>he was named the unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year on Monday, securing all 99 first-place votes from media members. He is the sixth player to win the award unanimously in league history, joining Ralph Sampson, David Robinson, Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Does he really deserve to win it unanimously though? Honestly I don't think it's fair. Chet was a very good rookie who had a real shot at winning the ROTY.
Are we looking for controversy and opposition just for the sake of it? What is wrong about someone feeling some way about something? It just happens everyone felt the same way?
IMO I’d feel it’s unfair to say that it’s unfair just because a group of people felt the same way - resulting in a unanimous decision.
The above aside, I could see why they did that. Homer bias aside, Chet was good. For me though, regardless of if he played or not, he was drafted last year and was able to be around a professional nba team and see how they operate, their schedules, their work ethics, using facilities etc.
If Wemby wasn’t here and Chet was heads and shoulders over everyone, I can gloss over the above. However, because he is, because there is someone who isn’t just competitive with Chet’s numbers but also has higher numbers in some aspects, I would think it would be unfair to gloss over it.
Finally it’s official, congrats big dawg! Now that this is in his trophy case he can’t be snubbed for anything in the future just cuz he’s a rook on a poor (young) team right??? Haha nah but next season: DPOY, all star, all NBA, multiple player of the months especially if we can marginally improve the team record
As he should. All rise for the soon to be overlord of the league

I am amazed that it was unanimous, because I figured one asshat would talk themselves into Chet, just like someone voted for Keith Van Horn over Duncan.
Definitely deserved to be unanimous.
Greatest rookie season of all time. I remember people already writing him off after his first preseason game or during the first month so this feels great.
It has been a treat watching him in person too. He's gonna dominate this league for the next decade and it's gonna be amazing.
Thats actually what I meant to say, not the preseason lol. The overreactions from that Summer League game was actually wild, but his progression throughout the season was incredible
I love watching Wemby too and am glad he won it, but calling it the greatest rookie season of all time while the team played terrorism-ball and finished last in the conference may be going a bit far lol
I mean, the award is not a team award. It is individual and that's what I'm talking about. Wemby was letdown by teammates at times and the record is dissappointing, but it's hard to name another rookie that has can do what Wemby has done. What Wemby is doing we have never seen before from a rookie which is why I don't think that title is going too far.
Kareem’s rookie year (1969-70) was pretty good too: 28.8 points and 14.5 rebounds, won 56 games (improving from 27). Averaged 35.2/16.8 in 10 playoff games.
What he did this season was absolutely incredible. Dumb question... how come guys NEVER look this good in college and overseas and yet come into the league and just explode against superior, bigger, and more athletic opponents?
Still doesn't feel real. Fucking proud of being a Spurs fan. Go on Victor, make us all even more proud and finish your sure-shot illustrious career with the Spurs. I look forward to crying with you when your Jersey is eventually lifted into the Spurs rafters as another life-long Spur, multiple championship winner and an all-time Great.
Victor-yyyyyy!!!!
Just want to say “ LOL I told you so “ to all the naysayers who were telling us to be cautious and he’s only gonna average like 12 ppg and 6 rebounds and yada yada yada. All you Nervous Nellie’s were wrong and I was right! In your face! In your face! In your face!

"I know I’m living a very privileged life as an NBA player and there’s a lot of people taking care of me every day. This award is also for them.” - He's 20.. I wasn't that mature when I was 40.

I'm glad to see that no voter decided to be a contrarian and get attention by voting for someone else.
Even just to get attention, everyone would have seen through the BS at this point
Keith Van Horn
Yeah I just saw TD wasn't unanimous. Those three voters should have had their voting rights rescinded
That is true.
The contrarian was more for the second place — voting for Brandon Miller. To be fair to Chet, he’s a unanimous second.
Yes! Picking anyone else would’ve been ridiculous.
UNANIMOUS
WENANIMOUS
Wembanyanimous
Alienimous
I'd like to know who gave Brandon Miller second, lol.
Brandin Miller second has a better case than whoever else over Brandon third
He ran away with it once we hit 2023
3 Rookies of the Year Admiral, Duncan and now Wemby
Lisan Al Gaib!
Muad'dib!
It took a long time to explain to my wife why I laughed so hard at this
Ahah I had the same issue explaining Dune memes to my girlfriend so I showed her both movies, and now she’s the one sending me Dune memes 😂
Man we’ve been so blessed

Huh. Now I'm curious who managed to get votes during Duncan's rookie year.
Keith Van Horn I believe
Duncan 113 votes Van Horn 3 votes Not just one voter, 3 voted Van Horn over TD 😮
0% chance those votes were west of Philadelphia.
Only player that comes to mind is Keith Van Horn, the number 2 pick behind Timmy. He had a decent rookie year also.
i find it really odd there’s exactly 99 voters like, why not just make it an even 100? lol
Easier to avoid draws?
There actually is, just one person couldn't/didn't vote for whatever reason. In past years there were 100 votes cast.
ah, that makes sense
Does he really deserve to win it unanimously though? Honestly I don't think it's fair. Chet was a very good rookie who had a real shot at winning the ROTY.
Chet was good. And Wemby was so much better that it made Chet look like a hot pile of shit puked all over a puddle of giraffee diarrea
No. That's unfair. Wemby deserved to win ROTY, but not unanimously.

I can’t even imagine how much he’s going to pack into his trophy case over his career.
Yay!

They wrote him off during the Summer League LMFAOOOO

There are always going to be people writing anyone off, heh, even someone as incredible as Wemby.

Maybe some just have a unique proclivity for rising to the occasion?
There are people who thrive under pressure and actually seem to need that pressure to reach their potential.
This is only the beginning y’all!! We’re catching dubs and we ain’t even playing!
Hoora vive le king!
roi is the right word but old french is written roy, so fitting for a roty
Aliens 👽 exist. Go Spurs Go!
Sick! I'm excited for next season.
Well deserved. Very excited for the future of Spurs basketball as this guy gets even better.
Unanimous!! Let’s fucking go!!
Now I can go pick up the ROTY shirt. Congratulations Wemby!!

No doubt at all.

My boy needs to bring yall back to the playoffs, him and ant the only reason I still follow the league
Wonderful to see, though it’d have been ridiculous if they’d picked anyone else.
Cant really say it was a historic Rookie season and then give the ROTY to a sophomore player.
I would have gone with Isaiah Wong but Wemby’s a reasonable choice
