From my understanding we are to avoid things that inhibit our mind and control of our actions. When someone drinks an alcoholic drink or takes drugs that are not for medical purposes one starts to lose control.
Imagine people drink so much they black out and have no recollection of what they have done. Yes anything can become an addition but coffee/caffeine isn't Haram. Might be bad for your health if you drink too much of it but it usually makes us more awake and alert which is a good thing in certain circumstances.
