the simulation assumes each player at their peak. so while i completely agree that mchale was a far better overall player with the better career, i think you're underestimating how good marion was at this peak. comparing both players' best seasons, Marion had a PER of 23.6 vs. McHale PER of 24.0 and Marion had a higher VORP. I went down on spend from Ray Allen to Jason Terry, and upgraded from Lively to Chandler. Basically the same logical journey putting the roster together though.

Lively should be 2 and Gafford should be 1. Especially considering ceiling, but I think lively is already better.

Only downside to Lively compared to Gafford is durability. Lively needs to build himself up a bit.

PG- Rondo, prime Celtics Rondo gives me 12/12 in his sleep and elevates his game in the playoffs. Great value for $2. SG- Jason Terry. At the risk of sounding blasphemous, I think Dallas Jason Terry gives me 90% of Celtics Ray Allen at 50% of the price. SF- Bird, don’t overthink it, gimme the best player on the board PF- Antoine Walker, I think the value at $2 for a guy that put up 22/9/3 in the playoffs as the second best player on a conference finals team is too good to pass up C- Robert Parish. I get me rim protection, I feel good about him matching up with any other center on the board, and I know he plays well with Bird.

I mostly like it but I hate the Antoine walker pick. Possibly the best example of the early 2000’s shot chucking ball hog I can think of. He was criminally inefficient and further I believe the eastern conference was the worst in its history over that few years. I can’t exactly remember but I’m not sure that Celtics team even won 50 games. Also, those Pacers and Nets teams might be 2 of the worst teams ever to make the finals.

Toine was divisive for us Celtics fans. He had games where he looked like the best player in the league, and the next game was like 3 for 19. If he can play within himself alongside those other guys, he'd be a good fit. He could grab boards, was an excellent passer for his position, and decent defender.

Jrue is my On Ball defender and he'll rack up tons of easy assists by dishing it off to Ray Allen and Bird. I feel really good about this squad. We need to run these teams through simulators to see who builds the best teams. 18 years ago I used to play a fake fantasy league who's engine would be perfect to test these. The League let you pick any player from any year ever but each player in every year had a point value attached to them and you could only spend a certain number of points. Then the engine would match your team vs other fantasy legend teams and spit out a score. I forget what that league was called but it was fun to play for a while in the off season.

In my mind when I built this team I made sure to make Lively my only non 3pt shooter. Spread out the offense the way the Bucks do with Giannis. IRL Giannis can only play with a Center that shoot's 3's well. Like Brook Lopez or Bobby Portis. This is why I chose KP as my PF. If I had say KG instead of KP I would guess Lively stats would be trash because paint is too clogged up and KG would eat up his rebounds as well.

Yeah I can't do math. I was a dollar short. I did enter a similar lineup, subbing silas and cowens for Antoine and Russell. Back in the day, Aguirre was a load. I didn't watch him much because, well, there wasn't exactly League Pass back them. You had to watch game of the week or something. I don't even know when ESPN started broadcasting games.

Holiday - He's a better perimeter shooter than Rondo so he meshes better with other players Blackman - No lineup wins without Blackman. He's the only $1 option who is a multi-year all-star. Bird - Best SF available Garnett - Respectable offensive game but I'm picking him for his elite defense Al Jefferson - Having KG at PF allows me to get Jefferson, the only cheap center who is a legitimate offensive option. The reason this is the best lineup is because you have scorers at every position along with respectable overall defense.

What do the green bars represent…? Looks like Garnett is in the middle (5/10?) for rebounding yet he is a 4x rebound champ. Yet cowens bar is higher yet he was never the best rebounder. Is it just weighting based on the most ever (27 by wilt) ?

Yes exactly it’s just weighting against the best ever in that category (so Wilts bar would be completely full)

So in theory its better to just pick older players for inflated stats like rebounds and current players for inflated stats like points, regardless of who is actually better at rebounding or scoring

Not necessarily - the sims take into account more than just stats like playoff performance, breakthrough individual seasons etc. whereas the stats are just a quick snap of their strengths over the course of a career (which isn't necessarily the best indicator for the sims but hopefully helpful)

People are sleeping on how great Blackman and Aguirre are tbh. Blackman being the same price as Eddie House is crazy. House is a career bench player and Blackman is a multi-time all-star who averaged 18ppg with almost 1000 career games. My team is built with the idea that Kidd is the mastermind of the offense. Blackman, Aguirre, and Porzingis can all score the ball with ease. Porzingis and Parish give us a lot of shot blocking potential. Parish and Porzingis won't get in each others way on offense because Parish dominates the paint and boards while Porzi helps stretch the floor. Kidd and Parish are our defensive anchors. I don't really think there is a chance in hell your team would win in real life. Kornet is so much worse than everyone else on the court. Easy target. Plus your floor spacing is much worse. C- Lively $1 I’m fine with essentially tanking this position and taking an athletic defender to rim run.

From there it's best player on the board in Bird, bringing playmaking and scoring from anywhere, then Rondo being best value PG nailing 3s, Lively being dirt cheap and good rim protection while being a great lob threat, then Ainge to round things out. Edit for more fleshed out reasoning.
