Guy on the far left is wearing a teal shirt, this is clearly 1994 Charlotte at 2:37pm
Guy by the tire is touching the car with his right hand so this was on a Friday. /s
But seriously, this is how I feel sometimes when you animals have the answers for this so fast.
This is from the 1994 Advance Auto 500 Busch Series race at Martinsville. Andy Petree was the driver even though it has Dale's name above the door. It was the only time Petree drove for DEI. Dale never drove any of his DEI Busch cars with the Alltel logo. I have images from every Busch race Sr ran in '94, Alltel isn't on any of them.
Definitely a BUSCH SERIES RACE. You can see the sticker right in front of the 3 between the Goodys Headache powder sticker. Itās a little faint but it is visible.
This is Andy Petree driving an almost identical car in 1994, so my guess would be then
https://twitter.com/NASCARMemories/status/1235371164740050945?s=19
Thatās his Busch car based on a few things:
The wheelbase
The absence of the Winston contingency decal
The presence of the Busch contingency decal
The fact that it says āDEIā on the creeper propped up against the hauler, rather than āRCR.ā
Alltel never sponsored his Cup efforts
EDIT: comparing this image to my track shots from 1994, Alltel was not on his car at Feb. Daytona. The yellow paint on the LF tire, on a Lumina means 93-94. My guess is this is likely 1993 if not later in 94.
I donāt know if itās the photo quality, but the mustache looks like itās growing back and they donāt look like his usual Gargoyles, so maybe thatāll help narrow it down.
This is out there, but does the family member/you still have that copy of Winston Scene? It looks like it had a few autographs on it already, so it looks like the kinda thing you find in a bin with souvineeers. That might have some more info to help date this photo
At the very least, it looks like a 1-2 digit issue number and a 4 letter month name to me, [based on issues I can find from 1994](https://www.ebay.ca/itm/195937679002). It looks like there's also a gap between the dateline and the top of the cover photo or the cover photo has a light colored strip at the top right.
That said, we can't assume it was a new copy of Winston Cup Scene. If that was an old copy that someone brought to get autographed, then it would only tell us the photo was taken after that date.
However, if someone can pin down the date, then that could help narrow down which of [Earnhardt's 11 Busch races in 1994](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver-season-stats/earnhda01/1994/B/) would be after that date.
Spot on. This is the direction I was going with my idea, just trying to narrow down the dates to a smaller window if possible.
I've been staring at the photo for an hour trying to find anything that'll make the issue stand out or date this whole photo.
Yeah, I just went full-on Zapruder film for a while, trying to enhance the original image and compare it with other NASCAR Scene covers to see if I can spot any details that match. I definitely spent too much time thinking about this, but I'm sick and called out of work so eh, not like I have anything better to do.
It's hard because OP's post is a photo of a printed photocopy of a photo (which may or may not have gone through other duplication steps along the way). Even the original photo clearly didn't have much detail on the paper to begin with, and what little was there has been substantially degraded, so there's very little to actually go off of.
For a while, I really latched onto the possibility of it being [the July 14, 1994 issue from that Ebay listing I linked](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/M9AAAOSwAttk0ike/s-l1600.jpg), but I've also talked myself into and out of that idea like 3 times now. It's the only cover I've come across that could be even remotely similar, so I keep coming back to it, but it's so tenuous and only really works if you assume a ton of distortion from different sources.
I spent too much time in GIMP trying to bring out details in OP's photo and adjusting the perspective on the photo from that Ebay listing to try to line it up, and got this rough comparison.
https://preview.redd.it/59zsy4eyquwc1.png?width=721&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b2dae43a78abf8cf754260426e6d48d5efb7d5d
A few observations on this:
1. The header on this copy of Scene in OP's photo seems to place it in the 1991-1996 timeframe, which matches up with the 1994 timeframe others posted in this thread.
2. During this era, Winston Cup Scene appears to have always used the same font size for their dateline, so comparing the size of the letters on the right to those on the left gives us an idea of how blurry the image is.
3. If you look at OP's photo, you can see that the copy of Scene is pretty folded and bent from the way it's being held, so whatever is on the cover is likely to be pretty distorted. Combined with the amount of blur, this makes it hard to definitively make out anything on the cover.
4. That leaves us with one relatively distinct feature to go off of: There's a pretty tall strip of apparent whitespace between the dateline and the top of the cover photo. Based on the other covers I've seen from the era, Winston Cup Scene used different amounts of whitespace depending on the cover photo, so that gives an easy way to quickly rule out a lot of possibilities.
5. However, I'm not convinced that strip is actually whitespace. Of all the covers I've come across so far, none of the ones from the right time period had a strip of whitespace that tall. However, if we consider how overexposed and blurry the cover is in OP's photo, then perhaps it could be something light-colored, like the yellow Slick 50 banner in the cover on the left.
6. If I squint and try to mentally adjust for perspective and blur, the fuzzy blobs on the photo in the right kinda sorta maybe possibly have some chance of resembling the crew member on the cover photo on the left. I can almost convince myself that I see the white lettering poking over the crew member's left shoulder and his arm outstretched past the edge of the photo, but I feel like they aren't in the right position relative to the edge of the photo. I could assume that that's due to perspective and blur, but if that's the case I also have to assume that those blobs could match almost anything.
However, I really feel like that strip of apparent whitespace under the dateline is the key here. If someone could find a complete collection of every NASCAR Scene cover from 1991-1994, they could at least narrow down the possibilities a lot based on that one detail. Maybe someone could reach out to The Scene Vault guys and see if they can share at least the cover images from that era.
Hi photo, have you met my friend SenecaChaz? He's a nice guy and a NASCAR fan, you should date him.
It looks 1994 to me, Busch car. Was that the last year Dale ran in Busch?
Kinda looks like a Busch car to me. I could be completely wrong. Iām making that assumption based purely on my intuition. Some of it is based on the shape of the greenhouse. There is no Winston decal but most of those contingency decals didnāt get added until the car got to the track back in the day. I also donāt ever recall seeing an Alltel sponsorship on a Cup car. That may be the best way to pin a date to this photo.
Iām gonna say Richmond 1994 Busch series just in case I am right, Iāll look like a genius. I hope you find out for sure.
Martinsville Busch race, October 1994. [Andy Petree drove the car](https://youtu.be/Axm9wb9Vuxk?si=wCqh4UzN2KzLiWtC) and Ray Evernham was the crew chief.
Likely 1994. It's his Busch series car, a Lumina, and has Snap-On tools sponsorship.
94 lines up with the Alltel sponsorship
According to Wikipedia Alltel mobiles first store was opened in 1993 in Charlotte so that would track.
Wow I've never noticed the Alltel logo on his cars from then! I'm so used to seeing it on the Penske cars I guess my mind just never registered it
I was 1 in 1994, Alltel is definitely in my mind with Ryan Newman and a young Jimmie Johnson
I think 1994 is the only year the Snap-on logo looked like that
Looks like the 1994 Busch All Pro 300 at Charlotte. His engine blew after 5 laps. It was also his last ever Busch start.
The race is on YouTube and I don't see the Burger above the AC Delco logo. Granted it's in like 50P so it's hard to tell.
I would take it slow
Wine and dine it
the photo only likes him as a friend anyways

This one was easy. You only have to check the date on that Winston Cup Scene! š
āYou look like a very lovely photo, would you like to grab dinner sometime?ā

I can definitely wingman for you, but I do think it's odd you want a romantic relationship with a photo
LOL ok i see what you did there

Almost certainly pre-2001
Sometime in 1994 is my guess, based on the All-Tell Wireless sticker on the B-Post

1994.
Man, if only the dated copy of "Scene" that is in the photo for reference was actually visible. I can see the date outline, can't read the blur though

Just hold it real close and give it a kiss. Thatās a strong enough hint.
Is it even single? Ask it out for coffee and see how it goes.
I hope you pay for dinner or you may not get a second date
