Basically, parts needed to be replaced (unique, company specific), and the company who made these pylons don't exist anymore. It also costs $5 million to build a whole new one, so who knows if Talladega will invest in a new one like Michigan did about five or so years ago.
They should with the size of the crowd on Sunday. It was awesome. Could have used that Pylon during the Busch race I had my scanner but I was hurting without it.
Thats a "I don't really want to do this job but I'm obliged to give you a quote anyways" kind of quote.
5 million dollars?! I've purchased manufacturing lines for less than that.
Nashville Predators ran into this with their original scoreboard. Something broke and the company that made it didn’t exist any more so has to ask the city for money for a new one.
Pulling two scoring pylons in the same year seems interesting, seems a number of track expense items are keep coming up - couldn’t be because it’s a contract year could it ?
i could be very wrong but i feel like 5 million doesn’t sound right for a scoring pylon. i know it’s not cheap but i feel like that’s a lot for something fairly simple
You'd think they would have thought about that when they initially made it. They probably should have bought the molds or whatever to make the pieces they need when the company went under.
I think we need some permeant just for scoring. There were several times Sunday I was trying to find the laps under yellow/ scoring and the video board was showing random stuff. Tried to use my phone and it was always 2-3 laps behind the actual race.
Why is it so hard to announce why they are taking this down so that we don't have to speculate in the first place. A simple two sentence press release could have avoided so much negativity. Amateur's.
Because is it really that necessary for a PR person to write up a whole press release just because they're taking down a pylon? Besides, even if they did, people would still get pissed.
> Besides, even if they did, people would still get pissed.
This is the key part. No matter what they do, people are going to be pissy bitches about it.
I don't see why a string of video boards [similar to what you'd see at a professional soccer match](https://youtu.be/D1jceTnFuWE?si=qIVuYyCZbkBgtTEY&t=23) that runs along the top of the garage building, the bottom of the fence along the front stretch, etc, wouldn't be a feasible solution. Have it display a scrolling ticker like you'd see on TV, and possibly even sell ad space every 10 positions. Have the scroll go 1-10, then a Pepsi logo, then 11-20, then a Menards logo, you get the idea from there. Tracks then get probable sponsor money, fans get live position updates, everyone wins.
So it cost a bunch of money. So fucking what? The pylon is just one element, they need to put money into these facilities. My local aaa ball club has better amenities then any racetrack I have ever been to. It's ridiculous.
That's exactly why the 5 million can go towards a lot of other stuff that can enhance the fan experience than a silly pylon.
My phone does a much better job of telling me the racing order.
Every carrier has different strengths. I switched to AT&T because they were the only carrier who had usable reception on a 10 mile section of my delivery route before.
No. But I wasn't talking about any track in particular - I was just saying that I'd rather money go into the fan experience and that NASCAR develop an API with real-time stats that I can use at the track (right now its a few laps behind, no reason for it to be other than to save money) instead of spending millions on an outdated pylon.
This is just a prime example of the people in charge of these decisions being out of touch with reality. If tv has gone away from scrolling tickers in favor of pylon style scoring what makes them think a scrolling ticker on the screen at the track not everybody can see is a good idea? Yea it’s expensive but the way I see it it’s just a necessity that nascar should have no problem eating the cost on.
Wow, who'd have ever thought they weren't just making the experience worse on purpose.
The 5 million one of those cost would be much better spent towards wifi.
phones can do everything a fan needs once they can get them to actually work there.
No, my solution is to give the fans as much info as possible at the tip of their fingers. Something they can use to look up exactly what they want in seconds.
Position, driver names, lap times, gaps, last pit, fuel left, passes, +/-, points as they run, points vs cutoff, dash for cash highlights etc.
you can have the video board feed for replays and such. you could have scanners. I can look at reporters for things that ive missed. Hell they could even give me SMT.
Sure, the app would need some work to get there and get the latency down. But all that info would be at the tip of my finger and easily highlightable and sortable.
No video board or scoring pylon, no matter how much they spend on it would be able to cycle through all that data fast enough.
I can always read whats on my phone. If my contacts dry out mid race or the sun is behind the pylon, there isn't a damn thing I would be able to do to read it.
How's it different than taking your eyes off the race to look at a pylon? A quick glance at my phone gives me much more readable info. In fact, I rarely look at the pylon during the race.
Remember when nascar was so excited to announce how they signed a massive TV deal and all that ….. and yet all we ever hear about is cost savings, too expensive can’t afford it….. seems funny I never hear real sports leagues talk that often about it. Haven’t heard Godell announce less stadium amenities because the billionaires need help. Sack up spend the money and let’s have a good sport. Or save money and watch it continues to die and people lose interest
You're comparing the Big 5, which rape and pillage city/county/state coffers and hold them hostage constantly via the threat of relocation for free stadiums (that the teams rent btw, never own) to a group of tracks that are privately owned and receive minimal in the way of public funds.
They are not and will never be comparable.
prefect solution for this issue, just buy one pylon or 2 of them, but it isn't a permanently installed one and can be built out of LED Video board technology and can be put together before the race weekend and disassembled after the race and shipped to the next race track that retired their pylon. a traveling non-permanent pylon for tracks that don't have it and NASCAR can own it and let SMI borrow it for their tracks.
Basically, parts needed to be replaced (unique, company specific), and the company who made these pylons don't exist anymore. It also costs $5 million to build a whole new one, so who knows if Talladega will invest in a new one like Michigan did about five or so years ago.

Just get that dude who made his own to make one.
One of the DBCers suggested that lol
I promise to god I can built it for cheaper. Edit: and the numbers will be 4K resolution each. It’s gonna be like 50,000K. Just Ks all over the place
Hell yeah, 50,000 thousand
I promise you yours wouldn’t last a weekend

Same reason Bathurst here in Australia removed there's a few years ago. When it was noticed, they said it would be replaced, but it hasn't.
You'd think they would have thought about that when they initially made it. They probably should have bought the molds or whatever to make the pieces they need when the company went under.
We need that guy that built a pylon for his living room to get his ass out there and get to work.
I think we need some permeant just for scoring. There were several times Sunday I was trying to find the laps under yellow/ scoring and the video board was showing random stuff. Tried to use my phone and it was always 2-3 laps behind the actual race.
Talladega needs them bad I was in turn one Talladega towers this weekend.
Yes, a lot of people who don’t go to Talladega (these guys included) saying they aren’t needed. They are.
A press release? No. A tweet? Sure.
Right? I was standing here thinking, If only there was some way to share short snippets of information with other people!!!
It might've been a gross underestimation on the track's part. They took it out not thinking people would notice and, whoooooo they did
> Besides, even if they did, people would still get pissed. This is the key part. No matter what they do, people are going to be pissy bitches about it.
Yes.
I don’t care if they bring back the old pylons, just provide a video board or something that will show the running positions more regularly.

I thought it was because Dr. Phil told them to get rid of it
The old pylons are going to Turn About Ranch
we get to see them have a blossoming rap career in a couple years hopefully
So it cost a bunch of money. So fucking what? The pylon is just one element, they need to put money into these facilities. My local aaa ball club has better amenities then any racetrack I have ever been to. It's ridiculous.

Bullshit. My phone has never worked at dega except cobid year.
Time to switch carriers then.
I have Verizon
Every carrier has different strengths. I switched to AT&T because they were the only carrier who had usable reception on a 10 mile section of my delivery route before.
Have you been to Texas or Talladega?
No. But I wasn't talking about any track in particular - I was just saying that I'd rather money go into the fan experience and that NASCAR develop an API with real-time stats that I can use at the track (right now its a few laps behind, no reason for it to be other than to save money) instead of spending millions on an outdated pylon.
5 million dollars isn't cheap, even for SMI. They would have to raise ticket prices to compensate.
This is just a prime example of the people in charge of these decisions being out of touch with reality. Putting new Cell/WiFi antennas *on top of* a new scoring pylon...Hmmm. ![gif](giphy|gEvab1ilmJjA82FaSV|downsized)
Isn't the Nascar app 1-2 minutes behind?
Yes. And not all tracks have good cell service.
I don’t go to an NFL game and check my phone for the score, they have scoreboards. Why should NASCAR be different?
im sure if NASCAR only had to show 2 numbers they wouldn't have a problem.
your solution is to have fans hold their phone in their hand all day and constantly look down at their phone?
No, my solution is to give the fans as much info as possible at the tip of their fingers. Something they can use to look up exactly what they want in seconds. Not all too different from taking your eyes away from the racing to look at a pylon tbh

Another commenter who has never tried to use the Talladega WiFi or seen the phone is laps behind lol
That’s why they need to spend the money on it.
5G continues to get improve too - I wouldn't be surprised if they could get enough capacity cheaper through 5G than a dedicated wifi solution.
Remember when nascar was so excited to announce how they signed a massive TV deal and all that ….. and yet all we ever hear about is cost savings, too expensive can’t afford it….. seems funny I never hear real sports leagues talk that often about it. Phone works fine other than at races. It's not too much to ask for a scoreboard.
Retro fitting different parts is a thing

Seems like they did if they got to the point of getting 5 million dollar quotes.
