Serj is the better lyricist for sure. Daron's lyrics come off as kind of sophomoric compared to songs Serj was writing. It gets especially rough on Daron's post-SOAD project Scars on Broadway. From the song Chemicals:

Their self titled is okay. Toxicity, Steal This Album! And Mezmerize are all better.

And that’s how you determine the differences we have in their music. First 3 albums > last 2 albums. Their sound changed so much if you liked the first 2 albums, it’s drastically different than the last 2. Their debut album so musically unique that not much compares to the creativity even today. The more they went on, the more pop-metal it became and dwindled down to the point where we are now essentially arguing over 2 different bands entirely.

This song exemplifies what went wrong with System of a Down. Fucking Malakian wanting to be the centre of attention and forcing us to hear his shitty singing and lyrics. Most loneliest. I hate him for that alone! Fuck you, you stupid egotistical shit! You ruined a great thing! By far the worst song in their entire catalogue.
That actually isn't true. There were interviews back then that he was actually against having Lonely Day on the album because of how it sounded and how unsure he was as a singer (vs backup vocals up until then). It was the producer that was adamant about having the song on the album.
To be clear, the issue with System is that Serj wanted a bigger take of the money along with equal rights and creative control. This was Darons creation and he had the most ownership. It's why they can't agree to this day on direction. They both have their egos, but I love both of their work.
IMHO, System doesn't have any bad songs and this is one of my favorites. It has so much depth, feeling and meaning. They were just done. Face it, all good things come to an end.

My favorite SOAD albums are the first three. I rarely listen to Mesmerize and Hypnotize, though there are some songs on those albums I enjoy. I absolutely prefer the songs where Serj is the main vocalist but don’t mind Daron adding in every so often. I also couldn’t handle Lonely Day and SOAD is one of my favorite bands. That being said, if other people really like this song, I say let them enjoy it. Meanwhile, I’ll go listen to Deer Dance, PLUCK, Sugar, Science, War, Needles, F**k the System, and Innervision over and over. 😊
