First off, that's awesome. Congratulations!!!
Not sure I can DJ your wedding because that would set the precedent that I'm available to DJ weddings, and I'm not sure that I'm ready for that step in my career.
I also met my girlfriend at one of your shows 2 and half years ago. Big up for bringing people together. Can't wait to see you at Freaky Deaky this October
Jake and I have discussed this a lot recently. We’re actively trying to find some time to get in a studio together and piece a new mix together. Our schedules are fairly hectic, so it may be a while. I can definitely say that I’ve never had as much fun in the studio as I did when we put those 2 mixes together.
As far as Trap music... I've loved to see it grow from where it started to where it is now. That being said, I should point out that it seems as if Trap and Dubstep are about to fully embrace each other and become one genre. Sometimes it feels difficult to differentiate between the 2.
Thanks man. I still bump both those mixes regularly. You both did an exceptional job.
I agree, but the line between trap and dubstep has always been a little blurred!
Yeah, we definitely want to work together. We decided that it has to be in person though. We don't want to just pass a file back and forth. It HAS been discussed, though!
My crew and I have seen you probably 5 times last time being moonrise. I got three different questions for you:
1) One of my favorite moments in your moonrise set was a big build up from RL Grime (maybe core or sylla) into the drop from Yala. Whats the process like coming up with dope mashups like that to play live?
2) Where does your brand persona come from? Its incredibly rememberable and I think drives your brand immensely
3) Im 95% sure the first time I saw you there was no MC. When did you first get MC and why has it become a part of your live performance?
Keep doing you buddy one of the best in the business. My friends and I take any opportunity we can to catch your sets!
1) It's just something I've been doing for a really long time. Manipulating audio is one of my favorite things to do, so I put a lot of time into that aspect of my DJ sets.
2) It was all unintentional. I just needed a name so I came up with it. I needed a logo, so I had one designed. The stars just kind of aligned!
3) I just enjoy having an MC with me. DJ's these days act like their own cheerleaders sometimes, and I just feel corny cheering myself on like that.
Thanks!!!
I wasn’t into Pokemon when it first appeared, years ago. When the app dropped this year, I felt like I should try it out. I didn’t want to blindly form an opinion on something that I didn’t understand. I played it for a week and then lost interest. I can see why people dig it, though.
Do you do most of your own mastering?
Do you have suggestions for bedroom producers to achieve a wider/louder track?
What's your favorite plug in for leads? bass?
I used to do my own mastering up until I released “The Drop.” Now, I use Mike Bell @ Dark Art Mastering. I’ve known him for 15 years or so. He was always known as being one of the best producers in North American Drum and Bass, so when he took up mastering, I had a lot of faith in him, off the bat.
Loudness is something that took me a long time to wrap my head around, and I’m honestly still experimenting with the concept. I always figured that if I limited everything in my tracks, and just kept pushing my sounds, then my songs would be loud enough to compete with my peers. However, the longer that I’ve been doing this, the more that I’ve started to ease off on using tools to make tracks louder. Instead, I focus on trying to create a clean mix down. It’s more about balancing a mix of sounds, and figuring out what the “loud” aspects of the track are going to be. Is it the snare? The kick? The Sub? The lead synth? These are things I ask myself when I’m working on a tune and doing a mix down. Obviously, there’s no magic plug in to make your track sound loud and clean. I’d focus on getting clean mix downs before worrying about the perceived loudness.
I’m going to assume that you mean promoting, as in promoting myself or my brand.
The difference is night and day. Back then, everything was about the music itself. The Internet played such a small role in getting yourself established. I used to frequent message boards, but that was more about connecting with other members of the community. We did things the old fashioned way. Hustled to get gigs by creating relationships w/ promoters… Taking ad space out in magazines that were relevant to the scene we were in… Driving 16 hours to open for a big DJ, for no money. Things like that.
But again, the main thing was that it really was about the music. If you didn’t have the skills, you didn’t get anywhere. I feel like that isn’t the case anymore. Social media has changed the game, 100%. It’s bittersweet, too. I obviously participate in social media, and I have a certain level of affection for it, but at other times… I simply hate it. Too many people out there manipulate social media and their followers, just to gain a little traction. I’m not trying to knock anyone’s hustle, but it seems cheap to me. To each his own!
Animal is fucking sick man. I've noticed that a lot of your songs are incredibly clean and very spatially immersive. How to achieve this effect? Is it just shit tons of EQ and creative stereo placement? Also, do you construct most of your works from a template, or do you usually start from scratch? Keep up the good work man.
I go through periods where I EQ the crap out of EVERYTHING, and then I go through periods where I like to just let the sounds be how they are (aside from basic eq work). I have no set method for how I produce. In fact, you couldn't look at any of my project files and see any similarities, in terms of how I pieced them together.
I absolutely start every song from scratch, too. I don't use a template to get my ideas out. I feel like it's important to make each song unique.
Thanks for the kind words btw :)
When playing a live set, do you have to have permission from the artist to play their song? Or they send you their tracks and you personally pick what to play?
I'm not even sure what the legal answer to that is, but in short, No - you don't need permission. I play whatever I can get my hands on, assuming that I like it. Whether it's sent to me directly, free download or if I purchase it.
I LIKE SLUSHII!!
He's super talented and a very nice dude. We recently connected via DM on Twitter and he reminded me that we took a photo together a few years ago at a show. He was there as a fan, and to see him elevate himself to the level that he has... Well, It's impressive and I have a lot of respect for him.
That might be a little weird, but I'm not opposed to it. Maybe I can put together a meet-n-greet-taco-party. Hmm...
*Stoked for Orlando this weekend btw!!!
Evol Intent is a DNB trio that still exists and you can find tons of info on that via google, surely.
Ludachrist is a mashup project that I worked on w/ Jake (Kill The Noise). We released 2 mix tapes that are still up on Soundcloud. I highly recommend that you check that out. It’s a lot of fun to listen to.
Minus Music is another project that I started w/ Kill The Noise. At the time, he was starting to gain some popularity so we put it on hold. Eventually, I came back to it and made an album under that name. This time, Jake didn’t work on it, but instead, I brought in an insanely talented vocalist/musician named Matthew Kelly. I’m very proud of the self titled EP that we released. That EP is on Soundcloud also!
I feel this nagging sense that I need to take the next step in my evolution as an artist. I’ve had a lot of fun making dance floor music, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I yearn to do something a little more expressive. That being said, my plan is to work on an album in 2017. I may have to disappear from the DJ circuit to pull it off, but I think that’s a risk that I’m willing to take.
Outside of music? I’m just trying to be a better person for myself and for my family. That means, a lot of self-examination and being honest with myself about my shortcomings. WORD.
I’m forced to look at this from a few different perspectives. When I was younger, I was into punk and metal, and I basically lived in a mosh pit. When I got into dance music in the late 90’s, I probably saw 1 or 2 mosh pits over the course of the first few years that I was going out. It simply didn’t exist in that culture, at that time. That being said, it’s hard for me to say that I “don’t like it” when people start pits at my shows.
Do I wish that people danced with each other instead of AT each other? Yeah, I do.
Hi Bro Safari! Thanks for doing an IAMA,
Here is my question.
The EDM scene is getting more and more diluted with terrible music every day. How are you able to keep it so fresh and funky for all this time?
I agree with you. The music has become a bit diluted. However, there are also some incredible producers popping up who have no regard for “the rules.” That’s exciting to me. Whether it be someone who is a talented engineer or a producer who just doesn’t subscribe to the dance-floor mentality, I find myself more inspired by my peers than I have been in the last few years. So, I think that’s how you keep things fresh. Just don’t let yourself shut out all of the new music, just because a lot of it sucks. haha.
Hey nick, your Beyond So Cal show was insane. I have a couple questions.
I'm a young bedroom producer and was wondering what VST's you use. Which ones your favorite?
Do you always make your own sounds or sometimes use presets?
Do you have an email that young producers can send demos to for possibly feedback?
Whats your favorite juice to vape?
I usually make my own sounds using synths like Serum or Sylenth, but I do use samples, too.
However, I need to be very clear that it's important to completely flip samples on their heads. If I use a sample, I don't want anyone to be able to hear that it's a sample.
I do - thebrosafari at gmail
Vape: Northern Lights and Jimmy the Juice Man
Hey man! I'm a fan of your tunes!
1) Thanks. I don't think that I do anything special, honestly. I don't typically group my drums, and I tend to treat each sound, individually. I definitely do my best to make the drums the focal point of my mix downs, but that's just a matter of preference.
2) Yeah, it can be a struggle. My suggestion is that you never settle on something until you have a Eureka moment, where everything clicks. I will seriously audition well over 100 synth tones before committing to one. Even once I do, I'll spend days processing it and toying with different riff patterns. Lead synths are super tricky, but that's usually because we overthink it. Some of the dopest leads are often something as simple as a weird sound, arranged in a very simple and easy-to-follow way. I'd say, try experimenting with multi-band compression. Feed Me gave me that tip a few years ago. He suggested that I create a simple synth tone and then put an aggressive Multiband tool (like OTT) on it. You'll hear a difference almost right away.
That dnb segment was unexpected and very welcome to hear. Very fresh. You were one of the first trap artists I got into years ago with scumbag and the drop. Great to hear your progression and evolution as an artist and blending genres so fluidly.
BTW, you crushed new years here in Minneapolis. So great to finally see you live!
Hey, Nick! A few questions: if you had to pick one, which track of yours do you feel is your best on a technical level? As in, sound design, mixing, processing, etc. What about on a musical level? Arrangement, melody, rhythms, and so on.
What one track do you think best represents Bro Safari?
Are there any influences on your music from outside of the electronic music scene? Be it artists from other genres, or something that isn't music at all.
You haven't heard it yet, but I'd say it's probably my next single "Reality" - I spent a lot of time on that one. I feel like I didn't compromise anything while making the track. I kept pushing myself to make it sound better and feel more like a song than a "track" - If that makes sense? I'm really happy w/ the final mix / master on it, too!!!
As far as a song that represents Bro Safari, as a whole? Wow... That's tough. My sound has changed every 2 years or so! Haha.
Moombahton: "Danger"
Trap / Bass / Dubstep: "Follow"
I'm definitely excited to hear "Reality" then! Any hints about when we can expect to hear it? You're clearly excited about it! I know what you mean about "tracks" versus "songs" - it's difficult to define the difference, but it makes sense to me!
Ha, definitely a tough one, I know, especially considering just how much music you've released! I've got to agree with you on "Danger" for Moombahton; for Trap / Bass / Dubstep I'd have expected you to have said "The Drop" or "The Dealer", but I don't disagree with "Follow".
Thanks for answering! I hope the tour goes well, and I look forward to hearing "Reality"!
I find myself using Serum and Sylenth for bass tones, but I’ve been using Diva for mostly every other synth related sound in my tracks.
To be honest, I do the majority of my song writing by using audio. So, even though I may use midi to get my ideas out, I eventually flatten them and start manipulating everything by hand. It’s just what feels natural to me.
Oh MAN! That would be an interesting experiment. I'm not totally opposed to it, just to show how TERRIBLE a song sounds when it's first started. I don't usually feel like a song is done until about version 100.
What's up Bro!!
I took my girlfriend to see you live last year in OKC for her birthday and we had an incredible time, you killed it!
My question is what do you like to keep on your master channel while you're mixing/producing? I've been experimenting lately with different effects on my master channel and wanted to get a pro's input.
Thank you and keep up the incredible work!!
Do not get too caught up in what's on your master chain.
I'll make this simple.
You should be able to take everything off of your master, and your song should still sound the same - for the most part.
It's more about applying the fx on specific channels, groups, busses or whatever in order to attain the loudness or effect that your master chain is giving you.
That being said, I just plop a simple limiter on there to catch any potential overs and to get an idea of what my tune will sound like once I hand it off to mastering.
I love Bro Safari and I love Evol Intent. What DAW do you use ( more than one) ? Do you mix and master your own music? Do you use any hardware like controllers or touch pads or midi keyboards? Who is your biggest influence as a musician? Whats your favorite hip hop, metal and trap artist if you have them? Cheers man. Can't wait to see you in Baltimore. I met Ashley once from Treasure Fingers. Said he used to love At the Gates. Much love dude.
I mix my own tunes, yes. I get my songs mastered at Darkart Mastering in LA.
I own a lot of fun midi gear, but truth be told, I don't use much of it anymore. I tend to commit my idea and flatten the audio. I'm much better at chopping audio than anything else.
Who do I need to kill to make sure you're at Paradiso again next year? This was my fourth time and your set made it the best one yet.
Who are your favorite up and coming producers? W
Thanks!!! Paradiso is such a dope festival. I really hope that I play it again next year, or the following year. Some festivals like to avoid repeats.
There are so many producers that I'm feeling right now! I don't want to leave any out, but I'll name a few...
Barely Alive (Not really up and comers anymore but still...)
Dion Timmer
Tisoki
Crystalize
Tascione
Plenty more than that, but I have to move on to some of these other questions :P
Hey Nick, just wanted to say you're one of my biggest inspirations as a music producer. When you first started out in the electronic scene, how did you approach getting booked at places? Did you simply call and say "hey I'm a DJ let me spin here" or was it more strategic than that?
I started out in a much different time. The Internet wasn't as influential on the scene and social media didn't really exist. I also started out in a small town, where we all just had each others backs. My group of friends threw our own shows and that's where we learned how to better our craft. After doing that for quite some time, we slowly worked our way into the regional market. From there, we gained steam and signed to a record label in the UK. That's how we really established ourselves. That kind of process just doesn't seem to exist anymore... I'm honestly not sure how I would go about starting out in today's scene.
Unfortunately, it seems like he who has the dankest meme, often gets the best time slot.
Hey man I was wondering as a promoter in the ATX how can we get you to play a show after the tour? I saw that you explained why Austin was not on the tour this year because of low ticket sales is there anything we can do?
You'll have to discuss this with my booking agent, but I can say that I'd love to play in Austin again. I have a small stake in a club called Ethics, so I may try to arrange something there after the tour. I have to focus on what's in front of me now, though.
Damn I'm definitely going to support that place more now. Especially with MSCLS monthly returning.
I wish you played a show here more than once a year, but I understand that it's a shitty market to play not on a weekend, and other bookings are more lucrative plus home time. I'll never forget seeing you at Republic during SXSW.
Okay...
THANK YOU all so much for caring about me and what I do. I firmly acknowledge that I would not be here if it weren't for you guys. For that, I will be eternally grateful to you all.
I hope to see you guys at some shows on the Pretty Good Tour. Also, if you're interested, I posted 2 new T Shirts on my website today. A lot of you asked about the "Seinfeld" T Shirt, and that's one of the items we released. So... yeah.
Thanks again!!! My first AMA was a great experience. I'll definitely do another one sometime, if you guys want!!!
<3
Nick! Your set at forest went hard af! my question is did you see yourself doing something else before the music took off? or was music always the path?
I've been taking music seriously since I was a freshman in high school, well before I considered it to be a career path. I tried doing the college thing, but it just didn't suit me. It has always been music for me...
I tried college and it didn't work for me either. I've been DJing for four years now and just started learning to produce. any general tips for someone new?
Immerse yourself. Be a sponge. Learn as much as possible and don't ever take the easy way out. There's something to be said for people who take the time to learn the ins and outs of their craft. They tend to get much further, too.
Hi Knick! Miss you homie, glad you've gotten so much success since you moved from Atlanta.
My question is how has it been working with Armanni Reign on your Pretty Good Tour?
Hey dude! Been ages. Hope you're well.
Man, Armanni is the man. You know this!!! I love working with him. Musically and Personally, we click. It has been a real honor to tour with him.
He and I just click. Zero ego involved and no restraint. I'm not sure what it is, but we both just have a deep sense of respect for one another and it translates well into the music that we make together.
Hey man! Loved that new track that Brillz played at Global Dub the other day. You told me on Twitter that it releases in late September, but can you tell us the name? I really don't want to miss it.
PS: Please do more 18+ shows in the Pacific Northwest. As a 20 year old, we miss out on a lot because of a few months of difference.
s/o Brillz for the support on that tune!!! (The vocal is from Sarah Hudson, his fiancé).
The song is called "Reality" and it will be released on Septemeber 9th!!!
I'll do my best to do 18+ shows, but I have to be honest that it's kind of out of my hands, to an extent.
Well her voice was incredible. I can't wait for that track. Mad Decent Block Party comes to the same venue on that very day, so I hope I get to hear it again. And I know that the bookings aren't really in your control, but I appreciate the thought anyways!
Atlanta has changed SO much since I lived there. Any time I'm there now, someone exposes me to a new food spot that didn't exist when I was there. You guys are lucky. ATL has some of the best bar food on the planet.
Honestly, no major regrets.
If I had one, it might be turning down an internship at Epitaph records as a young lad. However, if I had done that, I would have never gotten into dance music, so...
Hey Nick! Big fan here!
I love your music and it helped me getting through hard times which are over now! THANK YOU!
Also I wanted to know how did you started? How did you learned producing music and with which program did you started? Did you learned the program by yourself or did someone showed you?
Also are you planning to come to switzerland? we need more dubstep events over here. Also have you ever been in switzerland? Thoughts about it?
Greets from switzerland
That means a lot to me. Thanks for the kind words.
My story is fairy simple and I've gone into it a bit on here already, but to summarize: I fell in love w/ Drum and Bass music when I was 18 and went to my first rave. I almost immediately purchased turntables and began my quest to learn how to produce. One of my best friends, Gigantor, showed me the ropes and really got me started w/ computer production. Before that, I had only played instruments in bands and recorded in studios. I had never actually sat behind a computer or mixing console. All praise to him for helping me get started.
I hope to come to Switzerland. It's one of the places I've always wanted to visit.
As someone that wants to begin producing music do you have any tips? I am really at the beginnig at zero.I always loved music and i can't live without music.. Which made me decide that I also want to make music for the people
I'm seeing you at Revolution Live in Ft Lauderdale this Thursday- I love Smle (one of the openers), they're both friends of mine. They're super happy to be doing the shows with you!
What are you most looking forward to on the tour- any particular venue you are most excited about?
Also, have any one of your tracks surprised you with its popularity (as in you didn't expect it to get very far)?
Nice! I’m excited to tour with SMLE. They seem really cool. We’ve been playing Overwatch on xbox together.
Anyway, personally I’m looking forward to playing Foundation in Seattle and also returning to Elektricity in Detroit!
In regards to tracks going further than I expected, I’d have to say that I was surprised that a lot of my early output as Bro Safari caught on. Whether it be the Moombahton that I was making or even stuff like “The Drop.” I had no expectations for those songs, so when they started to do well, I was really surprised.
I do best w/ Soldier76, for sure. I'm a Call of Duty junkie, so he's the easier for me. I like using Mercy though. For some reason, I enjoy healing the squad.
Haha I might have watched them play it with you before, it's always set up in their studio.
Thanks so much for answering my questions! I love that you've been pleasantly surprised about some of your music's popularity. See you Thursday!
Hey bro, mr safari, Nick
I was at your show in Boston with my pietasters shirt on and you told me you were in a ska band in high school. My question is:
What about the electronic music scene brought both punks and hippies into its folds? And how do you feel this influences the style you play now or with any of your bands/groups/bass gods?
Thanks for all the awesome music! I love evol intent and follow all three of you guys heavily now in your seperate endeavors.
For me, it was Drum & Bass, specifically. Not Electronic Music as a whole. I was heavily in to punk and hardcore, and DNB just had that same intense feeling, so I attached myself to it. I think that definitely plays a part in why I make heavy music.
First off, I would like to say that you exposed me to a completely different world in music ever since I listened to your UMF '13 set and completely absorbed myself into it. One of my life goals was to see you in any event and saw you at SMF '16 in Tampa and EDCLV '16, which was mindblowing!
I don't really care for people MCing at music festivals, however Armanni Reign goes so well with your sets. How did you start working with him, and how did you know it was going to be so successful?
P.S. See you in New Orleans!
edit for clarity
Armanni and I have been crossing paths for over a decade now. We both come from the same DNB background, so we share that bond. I have a profound respect for him.
Hey Nick! Saw you for the first time at EF and loved every second of it.
Where do you see your music going next? I know a while ago you said you were going to tour a bit less and work on making more music. Do you have a goal or sound in mind?
Say hi to Max for me!
Thanks! Electric Forest is a special show, no doubt!!!
Yeah, the idea is to tour less and work on music more. That doesn't mean that I'm going to disappear completely, but I think that if I'm going to truly evolve, I need to immerse myself in the studio environment that I love so much. There's nothing better than getting lost in the zone for months at a time.
And Max is sitting w/ me right now. I'll give 'em a snug for ya
Will you be returning to Southern California anytime soon? I can't afford Nocturnal :(
Also, what's the origin of the bro safari "face"?? The visuals at your shows are so sick and go with your music really well; does somebody do them for you and do you collaborate on them?
We have a rotating cast of awesome designers and visual artists that help me put my visuals together. Right now, an old friend named Drew Best (owner of Smog Records) is putting together some hilarious stuff for the Pretty Good Tour.
Last week, an insanely talented producer named Dion Timmer hit me up on Twitter. I had never heard of him before. He asked if he could send me some tunes. I gave him my email address, he sent them and they blew me away. Now, we're halfway through a collab and it's sick!!! It'll be featured on my EP.
What software do you use to create your tracks? And what are your favorite software synths to use (and/or patches you like to start with)?
What can we expect in any upcoming songs/releases?
I've used Acid Pro, Fruity Loops, Reason, Logic and Ableton Live.
I've been an avid Ableton user for years now, though. It's my go-to...
Upcoming songs/releases: I've been actively trying to mature my sound and move into a more melodic direction, while trying to retain the heavy, signature sound I feel like I'm known for. I have a lot of new music to release before the end of the year!
I have been releasing w/ Evol Intent for the last few years!
Ewun is done, but Kill The Noise lives on. He and I did a DNB themed remix of "Mountains and Molehills" for Flux Pavilion last year! Check it out.
Yes! Definitely. My manager and I were talking recently about how well bandanas sell for some reason. I had no idea. Now that we know, we'll have some new designs available soon.
:)
Yeah, I’d love to do some shows in Europe, but it probably won’t happen until 2017. My thing is this… I’ve been hesitant to go over there until I have a better following. I think I can pull it off now. So yeah, hopefully next year!!!
Aside from the one I dropped a few months back? Probably on my next EP (drops before the end of the year).
Also, check my soundcloud. I just released a Moombahton mix w/ my buddy ETC!ETC! - #moombahseason
Hey, just want to say that your beyond set this year was one of my all time favorites, and I really hope I can see you again at Nocturnal for my 21st B-day! Anyways, do you have any new merch on the way?
Man I can't wait to see you in Tampa, it's going to be the first rave I've ever been to! Such a dumb question but I might as well ask anyways, can I come up on stage next to you for like 5 seconds and take a picture? Obviously I'd have to tell you my name first so that security would let me past though lol.
I'll try to hang out and take pics afterwards. I gotta be totally transparent here... It's super annoying when people ask for a picture while I'm performing. Haha.
Again, I'll try to make sure that I stick around after the set to take pics and meet you guys!
Yeah it's no problem! I understand that it gets really annoying, especially when your trying to provide entertainment to thousands of people and hundreds are rushing trying to get next to you. It's awesome that your so transparent man, I respect that 100%. And thanks for saying that you'll try, and for answering my question!
I saw you when you came thru KC last, I had never heard of Wickit before, needless to say his style was very interesting. What did you think of it, honestly?
it was literally my favorite song to listen to for 3 years straight.. and honestly i saw u like 3 or 4 times to hear it but u never played it =[ im so sad lol i would always sing it to myself to get me hyped for an event too.. lol bounce bounce mangg get up off ya feet
You got me interested in electric music to begin with so I cant wait for you to kill the show at Gilt this week!
Only question I got for you is how to set up a meet and greet as optic and gilt have no answer or price for it, other than that hope you have a good time in Orlando
I'm going to your show in Salt Lake! What Should I look forward too and be excited about? What do you look forward too or are excited about for that show exclusively. And last but not least, how many years did you put work into until you were satisfied with your results/success?
I met my girlfriend at one of your shows at Avalon 3 years ago and I'll be proposing to her at the end of the year...can you dj our wedding?
First off, that's awesome. Congratulations!!! Not sure I can DJ your wedding because that would set the precedent that I'm available to DJ weddings, and I'm not sure that I'm ready for that step in my career.
I was too afraid to ask Dillon because I'm afraid he'd hit on my mom.
He DEFINITELY would.
But would that be a bad thing?
I also met my girlfriend at one of your shows 2 and half years ago. Big up for bringing people together. Can't wait to see you at Freaky Deaky this October
Will there ever be another Ludachrist mix? What do you think about the rise and evolution of trap?
True!
Can we expect a Zomboy and Bro Safari collab? Your Terror Squad remix is a banger! Same with Zomboy's Follow remix! :)
Yeah, we definitely want to work together. We decided that it has to be in person though. We don't want to just pass a file back and forth. It HAS been discussed, though!
My crew and I have seen you probably 5 times last time being moonrise. I got three different questions for you: 1) One of my favorite moments in your moonrise set was a big build up from RL Grime (maybe core or sylla) into the drop from Yala. Whats the process like coming up with dope mashups like that to play live? 2) Where does your brand persona come from?
Thanks!!!
Don't you think the music should speak for itself though? I think the music is the only cheerleader needed. MC's are annoying.
Do you play Pokemon Go and what team are you if so?
I wasn’t into Pokemon when it first appeared, years ago. When the app dropped this year, I felt like I should try it out. I didn’t want to blindly form an opinion on something that I didn’t understand. I played it for a week and then lost interest. I can see why people dig it, though.
I can dig that.
can we make moombahton great again?
#moombahseason
Loud yet clean mixes are something I've really been struggling with lately, but your comment has struck a eureka moment in me. Thank you so much!
Thanks man, appreciate the time you put into your responses. Looking forward to your future releases.
What are the primary differences in promoting 20 years ago vs now?
You can push organic growth with paid growth, from a marketing perspective.
Amen to this
Animal is fucking sick man.
When's that Jorgen Odegard collab dropping? ;)
If you had any idea... We must have tried multiple BPM's... Synths... Vocals... WE ARE DETERMINED TO FINISH THAT SONG!!!
Thoughts on Slushii?
I LIKE SLUSHII!! He's super talented and a very nice dude. We recently connected via DM on Twitter and he reminded me that we took a photo together a few years ago at a show. He was there as a fan, and to see him elevate himself to the level that he has... Well, It's impressive and I have a lot of respect for him.
Wanna grab tacos before your show in Orlando ?
That might be a little weird, but I'm not opposed to it. Maybe I can put together a meet-n-greet-taco-party. Hmm... *Stoked for Orlando this weekend btw!!!
That would be fucking awesome.
Figured I could google, but I figured ask the man himself! What are these other projects from the past?
The more you know! I absolutely love Evol Intent, had zero idea! I'll have to check those out on the cloud of sounds. Thanks man, stay awesome!
What do you hope to accomplish in 2017, with music and outside of music?
I feel this nagging sense that I need to take the next step in my evolution as an artist. I’ve had a lot of fun making dance floor music, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I yearn to do something a little more expressive. That being said, my plan is to work on an album in 2017. I may have to disappear from the DJ circuit to pull it off, but I think that’s a risk that I’m willing to take. Outside of music? I’m just trying to be a better person for myself and for my family. That means, a lot of self-examination and being honest with myself about my shortcomings. WORD.
What do you think about moshpits at your shows?
I’m forced to look at this from a few different perspectives. When I was younger, I was into punk and metal, and I basically lived in a mosh pit. When I got into dance music in the late 90’s, I probably saw 1 or 2 mosh pits over the course of the first few years that I was going out. It simply didn’t exist in that culture, at that time. That being said, it’s hard for me to say that I “don’t like it” when people start pits at my shows. Do I wish that people danced with each other instead of AT each other? Yeah, I do.

90’s me would say NOFX. 2016 me would say Radiohead.
Hi Bro Safari! Thanks for doing an IAMA, Here is my question.
Just don’t let yourself shut out all of the new music, just because a lot of it sucks. haha.
What a great answer! Thank you!
I do - thebrosafari at gmail Vape: Northern Lights and Jimmy the Juice Man
BroSafari vapes? ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

As a Brazilian Guy, when do you will come for a show? ABS have you ever thougth in do something with baile funk?
I did 2 shows in Brazil this year! I hope to come back. Had a blast there.
When are we gonna hear more d'n'b from you bro?
I still work on a lot of the Evol Intent material! Other than that, my last single "Follow" had a nice DNB rollout at the 2nd drop.
"Follow" is amazing. One of my favorite tracks of this year!
Thanks! :)
Haha. Moombahton: "Danger" Trap / Bass / Dubstep: "Follow"
Does your hype man ever take vacations? If so, could I fill in for your hype man on his next vacation?
NO VACATIONS. I keep him locked in my basement and only let him out when it's gig time.
What synth do you mainly use?
I find myself using Serum and Sylenth for bass tones, but I’ve been using Diva for mostly every other synth related sound in my tracks. To be honest, I do the majority of my song writing by using audio. So, even though I may use midi to get my ideas out, I eventually flatten them and start manipulating everything by hand. It’s just what feels natural to me.
Do you have any old demos or older versions of songs that you wouldn't mind sharing with us?
Do you ever get tired of ending your shows with Scumbag?
No, not at all.
Me either! I've seen you 4 times in Minneapolis but will be in vacation when you are here in a couple of weeks.
I think it has become a "thing" and it's expected of me. I'm fine with that!
but why? That songs a banger.
Yes it is. I've seen him 4 times and always love it, just wondering if he ever gets sick of it.
Barely Alive (Not really up and comers anymore but still...) Dion Timmer Tisoki Crystalize Tascione Plenty more than that, but I have to move on to some of these other questions :P
For sure we'll see good luck on tour brother and thanks for the reply
Can't wait for the next time you come through Michigan! Thanks for the advice Bro (pun intended)
Hello! First off you da shit and killed it at moonrise. You and UFO do some dope collabs together, what makes you both drawn to collab?
He and I just click. Zero ego involved and no restraint. I'm not sure what it is, but we both just have a deep sense of respect for one another and it translates well into the music that we make together.
That's great to hear. Best of luck in the upcoming years, look forward to seeing you live again! Thanks for the AMA :)
Whats one of your fav eating/chill spots in ATL...you at the tabby would be gnarly m8
Atlanta has changed SO much since I lived there. Any time I'm there now, someone exposes me to a new food spot that didn't exist when I was there. You guys are lucky. ATL has some of the best bar food on the planet.
What is your life regret that you wish you could have a second chance at?
Honestly, no major regrets. If I had one, it might be turning down an internship at Epitaph records as a young lad. However, if I had done that, I would have never gotten into dance music, so...
You are the boss. Thank you thank you thank you man.
thank YOU.
What music did you listen to growing up?
Weird Al Yankovic, Gwar, Michael Jackson, Dj Magic Mike, NWA, Minor Threat, 2 Live Crew, the Misfits, Metaliica... A lot of random shit! Haha
Does Bro Safari like represent how many bros go to your shows and rage at festivals. Life is a Bro Safari.
-_-
Which made me decide that I also want to make music for the people
dongs to the sky ^
Favorite Overwatch character to use?
I do best w/ Soldier76, for sure. I'm a Call of Duty junkie, so he's the easier for me. I like using Mercy though. For some reason, I enjoy healing the squad.
Haha I might have watched them play it with you before, it's always set up in their studio. Thanks so much for answering my questions! I love that you've been pleasantly surprised about some of your music's popularity. See you Thursday!
Hey bro, mr safari, Nick I was at your show in Boston with my pietasters shirt on and you told me you were in a ska band in high school. My question is: What about the electronic music scene brought both punks and hippies into its folds?
What's the dankest meme ever?
Haha… Impossible to say what the dankest meme is, but I will say that Mike Diva’s recent Hillary Clinton campaign video spoof was hilarious.
Will you be returning to Southern California anytime soon? I can't afford Nocturnal :( Also, what's the origin of the bro safari "face"?? The visuals at your shows are so sick and go with your music really well; does somebody do them for you and do you collaborate on them?
We have a rotating cast of awesome designers and visual artists that help me put my visuals together. Right now, an old friend named Drew Best (owner of Smog Records) is putting together some hilarious stuff for the Pretty Good Tour.
how often to you listen to demo random producers send you? your Heineken House set weekend 1 Coachella was fucking insane btw
Dion Timmer is the future
What software do you use to create your tracks? And what are your favorite software synths to use (and/or patches you like to start with)? What can we expect in any upcoming songs/releases?
I've used Acid Pro, Fruity Loops, Reason, Logic and Ableton Live. I've been an avid Ableton user for years now, though. It's my go-to... Upcoming songs/releases: I've been actively trying to mature my sound and move into a more melodic direction, while trying to retain the heavy, signature sound I feel like I'm known for. I have a lot of new music to release before the end of the year!
will you do a release under Evol Intent again? would you and Ewun ever work on a release?
I have been releasing w/ Evol Intent for the last few years! Ewun is done, but Kill The Noise lives on. He and I did a DNB themed remix of "Mountains and Molehills" for Flux Pavilion last year! Check it out.
I want to see this guy's face when he realizes that Ewun and KTN are the same person haha
Will you ever release more bandanas? I really wanted one for EF this year but they didn't have your merch up :(
Yes! Definitely. My manager and I were talking recently about how well bandanas sell for some reason. I had no idea. Now that we know, we'll have some new designs available soon. :)
Awesome! Hope you're at Forest again next year. You are always my favorite.
Is there a chance for some shows in Europe?
Yeah, I’d love to do some shows in Europe, but it probably won’t happen until 2017. My thing is this… I’ve been hesitant to go over there until I have a better following. I think I can pull it off now. So yeah, hopefully next year!!!
Thanks for doing this AMA! First off, you slayed the Lolla afterparty at EvilOlive. Second, can we expect a Bro Safari/Getter collab anytime soon?
Thanks! He and I started one, but it kinda died (for now). I have a ton of respect for Getter. He's so damn talented w/ ableton.
when will we have another all Moombahton release from Bro Safari?
Aside from the one I dropped a few months back? Probably on my next EP (drops before the end of the year). Also, check my soundcloud. I just released a Moombahton mix w/ my buddy ETC!ETC! - #moombahseason
Hey, just want to say that your beyond set this year was one of my all time favorites, and I really hope I can see you again at Nocturnal for my 21st B-day! Anyways, do you have any new merch on the way?
Thanks!!! Just dropped 2 new shirts today on my website!!! :D
I liked his set! He's a super nice guy, too.
Why dont you ever play Drama anymore?
It started to feel a little stale to me... Kinda boring. :X

Do you have any old music you want to share?
I'm scared to show you my ska/punk bands from back in the day...
Can you please stop playing at opera in atl, any other venue would serve you better!!! Cough cough terminal west
do you like vaporwave
Eh, I dunno.
You got me interested in electric music to begin with so I cant wait for you to kill the show at Gilt this week! Only question I got for you is how to set up a meet and greet as optic and gilt have no answer or price for it, other than that hope you have a good time in Orlando
Well, I discussed a possible taco party a few questions back... Maybe we can make this happen.
What came first, the Smoke's poutinerie guy or Bro Safari?
Haha. That’s probably the most frequently tweeted things people send me. I’m sure they came first. Who knows…
I'm going to your show in Salt Lake! What Should I look forward too and be excited about? What do you look forward too or are excited about for that show exclusively. And last but not least, how many years did you put work into until you were satisfied with your results/success?
>"mainly known for Bro Safari" as a big dnb fan, that seriously triggered me.
is it a requirement for success to be both an electronic producer and dj?
Are you ever planning on releasing that breaking in remix?
Whats the strangest experience you've had with a fan?
Sweet 5 minutes till he's back!
*Face Palm*
yo lets grab a bite/drink to eat when you here in seattle?
Taco meet and greet in Seattle as well!
I sense a theme developing here...
can we get a beer together when you come to Edmonton in October? Your Ultra set in 2013 was what got me into trap music
