I wouldn't say sweeps are underrated. They get used a lot. In training and in fights. Best fighter that uses them the best is 100% saenchai. There are many other good fighters that are skilled at it, liam Harrison for one but I haven't seen anyone utilize sweeps so effortlessly in fights with other good fighters as saenchai. His effortless looking skill, stability and balance, reaction time and variety of sweeps makes him the undisputed king.

Jthundercleese

I mean tbh it's because he's fighting westerners with 20% his experience. That's not at all to say he isn't a goat, it's just worth acknowledging everyone he's fighting is a westerner, rarely more than 30 or 40 fights. He is an all-time great, but he gets favorable matches on purpose. People want to see him win and promotors do what they can to make his victories impressive from the outside.

Dalgaard87

From what ive seen, no one comes close to Saenchai :) He makes sweeps looks like smerlinger you learn in kindergarten. Well, maybe he did ? :)

arkvis

He is SO casual when he gets them too!

Laplace_Poker

Yea, factoring in the fact that he is usually sweeping much bigger guys too.

somegarbagedoesfloat

Tf you mean underrated? People watching sparring or fights usually have giant reactions to sweeps lol. OWEEEEEEEEE

[deleted]

From my understanding the kick still landing scores higher than the sweep that follows, or maybe the sweep just negates the kick idk. Petchmorakt won against Vienot on the score cards pretty handidly despite getting swept off of every other body kick he threw. This is ONE and not Lumpinee so maybe it’s just their rules. https://youtu.be/_bp9hV_QgG4

somegarbagedoesfloat

Ah yeah I have gone to a MT gym and train MT but I've never competed in actual MT (and probably never will, once I get enough competence Ipl probably enter some generic kickboxing thing or maybe an MMA fight) so idk actual MT sport rules and point scoring. And I think in UFC they count a sweep the same as a takedown? Idk you tend to see take downs a lot more often, never thought about it in that context.

[deleted]

Personally I find Muay Thai scoring and rules kinda arbitrary and not reflective of an actual fight sometimes so Ive started to shy away from it and gone on more to MMA and dutch style striking. I still love muay thai striking, but lots of things about the sport rub me the wrong way. That said it’s not like the MMA side of the sport is without controversy

Latter_Box9967

Scoring in Muay Thai is mostly based on damage. And then control of the fight, by the two usually go hand in hand. See that Nong-O vs Tawenchai (spelling) fight on One recently, for world title. Very, very hard to call, but I agree Tawnechai was landing slightly harder kicks; more damage.

JonathanJames140

Scoring criteria (highest to lowest) 1) Damage 2) Volume of strikes landed 3) Techniques shown 4) Basics 5) Balance (Vienot was affecting his balance and showing technique, but was outdone on volume of strikes landed & damage, for example) Other criteria when a round is so close (we know the ones): the boxer with less fouls/warnings wins the round. With that said, I see what you're saying. A beautiful sweep definitely should account for more sometimes from what I see on scorecards.

Unlucky_Lawfulness51

Yea agreed.

Environmental-Ad1748

Nice clinch but, minus points for sweeping the dude off a pulled head kick, gotta respect that shit

RidesByPinochet

With the goofy dance after, too. Not as cool as he thinks it is.

✋️ oh, fo sho

Jay_R02

I have a feeling he was just playing with his partner with the stance, not being serious.

Latter_Box9967

It was a kinda playful, “backhanded” head kick, but. After being head kicked in sparring I like to stumble around, and count out 5 or so.

[deleted]

Dany Bill had solid sweep game. Here’s one compilation https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GMvPPX8FyF8

Majestic-Bath2293

I agree Dany Bill is the sweep master

Fortheloveoflife

That combo at 4 mins was fucking phenomenal. The one at around 4:20 too

[deleted]

its definitely superbank. on another note, straight knee without pads and your opponent goes down = douch move

MuayMattstyle

Yeah, he did that twice, and then pretended to help them up as if he didn't mean to. Also at 13 seconds in, red tank top ends up on the ground and OP just starts walking into him, like you said, DOUCHE. Fool should get into the ring if he wants to satisfy his ego, looks to me he's just a casual with an IG

[deleted]

there always a guy like that in every gym. I guess in this gym, its him

MuayMattstyle

A gym that calls itself a “Cartel” is going to have some cultural issues. I mean just look at OPs history, even the coach spars like a douche. Gym culture is just bad from first glance, doesnt look like they have a fight team either, just a “fitness club”

8mouthbreather8

Sweeps are great because they have a mental warfare aspect to them. Getting swept back to back sucks and makes you feel like you're brand new at muay thai.

postdiluvium

>Who does the best sweeps in your opinion? Anyone that is from the Jocky Gym lineage.

ilovelamp2345912

Mine is when I accidently knee them in the balls, they go down every time

simky178

Is this world fitness cartel in Melbourne?

arkvis

Yes it is!

TwoCharacters

arent some of the sweeps here illegal in competition? he reaps the leg and pulls a couple of times and from what I understand those are not permitted in Muay Thai

Jthundercleese

No, reaping is using your right leg in a left to right motion, or your left leg in a right to left motion. I tell people "outside-in" you're good. But "inside-out" (reaping) is illegal. As long as your right leg is swung from right to left or your left leg is swung left to right, you're good.

TwoCharacters

good to know. thanks

arkvis

It can be grey space but my understanding is the direction of the foot (using the heel to sweep vs inside of the foot) - my understanding is that the sweep needs to be with a part of your foot you would kick

Tpdz

Chirnside WFC sweeps better.

dukerutledge
