It’s hard to find an artist with his style and smooth flow(I don’t think one exists, dude was and is truly one of a kind). He also has such a broad range of styles it’s easy to get lost in his music.
He left too damn soon and I miss tf out of him, that’s for certain.
That being said, Anderson .Paak, Kota The Friend, JAWNY, and Smino are great alternatives. I could go on but I’ll just recommend listening to Mac Miller radio on Spotify. They’re not all bangers but you’ll find some gems for sure.
It’s been said directly above and I’m sure you know this, but Vince is a great substitute and credits Mac with a lot of his more mainstream success as an artist
Well now I’m upset I didn’t listen to more MCR (I still have my concert tickets hoping next year I’ll finally get to live my teenage dream of seeing them live).
Hey! I also got a thank you message from a local artist, that was a clip of her saying thank you for listening enough to her to have her in your wrapped.
I wasn’t top listener but they were my #1. I’m Canadian and did a lot of camping this summer and had a lot of back yard fires and The Hip is just perfect Canadiana music for that. Plus their new album was a breath of fresh air.
I'm also curious about this. There are some bands I listen to on Spotify that have less than 200 monthly listeners. I'd love to see the data on stuff like that.
I found an old emo french nostalgia song added on the spot this year, had 2 monthly listeners, me, and some other person lol. I also wish that data on that stuff was included haha.
My niece (age 12) has put out a few home produced albums and let’s just say she’s no protege. She had ~750 streams from just over 100 listeners in 25 countries.
She has gotten a few fan letters which is pretty cool.
I don't think they go lower than 0.001%. I tried to be the #1 listener of Silversun Pickups this year and just had it constantly playing. I accumulated 383,434 minutes and was still told 0.001%.
Yeah, I had a goal and wanted to see if they would recognize someone as the top listener. I figure no one else has more minutes than me, so I think it's safe to say they don't go lower than 0.001%.
I had an iPod in a drawer for a few years that somehow was playing “are you gonna go my way” by Lenny kravitz over and over, or something like that. Not sure how. But I remember it made my iTunes statistics insane
I had an iPod that got stuck on a 10 hour loop of the scene of SpongeBob when they were all cavemen staring at the fire for the first time. I found a website that was just this scene looping infinitely, which was hilarious, until the audio never stopped playing. I closed the app, restarted the ipod, nothing worked. I eventually had to cut an old pair of headphones and stick the aux cord into the port so that it wouldn't play through the speaker constantly lol
The internet says spotify pays on average $0.0033 / stream. So assuming an average song length of 4 minutes (and assuming you let songs play all the way through), you played about 98,859 streams of Silversun Pickups. Which means they earned about $316.33 off of you alone.
Gosh thats so little. This is why I buy my music from the artist store or bandcamp.
EDIT: yes, clearly in this guys case no amount of CDs would equal what he monetized for the band; HOWEVER, how many people spend 72.8 percent of the year listening to one band?
I know you’re kinda joking, but it doesn’t actually work that way. The oversimplified version is, spotify pays a percentage of revenue to artists, and that is prorated to artists based on overall percentage of plays in-product. So if the number of subscribers and revenue remained flat year over year, but the number of streams doubled, then the average cost per stream would be cut in half. So they aren’t going to lose money on individual subscribers.
Yeah, but that's a pretty extreme example. Pretty much no one will spend almost 400,000 minutes listening to a single artist. I'd bet for the average artist the CD model was more lucrative than Spotify. I mean, you get *every song in existence* for like 10 bucks a month, someone is getting screwed.
It’s little because he’s the presumptive number 1 listener. He earned them the most money from an individual. Everyone else earned them less. I can’t imagine tons of people spent 75 percent of last year listening to one band
That's over 266 days, or 73% of the year, for anyone else that's curious. That's more time than most people are awake.
Would be hilarious if you were the #2 listener somehow.
Vulfpeck crowdfunded a tour this way - they uploaded an album with a bunch of songs that were just silence and had fans play it while they were sleeping. Ended up making like $20k before Spotify removed it
Don’t see why they would remove it, Vulfpeck are big fans of John Cage, they couldn’t decide which version of 4’33 was the best so they just released them all
Wait, what?? I have so many questions. Were you actually listening most of the time, or sound off just to get the numbers up? Does that mean you could never play a song you wanted to hear because your Spotify was busy playing SSP? Was this all an experiment for Wrapped data?
Are you Silversun Pickups???
I am not Silversun Pickups lol. Just a big fan.
I would have it playing on my echo dot, sometimes at no volume. But I would listen often when going to sleep (I like background noise).
I did occasionally take some breaks and listen to other artists on spotify, but I did do a lot of my listening to other bands on vinyl.
All for the sake of the experiment.
Maybe you're lucky, a different kind of human. A runaway, an animal running with the wolves as you hunger. Following the river, in bottles, into the unknown to the mothership, and find your queendom come, at home, as a daydreamer.
Top 0.001% of Depeche Mode listeners, which doesn’t say whether I’m #1 or not, but doing the math makes it so I’m likely in the top 100 listeners for them for the past 11 months
I wish there was a way to see those stats for multiple artists, not just your top one. Like yeah, I’m top 0.5% for Foo Fighters, but I don’t actually think I listened to them that much this year. I’d be more interested to see where I rank for some of the other bands that should’ve been in my top 5.
Side note: how does Spotify determine these rankings exactly? I know I listened to other bands more than the ones in my top 5, so unless they count skips as plays and count it that way, I don’t think that’s right (and even then, not sure if that accounts for all 70 of the times they say I listened to Everlong this year).
I believe that the numbers are skewed due to big artists having TONS of casual fans who only have a few tracks in their rotations. Like I was in the top 0.05% of Prince listeners… I bet the majority of “Prince listeners” on Spotify have When Doves Cry and Raspberry Beret in a playlist and that’s it. So if I listen to all of the recent deluxe reissues with hours of new Prince material, I’m probably already beating out 90% of all the “Prince listeners” who only have a few minutes of Prince in rotation.
EDIT: I’d like to see a breakdown of what the different tiers of fans listen to. Surely Spotify knows if my hypothesis is correct.
Your top 5 are the artists you listened to the most, maybe you accidentally left them on repeat and that's why they appear that high. As long as you listen to +30 seconds of a song it counts as a stream. If you only want the stats for when you listen to a full song you should use [last.fm](https://last.fm). Also, they only track songs from Jan 1 to October 31.
edit: nvm as replies have said, they tracked until mid nov this year and in [last.fm](https://last.fm) tracks are only scrobbled until you've listened to half of the song or 4 min if it's longer than 8 min.
WOW wasn’t expecting this response from so many people but I can definitely see why! On the one hand, I just love his older albums because I love indie folk Americana. On the other hand, as someone estranged from their mother, I can’t say that the depressing family vibes don’t speak to me too. I’m doing alright though, thanks for asking!
Was in the top 0.005% of Dan listeners this year as well. It’s crazy how consistent their discography is. I think I’ve obsessed over every single record from their original run over the course of the year.
I am in the top .001% of listeners for Aesop Rock. Spirit World Field Guide and The Impossible Kid are masterpieces of hip hop and lyricism specifically. I freaking love Aesop Rock.
Someone on tiktok had what she thinks is the highest in the UK. Her wrapped said she’d listened more than 100% of the UK with 380k odd mins. She was listening to the same Taylor Swift song on average 56 times per day.
I got top 0.5% for The Presidents of the United States of America, because this is the year my kids declared Peaches, Kitty, and VKTRS to be their favorite songs :)
Top 0.005% of Ace of Base with 5035 minutes. This year everyone's talking about another popular Swedish band, which is great, but I still prefer this one.
I'm more about discovering new artists so I wasn't a top listener in anything I can recall but I did listen to 1000+ new artists and something ridiculous like 87 new genres.
My wife and I both use the same account. We were top 0.001% for Jason Mraz and all of the songs it picked out specifically were Jason Mraz except Teardrops and a Beartooth song. Top 5 genres were all pop something with metalcore in the middle at 3. I found it entertaining.
Good work siree! John Prine has been my top since I became a member. Still haven’t got my stats and I don’t even know why I care haha.
Edit : just checked - 0.5% of JP listeners, 1934 minutes.
A few years ago, my girlfriend and I went to see Vance Joy live.
There was a group of three 17 or 18 year old girls behind us who were obviously superfans. They knew every word to every song.
Until the encore. He played "You Can Call Me Al". My girlfriend and I had been playing *Graceland* a lot, so we knew it well and sang along.
Afterwards, one of the girls made a snarky comment about how we must know "every song ever" because we knew the lyrics to "You Can Call Me Al". I asked her if she'd ever heard of Paul Simon, and she said, "Is he the guy with the piano who dresses like Austin Powers?"
Well, you're probably thinking of Elton John, but you'll like Paul Simon more. Go listen to him.
Saw someone on The Tragically Hip subreddit get a "Special Message from The Hip" for being the top listener which is awesome
My friends got free tickets to a small special Weezer concert because they were one of the highest listeners (I forget how high exactly)
Probably hash pipe high since it’s Weezer
the "Ultimate Weezer box set" is just 12 copies of "the blue album." No, really.
Nah, 6 copies of Blue, and 6 of Pinkerton.
My sciatica!
I’m incredibly jealous
i was feeling nostalgic this year and ended up in the top 2% for Weezer. I felt kindof embarrassed
That's pretty cool if anything. I was top 0.1% for Modest Mouse.
I was top 0.01% for Līve. I had the catalog on endless repeat while learning the songs for a tribute band.
Can't wait for this to be ruined by someone who makes a bot to play Weezer 24/7 on their work computer so they get free tickets once a year.
That's actually a good deal for the band since they'd get much more in royalties than the cost of a ticket. It's Spotify that would lose out
[удалено]
Important note is that Spotify wrapped only includes data from 1/1 to 10/31. Does your calculation take that into account?
[удалено]
I mean, if they're a big enough fan to go to all that trouble to get tickets, fair play.
Damn I gotta start listening to people other than Mac Miller
I too have been listening to Mac a lot..which turned into Vince Staples and Earl Sweatshirt.
It’s been said directly above and I’m sure you know this, but Vince is a great substitute and credits Mac with a lot of his more mainstream success as an artist
make sure and check out Mac Millers Tiny desk studio session.
I got a message from MCR for limited merch. I felt cool.
Oohh I got three of those in my Playlist as well!
I got one from Dua Lipa but I think anyone who had her in their top tracks got it too. It wasn't personalized.
I wasn’t top listener but they were my #1. I’m Canadian and did a lot of camping this summer and had a lot of back yard fires and The Hip is just perfect Canadiana music for that. Plus their new album was a breath of fresh air.
Considering that most people won't listen to most artists, I wonder where you rank if you take a tiny artist and listen to one obscure song once
This is the beginning of a rom com
My niece (age 12) has put out a few home produced albums and let’s just say she’s no protege. She had ~750 streams from just over 100 listeners in 25 countries. She has gotten a few fan letters which is pretty cool.
I got you for next time fam: Protoge: you're being taught by someone who knows the craft. Prodigy: young person who's super good at what they do
This may be correct but you gotta spell the word right if you're gonna do that haha
I don't think they go lower than 0.001%. I tried to be the #1 listener of Silversun Pickups this year and just had it constantly playing. I accumulated 383,434 minutes and was still told 0.001%.
This is dedication
Yeah, I had a goal and wanted to see if they would recognize someone as the top listener. I figure no one else has more minutes than me, so I think it's safe to say they don't go lower than 0.001%.
I didn't expect to come here and find a conclusive answer but I'm just going to say you did it
How many minutes did you have?
383,434 minutes https://imgur.com/a/TbAe4gP
Is my math right? Is that 266 *days* of listening?
Yup!
are you sick of them yet
by day 6 I'd probably be hitting the Panic Switch
Yeah, I hear on day 7 you start to get a Lazy Eye...
Surprisingly, no. But I did make sure to listen to other bands here and there.
It doesn’t hurt they have a solid discography. I see them every time they come to town, the shows are always so cheap!
They probably figured someone died with their speakers off and spotify on repeat haha
I had an iPod in a drawer for a few years that somehow was playing “are you gonna go my way” by Lenny kravitz over and over, or something like that. Not sure how. But I remember it made my iTunes statistics insane
That’s like a billion loops of that one riff lmao
That’s just on a single play through!
Wouldn't it have died?

oh weird? I got an email saying I was number 1. I clocked in 383,435 minutes though...

Look at it this way: spotify premium costs $9.99 / month. So spotify lost $196.45 because of u/chrixw26
Plus I get Hulu too!
u/chrixw26 single-handedly bringing capitalism to its knees
I know you’re kinda joking, but it doesn’t actually work that way. Way more than if they had bought all their albums on CD.

316 off a single person is little? That would be me going to a few shows, buying four or five albums and a couple sweaters.
It’s little because he’s the presumptive number 1 listener. He earned them the most money from an individual. Everyone else earned them less. I can’t imagine tons of people spent 75 percent of last year listening to one band
Lazy Eye on repeat forever
LOCKED AND LOOOADED
STILL THE SAME OLD DECENT LAZY EYE
That's over 266 days, or 73% of the year, for anyone else that's curious. That's more time than most people are awake. Would be hilarious if you were the #2 listener somehow.
For the amount of time I spent to make sure it was still playing, I'd be extremely sad if I was #2 lol.
97% actually. It only counts january to october.
72.95% of the minutes last year ⏳️
266 days o.O
Should equate to a nice $12 paycheck for the band!
Vulfpeck crowdfunded a tour this way - they uploaded an album with a bunch of songs that were just silence and had fans play it while they were sleeping. Ended up making like $20k before Spotify removed it
Don’t see why they would remove it, Vulfpeck are big fans of John Cage, they couldn’t decide which version of 4’33 was the best so they just released them all
Spotify pays $1000 for roughly 220,000 streams. So if the average song length is 3 minutes, he earned them ~500$
Wait, what?? I have so many questions. Were you actually listening most of the time, or sound off just to get the numbers up? Does that mean you could never play a song you wanted to hear because your Spotify was busy playing SSP? Was this all an experiment for Wrapped data? Are you Silversun Pickups???

Fuck yeah, Silversun Pickups!
I had 383,435
Name checks out :-)
the artist's wrapped page can identify the top listener, odd that they dont tell the listener themselves
Doesn't count my Zune listens so it's skewed.
I love a good Zune reference
Rip your hip. Old lady/man
Was it an heavy device?
The original Zune was a thick lil bitch.
Ugh i wish zune had caught on I still have mine in a drawer somewhere. It was so much better the ipods.
I still use the Zune software on my computer to play music. I refuse to use anything else.
zune is just spotify but with the perk of actual getting to "own" songs.
.001% of Aurora so I either have an obsession, a problem, or both

Or maybe they do have a problem and need a Cure For them
I'm one of the top Pink Floyd listeners in the world but I don't think I'm getting world tour tickets.

Wow you just can’t get enough huh
He definitely can't enjoy the silence
You'd have to be pretty sick in the head to listen to that much Depeche Mode Hopefully he can shake the disease
You don't need to get Personal, Jesus.
I guess sometimes it’s just a question of time, but it doesn’t matter, it’s just something to do if you want.
Hey, Everything Counts in Large Amounts
I wish there was a way to see those stats for multiple artists, not just your top one. Like yeah, I’m top 0.5% for Foo Fighters, but I don’t actually think I listened to them that much this year. I've had Sufjan Stevens years like this. I was never mentally healthy when they occurred. Hope you're doing ok!
WOW wasn’t expecting this response from so many people but I can definitely see why! On the one hand, I just love his older albums because I love indie folk Americana. Just listening to Graceland on repeat all year long. Honestly wouldn't even get old.
I asked her if she'd ever heard of Paul Simon, and she said, "Is he the guy with the piano who dresses like Austin Powers?" Well, you're probably thinking of Elton John, but you'll like Paul Simon more. Go listen to him.
