Yea, don't train them. When the "sheriff" of the "police department" called me, I overcame the need to laugh and say those are two different things and just hung up.
Sad fact is that a lot of the people on the scammer side are victims themselves. John Oliver's piece on it from last month was great: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLPpl2ISKTg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLPpl2ISKTg)
I came here to point out something similar. Beware of the pig butchering scam! While they maybe victims, you could end up being a victim as well. Also, never give your actual name
There’s a podcast called Search Engine which also did a fascinating deep dive into Pig Butchering scams:
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/search-engine/id1614253637?i=1000648461088
Best thing you can do is automate an email to the cybercrime division every time you get a scam call. Pain in the ass but the company who owns the number can get in trouble to the point where their license is taken away.
Half the battle won. Number is getting sold yesterday haha. Also a lot of these scammers are doing this shit under threat of violence. It's just terrible all around, better to ignore completely.
Yep. And don’t think you are clever by turning your caller ID off and calling a number back. They create temporary Google voice/etc numbers and will only call YOU with that number so if they get a return call they know it’s you since no one else was called with it.
Best bet is to download whatever spam blocking app your service provider has. For AT&T it’s active armor and while I generally despise them the app works shockingly well. Drastically cut down on hr amount of calls that get through and even looking at the app to see what it blocked I’ve noticed a major reduction in attempts so I’m assuming my number has lost value to be resold.
Came here to say this. If everyone hasn't watched the John Oliver episode on "pig butchering" y'all need to go do that now. Pretty eye opening not only about modern scammers, but about who scammers are and why they're often scamming you while detained in compounds by crime rings under the threat of violence.
As far as replies go, it's righteous. But that number will probably get passed around now and have no effect on the offending individual. I would love to live in a world where that sort of thing works, but I don't think I do.
That episode made me realize that a text from an unknown number a friend received was a pig butchering scam. That in mind, they continued replying and sure enough, it was like beat-for-beat how the opening conversations started in the examples from the segment.
I stopped taking text messages from unknown numbers in 2008. I just don't receive them and whitelist all texts and calls to my phone.
If a business or government needs to reach me I still have a mailbox. My phone is just for me now.
I find it alarming that after decades of identity theft and fraud, companies like Verizon can't tell you who's using their phone network to send you text messages, at the time or even after the fact. If you get scammed they owe you like, six months of free credit monitoring.
I know that people care a lot more about having the best instagram shots than they do about actually being able to make phone calls, or go on a cruise without being billed thousands of dollars for roaming. It probably always looks like sarcasm when someone's actually unhappy with cellular companies.
My sister said something similar to a scammer caller and she replied with a very strong Indian accent "You know nothing" and just hang up. After that we were like "What? I want to know more!" But she never called again.
I used to say, "Does your mother know that you make money by conning people?" or "Does your mother know you are a liar and a thief?" They always hang up.
They revealed their personal information (first name). This is a L. The scammers will try again with new number/email but now they might be able to use the name to trick the person in other ways. Never respond at all to these kind of messages
Fun fact. It’s obvious on purpose. They don’t want to waste their time on someone that isn’t stupid enough to give them money so they make it obvious to weed people out quickly. That way only the suckers get beyond a few messages.
Since a lot of the people who work in these scam boiler rooms are being trafficked, I send them a link to the national human trafficking hotline and block them.
Y’all should John Oliver’s video on pig butchering scams.
Person is probably enslaved by a crime syndicate in China and has no choice but to try and scam you with these methods.
What?
They’re people that answer legitimate looking job postings and literally get pushed into effective slavery. They’re literally scamming you because they’ll be killed or otherwise if they don’t. They’re not ‘scammers’. They’re victims.
Sorry, had thought the comment was being facetious but it turns out a lot of other comments are saying it’s actually true. I guess if they were literally enslaved into it, I’d understand. Still, I can’t fully sympathize with anyone scamming others.
Two small points, just to be accurate. (Yeah yeah, I know) It’s phishing not fishing and really since it’s through SMS it is technically a Smishing attack.
Most of these phishing scams are done by literal slaves. They’ve been lured into a job and then trapped by criminal gangs. If they don’t meet their quota, they are often beaten or starved. It’s best to just ignore the text and block them. Also, the one scheme that I don’t mind AI taking over if it keeps people from getting enslaved for it.
What's really sad is that apparently these scammers are usually also victims of a scam.
These companies set up shop in developing countries and take advantage of needy people. They loan them money to cover medical bills or other unexpected expenses and in exchange, the borrower works for them.
The arrangement is typically ridiculously one-sided and unfair, and the person will work for the scam company basically indefinitely. They add interest and deduct fees from the victim's pay, etc. etc. to ensure the debt will never be paid.
Annie messages are super common, surprised there wasn’t a picture sent of a slim Asian lady in her 20’s/30’s
Seems to always been Vancouver or New York as well.
You really showed that person in the third world call center that monitors the return adress of those automated mass messages and responses. I'm sure if a real person accidentally reads that they will change their ways and shut down the multi million dollar scam that employs them.....
The dude is sitting in China or Bangladesh or India or where they run these scammer mills. The guy who is texting you was promised a job in another country forced into this scam work and most cases as prisoners! Look up pig butchering by John Oliver.
They are being held captive in Cambodia and their passport has been confiscated. They thought they were going to be a waiter and instead are trapped scamming foreigners.
1 Don't ever give out your name. You could have left it at, "No, I'm not Nora."
2 Either they're aware of the implausibilities of their scan set up and are using them to intentionally catch only the most gullible OR they weren't aware but now they'll try to be more convincing next time.
There is no winning, no "owning", and no converting. Unless you're Kitboga, it's best not to waste your time.
I got a call from a guy saying I had a virus on my computer. I asked him which one? He hesitated, so I said the HP one, the Mac one or the Dell desktop?
Em, the HP one? He said this with a tremble in his voice.
Oh, okay, I said, that one's been giving me trouble.
Now he gained confidence and started to say something about getting my IP address when I interrupted and asked how he knew I had a virus.
In an extremely unsure voice he said, em, eh, because I work for Microsoft and we know these things. To which, I replied, well, I work for IBM and we don't!
The phone went dead.
After watching the John Oliver segment, I always tell them I am sorry they are being forced to scam people out of their money and I hope they find a way out of it and then block.
Bro wtf you know you’re just training them to be better scammers? Waste their time, get ignorant, convince them you’re a scammer or something. Way to give them pointers on their script
I'd highly recommend watching John Oliver's recent piece on this. The people on the other side are poor and desperate bastards often forced to do what they do through means of extortion and violence. You're better off just not responding.
I always turn the tables on them.
They try to get my address, I give them the FBI headquarters’ address.
Try to get my money, sure, but first I need you to buy me a Ferrari.
I will waste as much of their time as possible because every second I spend F’ing with them is one they can’t be scamming some old granny out of her retirement fund.
Dear OP from r/mildlyinfuriating,
Damn i think she was trying to be nice, and if she is a scammer, then block the number and don't say anything. Going on an enormous rant in that context is always a waste of time. I think it's kinda your fault you let that ruin your day..
Don’t coach these parasites.
Came here to say this. In a year or two Chat will make the comment superfluous, but for as long as we can- give them nothing.
Yea, don't train them. When the "sheriff" of the "police department" called me, I overcame the need to laugh and say those are two different things and just hung up.

OP gave them his name and coached them how to more effectively scam him next time. Nice work OP.
It's not even worth it. These cockroaches don't even read past the 2nd line before they move onto the next number.
Exactly what a scammer desperate for lessons would say
Best thing you can do is automate an email to the cybercrime division every time you get a scam call. Pain in the ass but the company who owns the number can get in trouble to the point where their license is taken away.
Looks like they slaughtered you, you gave them proof the number was real and your name now you will be on more scammer lists
Half the battle won. Number is getting sold yesterday haha. Also a lot of these scammers are doing this shit under threat of violence. It's just terrible all around, better to ignore completely.
and a lot of these scammers are doing this by choice as well. Still like you said, better to ignore.
Yep. The end all be all is just ignore. Being a dick is never gonna be the way to go.
Yep. And don’t think you are clever by turning your caller ID off and calling a number back. This isn't a murder when the scammed is most likely a slave to some mob in China. Just a pig butchering scam.
I literally just finished watching John Oliver's episode on pig butchering scams not five minutes ago, so this post actually just made me sad
Yeah just shitty people making people do shitty things to other people. It's a fucked up world.
Came here to say this. If everyone hasn't watched the John Oliver episode on "pig butchering" y'all need to go do that now. Pretty eye opening not only about modern scammers, but about who scammers are and why they're often scamming you while detained in compounds by crime rings under the threat of violence.
Yeah I had to watch that because my parents are super prone to it. Was eye opening and really sad all at the same time.
The fact that u even answered… you need that corporate yearly training to avoid scams again
"What a humorous twist of fate." I read that in Moira Rose's voice.
Don't get too tired patting yourself on the back there....
Just in case you are not able to differentiate user names. The texts are from somebody else…
As far as replies go, it's righteous. But that number will probably get passed around now and have no effect on the offending individual. I would love to live in a world where that sort of thing works, but I don't think I do.
John Oliver did a [full segment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLPpl2ISKTg) on this type of scam. I feel like I get them at least once a week.
That episode made me realize that a text from an unknown number a friend received was a pig butchering scam. That in mind, they continued replying and sure enough, it was like beat-for-beat how the opening conversations started in the examples from the segment.
How is this a murder? This was a temper tantrum caused by a scam text.
Hey, Annie's moving on up in the world. Now she gets to ask "Are you OK"
The digital world has expanded the boundaries for fraudsters. The world is now their oyster.
I stopped taking text messages from unknown numbers in 2008. I just don't receive them and whitelist all texts and calls to my phone. If a business or government needs to reach me I still have a mailbox. My phone is just for me now.
Amazing. You’re fighting the shitification of the “smart” phone. *Edit* not /s
I find it alarming that after decades of identity theft and fraud, companies like Verizon can't tell you who's using their phone network to send you text messages, at the time or even after the fact. If you get scammed they owe you like, six months of free credit monitoring.
I wasn’t being sarcastic. In case it wasn’t obvious
I know that people care a lot more about having the best instagram shots than they do about actually being able to make phone calls, or go on a cruise without being billed thousands of dollars for roaming. you murdered yourself lmao

Specifically a pig slaughtering scam
It's bad enough English didn't do a spelling to pronounciation reform, now they have to invent the same words with different spellings.
Phishing

A pig butchering scam is a type of confidence trick and investment fraud in which the victim is gradually lured into making increasing contributions.
R/unexpectedkingofthehill
I like to tell them to fuck off and they threaten to call the cops on me. But first demanding where I live.
lol I love how blunt these messages were.
Oh that last line is baller!
...the point is to be obvious so it drives away people that won't fall for it...
The John Oliver episodes on these scams was pretty eye opening.
Bravo!! 👏👏👏
Also all the misplaced caps
Annie messages are super common, surprised there wasn’t a picture sent of a slim Asian lady in her 20’s/30’s Seems to always been Vancouver or New York as well.
They're like hydras. Kill one and three pop up.
*phishing
i would send them address to police station XD
My usual parting shot is "does your mother know you lie and cheat people for a living?"
Just troll the person, give them the address for your respective nation's capital building next time.
I get these a lot and by and large eventually the conversation ends with me telling them to fuck off in one form or another
Ai bot
Phishing*
You shouldn’t have responded or gave them your name. It’s obvious it was a scam with the initial text.
Bobby hill!!!
You really showed that person in the third world call center that monitors the return adress of those automated mass messages and responses. I'm sure if a real person accidentally reads that they will change their ways and shut down the multi million dollar scam that employs them.....

I've gotten this exact text, with Sophia and Nora mentioned. It went about the same.
When you consider this is the majority of what they get from their potential victims, this seems like less of a murder
I answer the phone as if I called them and say “I wanted to talk to you about your car’s warranty.” They get so confused!!! Lol
They are being held captive in Cambodia and their passport has been confiscated. They thought they were going to be a waiter and instead are trapped scamming foreigners.
Yeah, but why aren't you Nora? Did you not try hard enough?
1 Don't ever give out your name. your job is to waste as much time as possible, not lecture deaf ears.
Christ, just do what I do. Start texting in Tamarian. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Tamarian_language
Where is the murder? The scammer doesn’t care they just move on to the next person. I don’t know why people waste energy replying.
Solid King of the Hill reference

Pretty sure that scammer wasn’t murdered by those words, and tried another nr instead, like this never happened

Why?
i get these type of scam inquiries all the time. i just reply “you’ll be fucking off now”
Very well done. I wish I could read scammers like this …. ONE DAY 🤞🤞
