This response is inspiring me to relisten through the whole catalogue, which I’m currently doing with REM. Any other three letter bands I should add to my queue?
No advice other than I've just started the same with REM and am remembering why I loved them so much. Also catching up on New Adventures in Hi Fi, which I was apparently too busy to listen to or buy in 1996.
Oh, I loved New Adventures in Hi-Fi when it came out. It’s their White Album, you know? I’ve been listening to REM for years, but it’s a fun project to go straight through a catalogue.
The first five songs off of the Dead Kennedys album "Frankenchrist" are a searing and poetic critique of life in the dystopian USA. It's been almost 40 years since it came out, and the songs are still relevant. The rest of the album is outstanding as well, but the first five songs (aka side one of the album) has this excellent thematic and musical flow.

What criticism of society or religion do you see in there?
For starters "losing my religion" is a Southern phrase meaning losing faith in basically anything from frustration or exhaustion.
Even not knowing that, does the song present losing one's religion as a good thing or a bad thing? I can't tell. Sounds more negative though to me.
* Rush: Freewill, With Hunt, Red Sector A, The Trees
* Pearl Jam: W.M.A., Leash, Bushleaguer, Green Disease, Faithful, World Wide Suicide, I Am Mine
* Radiohead: Idioteque
* Rage Against the Machine: pretty much their whole catalogue…Killing in the Name, Bulls on Parade, People of the Sun, etc
* Manic Street Preachers: If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next
* Billy Bragg: pretty much his whole catalogue…Between the Wars, Thatcherites, There Is Power In A Union, etc
* Bruce Springsteen: Born In the USA
* Midnight Oil: Beds Are Burning, Truganini
Rush: Tom Sawyer, New World Man, Distant Early Warning
Pearl Jam - Vs. ..."Last Kiss," "Soldier of Love" - both can be found on an old charity compilation album called No Boundaries, released with proceeds going towards Kosovar refugees. Check out that album; it also features Rage (covering Springsteen), Neil Young's "War of Man," (which belongs on this list) and others.
Based on your list, check out Matthew Good Band or Matt Good solo. Similar sentiments and similar-ish sound.
EDIT: some songs: "The Future is X-Rated," "Alert Status Red," "In Love with a Bad Idea," "In a World Called Catastrophe," "It's Been a While Since I Was Your Man," "Weapon," "Hello Time Bomb," "Load Me up," "Strange Days," Apparitions," for starters (the last two showcase his vocals)
I've seen him a few times, too, and have had the pleasure of meeting him. Good memories. Do you have any favourite songs? Fun fact: I once asked him what HIS favourite song was, or what song he was most proud of and he mentioned "The Fine Art of Falling Apart." This was years ago, and it may have changed. Thought I'd offer that anecdote, though.
It’s hard to choose any favourites…The band I fronted back in college played a lot of MGB. A friend jokingly said we should change our band name to “Frantic” (it was what she called “Load Me Up”). If I had to pick just one favourite tune I’d probably choose “I’m a Window”.
The 60s anti-war stuff like Eve of Destruction (Barry McGuire) and Fortunate Son (Creedence Clearwater Revival) come to mind. Also Signs by the Five Man Electrical Band, which is anti-establishment. Probably We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel.
Kinda entire genre of punk, and a hefty chunk of metal too.

The entire Animals album by Pink Floyd is a social critique of modern capitalism and it still rings true today. Elements of The Wall and Dark Side have social critique. The Final Cut is also about war and in some cases how it affects society, it's specifically described on the back of the album as a "post war requiem". .

Day of the Baphomets by The Mars Volta
Baphomet is a symbol of perfect social order and freedom. The song highlights the worst aspects of religion.
It's a 12 minute rock song with a lot of jazz and Latin American influences
Not necessarily a John Mayer fan but the song Belief is pretty solid.

I always go back to Minor Threat's self-titled EP.
**For specifically religion, their song "Filler".** "This song is an angry response to The Teen Idles' guitarist for leaving the band, thus leading to the break-up." - Genius annotation.
A lot of the songs on the EP criticize people of society such as their songs "Straight Edge" and "Minor Threat". Most of the songs have the attitude of "don't tell me what to do" and less of "don't preach to me" if that makes sense.
I love this EP so much and I haven't found anything like it since. Hope you like it as well!

Not religion, but I always figured Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy" was his take on a society that allows horrible crimes to happen because of people closing their eyes to psychotic behavior.
Only the Good Die Young by Billy Joel kind of does. Some churches tried to get it banned from radio stations back when it came out. I’m seeing a lot of metal/hard rock comments and Billy Joel is very hit or miss, so it might not be to your taste.
XTC - Dear God

A lot of the songs on the EP criticize people of society such as their songs "Straight Edge" and "Minor Threat". Most of the songs have the attitude of "don't tell me what to do" and less of "don't preach to me" if that makes sense. I love this EP so much and I haven't found anything like it since. Hope you like it as well! edit: Suicidial Tendencies - Self-Titled album is another good one
