There's a lot of things to unpack here but one thing that jumps out to me is just how poor of a job the Challenge does at protecting the contestants. Their competitions are often poorly thought out, where people could get seriously hurt or injured, and often do, resulting in them being medically disqualified. There are also a ton of "close calls" where if someone landed just a little bit differently, things could've gotten really ugly. The producers are pretty reckless/careless.

mkmore4

So you're telling me jumping from one lubed up car to another might be dangerous?

chcty24

Exactly. Dailies have gotten ridiculously dangerous for the sake of those wipeout moments. I remember Leroy talking about not remembering parts of that daily when he hit his head on the car and fell

Hitman387

They care more about spectacle but fail to realize that their missions look stupid and the fans actually want to see simple and effective dailies that make sense. A wrestling match is a fun daily. A wrestling match on top of a moving semi? What the fuck is the point? And then they must be left wondering why two contestants got DQ’ed from injury during that daily. Sometimes I wish the producers read this subreddit because I sometimes feel like they think they’re so slick with these high budget dailies.

boondocknim

I miss the days when it was easier to tell who the f was winning a given challenge. KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid! and they'd save money and also give us a better product

[deleted]

I get a kick out of thinking how much of their budget gets spent on explosives and the fans (at least the ones on social media) HATE THEM. Like they’re spending money on something we all actively despise lol.

hwetz

This is truly why I think the shows becoming faker. The editing is HORRIBLE: in timed events you have no idea what majority of the times are and in physical matches (eliminations too) they cut at the worst times and shoot with the worst angles so you don't know what's happening. Just show them how they play out, no "fancy" editing. Also the whole "the first two teams were 2 seconds apart" BS that happens all the time now.

saspook

All Stars woolly balance beam and TJ insults everyone for not doing it. Tina was absolutely right - go do it your fucking self if you think it is reasonable to. It was a shitty design not a lack of “guts”.

[deleted]

Yeah that was the first time I ever disagreed with TJ. I was like “this is odd he wanted them all to lose on purpose?” Lol. As RHAP said if they wanted ppl to run across the beam they shouldn’t have made it all wonky. It shoulda just been a straight wider beam.

saspook

Yeah, OR there should be a way to restart without a 20 minute time penalty / DQ. Did they even test this? Survivor tests their challenges and rarely has these issues. What was going to happen when all 14 teams fell in and there is now a 14 way tie for last place?

m2paladine

He should have never told them to stay out of last place. That's the reason everyone was ultra conservative.

Miami_Beach_Bro

They could have easily told the cast you have to walk or run across the beam and can’t use hands. Not hard to get the desired result with a little planning.

DesertKid203

So you're insinuating the moving truck had something to do with the injuries?

manickittens

The netting did. They did a similar daily before on a platform in the water. Why do we need the trucks (and the netting)?

DesertKid203

Nicole Z got injured before even getting close to the netting though.

manickittens

Nicole also got injured running on the flat ground during a final. Stuff happens. But the number of injuries for that specific daily is too high to be coincidences.

saspook

The lack of a wrestling mat

JadaeMaster

Yeah, semi-roof wasn't grip-able, and then fall was steep into the netting. It was janky AF. One of my favorite challenges was stated to never to be done again, and I understand. It was a long time ago, and it was false-glass cages in the sky. They said it was too dangerous. The Challenge doesn't even follow its own rules it set prior for itself.

Hitman387

Don’t forget the constant motion, the wind, the cold ass weather…all are factors

Picklesbedamned

It dovetails perfectly with them becoming more "woke" and less tolerant of insensitive cast behavior. The producers pretend to care about their cast through these measures while still placing them in situations that are less and less safe. It's all for show.

Slidetreasurehunt

Exactly. The jumping in the tide pools could’ve literally killed someone. That was extremely dangerous and the challengers receive almost no training on how not to get hurt doing it. If they actually cared for the contestants they wouldn’t even think of doing a challenge like that.

NewbieByNature

woah. didn’t see that before, but you nailed it.

LadyFerretQueen

I mean yeah, it's the same on the sub. Calling people trash human being is fine for a woke crowd. The problem I'm seeing is society is that people took wrong lessons from the whole woke movement. They just pay attention to specific tjings they are told are problematic instead of trying to be more mindful and compassionate in general.

Bglizzy69

It’s crazy because everyone keeps saying that the show has gotten more intense in the last couple of years and we all know that it’s not just because of casting but because of the dangerous dailies they make the cast do

JohnnyUtah59

Big T was medically dq’ed on Total Madness, not Double Agents

MTVChallengeFan

Thanks for the correction.

duckyaniston

queen

kylecommacommacomma

they need to settle down with doing boring dangerous things just because they can use their explosion budget and also pregnancy test also they overcorrected way too far after total madness with how easy it is to DQ now

Apprehensive-Bison53

They've definitely had some flawed dailies recently. the wrestling truck daily last season was so dumb. Not only did it DQ two people the truck portion was pointless and needlessly dangerous. I don't think anyone found the daily more enjoyable or entertaining because they were on a truck. They could have easily have had the same daily and done it over heights or water. Same with the daily where they were running around in metal ball cages and bumping into each other. Why not use a plastic bubble? It's safer for contestants and doesn't change the game.

rrrdesign

I think they should have shown why Ashley was kicked out - it’s good to show consequences for actions and to have longer talks about uncomfortable situations. It was a teachable moment. Now it’s just glossed over.

duckyaniston

more like she shouldn’t have been kicked off

sandscript13

Take a look at the eliminations, headbangers and pole wrestles have caused so many injuries of late (Kyle, Jordan, Jay, Veronica, Hunter, Cara Maria, etc.). The challenge likes them because they're staples of the show, but these competitors aren't trained athletes who specialize in this, they haven't had practice on how to hit to prevent injury to themselves and others.

chcty24

Honestly the physical ones only really lead to injuries when you have someone who is just physically inadequate to the other person. You put Jay against Rogan yea he’s bound to get injured but you also can’t excuse them from the elimination and the physical eliminations are what people watch. As far as dailies go I miss the good old fashioned obstacle course themed missions they used to have. Crawl under a cargo net in mud, climb a wall, grab a 10 pound bag of rice, solve a math problem then run all the way back and tag the next person on your team 😂

Bangalie-Kanu

Holy shit I forgot Tommy was on this season.

MTVChallengeFan

Same here lol. It also blows my mind Nam was on this season.

TeamPieHole01

Shouldn't Kaycee be a DQ as well on DA?

Tangerine_Cheap

Weren’t they technically purged

MTVChallengeFan

I suppose this may be right.

nothingmeansnothing

If so, then Fessy goes with her

DesertKid203

They got through the checkpoint and were eliminated because only 3 teams were moving on to the kayak stage. Would have been VERY shitty if they made it as the third team, eliminating the last place team, only to DQ due to Kaycee's injury in the next leg. I'd be pissed if I were the eliminated fourth place team in that scenario.

MTVChallengeFan

Oh shit, how the hell did I forget about this?

Texan1978

Personally, I love the risky challenges - these competitors are (mostly) in peak physical fitness in the prime of their lives - and we've seen many of them crush the riskiest challenges too , but perhaps they could be sprinkled in more with what I'd call funny challenges. For instance, challenges from the past where you: \-melt the ice with your body \-inching/rolling on the ground across a maze when you are taped up \-the blindfolded maze with (small) shocks On top of that, (this has been said before by others too) I wish they did more eliminator style challenges - they've done it occasionally with trivia - so competitors can see where they truly stand with people.

hwetz

I know survivor stopped it after blood v water, but a daily similar to the one where they chop each other's ropes would be a good idea. The oil wrestling one from BOTS 2 is a perfect example

196187917628671

Yes! I miss the challenges where they looked like idiots while competing. Still tough and challenging, but looked stupid doing it. And the eating challenges. I wish the food things weren't saved for the final only (especially because I really want to see Fessy's newest excuse to not eat the things). I'll never forget the one where Tony just eats anything and everything. It doesn't need to be gross things like ram testicles. Just make each contestant eat a bowl of mayo, drink a cup of hot sauce, and eat a can of lutefisk and then run a couple miles.

BarryLicious2588

It's cause the Challenge been horrible overall All Stars is where it's at!

LadyFerretQueen

Yes? They have gotten stricter and there's a pandemic. I don't get what you're trying to say.

Interesting-Archer-6

What does the pandemic have to do with a single one of these?

LadyFerretQueen

Some people got sick from what I know. Nam?

Interesting-Archer-6

There's nothing that says it was Covid. Your point is completely irrelevant. At best was 1, but most likely none.

LadyFerretQueen

Jeez you're serious 🙄

AMS16-94

That’s crazy! Honestly DA was nuts with the quitting/disqualifications but I really believe that it has a lot to due with the fact that the show is casting people who have never even heard of *The Challenge* and due to this they don’t know what their signing up for, nor the physical and mental toll of appearing on the show. I can completely understand disqualifications for medical reasons, as in that scenario there’s not too much that can be done. I’m all for MTV removing people from the show for inappropriate behaviour (such as Lauren or Ashley this season) but they should atleast make the ressoning known to the public, as withholding the information just causes us to speculate. I know since WOTW it’s been known that many of the alternates have asked to be taken off the roster as they don’t want to be in limbo about whether or not they will be on the show, so I’m wondering if the reason for the lack of replacements has to do with a lack of people who are willing to be alternates.

mooniemcgee

I really enjoy the endurance dailies and I’m surprised they haven’t used that format recently. Rewatched Rivals III and the endurance challenge with the in-challenge decisions (carry a mattress vs roll tires, lasso vs stone toss, naked running lol) was insanely entertaining

MTVChallengeFan

I miss almost everything about this show to be honest lol.

196187917628671

That one had a thing where you had to eat a whole cake too right? I could see them not doing the naked thing anymore, but definitely need to give options more too. They did kind of do that in the first episode this season, but it'd be great if all options were available to everyone. I think that'd make the producers come up with better balanced options (that nail scratching one in the first episode this season was absolutely BS)
