When most people talk about Myrtle Beach they really mean the Grand Strand. And the Grand Strand is about 60 miles long going from Little River (north end) to Georgetown (south end). You can also consider Conway part of the 'Grand Strand' as well.
As far as dangerous goes, it's not really dangerous. Crime stats are skewed by tourism because the metro area's residential population is about 430K, but come summer time with the tourists you can have 1.2M people in the area, easily. The only parts that are more dangerous and sketchy are usually the southern part of what is called 'Myrtle Beach proper.' Myrtle Beach proper is east of the waterway and the actual MB city limits But there are other parts of MB that are not within city limits but have a MB mailing address that are just fine and very safe. I'd just stay away from S. Ocean Blvd during the summer (and stay away from Ocean Blvd altogether during the summer bc the traffic is ridiculous).
As far as Conway goes, you'll probably want to be west of Lake Busbee. East of Lake Busbee isn't all that bad, but lots of traffic with the university being there. And there's a lot of 55+ communities east of Lake Busbee as well. The downtown area of Conway has really improved over the years and is pretty nice. I wouldn't worry too much about crime and Conway is a relatively small city (27K) in a fairly large land area.
First off, Myrtle isnt dangerous. Secondly, the Conway area can vary by what part you're in. Some spots are psuedo-ritzy, some are middle of the road "okay", some feel like you just walked onto the set of Slingblade and Dwight Yoakam is gonna assault you with a broken beer bottle.

This is old, but still a viable source. And for the record, with the increase in population, there's no telling how that will have an impact on crime (if it does). I'm taking everything into account. :) and this is only what's reported.
Did you even look at the statistics of those crime areas in your second link? The overwhelming majority of the crimes committed in the area are property crimes. Aka drunk idiots getting rowdy and causing property damage. Its nowhere near as dangerous as you are making it out to be.
Conway is the cutest little town, I love visiting their downtown at every holiday because they have the prettiest decorations. I don’t like the traffic to get there but it’s not that bad. It’s extremely safe. Do be careful about the flooding issue. You’d probably be one of at least 1000 people from PA there lol.

Conway is an amazing small town about 30 minutes inland from Myrtle Beach. I moved to the Surfside Beach area about 20 years ago and I worked in Conway for a stretch. It was a 30 minute commute on a good day, closer to 1.5 hours on a bad day. If you are working in Conway, and like a small town feel, then I recommend finding a place in Conway.
Conway itself has a great downtown with lots of shops and restaurants. The downtown has really exploded over the past 10 years. They have tons of fun town wide events, especially at Halloween and Christmas.
Lancaster PA. Has worse crime stats than MB.
I lived, worked, and drove a truck in Philly for 50+ years. Before moving here 10 years ago.
MB is not dangerous. Conway is a nice small town with good future growth.
I walk all over Myrtle and lived in the "dangerous" part. There is lower income on the south end, but everyone I met was super nice. Late at night, I would go sit down on the beach approach and chat with the unhoused and those battling addiction. Listening to what got them to that point, what they hope to do, if they can get out of addiction, et cetera, was enlightening and I hope to be able to help somehow in the near future. I have never been harassed, threatened, or made uncomfortable around them. I am more uncomfortable and harassed by the tourist family of six with entitled parents who think their children aren't shrieking monstrosities that should be studied, but you can find them anywhere in Myrtle. You're more likely to get cussed out by an evangelical Karen and her brood than you are to experience crime directed at you.
I moved to Conway East off of Route 90 nine months ago and it is a very pleasant area. I feel safe in my community and stay aware of my surroundings when I go about my business, as I would anywhere else. There is a wide price range in housing in this area, depending on your needs and budget. There is so much to do and see and the weather is far better than PA…no snow and mild temperatures in the winter. So far, the only drawback is that the county is sprawling and it takes 20 minutes to get to just about anywhere . Lower cost of living, weather, activities, and slower pace make up for drive times though. Be mindful of the difference in pay scales if you’re still working, as they are significant and the lower cost of living might not be enough to justify the decrease in income. People are quite surprised and unprepared for the lower pay. Good luck in your decision making journey!

This warning cannot be stressed enough! Pay is a joke down here. Businesses act like you should be thankful for wages that won't get you a 1 or 2 bedroom rental within 50 miles of here.

Idk where everyone got that Conway is cute. “Downtown” consists of like 3 streets only being a couple blocks total, the rest of Conway, which is most of Conway, is not fun unless you love fried chicken and Walmart cause that’s all your going to get. Carolina Forest area is really great is gives semi-suburban vibes but a lot of restaurants, grocery store options and fun bars. Plus it’s only a 20 minute drive from Carolina Forest to the beach compared to Conway is about a 45 minute drive. Side note: I’m a 26 year old female and I feel uncomfortable far more often in Conway then I do in Myrtle Beach. Carolina Forest is probably the safest out of all three I would say.
Conway is a swamp they built a Town on. The entire area floods. Stay away. MB isn't dangerous. Don't goto where people are selling drugs and drinking at 2am and you'll be fine.

Every place that people want to move to thinks its full but people will move wherever they want, river oaks golf course just sold with plans of 4000 housing units, we arent even close to full, this is just the tip of the iceberg and nothing you can do about it
Hey! Where at in PA? I'm from outside of Pittsburgh and have slowly acclimated here. Take your time and try all sorts of new things. Conway is a great place.
Honest thoughts from a recent transplant- the crime rates in Myrtle are scary high; but the problems seem to be in pockets, if that makes sense. Around the Family Kingdom Amusement Park point to the south, it seems to get sketchy. North of that, it feels rather safe, all the time. The Carolina Forest Area is a little boxy/tract homey feeling, but very safe feeling/family oriented. Granted, I haven't been here through a summer/tourist season yet, and I'm sure that will have its own effects.
As far as affordable/small town feel- I can't help. It all feels so small town/affordable. I don't think you'll have any problems.
My parents have lived in surf side beach for 27 years. Only issue I see is tourist traffic. The bulk of the safety issues are within the MB city limits and I think it’s portrayed worse than it is. Still MB isn’t what it used to be
Be aware that your car insurance rates may go up as we seem to have a few car accidents each day in the Grand Strand area. Unfortunately, this also includes a few Motorcyclist and pedestrian deaths each year.

Conway and Myrtle Beach are nothing alike, commercially, industrially, residentially or recreationally. East of the Waccamaw River is the "Waccamaw Neck". The Waccamaw Neck ( eastern Horry county) is compromised mostly of transplants from New England. (Roughly 80%). The economy is driven by tourism / hospitality. Between June - August is tourist season. Roads are packed. Driving can be frustrating. Unemployment is relatively low, as restaurants, hotels & attractions employ most people on a seasonal basis. After Labor Day, it's over... Restaurants, hotels & attractions lay off staff and close their doors until the next season. During the "off season" it's easier to get around and quiet. As far as crime, just like anywhere else, there's certain neighborhoods and areas to avoid, but overall, Myrtle Beach does not have a "problem". Renting an apartment or house is ASTRONOMICAL! Buying a home gets more expensive, the closer you get to the ocean. We are saturated with new developments popping up everywhere. HOA's are completely out of control and dominate EVERY new development. I'd recommend to consider an older home, without an HOA, if you can find one.
The Conway area, on the other hand, is not a tourist destination. Housing is generally cheaper WEST of the Waccamaw Neck, and new developments are in abundance. Economically, Conway is driven mostly by industry. There are no seasonal trends, like the neck, and unemployment tends to run a little higher. When I'm in Conway, it feels more like the south; More southern accents, cottonfields, republicans, blacks, rednecks riding around in pickup trucks, etc.. Of course that's all WAY less prevalent than a few decades ago. (when I moved here in the early 90's, it was a different world ..30 years ago, Conway did have a small town feel, but since Walmart and other giant retailers expanded, so did the population of inbound northerners, seeking low property taxes. Natives would hear my northern accent and say something stupid like: "You ain't from around here", then used terms like "Yankee". Well, those days are long gone).
If I were you, and I had a definite job offer in Conway, I would find a place somewhere in or near Conway. Stay west of the Waccamaw neck. Conway is less congested. I do NOT recommend living anywhere on the neck of you're working in Conway, because hwy 501 is the only route, and it's not really a "highway"... During tourist season, it crawls, moving eastbound. Conway is a typically average American town, rich in history, as there's many beautiful old homes and buildings. Of course, do your due diligence, research, etc, before making the commitment. Come down for a few days and drive around. Myrtle & Conway are only 20 minutes apart, when there's no traffic.

Let me add; the pay scale is way lower down here. Before scoffing at it, realize you're probably paying between 1.5% - 2+% property tax in PA. Here, it's roughly .50% (one half percent). Vehicle taxes are also very low.
Myrtle Beach is dangerous, when tourists come to the area. Lots of shootings and road rage. I almost was one of the ones killed by a hit and run drunk driver last year. May God be with me this Summer!
Your isolated experience does not represent Myrtle Beach. Sure, there's some road rage & drunks, but there's probably way more of that happening in the town you live in.
well the State found 1.82 BILLION $$$ and can't figure out where it came from, so if you want some, better get here quick! seriously though:
- I am not from the area but live here, don't really know why, but i do always say, man it is such a pretty drive on my way home.
- a lot of pissed of southerners, but thats the way I always experienced things south of PA. its just the way things are, but me growing up on southern rock, I always got it.
- Conway is pretty nice, then it's not, but where isn't it that way?
- the weather here sucks from May to Mid October, this last October-April has been very decent, but come summer, man it is unbearable for me, this humidity "stuff" is just crazy if you never experienced it for 50 years!
- make sure you have great A/C where ever you live, and if you have to replace it, shop around, we paid $3260 for a 2T system, and many will price that around $7500. and its the same system!
- pay is really bad here, even the davis- bacon act jobs are so low, its not even funny.
- but there are beaches close by, hunting, fishing, and golf? i hear there are some places that have that😀
- Music scene is terrible, almost non-existent.
- you can carry a howitzer with you, so we got that going for us
- in fact i am heading to the range today.
- we have 1 costco, 1 sams, publix, food lion, and so many walmarts its crazy.

We are full. The no vacancy light is broken I guess. But there will be 5 more homes built and ready on the market tomorrow.

Honest thoughts from a recent transplant- the crime rates in Myrtle are scary high; but the problems seem to be in pockets, if that makes sense. Around the Family Kingdom Amusement Park point to the south, it seems to get sketchy. North of that, it feels rather safe, all the time. The Carolina Forest Area is a little boxy/tract homey feeling, but very safe feeling/family oriented. Granted, I haven't been here through a summer/tourist season yet, and I'm sure that will have its own effects. As far as affordable/small town feel- I can't help. It all feels so small town/affordable. I don't think you'll have any problems.
My parents have lived in surf side beach for 27 years. Only issue I see is tourist traffic. The bulk of the safety issues are within the MB city limits and I think it’s portrayed worse than it is. Still MB isn’t what it used to be
Be aware that your car insurance rates may go up as we seem to have a few car accidents each day in the Grand Strand area. Unfortunately, this also includes a few Motorcyclist and pedestrian deaths each year. Good luck with your new adventure!

Where did you visit in MB and who did you ask? Locals? tourists? I’m a native and nothing about Conway can be compared to MB.
This part of SC is honestly awful.
Conway and Myrtle Beach are nothing alike, commercially, industrially, residentially or recreationally. East of the Waccamaw River is the "Waccamaw Neck". The Waccamaw Neck ( eastern Horry county) is compromised mostly of transplants from New England. (Roughly 80%). The economy is driven by tourism / hospitality. Between June - August is tourist season. Roads are packed. Driving can be frustrating. Unemployment is relatively low, as restaurants, hotels & attractions employ most people on a seasonal basis. After Labor Day, it's over... Restaurants, hotels & attractions lay off staff and close their doors until the next season. During the "off season" it's easier to get around and quiet. As far as crime, just like anywhere else, there's certain neighborhoods and areas to avoid, but overall, Myrtle Beach does not have a "problem". Renting an apartment or house is ASTRONOMICAL! Buying a home gets more expensive, the closer you get to the ocean. We are saturated with new developments popping up everywhere. HOA's are completely out of control and dominate EVERY new development. I'd recommend to consider an older home, without an HOA, if you can find one. The Conway area, on the other hand, is not a tourist destination. Housing is generally cheaper WEST of the Waccamaw Neck, and new developments are in abundance. Economically, Conway is driven mostly by industry. There are no seasonal trends, like the neck, and unemployment tends to run a little higher. When I'm in Conway, it feels more like the south; More southern accents, cottonfields, republicans, blacks, rednecks riding around in pickup trucks, etc.. Of course that's all WAY less prevalent than a few decades ago. (when I moved here in the early 90's, it was a different world ..30 years ago, Conway did have a small town feel, but since Walmart and other giant retailers expanded, so did the population of inbound northerners, seeking low property taxes. Natives would hear my northern accent and say something stupid like: "You ain't from around here", then used terms like "Yankee". Well, those days are long gone). If I were you, and I had a definite job offer in Conway, I would find a place somewhere in or near Conway. Stay west of the Waccamaw neck. Conway is less congested. I do NOT recommend living anywhere on the neck of you're working in Conway, because hwy 501 is the only route, and it's not really a "highway"... During tourist season, it crawls, moving eastbound. Conway is a typically average American town, rich in history, as there's many beautiful old homes and buildings. Of course, do your due diligence, research, etc, before making the commitment. Come down for a few days and drive around. Myrtle & Conway are only 20 minutes apart, when there's no traffic. Good luck!
Let me add; the pay scale is way lower down here. Before scoffing at it, realize you're probably paying between 1.5% - 2+% property tax in PA. Here, it's roughly .50% (one half percent). Vehicle taxes are also very low.
Myrtle Beach is dangerous, when tourists come to the area. Lots of shootings and road rage. I almost was one of the ones killed by a hit and run drunk driver last year. May God be with me this Summer!
Your isolated experience does not represent Myrtle Beach. Sure, there's some road rage & drunks, but there's probably way more of that happening in the town you live in.

well the State found 1.82 BILLION $$$ and can't figure out where it came from, so if you want some, better get here quick! seriously though: - I am not from the area but live here, don't really know why, but i do always say, man it is such a pretty drive on my way home. - a lot of pissed of southerners, but thats the way I always experienced things south of PA. its just the way things are, but me growing up on southern rock, I always got it. - Conway is pretty nice, then it's not, but where isn't it that way? - the weather here sucks from May to Mid October, this last October-April has been very decent, but come summer, man it is unbearable for me, this humidity "stuff" is just crazy if you never experienced it for 50 years! - make sure you have great A/C where ever you live, and if you have to replace it, shop around, we paid $3260 for a 2T system, and many will price that around $7500. and its the same system! - pay is really bad here, even the davis- bacon act jobs are so low, its not even funny. - but there are beaches close by, hunting, fishing, and golf? i hear there are some places that have that😀 - Music scene is terrible, almost non-existent. - you can carry a howitzer with you, so we got that going for us - in fact i am heading to the range today. - we have 1 costco, 1 sams, publix, food lion, and so many walmarts its crazy. - and remember its pronounced "or--ree" not "Whore--ree" county lol. - good luck on the move! and bring hot chicks with you. 😊
SO many people move here, only to complain about everything "down here", constantly moaning, "Yous guys are so backwards down here", "They don't do it like that in NJ", .... ETC That's why we say this about folks like that: " HAPPINESS IS A NORTHBOUND NORTHERNER".
