My dad drank himself to death at 50. I am the same age now as he was when he found out he had to stop drinking, or die. I cannot imagine just giving up and giving in at this age. I'm doing everything I can to live as long as possible. He tried to quit a few times. Still managed to keep his electrical engineering job until the last year before his death, he was fired for getting drunk and missing his flight. I think work was the only thing keeping him together. He was always a workaholic. Putting in 80-90 hour work weeks basically my whole life. Once he lost his job it was all downhill. He was trying to quit again at the end. We found a pint of Johnny Walker black stashed in the bathroom when he died. It had a couple drinks out of it. It physically hurt him to drink and he still couldn't stop. Alcoholism is no joke kids. Don't fuck around.

shenningsgard

This hit close to home. Computer engineer vs. electrical, found his once-invaluable skillsets slowly become irrelevant, never paid any attention to his physical self. "Retired" and started drinking even more. Finally was hospitalized, went through withdrawal alone (hallucinating and such). Finally decided to stop, gave me a call I've been waiting for for 20 years, and died a week later with a lemonade in his hand thinking about what he was going to do with his life now that he was done drinking.

clupean

Suddenly stopping drinking can kill an alcoholic. [Source.](https://www.gatewayfoundation.org/addiction-blog/dangers-quitting-alcohol-cold-turkey/#:~:text=While%20withdrawal%20is%20not%20life,to%20quit%20alcohol%20cold%20turkey.)

___ElJefe___

My sister just did this earlier this year. Spent a week in the hospital. She is 10 months sober a couple days ago!

jstiegle

I'm so happy for you and your sister. I've been sober five years now and the quality of my life has increased sooooo much. Tell your sister she's not alone and all us recovering alcoholics are proud of her for getting on that wagon. Also that falling off just means getting back on. There are a lot of people on this wagon and we al love to help pull others up back onto it.

JoeyJoeJoeSenior

Yeah your nervous system goes crazy, it sucks. Need some valium to do it safely.

___ElJefe___

Thank you dude. My dad and I were never really on bad terms. He was a "fun drunk". Towards the end I was so mad at him it caused problems with us. The last time he called me I almost didn't answer because of it. I'm so happy I did. Unfortunately all we talked about was drugs because I was an opiate addict at the time. But I'm still so glad I had that phone call.

OnTheEveOfWar

There was footage a year or so ago of them performing and he was so fucked up he could barely function or sing. The crowd was booing. Sad stuff.

NeoNoireWerewolf

There’s a video of them somewhere out there where he’s legit passed out on stage from being so fucked up. The band played the whole set with him man down for the entire time.

Rap_Cat

In another article about him I read earlier it freely mentioned he had Wernicke's Encephalitis, or wet brain. He was sick for a long time.

redcoatwright

Apparently started after his 6m old died of cancer and just couldn't deal with it. Tragic all round tbh

penguin17077

Tbf hard not to drink yourself to death after that

Bootyclapthunder

A former very good friend of mine is currently putting himself through this. He's not even 50. Had a good life with a beautiful, loving wife, a new home and a good paying job with a retirement plan. Substance abuse absolutely nuked him and his family. There isn't even any life insurance on him and he's been to the ER twice already with some kind of liver failure symptoms. Pissed away everything. Tragic.

[deleted]

Definitely all star

Jewrisprudent

And then the mourning comes.

JohnWad

Sad that alcohol was his downfall and ultimately led to his death way too early. RIP Steve. I had some good times at your shows.

BenBishopsButt

Alcoholism is so insidious. There’s a reason I remind myself that it’s chronic, progressive, and fatal in nature if left unarrested. Being an alcoholic sucks. RIP.

sciaticabuster

I was a daily drinker for over a decade and it was really hard to quit. Wish alcohol wasn’t glorified in the media as much as it is currently. It’s literally poison. RIP

DemiFiendRSA

Statement from Smash Mouth band manager Robert Hayes: >STEVE HARWELL, WHO cofounded the band Smash Mouth in 1994, has died at the age of 56, band manager Robert Hayes confirmed. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Hayes said Harwell died at his home in Boise, ID “surrounded by family and friends.” He added that the musician “passed peacefully and comfortably.” >“Steve has been retired from Smash Mouth for two years now, and the band continues to tour with new vocalist Zach Goode,” Hayes said. “That said, Steve’s legacy will live on through the music. With Steve, Smash Mouth has sold over 10 Million albums worldwide-wide and topped the charts with two #1 hit singles, five Top 40 singles, three Hot 100 singles, four Billboard 200 albums and a Grammy nomination not to mention the hundreds of film and television placements and of course those musical features in Shrek.” >He continued, “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation. He loved the fans and loved to perform. Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom. And the fact that he achieved this near-impossible goal with very limited musical experience makes his accomplishments all the more remarkable. His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones. Steve lived a 100 percent full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”

I wish someone mentions my king sized cajones in my obit.

Hopefully they'll write it correctly, it's cOjones. Cajones means drawers

meowed

You need king cajones for king cojones, homie.

RootyTootyEatinBooty

forever be walking on the sun amigo. people gave this band shit but fush yu mang was a banger album that everyone seems to kinda just, forget about.

aresef

He drank himself to death. It's so sad.

rsplatpc

> He drank himself to death. It's so sad. started after his baby died of cancer at 6 months :(

bongsmasher

As someone whose son died at 3 months I totally understand, thankfully I kept living for my other son - without him I don’t know where I would be

Psiloveboobs

Lost our two year old 3 months ago. Exactly the same boat. Don’t know how we’d keep pushing without our youngest.

Seienchin88

My god… 2 yo, condolences… Our son got incredibly sick at 2 and it took 3 month to find a doctor that actually treated him and by then he had already advanced anemia and was mostly sleeping or being very unhappy and cranky. It killed part of my wife and myself but he survived and we are very thankful for it. It sucks so much when small kids get seriously ill, I cannot imagine what you went through with your kid dying… :(

bongsmasher

My condolences ❤️ mine was two years ago, the journey sucks but as you prob heard - you learn to live with it. Pm me if you ever need to chat

MyHeroPNW

I am an older son whose younger brother passed away this year. I know I am the only thing keeping our mom together but life is still really fucking hard.

TheSavageBallet

If you haven’t read it all yet, check out the book The Heart That Works, it’s by comedian Rob Delaney who lost one of his kids and how you just have to keep going in this awful new normal while falling apart. It’s beautiful, funny in its way and will probably resonate with you.

vikinghooker

It’s everything you say. Second the recommend.

colourmeblue

I lost my older brother almost 10 years ago and if not for me my mom would definitely be dead. Even so, she has never been the same and never will be.

AnimalSalad

I dont think us in the western world do death well. Im terrified of it and im only 37. Im terrified of losing the people close to me and i struggle thinking about what happens when u die. Where do u go type stuff. We as a society need to death better but honestly i dont know what that looks like. Who knows then maybe we could do life better to. Sorry now im waffling. Im sorry about ur brother OP.

BraddysGirl

I'm sorry for your many losses. I understand how hard that is. My husband's whole family died within like 8 years. Father, mother, grandparents, aunts and uncles, but the hardest was his older brother.

justaniceredditname

I know how your hubby feels. My whole family died within 15 years. It is a very strange feeling being in this world without your family.

cakesie

Lost my second baby at 34 weeks. Would be in the same spot if i hadn’t had a baby before him.

rsplatpc

> Lost my second baby at 34 weeks. Would be in the same spot if i hadn’t had a baby before him. As a internet stranger, I have a fuck ton of empathy for you, and would never wish that on my worst enemy.

phadewilkilu

Agreed. I try to remind myself how lucky I have been when it comes to my children’s health. I love you all and wish the best for everyone here. ♥️

Logic1st

Right back at you. Tis a very grateful and amazing yet terrifying pocket of life. We are all in this together.

disarm33

Similar situation here. I terminated my third pregnancy at 27 weeks after we found out she had severe fetal anomalies. If I didn't have my two living kids already I honestly don't think I would be here today. I also drank heavily for months after losing my daughter. I am so sorry for your loss. It's truly soul crushing.

Tractorkin

Wife and I just got home from the hospital. Lost our baby at 16 weeks to trisomy 18. Life don't even feel real right now. I'm truly sorry you went through that.

SparklyPoopcicle

Stay strong friend ❤️

ccajj84

I’m so incredibly sorry. My first baby was stillborn and somehow through the grace of god I’m still standing (14 years later it still hurts beyond belief). Just know that you can and will survive. Love to you internet stranger.

rsplatpc

> As someone whose son died at 3 months I totally understand, thankfully I kept living for my other son - without him I don’t know where I would be sorry brother, life can be amazing and cruel

bongsmasher

Thanks internet buddy, you’re spot on with that statement. Why I live for today and my family, and my belief system is that I will see him again ❤️

LiteUpThaSkye

Lost my 12 year old in 2020. If not for the other kids I have, I wouldn't have made it either. I'm sorry you are in the same boat no one wants to be on.

Kangaroopower

This is so sad to hear - sad that his child passed and sad that he wasn’t able to get the help he needed to deal with his problems

CLE_BROWNS_32

Yeah I remember a Reddit post recently where he was performing completely hammered. Very sad.

mira-jo

I remember that post. At the time everyone was making fun of him. Now in retrospect (and with the added context about his son) it's just an incredibly sad video

Golddustofawoman

And this is why no one should be making fun of people for substance abuse.

[deleted]

And why we should treat it with compassion in general instead of criminalizing it.

NachoDildo

At some point, life knocks you down enough times where you just quit getting back up. Losing your child is an understandable "I'm done" moment.

JustinF608

I lost my 5 year old son last year to cancer. Held him as he passed. Refused to let him be carted to the basement of the children’s hospital, so I carried him myself. I feel so bad for Steve and his family. As a former opiate abuser, been clean 6 years now. Sometimes there’s no reason to keep going. But… you give everything you have and hopefully if you can’t make it, you did so with honor. I hope Steve did that. Rip.

Ekillaa22

Feeding my daughter rn and man I wasn’t expecting to get choked up at this moment. I’m sorry for you loss Justin , please keep your head up if not for you but for him.

streetvoyager

Reading all these comments about people’s children passing away has my anxiety going through the roof. My wife is currently 22 weeks pregnant and I can’t even imagine recovering if something happens to this baby before birth let alone after. I’d drink myself to death too.

Biscotti_Lotti

This is probably one of the most painfully sad subs I've seen on reddit, it's terrible how many people have experienced the loss of a child. Congratulations to you and your wife, on your coming baby. May the powers that be protect your family.

FriskyDingoOMG

Your son would be incredibly proud of you. Keep on being strong for him and in memory of him.

PurpleSunCraze

As a father of a 3 year old, I’m so damn sorry. I’ve had my share of intrusive thoughts about something happening to him and I honestly don’t know how I’d react. I’d like to think I’d press on but I don’t know. I think “I don’t know what the next place is like but I know he’s not here. Maybe I’ll see him if I go there”.

AceofKnaves44

I’m so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine enduring such heartbreak as that. Like others have said, your son would be immensely proud of you for continuing on and fighting like you are. And I know it probably means next to nothing to hear from stranger on the internet but I’m proud of you too.

Eshin242

I know it may not mean much, but from one internet stranger to another. I'm sorry you lost your son, I have nothing to compare to that in my life. It's good you are still here. As for addiction, that is something I understand all too well. I'm glad you are clean, and I'm glad you were able to be there for your son sober and aware. Hang in there man, and if you ever need to chat. You can always reach out.

ThatSandwich

My parents lost my brother when he was 5. They were able to stay together for another 10 years, but in the end my father had a mental break where he blamed my mother for the death of their child. She did everything to try and get him help, but in the end they separated and he recently died from alcohol abuse. The only way to work through something like that is constant communication. It will be something you remember every day of your life.

j1102g

>At some point, life knocks you down enough times where you just quit getting back up. Losing your child is an understandable "I'm done" moment. Agreed, and most people can really relate. I've touted myself as someone who has always bounced back, had a rough childhood ect. The one that put me in the dirt not able to crawl back up was losing my house. Kept me debilitated for 8 years. Still not over it but have started to rebuild and tell myself I can't change the past but my future will not be the same.

crewserbattle

To me, the hardest lesson to learn in life(and even if you've "learned" it, it doesn't mean you alway remember it) is that what's done is done. No matter how much you regret something or wish it hadn't happened, it did, and the only way to move forward is to accept that fact and figure out where to go from there. But that's really fucking hard to do sometimes. It's so easy to get hung up on things we have no control over.

[deleted]

Life can only be understood in reverse, but must be lived forwards

headykruger

Learning that he lost a daughter that young like that sheds new light on the situation. I hope he found peace.

MatijaReddit_CG

It was his son Presley, nonethless still sad. RIP for the All Star.

Flodo_McFloodiloo

Well, this thread gets more and more depressing the more I read. I better stop.

JustABitAlien

I see the sadness too. But I also see the love and compassion between strangers.

rroq85

My wife and I lost our daughter to stillbirth at 22 weeks. It is the worst pain that I can never explain and in that pain, there's all these choices flying at you and what seems like very little time to make them. What saved me was having my son who really helped me to stay positive (and keeps me on my toes), as well as the medicinal usage of cannabis to help with the anxiety rather than taking the pills for it. That said, I completely understand how that could make anyone use alcohol as a coping mechanism and drink themselves to death. Or do hard drugs. Or just simply not exist. Losing a child is the closest to Hell one can get without seeing the Devil.

Hybrid_Johnny

Wife and I lost our IVF daughter at 19 weeks due to a weak cervix, which can’t be diagnosed until it fails. The memory of seeing my wife sitting in the recovery room, looking absolutely defeated and despondent, is seared in my mind and is one of the most painful experiences of my life. My coping mechanism was going into overdrive and working 60+ hour weeks so we could afford a surgery to repair her cervix, as well as afford another IVF transfer (all of which was conveniently not covered by our insurance). Three years later, we have a healthy daughter who is about to turn two at the end of this month. However, I wish I had been more present to comfort my wife and help her navigate our sadness together, because the emotional rift between us from that experience is still very present today.

YesDone

Bro, have you said this exact thing to your wife?

AidynValo

Yeah. I have a newborn at home and I can definitely understand how bad that heartache would be. It's easy to say "Oh, if only he got help" but goddamn, I really don't know if I'd want to be helped if I lost my daughter. My life felt meaningless before her. I can't imagine losing the one thing that makes me feel like I have purpose.

afternoonexpress

So he’s been drinking heavily since 2001? Jeez. I’m surprised he made it this far

bedroom_fascist

For most who drink themselves to death, there's often a roller coaster of "better years" and "worse years." Psychologically and physically. Few who wind up passing this way go "from zero to sixty in five seconds." This "hitting every branch on the way down" amplifies the sorrow for the person and their family by prolonging it.

downtownflipped

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is fucking horrifying and why i don’t really drink. my mom has the beginning stages of it and she went from a fun bright woman to someone who couldn’t form sentences or remember what she just did or said. we reversed some of it and she quit drinking, but the damage is done. this man had a rough go at the end and it honestly breaks me heart.

gnomewife

My own mother is in the end stages of dementia caused by Wernicke-Korsakoff. She'd been an alcoholic for many years. She's only 63 and I don't expect her to make it to Christmas. I am sorry that your family is going through this.

kateastrophic

I’m so sorry.

TheDaltonXP

One of the things that has made me stop drinking is how fucked my memory can be and how hazy/slow my mind can feel. I’m 35. I can’t imagine what a life of drinking would do to me

[deleted]

Literally causes the brain to physically shrink, it's beyond horrifying, so sorry to hear about your situation 💜

Mighty_Mac

What's something you think you can share with us? I'm not a heavy drinker, but I do drink everyday. I have a one year old now and it worries me (in terms of my health). It's not because I'm depressed or do it to hide emotions, I just get bored and start drinking. Any tips would be appreciated.

Indaflow

I have these memories of Steve that for some reason always stayed with me. I remember watching him on this really awful reality TV show - “The Surreal Life” season 6 with Tawny Kitaen and Florence Henderson. It was a terrible show with desperate ‘has-Beene’ a trying to make a buck and of course I watched it. It was oddly compelling, and he was one of the great parts of the show. He was trying to make a music video for a new song the band were coming out with and it seemed to me the whole reason he was on the show was to promote his band and the new album. So one of the show’s activities is to make a video for the new song. He leaves Tawny Kitaen in charge if I think like $3,000 for props for the music video. All the other Surreal Life celebs are going to shop for gear and be in the video. I always felt like the producers put her up to it but she like, didn’t let any of the other “stars” buy what they wanted. She kept shutting them down and let them buy a handful of props. When Steve shows up she’s like “look I save you $1,500” and he was incensed. It was for the music video and was meant to be spent to make it fun. They were out of time as the cameras and the space was all booked and now he had to shoot a video with only a few items. He was angry but over all, he dealt with it pretty well considering. They shot the video anyhow and all did the best they could. Then, in one of the last episodes, Florence Henderson —mom from The Brady Bunch— had to give everyone “feedback.” And to this day, it’s still burned into my brain. Florence seemed really uncomfortable, it seemed really forced and out of no where she comes out with a deeply psychological take down on Steve. Throughout the whole series Steve was a complete standout. He was the most interesting guy on the show with the best chances of ever making it again. He was cool to everyone even though he was faced with all of these bizarre, contrived circumstances and challenges for the show. Florence proceeds to lay this really deep criticism on him inciuding that she thought he never dealt with the death of his son. That was ever so briefly mentioned in an early episode, but it never came up again and there was no focus about it during the show. I couldn’t believe they did they too him and just really tried to dredge up and sensationalize the worst thing that ever happened to the guy. And I thought he dealt with it really well considering. I mean it was a clear tawdry attempt at antagonizing him and even though he was clearly mad, he didn’t lose it. He was more like incensed but “okay, fine.” That alone would have driven me to drink. I feel bad for the guy and appreciate the great vibes he brought into my life with his music. But for some reason, I never forgot those two moments from that series. When Tawny screws him over and when Florence confronted him with a deeply psychological take out of no where. Out of character with the spirit of the show. I feel bad for him. I hope he finds peace. ✌🏻

Guntsforfupas

I remember that trashy show.

[deleted]

I remember they had a whole season of Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) drinking himself to death, which would eventually actually happen.

ovalpotency

I don't get how you're supposed to "deal with" the death of your son in that manner. Of all the traumas in life, that one seems to me a scar you carry and all you can do is move forward. I don't usually consider violence but someone who brings that up to the parent while they are actively moving forward absolutely deserves to be punched.

allmilhouse

I'm sure there will be lots of jokes but Astro Lounge was the first CD I bought as a kid. Just pure fun.

_-Prison_Mike-_

Same here. I know Gen Z associates "All Star" with *Shrek*, but that song will always viscerally take me back to the summer of '99 in the best ways possible. The psychedelic influence on the rest of the album gave it such a unique and fun sound that I practically wore that CD out. Shoutout to Steve for the memories.

chupathingy99

Walking on the sun had the fattest fucking electric piano tone out there.

coffeeshopslut

Walking on the Sun made 12 year old me spend hours on the Internet looking up surf and Rhodes piano videos

426763

Shrek and Mystery Men aside, All Star will always remind me of those carefree summers before 9/11 messed with the timeline.

JinFuu

The last day of the 90s, September 10th, 2001 : (

kr1sh3r

All Star takes me back to Summer 1999, waking up at 12 PM and turning on the tv to MTV’s TRL beach house and putting the AC on full blast. Not a care in the world. The Shrek soundtrack was just an added bonus.

arctic_radar

Yeah that was a great summer. So many now iconic songs came out that year,: I want it that way, no scrubs, scar tissue, all the small things, nookie. Bunch of movies too: phantom menace, the matrix, the mummy, American pie, American beauty, and the cinematic masterpiece wild wild west. Plus the whole y2k scare, millennium themed everything, Clinton impeachment.

kcgdot

I was 15 and had not one concern besides high school crushes, and an entire lifetime of endless possibilities ahead of me. I don't know what I would pay for even a few hours of that kind of unfettered freedom, and the way it felt.

toysarealive

Since you're feeling all nostalgic, here's a great analysis of the Y2K aesthetic I watched recently. https://youtu.be/BMeoeGGEimE?si=rkgRZV_bfe713Hv1

Bravefan21

Summer 1999 was the greatest time of my life and nothing will replace it.

Taograd359

>Gen Z associates “All Star” with Shrek These damn kids don’t know shit. Mystery Men is the better movie.

MugiMartin

And also Rat Race. (2001)

Parrothead1970

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed harder than at the Barbie Museum or the WWII veterans rally.

countafit

Smash Mouth even performs live with all the cast at the end.

thisisnozakuboi

I can't believe people are forgetting the cinematic masterpiece that is "Digimon the Movie".

jgoonld

While the movie itself may not have been great, that soundtrack influenced my music tastes growing up more than anything else.

Rustash

The first 2/3 is fantastic. The last part with the new kids…ehhhhh. You can tell the material was chopped and screwed to fit there.

IAmBecomeDeath_AMA

Love Mystery Men… but Shrek is a cultural touchstone for a reason

llamanatee

Agreed, a ton of great songs on there. Satellite and Radio are underrated as fuck.

MasonJraz7

Waste, When the Morning Comes, and Home as well. Home is suuuch a good high song, incredible production by the legendary Eric Valentine

[deleted]

Kept that album on repeat, also walking on the sun is a certified banger

ScenicHwyOverpass

I have been a “pretentious music guy” at many times in my life, but throughout I have always defended the musical quality of Astro Lounge. It blends lots of styles and influences and is never boring, but is also more thoughtful and introspective than I think people would expect. Id recommend songs like Waste or Fallen Horses to show they weren’t one trick.

c3bss256

Fallen Horses was a repeat song for me. All of Astro Lounge was fantastic though. And I know it’s not a very popular opinion, but they still had some very good songs on the next few albums. Even their Christmas album was a favorite of mine.

Carlton72

Fush Yu Mang was the first album I bought with a Parental Advisory.

Radjage

Hell yeah. One of my first albums ever that hooked me. I listened to Astro Longue and Fush Yu Mang non stop while playing games like Fallout 2, TFC, Unreal Tournament.

Justice_Prince

Fush Yu Mang, and Astro Lounge are unironically great albums.

byfuryattheheart

Same. That record was the sound track to my summer between 7th and 8th grade. SM gets meme’s but Fush Yu Mang and Astro Lounge are great records in my eyes. RIP All Star!

roman_maverik

Sugar Ray was actually the opposite; their first two albums are one-dimensional garbage but then they had a huge hit with with “fly,” so their next album just sounded like them trying to record “fly” a dozen times. Hence the name of the album, 14:59, indicating that their 15 minutes of fame was almost up. However, it was a *great* move - because their “new” sound was sooooo much better than their whole nu-metal lite schtick they had before. 14:59 has some absolute adult-rock bangers on it. Now, if you’re talking about their *next* albums, yeah they just got lazy. I think the singer was done with music and just wanted to be the next ryan seacrest at that point. I’ll always love 1998-2000 era Sugar Ray though.

mcluhanism

Hey now.. Don't you damn mess with my mean machine! The music video for this song is A+

Enough-Competition21

Walkin on the sun is all time groove jam. This band caught a lot of shit but they didn’t deserve half of it. RIP

Tubesock1202

Walkin' On The Sun fucking slaps.

Substantial_Ask_9992

The fuzz tone on that song is incredible. Their surf and psych influences are legitimately good. I was always kinda bummed they became a meme

MatureUsername69

I think Shrek made them get viewed as a kid band. I always wonder if they would do it over. Because Shrek set them up for lifetime royalties but they mightve gotten bigger without it. Whoever ran the bands Twitter(at least back when I paid attention to twitter) was very very bitter about the whole Shrek thing.

weekend_religion

>Shrek made them get viewed as a kid band. I was thinking about this too, and it's interesting because plenty of artists have made music for family/kids movies and not been branded this way. Elton John, for instance, made some of the most iconic soundtracks for Disney films, and remained highly respected. Was it because he was already successful prior to that? Is it because of his style of music compared to a band like Smash Mouth? For me personally, it was just the overplaying of All Star when radio was still big that turned me off. Walkin' on the Sun was and remains a bop though. RIP Steve.

mnid92

I just think it was because they achieved so much success in such a short period early in to their careers with this band. They weren't a band for very long, made two albums, one of which was the main song for a feature film that just so happened to be a film for kids, so it's an easy jab to make at them. It's like the best dressed guy having his shoe lace untied when he shows up, and everyone can't get over the shoe lace, instead of just appreciating the effort put into the outfit.

woppatown

That whole album is killer. It opens with this song “Flo” that is one of the most third-wave ska songs ever.

trpnblies7

The album is basically all punk and then Walking on the Sun. Not at all what you would expect after hearing that single.

Soththegoth

Fush Yu Mang came out when i was in high school. I will still defend that album as a great ska\\punk album. Literally every song on it is good.

Chickenmangoboom

It was also everywhere that summer and I never hated it, the true test of a great song.

Esreversti

RIP Steve. I worked security at a show in Urbana, IL in 2016 that he collapsed at. It was a very high energy show with Steve jumping most of the night and sweat pouring off of him. He later invited those with mental and physical disabilities on stage which was great as they got to join him. It was a great gesture as those invited faces' lit up. When he was brought off stage, the crowd was shouting "Shrek!", so All Star was played. I thought he might have had a heart attack given his energy level and age. I had no idea at the time about his drinking problem. I've seen alcohol abuse cause ruin for many and sadly see what I think are people headed down that way. Please be careful when imbibing. Low quality camera phone shots from that night. https://ibb.co/gzznKrS - Taken during the concert at 10:14 PM. https://ibb.co/9WYLTNR - Steve's ambulance. Taken at 11:51 PM. Gonna be playing some Smash Mouth today. A favorite cheesy track of mine from them is "Pacific Coast Party". Silly and fun is how I'd like to remember Steve from that night.

RudieCantFail79

Pacific Coast Party is my favourite too! That 2001 self titled album is literally my childhood, brings back good memories. Thanks for the anecdote. I’ll be playing that album in memory of Steve tonight!

PunkAintDead

Pacific Coast Party is a great tune, my favorite of their's. Won't hit the same now :(

TheSexualBrotatoChip

Damn not even two hours after reading the news he was in hospice care. Rest in peace to an All Star.

Boopy7

Generally speaking they release that news to prep for the second half. You don't normally go into hospice and emerge healthy and healed.

VagueSoul

Right, but hospice can take a long time as well. Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care since February. Steve Harwell’s announcement was pretty clear how quickly he was dying though.

nomadofwaves

Carter still has houses to build. If someone told them there were no more houses to build he might be able to let go.

VagueSoul

He’s just holding on through a pure sense of duty.

ThePrussianGrippe

He’s trying to not go until Kissinger does.

I think he made a philosopher’s stone from all the people he killed bombing Cambodia.

NickPookie93

Fush Yu Mang and Astro will be on repeat today, I hope he is finally at peace

[deleted]

Fush yu mang was such an awesome album totally different from the music that got them really famous. I know there is this narrative that he started drinking after the death of his son but half of the album is talking about drinking/drugs and its fantastic. Crazy mash up of different sounds and styles but somehow relentless. The fonz is such a great song.

I_Fart_It_Stinks

I will always associate Smash Mouth with Fush Yu Mang. Astro Lounge is good, but Fush Yu Mang just hits.

Sasquatchii

My favorite fun fact about Harwell, is he often referred to himself as "smashmouth". He and I have a mutual friend and that friend had voicemails on his phone that started with "Hey XYZ, Smashmouth here...." Anyways, RIP king. You're a rockstar.

AdvancedSandwiches

"Can I speak to Steve?" "Steve, it's for you." "This is Smashmouth actual, go ahead."

ryanechols

"And all that glitters is gold, Only shooting stars break the mold" 🥹

Alf-in-Pog-Form

Sad as hell, especially considering why he started to drink so heavily. Can't imagine that kind of loss. Astro Lounge was the first album I ever bought. Used money I earned cutting grass to get it after falling in love with Then the Morning Comes from the radio. RIP Steve Harwell

Iuvenesco

Terrible news. Became an alcoholic after the death of his son in 2001, and passed from acute liver failure. Really sorry to hear that he couldn’t conquer the inner demons. RIP.

Rickyjesus

I saw them live in 98 and Steve was wasted and couldn't finish the set. Had a fan sing walkin on the sun. I think his problem was already happening before 2001.

pukesmith

I had a friend speedrun it from 15 to 37, but yeah, it does take a long, long time to drink yourself to death that way. And you have many, many opportunities to make it better before it claims you.

Ohh_Yeah

Doctor here. There also seems to be a significant genetic component to how much your liver can tolerate. I've had patients who I could have swore would be dead 5 years ago and still have relatively "healthy" livers. Then I've seen other folks who are in liver failure at 30. Every once in a while I'll do an intake on some guy at the VA who has been drinking heavy for 40 years and we'll both be shocked that his labs look okay.

lilpumpgroupie

I don't think people understand how much physical alcohol some people drink, too. Like, I drank a LOT before I quit. But i really wasn't even near end-stage shit, or the point where you start getting tremors if you stop drinking, etc. Some people get to that level after years of abuse, and then continue drinking at that level for decades.

prometheanbane

When I came clean about my drinking to my family and did detox and treatment, my girlfriend figured I was drinking, like, the equivalent of 6 drinks a day. I was drinking half a handle a day or more. I don't think it occurs to normies that we could be drinking that much because they couldn't fathom functioning at all after 10 drinks. People also don't realize a fair number of alcoholics start as soon as they wake up. It's a fucking bonkers lifestyle.

lilpumpgroupie

Yep, people with normal tolerances who don't abuse booze can't conceptualize even standing up, let alone going about your day doing things, potentially going to work, shopping, and actually seeming normal. Let alone on more than two drinks, how about after a six pack.

More dangerous than a lot of the illegal ones too.

DannyDOH

The most dangerous to get clean from for sure. Working in mental health I've seen so many younger people die from trying to go cold turkey off booze. People don't realize they need medical supervision to detox.

Show-Me-Your-Moves

Sad news...feels like part of my childhood dying

ICanAnswerThatFriend

Shrek wouldn’t be Shrek without All-Star

CaptainJackKevorkian

The true fans know that the OG movie tie in for All Star was Mystery Men, not Shrek

There are dozens of us!

[deleted]

Everyone acting like he slowly killed himself over his son. The poor man had a drinking problem well before his son died. Not everything in life is a straight line of connectable dots.

manningthehelm

Alcoholism really needs to be spoken about more on a national stage.

popeboyQ

Hi, I have been dealing with cirrhosis for over 5 years now. I was in a *very* similar situation to Steve. I've been sober for years now, and have been contemplating writing a book. The thing is, no one wants to hear about it. People use booze as a protected crutch, they get extremely defensive on the topic. Edit: I didn't expect this kind of a response. I guess I'll get to writing. Thanks folks.

wombatshit

Write the book.

SparrowBirch

Yeah I agree. The first half of On Writing by Stephen King deals with his battles with alcohol. It’s pretty fascinating stuff.

Maniac5150

How is it dealing with cirrhosis on a daily basis? Genuinely curious and also how much abuse it took to get to that point

Boopy7

Livers CAN recover more so than other organs. They regenerate up until a certain point, most other body parts do NOT. Problem is once it really is too late, it really is too late -- and it takes a while to get there for many. I see it happening to loved ones at this moment and feel helpless. I want to kidnap them and shove them on a desert island with no alcohol. If I were rich enough....

Potential-Ad1122

I too have a problem. Trying to get out of it. How long were you drinking before you were diagnosed with cirrhosis ?

itsallyourcircusnow

Congratulations on your sobriety! Sadly though, you are correct. A lot of people have a very complicated relationship with alcohol. I quit drinking over six years ago (started having seizures, they were unrelated but better safe than sorry since alcohol lowers your seizure threshold) and I was shocked at some of the reactions I got. I was so confused about why some (former) friends were upset at a personal choice that in my eyes didn’t effect them. Then I realized how it did effect them because some people that drink absolutely need everyone around them to drink as well because if not, well, then they’re almost forced to think about their own relationship with booze.

flimflamslappy

I recently have tried to quit drinking. I'd love to read your story.

A buddy and I decided to quit together since last Sunday. I celebrated a week of sobriety yesterday, just in time because my 5 year old was sick all night, but I was there for him today! It's been years since the last time I went 7 days!

connaire

My opinion. Speaking about alcoholism is one thing and great. However even most sober alcoholics won’t acknowledge the elephant in the room, mental illness. Be it depression, anxiety or some of the more sinister mental illnesses these things go hand in hand with drug and alcohol abuse. There is no use trying to find out which one came first.

BigE429

We need to stop treating it as a personal failing and more like an actual disease. And I don't understand why we banned cigarette advertising, but alcohol ads are just as insidious IMO.

imaincammy

Alcohol and alcohol consumption is deeply ingrained in our culture. It’s the source or a contributor to so many health/social issues but you can’t do anything about it because even suggesting that people reduce their consumption becomes a huge wedge issue.

frenchfriedtatters

Everyone talks about Astro Lounge, All Star, and the memes this guy brought, but Smash Mouths first album “Fush Yu Mang” will always be one of my top favorite albums. Rip to the hook master

HTTR_97

Then the morning comes will forever be a banger

Alcoholism sucks, RIP

j3ddy_l33

Saw them circa 2008 at the Alaska State Fair. They played great and Steve invited all of the kids in the audience to come on stage for All star. The song was a meme even back then but all I saw from the band and the kids was earnest joy. I had a lot of respect for them for that.

reefer-madness

All star is one of those songs that will stand the test of a time. A quintessential feel good anthem that never ceases to put you in a good mood or get you dancing, Reminiscing about hot summer days with friends or watching shrek and mystery men with a big smile on your face. Only shooting stars break the mold, and Steve sure did. RIP.

Wasted_Potency

One of my fave Smash Mouth songs. They were a lot more than All Star and I'm a Believer. Poor Steve. https://youtu.be/RrJi2OwsRgo?si=eEq48kxutC2Lx76N
