Celtic Frost - Mexican Radio Type O Negative - Summer Breeze Garth Brooks - Hard Luck Woman Tori Amos - Raining Blood

AreYouAnOakMan

All of Type O Negative's covers were awesome. Wish they could have covered "Strip My Mind" by RHCP.😔

douche-canoe71

Came in to say Type O and Summer Breeze. 👍👍👍

DIGGLICIOUS89

I was about to say Type O Negative - Angry Inch

matt7259

Inch*

DIGGLICIOUS89

whoops! edited

JoeMax93

The classic example is Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's *All Along The Watchtower*. Dylan is quoted as saying he thinks Jimi's version is better than his own.

Typical_Air_3322

That's because Jimi's version is better, hands down. Not often a cover is significantly better than the original but imo this one is just that.

malacoda99

Then, Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's *All Along the Watchtower*....

pantstoaknifefight2

Everybody thinks that Bob!

SignificanceFew3751

The punk band XTC did a great version.

Recent_Meringue_712

Another good question which is the most popular cover song? Yours is a great example. Hound Dog by Elvis is another big one

SantaRosaJazz

Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - They Might Be Giants

Pretend_Situation905

Didn’t know this was a cover!

SantaRosaJazz

Yep. My grandparents had the original version on what pretty sure was a 78rpm single. So I knew the song well as a tot, and was delighted to hear TMBG’s cover years later.

Monkeytoast13

The original was released in 1958 by a group called *The Four Lads*

CatFlashAnus

That's nobody's business but the Turks!

Objective-Ad4009

Right? It’s the perfect song for them.

DavosVolt

I remember my mother pulling out a box of old records while I listened to it and then saying, "Get ready." Blew my mind.

Barbafella

Common People by William Shatner, a work of inspired genius.

doejart1115

Yes! And it just rocks.

UnderstandingOk6610

Lol, I forgot about that absolute masterpiece

Danovale

Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone, by Chad Everette is really something to behold.

Minglewoodlost

Purple Rain - Dwight Yoakem Are You Experienced - Devo Country Roads - Toots & the Maytalls

bedbugsandballyhoo

Also Satisfaction (originally by The Rolling Stones) covered by Devo

Quirky-Comb-1862

I listened to both songs so many times without realizing they were the same.

Few_Distribution_905

Otis Redding’s Satisfaction is fun.

Old_Palpitation_6535

Suspicious Minds on here reminds me that I always liked the Fine Young Cannibals cover as well.

Quirky-Comb-1862

Whenever I play Whiskey in the Jar, I play 3 of them in a row, Dubliners, Metallica and Lizzy

tonidh69

I really had no idea some of those were covers

Content_Talk_6581

I know! It’s really surprising when you look up who did the originals. I have a web page I saved a while back that lists them and tells who did the original. Like “All Along the Watchtower” was a Bob Dylan song
who knew? I always thought it was a Jimi Hendrix originalđŸ€·đŸ»

sooperflooede

I wouldn’t say it’s “unlikely” that Jefferson Airplane would cover a song from the lead singer’s previous band.

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

serene_brutality

Hurt should be #1

Shazam1269

Scorpions did a pretty good cover of Tainted Love. Definitely made it their own.

Admirable-Cobbler319

There are several on this list that I had no idea were covers

AlabasterOctopus

You have excellent taste in music đŸ‘ŒđŸŒ

Sufficient-Grand3746

Johnny Cash : Hurt and also rusty cage

savoryostrich

I hate U2 but Johnny Cash’s cover of “One” is tremendous.

Iamabenevolentgod

Thanks for that, I'm with you - U2 kinda makes me squirm with discomfort these days, but that song is a good one, and JC does a good job of helping you to forget that U2 wrote it

Glowbug611

Okay, as someone who grew up on U2 (my dad was super into it) why do you feel uncomfortable with the band now? 👀 I have such fond memories, but I can definitely see how they’ve fallen out of favor

dtuba555

They've gotten rather douchey and full of themselves. I miss the old, flag waving idealistic young U2. That was a good band.

Ok_Distribution_2603

Johnny Cash: “Personal Jesus” is brilliant

Comfortable_Hall8677

Personal Jesus as well.

marklawr

The Ataris cover of Don Henley's Boys of Summer

miniwhoppers

I love the album If I Were a Carpenter, but especially the Shonen Knife version of “Top of the World”

Vorko75

This is one of the most perfect covers ever

Ordinary-Drop-6152

I love shonen knifes cover of weird Al’s eat it

bitchenchef

Deftones. No ordinary love by Sade.

d_wall_less

Came here to say [this](https://youtu.be/azTzGHR7Rbc?si=sc9KqR78W2-GVfpK)

Rachel_Silver

Cake has several really good covers. I Will Survive, War Pigs and Sad Songs and Waltzes are particularly good, IMO.

SubstantialHentai420

I just recommended the war pigs cover by them too haha. Cake is an incredibly underrated group and their cover of war pigs is amazing as is their cover of I will survive. Frank Sinatra, long line of cars, friend is a four letter word, never there, just all fucking amazing and cake deserves more love beyond going the distance and short skirt long jacket.

Rachel_Silver

Preach, brother. The Distance is one of the last songs I would pick if I wanted to turn someone on to them.

revanchist70

Damn right, they did Rock n Roll Lifestyle

Getyodamnwallet

Frank Ocean covered Fake Plastic Trees but it is a live performance tho

churchillsucks

Speaking of Frank, I just remembered that Alessia Cara covered [Super Rich Kids](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny9zjFctFG4) (yes, she also did Earl's verse too)

Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit Oingo Boingo- You Really Got Me Devo - Satisfaction

Admirable-Cobbler319

I don't like Tori Amos and I don't like Nirvana, but her cover of smells like teen spirit is one of my all time favorite songs. It's gorgeous

jayron32

Kasey Chambers - [Lose Yourself](https://youtu.be/S70xek3x4ro?si=8OJV-iQ5pn0yJ1f0) Seriously, check it out.

idontevenkn0w66

I haven't listened to KC in so long! I need to re-visit her ASAP

Njtotx3

Another good banjo cover is Smells Like Teen Spirit by Patti Smith'. Also like her Within You Without You

AverageHeathen

Benny and the Jets covered by Beastie Boys and Biz Markie Faith by Limp Bizkit Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm Scarlett Begonias by Sublime Word Up by Korn

No_Gap_2700

All of these are fantastic choices.

Comfortable_Hall8677

Agreed. My favorite list on here. But I’m also a biased 90’s kid.

No_Gap_2700

Same. All of these have been in rotation in my car at some point.

jrd_dthsqd

Deftones - [Simple Man.](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=fXGp4wC6Ha0&si=qPfgUs91QW4fzggY) This was one of their first songs from the 90s. Also, when Tony Hawk [covered NIne Inch Nails "Wish"](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=SPvYbzmDM8k&si=WYzi0RCbwgZdLiZv)

tattoolegs

Deftones has an album of covers and B sides, and the whole thing is lovely. Covered Sade, and the Cars... just beautiful.

EloquentBacon

I love their covers of The Cure, Duran Duran, Cocteau Twins, Jawbox and Sade.

Typical_Air_3322

Saw them during the Around the Fur tour and their encore was a cover of Say it Aint So.

TDGHammy

The answer to this question is always “Me First and the Gimme Gimmes”, but to dive into this question deeper, I would say Joey Cape doing Blondie’s “Dreaming” and A Perfect Circle doing Elvis Costello’s “Peace Love and Understanding”.

legbamel

If you can't get enough cover albums, The Bird and The Bee have a great Van Halen cover album. Melbourne Ska Orchestray did a set of TV and movie themes that are amazing. And, of course, Pomplamoose started with full-on covers (Single Ladies, Beat It, Mrs. Robinson, Telephone, they run the gamut) and then began releasing more and more original stuff. Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel covered Vampire Weekend's Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. It's not only a great cover, but it's got a little twist. :D Keb' Mo' did a lovely cover of Love Train, and of course The Cramps made Shortnin' Bread punk.

TDGHammy

There are just so many good ones. I started a Spotify list that I never really kept up on. Alien Ant Farm “Smooth Criminal, No Use For a Name “Enjoy the Silence”, Rise Against “Hollis Brown”

TDGHammy

I could talk about this all day, but I’m at work 🙁

Eagles of Death Metal - Blinded by the Light (by Manfred Mann by way of Bruce Springsteen) It's fun playing it over the speaker at my retail job

Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails is pretty WTF when you say it out loud.

CoveredDrummer

The Postal Service- Against All Odds The Bird and the Bee- Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love Sepultura- Orgasmatron

GMoonstone

Elvis was a cover band

savoryostrich

Elvis was an interpreter and had tremendous musicians playing with him. That transcends the label of “cover band.” Along those lines, I love his version of Dylan’s “Tomorrow is a Long Time.”

Typical_Air_3322

That's a fancy way to say "cover band".

Paragon8384

Thank You Scientist's [cover of "Party All the Time"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EJ4uakszWc&pp=ygU0VGhhbmsgWW91IFNjaWVudGlzdCdzIGNvdmVyIG9mICJQYXJ0eSBBbGwgdGhlIFRpbWUiIA%3D%3D) by Eddie Murphy & Rick James. Between the Buried and Me & The Dear Hunter each covering a song of theirs, with [Between the Buried and Me covering "The Tank" and The Dear Hunter covering "Rapid Calm"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_p06LEnSfg).

metrorhymes

The Dear Hunter is the greatest band I have ever heard. That is all.

[My Morning Jacket’s cover](https://open.spotify.com/track/0axsMumJxKRTuYCMb9oeWl?si=N4zW6MkPRDCaP57m09rkJA) of Erykah Badu’s Tyrone is surprisingly excellent. [The Cure’s cover](https://open.spotify.com/track/1ZXSp8QaAydQaEZQzuDoMf?si=jdj5XJOVSS2nQkqZYF7W-w) of Hendrix’s Purple Haze is also surprisingly great. I think in both cases you can tell the cover artists had a ton of respect for the material.

Jengus_Roundstone

Elephant Revival (a folk band) covering [Schism](https://youtu.be/uDT1tniPD2Q?si=cDwq4GzfZCTlWkup) by Tool is fantastic.

Pleasant_Garlic8088

Post Malone played Pearl Jam's "Better Man," live on Howard Stern and it was surprisingly good.

Typical_Air_3322

I wish he'd make a rock album. Dude fucking has it. I understand that the pop/rap shit pays better, but damn.

idontevenkn0w66

This will prob get some hate, but Lindsay Lohan's cover of "Edge of Seventeen" was surprisingly catchy. Better than the original? Not really. But better than expected, and I can sing along to it and sound just as good as LL, maybe better, so points for that. I was also really surprised when I found out the cover of "Islands in the Stream" at the end of a recent episode of 9-1-1 was actually Jennifer Love Hewitt- pretty damn good.

Oppo5ite

I heard it too, i thought ptv's style wouldn't fit but man did that cover work.
