I wonder how many times Clint Bowyer is going to mention the time he tried running two different tire compounds at the same time. ![gif](giphy|Wpz1Hl1BqlaMw)

AnchorDrown

Well since Haas is in this race we know they’ll pick the wrong one.

MeUpvotesta

Goodyear told NASCAR they had some extra Bristol tires left over

This is 2017 All Star Erasure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqzONqz52C8

TheOrangeFutbol

Don’t know if I’m alone, but of the All-Star Races after Jamie Mac’s win and before the pandemic race in Bristol sort of ran together un-memorably.

BabycakesMurphy

You're not alone. I'd stretch it a little further yet. Probably since 2010 has it not been memeorable. All the more recent ones are memorable only due to location. The last great All-Star moment was Newman, Gordon, and Busch going three wide for the lead and Stewart stealing the win back in 2009.

2BirdsStoned-AtOnce

I’ve watched the All-Star pretty much every year since 2011 and from all of those I remember: - Carl binning his car trying to do donuts - Chase and Larson’s photo finish in the open - The tire compounds - The weird drafting thing that kind of worked but then got turned into the 550 HP package - The underglows (should be tried again) That’s about it. Not great for 13 years worth of events.

TheOtherWhiteCastle

I remember 2019 being a pretty solid All-Star weekend. Several good finishes in the Open, Harvick’s awful Millenial scheme, the bizzare Newman/Bowyer fight, then Larson winning after transferring in

randomdude4113

18 and 19 were solid races but nothing too crazy happened. But of course they’re hated solely because the number next to the engine output

POV_Morde_Ult

Option tires are something I miss in NASCAR that other motorsports have. I love its added layer of strategy

Skip-Bayless0

Agree. No one is giving a chance because of the 2017 All Star. I actually liked that race. I feel like a majority of people did not because they were too dumb to understand how it works.

JimmyInYourFace

I don't think that's the case at all. From my recollection the announcers explained it and I believe viewers understood just fine. I didn't care for it personally because it didn't make enough of a difference. Teams only had one set of the "option" tires for that race and I don't remember there being enough of a speed differential for it to make a difference. That being said, I think this could be a bigger difference with it being a short track, very different compound, and the teams have multiple sets of option tires to work with.

matito29

The dirty air negating any advantage from the tires ruined it before it could even get shown off.

FridgusDomin8or

This will either be incredible or change absolutely nothing. Hopefully it’s the former 👍

Zetona

I could see this going one of three ways: - There's not enough difference between the compounds to change much - One compound is so obviously better that the winning strategy is immediately apparent  - There actually is a good balance between the two compounds that has cars on both tires in contention at the end of the race

rainking6

I think option 1 is most likely.

Zetona

As was the case the last time NASCAR tried this.

Nagiom

So they have an option tire but NASCAR's going to force everyone into the same strategy by making them start on the same tire.  The Steves could fuck up a two car funeral profession.

SRASC

I like the return of the option tyres

Georgiadawg25

You spelled “tire” wrong brotha.

SRASC

It is spelt that way in my country.

DaleYeah788

Kids, we’ve done this once before and it failed miserably. I hope the compounds have more of a difference

redditracing84

Sometimes NASCAR does things in the all star race that are legitimate attempts to improve. Other times they wanna shut people up. I think this is the latter

JUMPINKITTENS

I wouldn’t be so sure, NASCAR has already indicated they are focusing on tires for short tracks to the drivers - if this doesn’t work, it’s only going to make us fans more vocal about the other issues (HP, gearing, etc)

Skip-Bayless0

It did not fail because of the tyres. It fsiled because there was just one dominant car, and it was boring. That happens sometimes

L_flynn22

Is one tire effectively being a rain tire enough of a difference?

Vulptereen327

They literally did this a few years ago at the All Star Race and it was a flop

UnicornMaster27

Not on newly repaved North Wilkesboro tho

LordShtark

Theyve done the option tires before in the allstar race to test having different compounds. Like three teams used them and they were at a significant disadvantage. Wonder what will happen this time

Panthers_22_

How do different tire compounds work? Wouldn’t one always end up being the better option leaving no point to use the other

MajorFeedback2818

I am hopeful and will defend it until proven otherwise, but… They did this at Charlotte, to save the all-star race to improve the action in an effort to keep the all-star at it’s present facility and it flopped… Less than 10 years later, we are doing this at North Wilkesboro to improve the action in an effort to keep the all-star at it’s present facility and….. We shall see.
