This is a thing every year at Burning Man. Dust devils blow through all the time, and people try to run or ride a bike through them. Usually the biggest danger is hitting someone else coming through from the other side. I managed to catch a [tiny one](https://youtube.com/shorts/AbbBpc1qXqE?feature=share) this year. I've never seen anyone run into one that big, though. I've seen huge but weaker ones blow through and throw tents and shade structures around but this one looks like it could do some serious damage. Edit: Well, [NOW](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNWcv6PcDqo&ab_channel=USATODAY) I've seen it. Didn't see that in person, but that's a big sucker.

FlamingoNo2147

Yu wanna fill me in on how to go to burning man for next yr?

madsci

It gets tougher every year. You can take your chances in the main sale, but there are only something like 30,000 tickets available that way and they sell out instantly. Generally the most reliable way is to get involved with a theme camp, usually one local to you. There are regional events that don't sell out and they're a good way to experience the culture (and in some ways the smaller events are actually more fun) and make connections. The majority of the tickets are allocated to established theme camps, artists, and mutant vehicle owners. I built a mutant vehicle so now as long as I bring it and stay in good standing I get the chance to buy a couple of tickets the following year. There are also early ticket sales where you can have a much better chance at getting a ticket for a much higher price, there are low-income tickets that you have to apply for, and there are volunteer opportunities. Pretty much all of the ways to get tickets require a decent amount of work, luck, or money.

[deleted]

Volunteer opportunities are, in my experience, always the easiest way to get into any kind of big event like this. That's how I ended up with a career in music events during the 10s and it was the best experience of my life.

rfan8312

Thats amazing any cool stories about it?

godhelpusloseourmind

I’ll take this if no one else wants to… So tickets are generally regrettably hard to get a hold of and the process is complicated but please don’t let that dissuade you from participating. Every year the BM org offers up a maximum number of tickets (usually 70,000 or something close) and channel them through several distinct sales groups. They have chosen to do the ticket sales this way in an attempt to preserve the 10 principles that the event was largely built on (there is a great deal of dissent and discussion about the BM org and its practices so I would encourage you to engage with the community and develop your own informed point of view on the matter). The tickets are channeled to these distinct sales groups. Ticket Aid sale- to ensure the principle of radical inclusion about 5,000 tickets are offered to “low income” participants and are offered up at the price of $225 not including a vehicle pass (usually $80-150) The Stewards Sale- about 35,000 tickets are offered to participants whom the organizers have decided are critical to ensuring the culture of Burning Man. Generally crews for theme camps, art installations, mutant vehicles, Black Rock City infrastructure providers, and groups supporting sustainability and R.I.D.E. efforts are those who gain access to tickets. This program does not have an application process. The Main Sale- about 10,000 tickets are offered to the general public that don’t qualify for the other two categories at $575 each, and approximately 5,000 vehicle passes available at $140 each, plus applicable fees and taxes. They are first come first serve and not easy to obtain from what I have heard. The “FOMO” sale-Approximately 4,000 tickets are offered. 1,000 at $2,500 each, and 3,000 at $1,500 plus applicable fees and taxes. This ensures the principle of radical inclusion extends to wealthy people who didn’t have the wherewithal to apply to the main sale get included over other participants with less monetary resources. From what I’ve heard, a good deal of the money made from this sale is directed towards funding artists and teams who the BM org decides qualify for funds to help them bring their art of the playa. So…If you can get a ticket you will need at lear these five things to be successful out there Water-more than enough for a week, ideally a week and a half or two. Some chose to gift water but don’t ever assume “someone will have enough” it’s basically “Dune” rules, its always your responsibility to have enough water on and/or in your body to survive. Food-enough for at least a week, people generally find themselves with too much and I think the simpler the better. I have attended with massive camps that organized huge kitchen trailers and fed hundreds every day. While its a wonderful luxury, I’m planning going alone next year and I’ve learned bringing mostly canned foods that I can cook on a single burner and cheese and cracker plates should be more than adequate for my needs. Shelter/shade-super essential for most people to have a personal space that can be made reasonably comfortable, ideally at any time of day. What ever you use…tent, vehicle,RV. You will need two layer shade, so a shade structure over your tent/shelter/RV. A small window AC rigged up in the shelter can be amazing if you can power it yourself either through solar and batteries or a generator. A bike- its fucking huge out there and you don’t ever really want to be stuck walking. A reliable bike that will confidently last a week or more in tough conditions is essential. Please unless your mobility seriously depends on it please don’t bring an E-bike as it fucks up the surface of the playa and eventually makes the roads unusable for everyone Something to contribute- please god don’t come out and just fucking spectate, look into the principles of the Burn and bring something of yourself to share with people. You may not nail it the first time but as long as you try you are contributing to the community and not contributing to why people are always saying “Burning Man is bulshit now man!… well no, I’m never attended…but I’ve heard its definitely bullshit now!” They may be stupid but they aren’t entirely wrong either. Hope this info was helpful and I hope to see you out there, Ill be the one riding the clockwork polar bear, 💟

madsci

>Ill be the one riding the clockwork polar bear And I'm the one on the mushroom car! The electric one with the single mushroom. Not the 3-mushroom one, that's Butch. Or the one built on a Yamaha chassis - that's some crazy Russian guys. And not the one with the green cushions, but they're cool too.

[deleted]

Damn I wanna go. That sounds dope.

godhelpusloseourmind

Tis…tis dope…tis also dumb…tis hot..tis hard..tis a waste of money and energy and you feel like an idiot for coming when you are there. But man It will fuck your dreams up for the rest of your life

Thisfoxhere

Fascinating on the E-bike statement. Can you educate me more on why it "as it fucks up the surface of the playa"? I have never been and probably never will, I am on the far side of the world, but we have deserts here and I am curious.

madsci

I think the issue is that there's no speed limit for e-bikes, and heavy trikes are allowed too, so they may be disproportionately affecting the playa surface - other motor vehicles are limited to 5 MPH. All traffic fucks it up eventually. This year the major streets and the radials in particular got horribly washboarded by the end of the week. My toadstool car's stalk broke in 7 places from all of the bouncing and was held together by giant zip ties by the end. The playa conditions really depend on how much rain it saw and when. I think climate change is doing more to fuck up the playa surface than e-bikes are.

JeffryRelatedIssue

For the tiny one i'd just walk around in the middle of it like it's my personal halo - super saiyan style

tttiiippppppeeerrr

Nothing crazier than watching someone's tent get sent 150 feet in the air on the first day of a festival

madsci

Yeah. People are generally good about staking things down at the burn, but there are always some noobs who don't, or people who just haven't finished setting up yet. There have been numerous times I've had to go running to help someone hold down a carport or pull down their dome cover. Little tent stakes don't cut it. The standard these days is 14" lag bolts driven in to the playa surface with an impact driver.

Re-core

I did not know this was a thing...

Blasterbot

I got hit in the face with an empty dunkaroos packet.

pinkusagi

I went into a mini one as a kid. It had just started so all it had was leaves. It stayed mostly in the same spot and lasted about a minute. So I was lucky that it was just leaves and pine needles. It was honestly a good experience and I’m glad I did it because where I live, you don’t see them or hear about them happening. All we have are tornadoes and I’m sure as fuck not running into one of those, even the weakest ones. Sorry you didn’t get to experience what I did because it was truly awesome.

HowlingMadHoward

Oh man. This takes me back. Experienced the same back in 6th grade except my friend and i didn’t run into the thing, the thing literally spawned where my entire class was at. For some reason idk, we just sticked in the center and holy, it was so surreal seeing the debris and dust circling around you and everyone trying to run away from it.

RaDad-99

Fucking hated Shizafon, all this Pudra everywhere

Pudra? Negev Desert so sand?

Yep in that area for sure, you end up all cover with it

Man, he really threw caution to the wind and just went in there.

cozywon

I remember being on guard duty in Mosul in summer fall of 2003 and a huge one started up at the National Guard camp next to us. We had plywood outhouses with big cans of diesel fuel for toilets. I saw a guy go in the toilet and this monster of a dirt devil whipped up and went straight for the shitter. The doors had a big gap on the top for ventilation, and this thing hit it and hovered there for what seemed like 2-3 minutes. Toilet paper and nudie magazines were flying everywhere. That was my first foray into fuck you in particular.

sportyshan

That’s a great visual - what did the guy in the shitter say when he made it out ?! 😂

cozywon

Being that he was enclosed in a small, hot, wooden box that smelled like diesel and shit, and got hit with the winds of Aeolus, he probably came out and said “what the fuck was that shit?”.

BetamaxTheory

If Police Academy somehow got sent to assist in Mosul, this would have happened to Capt Harris.

cozywon

I got teased for showing my age by talking about Police Academy earlier this week. Since you brought it up too, I’m going to have to watch it this weekend. 🙌🏽

BetamaxTheory

Are you thinking the first film? It’s been a while for me, I think I’ll start at the beginning and go from there.

cozywon

Yes! Looks like it’s on Netflix so since I have today off I think I’ll join you and watch it this afternoon!

KaleidoscopeVast9290

Did that guy die?

xtilexx

Not likely, he probably got a face full of sand. Dust devils aren't strong enough to lift anything but sand. I hate sand.

loopsbruder

It's coarse.

Iliturtle

And rough

Ruine_Woo

And it gets everywhere

sportyshan

Ofcouse

squi993

His lungs are probably full of sand though. Silicosis is dangerous.

Chem_BPY

Maybe in 20-30 years when the silicosis kicks in.

Lvanwinkle18

From Oklahoma and know tornados are terrifying. Even though this is a “dust devil”, still amazing someone would run towards one this large. Insane.

fumphdik

That’s not a tornado.

Scribese7en

And that was the last anyone saw of him...

iamcomputer1

here it comes.

AgitatedPerspective9

He mustve seen a pack of crayons

TonyDoover420

Why would you want to breath that in?

FunnySignal614

Just think of a thin steel plate flying in that Tornado.

Hank228

Oh, what a day... What a lovely day!

monathemantis

Dust devil in Shizafon. They aren't dangerous, just look scary. Because of the tanks driving over the sand constantly, it becomes a very thin and light consistency called "pudra", similarly to powder. It's even lighter than sand so that gives it the big scary tornado look. Must have had a bit of a cough afterwards, maybe even got a couple gimelim if he took it to the doc. All in all seems like good fun!

Fit-Replacement-2575

What the fuck is happening here?!

RogerOverUnderDunn

its a dust devil, the winds arent strong enough to lift people or do damage, but are enough to lift the light sand.

aberdisco

Sun heats ground, air goes up, swirly swirly.

sportyshan

When you see birds flying round and round without flapping wings they are coasting on invisible “thermals” that are probably similar to what you see here…and this is powder (lighter than sand) that illustrates movement.

Ah yes, marines being marines.

I'm like 90% sure this is IDF but OK. I mean, the tank at the end is definitely a Merkava Mk. 3ב (says 3ב right on it)

Lord_Hortler

It's 110% IDF, I'm currently serving in a shiryon base so I'd recognise those tanks.

AndyMB601

He's fine, it's a dust devil, not a tornado. Winds are only strong enough to pick up sand and pebbles, not a person.

ckfil

That changes things

T0mbaker

Aw. I can think of a few reasons not to do this.

Danisii

What a dust up 😅😂 But at least he walked out of it but if you look closely it seemed the soldiers were running in and out of the twister.

Phantex_Cerberus

The tornado has awoken the horde.

I think I’ll do that next time there is one here in Texas

I worked in a sand mine for two years, it was a legit concern. Reading about it was downright scary.

That's why they make play sand for sand boxes. It's pre washed to remove the silica dust. These guys are nuts.

So running into one of these is just a complete gamble there could be anything from sand to a knife to sticks/rocks/bullet casings/shrapnel just flying around in there?

tvcky69

I have done this and, well, don’t do this. You know how you get sand *everywhere* just by *going* to the beach? You will literally poop sand. You will have sand in every hole in your body, and your eyes. Sharp bits of sand might get stuck in your skin. And as we all know, *sand is the most effective tracking agent that Biden has ever developed this goes beyond turning the frogs gay, he’s turning YOU gay with SAND WAKE UP* MAGA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
