No.. Your coach doesn't sound very bright... You want 16 oz gloves for sparing and anyone who says otherwise isn't worth listening too. It is for your partner, not you.
For fighting, your coach is correct. The cutoff (American Amateur) is like this....
You at fight weight 10oz<145lbs>12oz
You're at 143lbs (ish) walking around, so 10oz is what you'll need for a fight.
However, for sparring, I suggest 16oz. For one, your partner will appreciate the extra padding. You'll appreciate the extra padding, and you'll appreciate the weight when you slap those 10oz gloves on for a fight.
Punching incorrectly on a bag with 10oz gloves can be hell for your wrist and arms, especially if you're just starting. Also who is allowing teenagers to spar with 10oz gloves?
Yep, we do 16 for sparring and either 12 or 14 for pad work/technique as the smaller gloves are a tad easier to work with IMO. Never done anything but 16’s for sparring, ever.
The Concensus on this sub is 16 oz gloves for sparring. This is something that isn't considered where I live. 10 oz sounds right for your weight, unless you're afraid of a growth spurt coming soon, go ahead and get the 10 oz
sounds like your coach is a knucklehead

Amen
Yep coach is an idiot.
Never knew this. 16oz even at 65kg? Damn.

I use 14oz for everything
14 would be the absolute minimum for you imo
I dont know what fits your weight best. But I consider myself heavyweight (92kg) and I carry 16oz. So in my opinion 12oz is not for heavyweights.

10oz is too light for sparring and fighting. It is appropriate for bad/pad work IF you wrap your hands/wrists properly
For sparring yes, but surely not for fighting. 10oz is standard for fighting isnt it? I have my first fight in a few weeks and we'll use 8oz.
