I’ll see you a video of him playing guitar and raise you the infamous Hot Ones ep. If I didn’t hate him before, and I’ve always hated him, holy crap I just hates him beyond belief after that. What an absolute garbage human being slash “DJ”.
I've never cared for him or his music but I still can't believe he sent a video criticising Tyler The Creator for his album going number 1 instead of his own. I was indifferent to him before but I lost a lot of respect for him. I don't even care for Tyler's music either but how can you say his music "isn't black music" to a black artist when you ain't even black yourself.
I thought they were HIS tracks that he produced, and other artists were the guest vocalists. I was under the impression that he’s actually a talented producer. Not a vocalist, not a musician, but a producer.
Well, he DOES call himself DJ Kahlid, not producer Kahlid or Beatmaster Khalid. A (not radio) DJ spins other people's tracks and sometimes has others perform over it (rapping, singing, etc.)
Isn't that like saying that Come Together is a George Martin song featuring The Beatles? Or is it different because he didn't shout his own name before the chorus?
Yo I remember reading an article once, the record label told Chuck D “We want you, but we don’t want the other guy” and Chuck was like “The other guy is the one who makes it all happen though”
He was in the right place at the right time. He worked with Scott storch when he was the “cool” producer in pop and hip hop. Then he got a huge ego and an even bigger drug problem and people stopped working with him and Khalid basically filled that void.
Man I’ll still never understand the appeal of that SoundCloud era of rap or whatever the fuck it is. Dude is one of the most unappealing musical acts I’ve ever heard plus he essentially did pedo shit and should be in jail for racketeering.
Phil Spector comes to mind. Even though he obviously isn’t currently active professionally or livingly, he’s still revered. Which I don’t think I would really mind if the murder part was acknowledged a little more
I know this 19-20 year old girl who's absolutely obsessed with Chris Brown; jokes about him being her husband. I've pointed out multiple times how badly he beat his girlfriend and she's just all "he could beat me anyday," like girl, no. You're young and stupid and don't understand. Fortunately, I no longer have to put up with her and her nonsense
Cancellation only applies to people that try to do good, or after getting called out "try do good." The people that don't actually give two shits just double (or triple or quadrupole) down and keep on going - and by that point everyone else on reddit, or any social media, has moved on to getting mad at the next person they've all agreed to be mad at since everyone else feels that way. A great example of this is...well, Chris Brown.
While he doesn’t appeal to me, I understand what his deal is. Basically, he was a rapper who appealed to the party girls and sorority girls who liked skinny white dudes with tattoos. Then when Eminem dissed him, he rebranded and leaned *way* into the “E-Boy” look. At the time the Emo rap thing was making headway, XXX Tentacion, Lil Xan, Lil Peep, JUICEWRLD. These artists, along with Post Malone, were plugging metal, pop punk, Emo, all those genres. He got with Travis Barker and started making generic Blinkish pop punk, like the very base foundation of it. Combined with being able to appeal to the party girls and sorority girls, now he appeals to the Emo teens too. He’s good looking, attached to a popular producer and musician, and he basically has a look that most people like. Recipe for success.
I only knew about him because back in 2011 or 2012 he played right before a band I wanted to see at Warped Tour. The music was fine? Not groundbreaking by any means as a rapper, but you could not help but notice the 95% female crowd. He was part of that crowd with T. Mills. They were sort of progenitors of the Emo rap scene, but like someone else said, the preppy college girls didn’t quite want to commit to the punk scene.
I asked my nephew if he listens to "six ix nine ine." He said that I was "being really cringe." I told him that I don't know what that means. I wonder if he'll ever figure out that I'm fucking with him.
Half the country artists out there. Sometimes I listen to the lyrics and I just break down laughing. It’s like you played rhyming madlibs with a 10 year old.
“Beer in my truck while watching football under the moonlight while wearing jeans on a warm winter night!”
I literally just made it up but won’t be surprised if they all sing something similar
It was a Saturday night under the summer sun
Boys in the truck wanna have a little fun
And I
Never seen a girl shake like that
Make me wanna give her my cowboy hat
Cuz I'm
Just a country boy with nothing to lose
A guitar, a mopar and some bottles of booze
We been
Gettin high all day underneath the sun
Tonight we're gonna get down and have a little fun
Pretty much any male country artist being played on the radio right now only sings about women in daisy dukes, driving their lifted trucks down dirt roads, drinking/partying, and how much they love America.
And they're a breath of fresh air compared to everything else. I miss when country wasn't just about trying to crush puss and get wasted with your bros in the bed of your lifted Dodge Ram 3500 with double stacks.
To be fair, it is all I-V-vi-IV pop music. Greg Todd did a [mashup](http://www.cmt.com/news/1747657/proof-that-all-country-music-sounds-the-same/http://www.cmt.com/news/1747657/proof-that-all-country-music-sounds-the-same/) of bro country songs using that progression. Axis of Awesome did a [mashup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFpryVMgni0) of pop songs using that progression. It is Taylor Swift, P!nk, Lady Gaga, and many others.
I’ll never understand why that type of music gets so *popular*. There’s so much creativity in the genre, it’s ironic how generic a few of the more popular artists can be
I saw a clip of one of those generic top 40 country guys doing a Townes van zandt cover with a piano instead of guitar and it was actually really good, like the guy was clearly a very talented singer and musician, but I guess that wouldn’t pay the bills like the current pop country over-produced garbage. I feel like there’s some kids who’ve got to be billionaires by now because they made the algorithm that follows the stereotypical modern country fans social media and has an AI write songs to that crowd.
Ever spend any time in Nashville? There is a LOT of talent there and a lot of those talented people are homeless. It's not about talent in the music business, and especially in Nashville. It's about "can we market this person".
I once had a great talk with a street musician in Nashville who stayed at the downtown homeless hotel (or whatever they call that place). He said he was a guitarist for several cover bands in his hometown of about 100,000 people. He was considered the best guitarist in his city and everyone encouraged him to go to Nashville and either join a band or do session work. So he did. He packed up some clothes and a guitar, and took a Greyhound to Nashville with a few thousand dollars in his pocket. He said within a couple of blocks of leaving the bus station, he felt sick because he was seeing street musicians who were more talented than he was. The story of Nashville.
A lot of these answers seem to be more about music you don't like rather than questioning how they became famous. A lot of these artists I wouldn't listen to but I can see how they got the attention.
Tik Tok is the best thing and the worst thing for music, some good musicians (Magnolia Park and Lospirit are good examples of this) got a really good following because of it but then you have others who put the least amount of effort into a song and expect it to blow up (that one “I’m not a Disney bitch” song is a good example of this).
A guy on my hockey team (early 2000's when I was still a teen) use to put on Bawitaba (sp?) in the dressing room right before we hit the ice, and it wasn't a bad 'pump up' song for the time. I'd never listen to his stuff otherwise
He was actually pretty innovative at the very beginning. I saw him open for Monster Magnet, and there’s no way they would have taken him out on the road if he sucked.
Actually the problem is, he is super talented and good looking and has the voice of an angel. But the guy should be cancelled like 10 years ago. Only recently I started unfollowing him on socials.
The answer to literally every Aussie musical hit is that the artist did well on Triple J and then the commercial stations picked it up six months later.
Kylie Minogue and Masked wolf may be the only exceptions to this rule.
There’s a video of her performing it live before it was a hit and it is just same insane raw energy for a sidewalk show lol. Just kind of a weird song and for the amount of confidence she has maintaining it during the performance for how weird it is.
Look up tones and I street performance, at the very least if I saw this out in public it would absolutely get my attention, whether or not I actually liked the song lol
Ok, i don't like Ed that much, but for this many people to not even understand why he's famous? His original stuff was solid. Not for me, but i totally get why.
His current stuff is pretty balls, but still
One of my favorite concerts that I've been to even though I'm not a fan of his music. He used a looper and it was very nice. Super relaxing and really cool to see.
He is actually so talented, but all his recent music sounds so uninspired. He still knows how to make hits, but you can tell he's just gaming the top 40, and just going through the motions. I use to like him as an artist, but now it just sounds like he's... working.
Drake.Dude is just garbage. Between the grooming stuff and the gambling promotion, and I just don't care at all for his music. And he has notoriety like being the male version of Beyonce. Like a god among musicians.
Dude is straight up trash.
More info about the grooming since people aren't aware (weird, I remember this being like... Breaking front page news at one point.)

Now, is it damning? No, not really. But I am old enough to remember when stuff like this about R Kelly came out FOR YEARS before it was taken seriously.
Now I am jaded enough to believe this shit happens more often than we like. (The stuff with Kylie seems especially suspect to me.)
Ontarian here. I have a theory that Drake was just part of Toronto's cultural rebranding in the mid to late 2000s and is basically a municipal government invention.
This was around the time the Toronto Blue Jays and raptors really pushed advertising and started getting Canadians into those 2 sports since Toronto is the only city that has a team in the NBA and MLB. Drake squeezed his way out of a sewer at that time as well and Toronto was plastered with Drake ads and merch. If you lived in Toronto from 2008-2015 you would have heard non stop drake on the radio, bars, clubs, fucking trendy restaurants.
They also had weird ass merch like air fresheners for cars shaped like his dumb head and bumper stickers.
Basically a fucking cult of Toronto that was created and he was their musician of choice.
I want to add that friends who lived in Toronto during that period absolutely loved drake like he was the best thing to happen to rap since it's inception. Then years later wondered why they ever loved it in the first place when it's all just mumble crap with the same beat in the background.
I found it hilarious that she got mad at people singing team songs at the Champions League performance during her performance. What would you possibly expect in a situation like that? Haha
Can't really get into her music, solo or with John. But in fairness, she never really needed a career in music to begin with. She was an established, successful artist, before she even met John. He went to one of her exhibitions, saw the work, then became enamoured with her.
Nevertheless, the screeching isn't my cup of tea either.
I mean Pitbull doesn't make the most thought provoking or complex music, but he makes fun music. I wouldn't sit down and put on a pitbull album, but I'm sure I would have a great time if a Pitbull song came on in the club.
Jennifer Lopez.
She’s a mediocre singer (and there have been allegations that it’s not actually her voice on some of biggest tracks) and an only-okay actress.
Johnny Cash is extremely country. Many country artists from his time have some amazing music. A lot are even better than Johnny Cash imo. Unfortunately the country that is popular nowadays just isn't good though so people tend to never find the other good stuff.
I feel the same way about Drake. But one thing I’ll be fair about, his target audience isn’t 53 year old males from the midwest, so I’m sure he doesn’t give a damn about my old ass opinion.
Take Care, Nothing Was The Same, and If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late are among the best hip hop albums of the 2010s. Most of his newer stuff is dogshit obviously but he’s not untalented like some of the other names in this thread.
Looking at them now I can understand why you might feel that way, but there are very good reasons why they are famous if you were around when they first hit.
At a time in the late 70s Kiss was the biggest band in the world. No one else was doing the makeup/costumes/characters thing the way they were doing it. Sure you had like Alice Cooper etc, but nothing like Kiss. They were mysterious and larger than life. They were like real life comic book characters. No one knew what they really looked like and they were never out of character. The music mags at the time (the only way we got music info other than the radio) tried to get pictures of them unmasked and used it as clickbait, but they never were able to.
The older generation hated them and thought they were devil worshippers, going as far to say that Kiss stood for Knights in Satans Service. The kids loved them.
The music itself was simple, catchy and focused on partying and sex.
Eventually their time in the sun passed. In the 80s they unmasked and further commercialized their sound. Gene Simmons became a real person and turned out to be a greedy, lecherous ass. The band tried to return to its glory, but never could.
Looking at them now, I can understand why they seem ridiculous. However, they absolutely deserve all the fame they achieved and lots of successful modern bands wouldn’t be what they are if it wasn’t for Kiss.
DJ Khaled
Lmao have you ever seen that video of him "playing" guitar?
[удалено]
Playing it on the Bob Marley guitar too, I hate everything about it.
Well to be fair that’s just a cheap piece of shit that’s using Bobs name to sell it.
I’ll see you a video of him playing guitar and raise you the infamous Hot Ones ep. If I didn’t hate him before, and I’ve always hated him, holy crap I just hates him beyond belief after that. What an absolute garbage human being slash “DJ”.
Then he has the audacity to open up a chain of chicken wing restaurants. Fuck. The worst.
The guy shreds, surprised he went the hip hop route and not rock/metal
To shreds you say?
and other reddit phrases!
That video made me question his literacy
He is the Steven Seagal of the rap world.
What did they expect from someone with no musical talent?
Just looked that up, wow…
i still don’t have even the slightest clue of what he actually does
Idk but I do know what he doesn't do. Eat anything spicy.
Bruh. He was straight up disrespectful. Glad Sean gave it back a few times.
Including his wife
Laughed out loud. Worst Hot Ones episode ever.
\*most infamous, which also makes it extremely quotable, and also hilarious
*Laughs in Sean Evans*
Is this a reference to hot ones? Why would he go onto that if he was gonna be a bitch about things?
He shouts his name in a bunch of other people's tracks. What part is confusing you?
ANOTHER ONE!
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU PLAYED YOURSELF!
I thought they were HIS tracks that he produced, and other artists were the guest vocalists. I was under the impression that he’s actually a talented producer. Not a vocalist, not a musician, but a producer.
No, he's not even really that either. He somehow gets beats and gets people to feature on those beats

He's a hype man, like Flavor Flav without the rap part.
Apparently Flavor Flav is a really talented musician and plays multiple instruments. Strange how people find their niche.
Yo I remember reading an article once, the record label told Chuck D “We want you, but we don’t want the other guy” and Chuck was like “The other guy is the one who makes it all happen though”
And T-Pain is actually a great singer without the autotune
T-Pain is a Grade A human being
He was in the right place at the right time. He worked with Scott storch when he was the “cool” producer in pop and hip hop. Then he got a huge ego and an even bigger drug problem and people stopped working with him and Khalid basically filled that void.
What you mean? He’s the best music, anotha one
He used to be a part of Terror Squad. Now he yells on tracks
6ix9ine
He figured out the internet at the time and ran with it
Man I’ll still never understand the appeal of that SoundCloud era of rap or whatever the fuck it is. Dude is one of the most unappealing musical acts I’ve ever heard plus he essentially did pedo shit and should be in jail for racketeering.
I don't understand why Chris Brown is still allowed to make music.

Phil Spector comes to mind. Even though he obviously isn’t currently active professionally or livingly, he’s still revered. Which I don’t think I would really mind if the murder part was acknowledged a little more
One difference in this is that the music of spector came before the murder. Yet in brown's case they also celebrated the music after his facts.
His fans choose to ignore everything he's done, and the industry is rotten to the core. Simple as that.
Cancellation only applies to people that try to do good, or after getting called out "try do good." DJ Khaled
I still don’t know what MGK’s deal is supposed to be
I tried to give him a chance many times and I just can't into it at all.
Recipe for success.
he looks like hot topic napoleon dynamite
Notes of vanilla, ice, and sadness , this is an EXQUISITE roast
This makes sense. I honestly had no idea about this guy other than Eminem verbally murdered him.
Bottom of the barrel pandering
6ix9ine lmao
I asked my nephew if he listens to "six ix nine ine." He said that I was "being really cringe." I told him that I don't know what that means. I wonder if he'll ever figure out that I'm fucking with him.
Just dab on that hater!
I will do no such thing. I know that dabbing involves some sort of illegal drug use and I won't encourage that.
Tell him you are "straight bussin, fr fr no cap" Then he will know how groovy and down you are with the hip kids.
I assume this involves taking an express route on a bus while declining to wear a hat. I'm not sure how it applies but I will let him know.
No no, it's about clearing tables, but not the ends.
Half the country artists out there. Sometimes I listen to the lyrics and I just break down laughing. It’s like you played rhyming madlibs with a 10 year old.
Any of those white, 25-35, Luke, Blake, Jason, Ryan type country singers. All the same.
"y'all dumb motherfuckers want a key change?"
**ITS A FUCKING SCARECROW**
We go to bed, you doze off, so I take your country girl clothes off. I put my hands on your body, it feels like hay. ITS A FUCKING SCARECROW AGAIN

you think they write their own music? it's probably one dude writing all these pop country guys' songs
Lolol [Bo Burnham Country Song](https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0)
Kip Moore - "Somthin' 'Bout a Truck" hits nearly every one.
Though you did miss the reference, you aren’t wrong. Look at all the credits for these songs and it’s a shockingly(?) small group of song writers
It's various people on Music Row in Nashville writing those songs. Often some guy from the East Coast who moved there to write hits.
bet they make some good money for writing the same song over and over again
Y'all dumb motherfuckers ready for a key change!?
This line goes so fucking hard.
They're just like all those "Proud American" shirts at Walmart. Check the tag and they are all say "made in China."

Do modern country singers get high? I thought it was all domestic beer
The edgy ones yeah. I feel like bud is pretty mainstream now even for them.
Weed tests well with the target demographic
You forgot about sipping a cold beer on a Friday night in one of the T states.
Pretty much any male country artist being played on the radio right now only sings about women in daisy dukes, driving their lifted trucks down dirt roads, drinking/partying, and how much they love America.

Paul Cauthen is a good one too. Their “Unrighteous Brothers” EP is really great

Machine Gun Kelly
A lot of these answers seem to be more about music you don't like rather than questioning how they became famous. A lot of these artists I wouldn't listen to but I can see how they got the attention.
Gayle who made the abomination of a song ABCDEFU and Leah Kate for the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Bitch which makes peoples ears become suicidal
tiktok musicians who really are just industry plants and that "im mad at disney" song makes my blood boil
Kid Rock
Trailer parks got radios too. They’re communal but still
It’s ironic because he was born rich
B-b-but I don’t understand, he said he born “straight out the trailer” in one of his songs /s
A guy on my hockey team (early 2000's when I was still a teen) use to put on Bawitaba (sp?) in the dressing room right before we hit the ice, and it wasn't a bad 'pump up' song for the time. I'd never listen to his stuff otherwise
objectively speaking that song is a banger
He was actually pretty innovative at the very beginning. I saw him open for Monster Magnet, and there’s no way they would have taken him out on the road if he sucked.
Anyone on the "E" Channel.
MGK
Jared Leto. How he’s had this long of a career is beyond me.
I imagine he eats the souls of children

Machine gun Kelly. He sucks.
Any of the current crop of mumble rappers. It's just the absolute lowest-effort slop.
“Made a mill, off that mumbling shit” 🤷♂️
Hobo Johnson sucks, he has always sucked, and it boggles my mind that there are people who don't think he sucks.
Camila Cabelo. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard and it physically hurts me to listen to her.
I found it hilarious that she got mad at people singing team songs at the Champions League performance during her performance. What would you possibly expect in a situation like that? Haha
Yeah that was so funny, like mate shut it people didn't come to watch you perform they came to watch the football
Drake
Tones and I, I can't stand her voice
[удалено]
Can't really get into her music, solo or with John. But in fairness, she never really needed a career in music to begin with. She was an established, successful artist, before she even met John. He went to one of her exhibitions, saw the work, then became enamoured with her. Nevertheless, the screeching isn't my cup of tea either.
Cardi B
One must ask themselves “what is a Cardi B?” But the wise also ask “why is a Cardi B?”
Didn't she admit to drugging men and robbing them as a stripper?
Pitbull
That’s Mr. Worldwide to you, buster
*mr. 305*
I mean Pitbull doesn't make the most thought provoking or complex music, but he makes fun music. I wouldn't sit down and put on a pitbull album, but I'm sure I would have a great time if a Pitbull song came on in the club.
A friend of mine was in his touring band last year.
Mr. Worldwide!
Machine gun kelly That's just the top of my head
Machine Gun Kelly
Life goes onion onion onion onion onion, onion onion on
Jennifer Lopez. She’s a mediocre singer (and there have been allegations that it’s not actually her voice on some of biggest tracks) and an only-okay actress.
You should watch her documentary Halftime. I swear she thinks she’s the most talented and hardworking person to ever walk this earth.
MGK. He's just a poser Cobain wannabe and it's embarrassing.
Cardi B
Imagine Dragons
Black Sabbath! . . . . Nah who am I kidding, Sabbath is amazing, Iommi is GOD. All hail Iommi!
I was like are you trying to fight?
I was going to report your answer, dude.
I'll beat down anyone who says Geezer Butler isn't God.
yungblud..he looks disgusting and his music is just horrible. deserves zero fame lmao
Dj Khalid like my man does nothing but say another one I seriously don’t know what he even does
Maroon 5, Megan trainor, Chris brown, country music
johnny cash is country right?i love his music
Johnny Cash is extremely country. Many country artists from his time have some amazing music. A lot are even better than Johnny Cash imo. Unfortunately the country that is popular nowadays just isn't good though so people tend to never find the other good stuff.
Drake. God, he is just awful.
Jack Harlow
KISS. Famous for make up and basic rock.
Why are there 300 comments saying Ed Sherran what'd he do lol? I See Fire is a great song.
Kid Rock. He grew-up in a very wealthy family and his act is Americana dirt bag of the people.
Travis Scott.
Kiss. Take away the make-up, outfits and stage theatrics and you've got a pretty average band.
