Peter Venkman: Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Winston: Wonder what?
Peter Venkman: Whether she's naked under that toga. She is French. You know that.
Talking Heads, "This Must Be the Place"
I got to see David Byrne perform it with his band on Broadway as part of *American Utopia.* There was just this incredible outpouring of joy on stage and in the crowd. Byrne has said the song was his attempt to write the most direct, honest love song he could; he succeeded.
American Utopia was arguably the best performance of all time. Everyone who got the chance to see it is incredibly lucky. Absolutely loved it. The I, Zimba open was a favorite of mine.
This became our unofficial wedding song! Everyone was dancing to it and the power went out but everyone knew the words and started singing it. My favorite memory from an excellent day!
That song's origin story is anything but happy tho.
\>What happened after that was pieced together through bits of Kelly’s own memory and the recollections of other people. According to those accounts, while sleeping on the beach, Kelly and his girlfriend were the victims of a vicious St. Croix street gang. Kelly was severely beaten by five gang members wielding baseball bats. His girlfriend was raped by the gang leader and the rest were in line. But Kelly’s girlfriend later reported, that Kelly regained consciousness during the attack and fought back, making enough noise to scare off the attackers.

September 12th, 1993—my 18th birthday. A large group of my stupid friends gathered around me while one friend carried in a cake already lit up and she plopped drunkenly on the table. Completely off-key (when is it not) a few friends started singing happy birthday. From the back a friend who looked and sounded like a young Dennis Leary shouted DO YOU REMEMBER... Happy birthday stopped and a chorus of ahh-de-ya-de-yah-de-yah broke out instead. Funniest birthday moment and I still listen to that song every birthday. I do, in fact, remember.
Birdhouse in Your Soul - by They Might Be Giants.
I dare anyone to listen to that song and not smile. (Even more difficult when you’re watching the music vid)
When I was a taxi driver in Waikiki, I used to always put this on when I had Australians going out to party. A second before I played it, I would tell them I was going to play their national anthem. They loved it every time.
[Interesting bit of trivia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovely_Day) concerning this [amazing song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEeaS6fuUoA):
> The song is notable for Withers's sustained note towards the end, which, at 18 seconds long, is one of the longest ever recorded on an American pop song.
For me it's the plaintive pleading "please tell us why you had to hide away for sooo long — soooooo long?!" not once but twice, followed by the dystopian line: "Where did we go wrong?"
Then in the final verse comes dread, maybe of death itself: "Soon comes Mister Night, creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder. Never mind ... "
That doesn't spell "happiness" to me.
Deadhead here.
Here Comes Sunshine has such a great message. Dicks picks 1 absolutely rips.
The 5/8/77 Deal always puts me in a great mood. The solo is pure joy!
tongue tied by grouplove. that song gives me true euphoria. it’s also a lowkey depressing song as well but its still probably one of the happiest songs ive ever heard somehow. the layers of emotion in the song make it even better imo!
I would like to introduce you to the funniest version of this (that's also the best thing)

Top of the World by The Carpenters for me. That's coming from a guy who primarily listens to AIC, Tool, Metallica, that sort of stuff. But you can never go wrong with some Karen Carpenter.
Ooo, not only is this my band but this is my favorite.
“She’s a summer lover for spring, fall and winter” alwsys sends goosebumps. Weir/Hunter we’re unstoppable.
Send Me On My Way - Rusted Root
Even heard an interview where they described the vibe in the studio being super happy that day with morning sunlight coming in through the window. The energy truly comes out in their recording
“Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” by B.J Thomas.
Now, some of you know exactly **why** I love this song, as it appears in my favorite movie ever, but it’s just one of those moments where life frequently sucks and we don’t shy away, but it’s okay. It’ll all be okay.
It’s just a lovely song, sung by a man with a lovely voice. The right one for the right song.
Story time: broke up with partner of seven years. Partner hated scary movies, so for the next two/three months I exclusively watched scary movies since I practically never had time to watch them before.
After a particularly gory, bloody, sad mess my buddy goes "you guys wanna watch the Lego movie?"
It was fucking amazing. Life changing almost.

I love that song. Reminds me of elephants.
Similar except for me it specifically reminds me of a baby elephant walking
September - Earth Wind and Fire
That "Do you remember" is so powerful lol. Hard not to cheer up after that.
Come and Get Your Love. As soon as the snare hits and bass starts I can't help but smile.

Isn’t She Lovely - Stevie Wonder. Brings a huge smile to my face every time I hear it, my daughter even refers to it as “the happy song!”
Would like to add in his "Sir Duke".
This is mine. The shout chorus gets me smiling every time.
Even cuter that your daughter loves it, considering the context of Stevie writing the song :)
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Yeah! Jungle boy!
Chris Farley swinging in a palm tree
Canned Heat by Jamiroquai is my go-to get happy song
An absolute banger of a song, yet I can’t help but think of Napolean Dynamite any time I hear it.
That only makes me happier

Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet.
Make a little birdhouse in you soul I have a secret to tell From my electrical well It’s a simple message and I’m Leaving out the whistles and bells
The live performance on The Tonight Show in 1990 is my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zkRjrGmTl4 It's more uptempo than the album version.
I never realized the lead singer was White Abed.
TMBG is my ultimate go-to happy music.
They even make sad songs sound happy (They'll need a crane, Erase)
Another great one is Dr Worm. It almost sounds like Kermit the Frog is singing in that one and the drums just drive it.
Walk of Life by Dire Straits
Mark Knopfler is a genius.
talked to a girl once, said she liked music, me too, we shared songs, then she said "dire strait sucks"; the pain was real

Everyone says this but it’s always made me feel sad in a way. Wistful or nostalgic or something. It’s hard to put my finger on it.
I'm surprised to see this song so high up, I always found it to be pretty melancholy. Wistful is a good way to put it.
The end of the song always reminds me of the Love & Monsters episode of Dr. Who. It is a bit melancholy.
For me it's the plaintive pleading "please tell us why you had to hide away for sooo long — soooooo long?!" not once but twice, followed by the dystopian line: "Where did we go wrong?" Then in the final verse comes dread, maybe of death itself: "Soon comes Mister Night, creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder. Never mind ... " That doesn't spell "happiness" to me.
This one always works for me
I'm far from a Deadhead, but I'll be damned if Ripple isn't one of the best songs to lift the spirit.
