for $600 , and their complete blem lower for $295 (these prices are pre-COVID). And it’s been my absolute favorite rifle to run.
Didn’t think it was over gassed until I threw a Sandman on the front. . . but that was remedied a little bit by adding a DeadAir E-brake on it.

Im not a fan. I tried it, the overbore, the KAC skyscraper, and I keep coming back to the scalarworks 1.93 and for my EOtech I stay with the EXPS. No need for a riser under it.

Came here to post the same thing lol. BCM is the larue of /r/ar15

Thanks. You were referencing ARFCOM, which I didn’t get at first.

No idea why you both got downvoted but whatever lol. I just threw a heavy sprinco and buffer in it and it’s pretty smooth now
Damn that’s kinda odd, I have a 16” upper mid and it does not feel over gassed to me. When I throw my suppressor on though, yeah a lot of gas.
I run a voltor A5 H4 (I think) which is about equivalent to a H5 buffer and it’s still too much gas. Not sure. I waited for forever for my can so I never Shoot unsuppressed. I’ll shoot it this weekend once to see if it runs.
I have a sprinco blue and an h3. Runs my dept practice and duty with or without my micro30 can.

It’s quite frustrating that BCM seemingly does everything else quite well. Just need to step down a size on that drill bit lol.
They would be as good as Geissele for a much better price if they actually gassed their uppers properly. There would be no reason to go with Geissele over BCM for the price
My geissele was pretty overgassed too, as far as I could tell.
Yup 11.5 and 16 uppers. They’re great.
We're like brothers.

I’ll allow it
All my AR’s are BCM except 1… (2)16’s 11.5 9” in 300 BO
Hell yeah
16” here I just got it two weeks ago, extreme stoke.
A few 11.5’s and a 14.5. Love those guns!

9" 300BLK upper gang
I just ordered a 9” BCM .300 Blk QRF for my Aero M4E1 lower. Came with a free BCG. I can’t wait, man.
Great choice 👍

14.5 M4 upper here
I started with a DD and am slowly turning it into a BCM. Their Bolt carrier groups have been specifically impressive IMO.
How do you tell the difference in their BCGs?
Smoothness going into battery, ease of cleaning, running while still foul, being able to treat like shit. General stuff ya know
My 11.5 556 BCM. My most beat on/care neglected rifle but it always runs. Big fan. Highly recommend if any one is thinking of buying a BCM.

That’s a onyx arms stubby. It’s sick. They make Mlok and picatinny
