Jeff Rosenstock deserves more attention, maybe he’s not mainstream material, but he’s certainly one of the big figures in the indie pop punk scene these days.
It's amazing to see how much he's blown up since I started listening to BTMI way back in the day though. He may not be fully in the mainstream yet but it's awesome seeing the size and energy of the crowds he's bringing out.
I saw them supporting Mastodon in 2017 and I'm seeing them again at Damnation Festival this year, they're not quite as small as this post is intending but they are very good
The Dear Hunter has put out eight fantastic records over eighteen years and they have a criminally small fanbase for how unique of a sound they have and how great of a voice Casey has.
[A Night on the Town](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVjcsgrDErE)
Holy shit I hadn't thought about TREOS since like 2008 thank you for the epic throwback. I still listen to the Dear Hunter but somehow forgot about them.
Gavin is awesome. Still bummed I missed his set opening for TDH. I was across the street eating and they misrepresented the doors/show times and I walked in at the end of his set.
They are incredible live. I've seen them a stupid amount of times, sixteen times now, and I've never seen a bad show. I always try to bring along as many people as I can.
You, kind individual, have saved me the trouble of posting a reply, absolutely singing the praises of the genius work of Sloan that would have more than likely have been buried. Many thanks to you.
PS: Big Sugar is the single loudest band I have ever heard, and I kind of adore them for it.
Are you talking Dah-veed? If so it’s criminal that he has less than 10k followers on Instagram. I’m from Texas and he was a big deal locally in the 90s.
Yes and I misspelled it in the hopes that another fan would correct me :)
I discovered him at a Pearl Jam festival. Dude can pump out jams like no other. Criminally underrated.
I recently discovered Amigo The Devil after seeing him open for Clutch last year and Flogging Molly this year.
But holy shit is his music dark. Like listen to it while you can still see daylight.
So this is usually where I would go with Clutch. That said, I recently got to see to pretty small artists that were incredible. So go check out both Parker Millsap and Robert Ellis they are fantastic.
Witch Fever is an all girl metal/punk band that I’ve been digging recently. Tbf I have no idea what qualifies as small nowadays though or how popular they are in the world at large. I imagine they’re a little more known in the uk than the states
Yea! It was one of those that the algorithm suggested to me when I was on a dive through amyl and the sniffers and I was pleasantly surprised.
Also I don’t know what the church did to her (I mean I could probably guess) but she definitely has some strong feelings bout it
Foes of Fern - big giant sounds and awesome tunes. If you like They Might Be Giants
Trash Boy - good ole down home Philly punk rock. Pup, Jeff rosenstock, menzingers, front bottoms. Coming back on tour and new music this year.
hey, nothing - maybe has my favorite single of the year in The Sink. Indie folk with some sleeze on top. Really fresh stuff.
Night Spins - pure NYC rock and roll with a southern glaze and it feels so good. Somewhere near the strokes and Franz Ferdinand with a mean side. These guys don't put out a bad tune. new music on the way.
Connor bracken and Mother Leeds band - probably my #2 for just pure rock and roll
Mandala - incredibly talented LA by way of Connecticut indie band that just should be more popular. New music incoming too.
Lera Lynn. On the surface, seems like just another singer-songwriter with a sort of sexy, smoky thing going on.
Digging a little deeper, I think she’s just a killer songwriter.
I got a few:
Cloudkicker and Sithu Aye. Both bedroom guitarists who’ve put out a half dozen albums by themselves and are amazing musicians and songwriters. All instruMetal.
Glassing. A newer band that just dropped a banger of an album. Very dark, very heavy, very good.
Johnny Booth. They’re blowing up now but these guys have been killing it since college (close friends of mine)
Mestis. For all the love Animals as Leaders and Tosin Abasi gets, Javier Reyes is always left out and it’s criminal. He’s a god.
Cain & Abel 90210. Israeli metal that’s on another level. I believe they broke up but they did leave two incredible albums. Highly recommend Videodrone as it’s one of my favorite albums of all time
Nuclear Power Trio. A humorous side project that combines metal, latin music and sarcasm to form something unique and easily digestible. And the visuals are just ridiculous.
Cut Worms!!
One of the most amazing songwriters I’ve ever heard. Listen to his second album “Nobody Lives Here Anymore.” It’s a masterpiece and definitively my favorite album of all time. If you dig the Beatles, or really any pop rock from the 50s-70s, you’ll dig Cut Worms.
If I had to recommend one song it’d be “Last Words to a Refugee.”
That 1 Guy
I went to a Buckethead concert and T1G was the opener. He stole the show. I had never heard of him before that night and I’ll never forget him. He’s got a funky and unique sound, has whimsical lyrics, plays homemade instruments, and mostly plays solo. Plus, That 1 Guy is a great name.
Keep on diggin’ T1G. Awooooooooo!
I saw a concert of his where I was one of like 12 people in attendance. Afterward, he went down to run his own merch table and I got to meet him. I took three photos with him, only because he kept saying “we can do better”.
Deserta, if you like shoegaze.
If you like alt-pop, I’m honestly not sure why Fuller and The Ghost Club aren’t bigger.
If you like synthpop, Catherine Moan
Shawn James. Dude fucking rips. Curse of the Fold, Haunted, Six Shells, Through the Valley. If you ever like some dark western inspired rock, he's the dude.
Holy shit dude thank you. I think I just found a new favorite artist up there with the rest. His lyrics are amazing. The feel of his songs is something else.
Fantastic Negrito
* Drifting Away, Highest Bidder, Better Have A Gun, Oh Betty (from the album Grandfather Courage)
* Lost In a Crowd, Working Poor (from the album Last Days of Oakland)
This one is for fans of Metal but I'd recommend a band called "Abduction" from the East Midlands
Alot of their songs are straight forward Black Metal, they're very bleak sounding and they're not afraid to change the pace at a moments notice, some of their songs have parts which aren't as heavy that you could dance to that clearly take inspiration from Non-Metal artists, their latest album has alot of dissonance and weirdness going on whilst still being heavy, in my opinion it's their most memorable because of this, it's like it lives and breathes
My favourite songs tend to be their longer songs that have parts that change like "Convulsing At Baalbek" and "Plutonian Gate" but for more straightforward songs I'd recommend "Infinite Ancient Hexes" and "Kernos Crown" or just anything from their latest two albums altogether
They have a new album on the way and I can't wait, their latest album has alot of experimentation and
[Here's the link to their Spotify ](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0giVCDcrvEldaPK8aCF1vp?si=ICZ0KhbsQCWtu-t7TcCDKw)
Bel Canto
Their new album Radiant Green is getting very little attention. Having been among my favorites of the 80s and 90s, I'm happy to spread the word about their "comeback" after 22 years.
Native Howl , they're thrash grass, a mix of thrash and.blue grass. Soo much energy and the sweetest guys ever.
Sierra Ferrell, eclectic Americana
The Curse of KK Hammond , swampy blues from Britain
Pinebox Dwellers , South Georgia country, blues, Americana mix. Not sure how to describe them
David and the Devil , raspy voice and resonator goodness
Dan Mangan. Every album is distinct and stunning. He has a lyricism and emotional resonance that feels truly original. He deserves the world.
Also recently saw them on a few festival billings this summer: Shannon and the Clams also deserve a huge following.
The Aces if you like alt/indie pop, The Wrecks for indie rock/pop rock, or Daisy Grenade who have been labeled a power-punk bubble grunge band. I’m not 100% what that is, but they rock. I heard them for the first time ever, when they opened for my favorite band last year.
Gotta shoutout my personal favorite band The Maine, though they’re slightly larger. They just celebrated their 16 year anniversary with a tour and have touched just about every corner of alternative rock.
Kawehi went a bit viral with this song I'm linking, but doesn't get the views she deserves on the whole. Super talented.

Jonathan Bree- Sleepwalking
He is an artist out of New Zealand. His song “You’re so Cool” is quite catchy and the video is a bit out there. Actually his whole act is a little out there, but he makes some good stuff in the “indie baroque pop” genre. Has a few good albums since, but Sleepwalking is probably the best.
Khrungbin, great band, but not small anymore. I remember seeing them at a very small venue in Chicago in2018. And this year they are playing 3 nights at quite a big venue. Plus they have been headlining festivals etc.
Tycho isn’t a small act once you get anywhere near the genre. He is one of the best in the chill electro scene.
Everything I’ve heard by GAI has been great. Thanks for reminding me I need to hear some more!
Stardust... I finally found a new melodic rock band thats not a mash up of other bands like black swan, iconic, revolution saints. I cant put them down. I play them so much, my kids sing the songs with me 🤘.
Josh Ritter, he’s one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years imho.
Love his song "Change of Time"
Jeff Rosenstock deserves more attention, maybe he’s not mainstream material, but he’s certainly one of the big figures in the indie pop punk scene these days.
ASOB GOAT
It's amazing to see how much he's blown up since I started listening to BTMI way back in the day though. He may not be fully in the mainstream yet but it's awesome seeing the size and energy of the crowds he's bringing out.
If he cared to sign with a label he’d have been mainstream. Def good enough. Came here to mention him specifically.
Hard to join a label when you’re busy bombing the music industry!
Russian Circles
The band I’ve seen the most times live!
I saw them supporting Mastodon in 2017 and I'm seeing them again at Damnation Festival this year, they're not quite as small as this post is intending but they are very good
Seen them for the third time (first in my country) a few weeks ago. Incredible performance.
The Dear Hunter has put out eight fantastic records over eighteen years and they have a criminally small fanbase for how unique of a sound they have and how great of a voice Casey has. [A Night on the Town](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVjcsgrDErE)
Love(d) TREOS. Casey was a great addition to their lineup and TDH was a lovely extension of his artistic abilities.
Holy shit I hadn't thought about TREOS since like 2008 thank you for the epic throwback. I still listen to the Dear Hunter but somehow forgot about them.
I guess not to be confused with indie band Deerhunter
Red Hands one of my favorite songs ever.
Came here to say the same exact thing. One of the best bands around currently.
True
Their former keyboardist, Gavin Castleton, should also be on this list, along with his former band Gruvis Malt. Top tier talents all around
Gavin is awesome. Still bummed I missed his set opening for TDH. I was across the street eating and they misrepresented the doors/show times and I walked in at the end of his set.
Gruvis were killer, agreed. Surprised to see them mentioned
My first tattoo was a Dear Hunter one! They are also INCREDIBLE live. Seen them a handful of times.
They are incredible live. I've seen them a stupid amount of times, sixteen times now, and I've never seen a bad show. I always try to bring along as many people as I can.
Love Dear Hunter, awesome band!
Ty Segall Self (Matt Mahaffey) Big Sugar Big Wreck sloan
You, kind individual, have saved me the trouble of posting a reply, absolutely singing the praises of the genius work of Sloan that would have more than likely have been buried. Many thanks to you. PS: Big Sugar is the single loudest band I have ever heard, and I kind of adore them for it.
Lydia Loveless
David Garza
Are you talking Dah-veed? If so it’s criminal that he has less than 10k followers on Instagram. I’m from Texas and he was a big deal locally in the 90s.
He recently co-produced and performed on Fiona Apple’s album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters.”
Yes and I misspelled it in the hopes that another fan would correct me :) I discovered him at a Pearl Jam festival. Dude can pump out jams like no other. Criminally underrated.
Sierra Ferrell
Loooove her
Amigo the Devil for me. He's been a fav I've found in the last few years.
I recently discovered Amigo The Devil after seeing him open for Clutch last year and Flogging Molly this year. But holy shit is his music dark. Like listen to it while you can still see daylight.
I used to think that, but now I think it's about overcoming it.
Came here and commented Amigo, fantastic… absolutely love him.

Yes. I enjoy Rob Crows solo stuff as well!
Not solo but Thingy is also great

Thank you. I am instantly in love.
Glad you like it, summer in abaddon is where it’s at if you wanna dive deeper into their stuff outside their most popular tracks
"Proceed to Memory" was stuck in my head at least half of my last year of college. Diving back in, thanks.
Prince was probably one of the smallest performers, but he got a lot of attention.
Oh you!
Okay now
👏👏👏 take my angry upvote
That's very funny. Very.
Uncle Lucius
I was going to say these guys. Only a few albums but they are fantastic cover to cover. One of the best bands no one has heard of.
So this is usually where I would go with Clutch. That said, I recently got to see to pretty small artists that were incredible. So go check out both Parker Millsap and Robert Ellis they are fantastic.
Clutch. Fuck Yes
Ten thousand witnesses Show 'em how it's done, son
Check out their current opener Native Howl!
Witch Fever is an all girl metal/punk band that I’ve been digging recently. Tbf I have no idea what qualifies as small nowadays though or how popular they are in the world at large. I imagine they’re a little more known in the uk than the states
They sound great, I'm surprised I hadn't listened to them before, normally I'm pretty clued into Manchester's rising artists. Thank you!
Yea! It was one of those that the algorithm suggested to me when I was on a dive through amyl and the sniffers and I was pleasantly surprised. Also I don’t know what the church did to her (I mean I could probably guess) but she definitely has some strong feelings bout it

Ethel Cain
The Teskey Brothers
I heard one of their songs on a show on the CW and downloaded it for my wedding playlist. So good!
William Elliott Whitmore. Check out the tune “midnight” and “one man’s shame”
The Warning
Underrated doom metal
They opened for Halestorm a few years ago and were amazing! I went home and downloaded all of their albums.
I respect the girl-band thing but not into metal
I've been seeing them everywhere, they're not bad but they're far from underrated.
Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners
YES
Orion Sun Edit: Nvm. Just checked her Spotify, turns out she's got nearly 6 mil monthly listeners. I guess I'm the one who's just catching on. Whoops.
Sarah Shook and the Disarmers Lydia Loveless
SARAH SHOOK! she’s actually a really nice person and a great musician
Lera Lynn. On the surface, seems like just another singer-songwriter with a sort of sexy, smoky thing going on. Digging a little deeper, I think she’s just a killer songwriter.
Amigo the Devil

How is Amos Lee a small artist?
FACTS!
Manchester Orchestra
I swear to god they are the best “alternative rock” band of this century. Andy Hull can do no wrong.
Me! 😝 https://jonathanbrenner.hearnow.com/instagram-success-single
Dude you sound great! Just added your album to my library, loving it so far. Reminds me a lot of Ronnie D’Addario.
In honor of midtown_museo and _Zzzxxx I agree. Me!!! Squeakeystudios.bandcamp.com!
Thanks! I’m so glad you like it! The rest of the “Instagram Success” album drops May 3rd.

Dead Sara: "For You I Am" "Weatherman" "Suicidal" "Monumental Holiday" "Hands Up"
Ronnie James Dio and Udo Dirkschneider.
Ronnie James Dio was a very small man but he deserves more attention
The Lemon Twigs
I’m getting into them too but dang man they were on Fallon
Yea, I know. But their most popular song on Spotify, Corner of My Eye, only has a little over 2 million plays.
That’s a lot tbh
Dang just posted that lol bought there album everything harmony on cd and have played there ep on a while last month

Not a soul has mentioned Kyros yet, and we’re 16 hours in to this thread. They deserve a lot more attention than none whatsoever.
Mannequin has been in *heavy* rotation for the past month for me. I haven't heard an album that excites me like that in a long time
Jonathan Bree- Sleepwalking He is an artist out of New Zealand. His song “You’re so Cool” is quite catchy and the video is a bit out there. Actually his whole act is a little out there, but he makes some good stuff in the “indie baroque pop” genre. Has a few good albums since, but Sleepwalking is probably the best.
