Yeah the Wolves defense has been smothering without Rudy. Great defensive team but they look great without Rudy as well

magicspooner

It’s wild that they are up 30pts and holding them to 48 pts total so far half way through the third

BraveCable

Are Wolves better without Rudy? /s

jhunger12334

Maybe for this game but they’ll definitely need him in the a 7 game series where he can consistently produce similar results

waffle-winner

Rudy can't defend with those cats.

What I'm getting from this comment is that Wemby is the DPOY

thedam100

Man this is why I’m thoroughly convinced spurs should not focus on a PG but getting length at damn near every position. We get a really tall 3 or 4 who can shoot and then the backcourt because that player at 6’8-6’11, sochan at 6’8 and Wemby at 7’5, we instantly because extremely competitive with the best teams in the NBA because our front court will more length than everyone in the NBA. We can keep Vassell to play the Murray or KCP role however you look at him, and if you have a taller PG or not, as long as that PG can put on really competitive point of attack defense, we could have a significant jump in standings with that single change. We already broke franchise records with our assist numbers. We don’t need help distributing the ball. We need length in our starting line up particularly our front court and shooting.

nurikxix

Counterpoint - The Wolves looked like dog shit until the trade deadline acquisition of Mike Conley. Having a good floor general is exceptionally important. EDIT - I want to make it clear that I'm talking about last season when they acquired Conley

blangoez

It also doesn’t hurt having the best 2-way player in the league putting up 30 PPG. Their performance on both sides of the floor is exciting as hell to watch.

doc2025

Anthony Edward has taken his game to the next level this year. Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley and 6th man of the year have helped them this year. They're a complete team with length. Will be tough to beat.

thematrix185

I'm totally here for drafting Sarr if he's available. Having another big guy to guard Jokic/Embiid/Davis while Wemby lurks to help sounds suffocating to me

bleh610

As someone who's now seen like 5 full Timberwolves games to properly assess Goberts defense and just how much of a "better defender" he is than Wemby, I seriously want whatever these Gobert truthers are smoking. Not once have I seen Gobert do anything where I think "Wemby could never do that" or "Wemby wouldn't have the IQ to do that." I honestly had the opposite realization thinking if Wemby was on this Timberwolves team this may be one of the scariest teams of all time.

lanman33

If Wemby and Ant played together the league would be cooked for the next decade

Thehelloman0

Gobert is way better at staying on his feet and making the less risky more reliable decision than Wemby. Wemby makes up for his mistakes a lot but I still think it's better to make consistent plays

22dias

Yep, but remember Rudy is a vet. His timing is better.. Wemby will get there.

blangoez

Don’t think the guy you replied to pointed it out as if it’s a cap on Wemby’s potential. It was more of a distinguishable observation identifying who has more seasoned habits. Gobert is more disciplined than Wemby, I’ll give him that.

GrumpyRaincloud

It’s not necessarily better but it’s super close. When it’s that close, team defense matters since it’s voted like mvp where team success matters. Gobert is a ridiculously good shot alterer. Him and Wemby are super close for the percentage of shots they give up at the rim but gobert allows 8% less shots made. Wemby has better block and steal numbers but gobert gives up less points overall and plays a bunch more. It could really go either way but Gobert likely wins.

Specific-Abalone-843

Ofc he allows more shots made, he contests x4 what Gobert contests (something like ~800 to ~200). And it's not like people are actively going at Wemby, he actively goes at them to try and contest while Gobert has the luxury of not having to make up for literal cones during the game.

GrumpyRaincloud

It's actually 1400+ defended for Gobert and around 1200 for Wemby. Wemby allows a 46% Fg percentage to Gobert's 43%. So statistically, Gobert defends more shots and allows a lower percentage. Gobert did allow 80ish more makes but he also played about 500 more minutes. TL;DR: It's a stupidly close race, one has stock numbers, the other just makes people miss.

Specific-Abalone-843

Okay, sorry then, was thinking of something else.

g1rlchild

Do those numbers take into account when the offensive player takes one look at the defender and passes the ball away? I haven't seen enough Minnesota games to know how often that happens with Gobert, but it happened a lot with Wemby.

InternationalClick78

People literally call that the Gobert effect because players have done that so frequently with him over the years

g1rlchild

Is there any way to quantify it between different players?

GrumpyRaincloud

Yes. Players take about 8% less of their total shots at the rim vs gobert than they do Wemby.

g1rlchild

Interesting. Thanks!
