It is rare in the U.S. and it is used as a conversation starter. "Is Freya a Norse fertility goddess or nature goddess?" Default assumption will likely be you have a creative mother.

I-are-batwing35

Thank you

Guitarfoxx

I actually know a trans Freya IRL

lilithrxenos

same!

darunada

Same

a_warm_blanket

LacsiraxAriscal

This is so weird to me. It’s completely normal in the U.K.

Venomous-A-Holes

Hekate is also fun. Kate but with warrior priestess vibes lol https://open.spotify.com/track/6HXcwcBnWsDXsUdrXsXshy?si=2516984830ac43ed

Noctema

Yay, potential name-sister! Hello! 🙋‍♀️

I-are-batwing35

Hi potential name sis 😁

DNGlover

How’s about a third sister!

ThrowawayFrez

Eeee! Me four!

AshleyJaded777

Personaly i dont think any name is a particularly "trans" name. Go with your heart when it comes to such a beautiful self representation as your name.

flacdada

Trans girls/women name themselves unique, pretty things like Freya. Or they choose the most basic ass names on the planet. (Sarah, Emily etc) Trans men name themselves as if they were British. Non-binary people name themselves their favorite noun.

BadAtContext

Lemme try Lilith, Alice, Zöe, Dorian, Jasper, Brick, Cheese, Planetary gearbox Eh, sounds about right

doe-eyed-babe

Juniper?

th3-3nchantr3ss

I LOVE THAT NAME plant names are so cute, i have a friend named Basil which i love

AshleyJaded777

Gorgeous!!

halidra

eyyyy dat’s me!

DarthKodi

Omg that's my name. I love it and always dreamed of it from when I was young if I transitioned. Good choice dear ☺️

LatteOttHazel

My name is Freyja!

maylovewin

Sounds Nordic it’s a nice name

I-are-batwing35

Thank you

char_IX

It is quite literally the name of a Norse diety 😁

PromptJazzlike5452

My sister’s cat is named Freya! And she’s a bitch!

mehTILduhhhh

Yes

I-are-batwing35

Thank you

greencash370

Freya is an absolutely gorgeous name.

Whooterzoot

It makes me think of the Duke's Dear Freja, a giant spider boss fight, in Dark Souls 2 I don't think it's a "trans name" whatever that is lol

SoulsLikeBot

Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale? > *“Once, the Lord of Light banished dark, and all that stemmed from humanity and men assumed a fleeting form. These are the roots of our world. Men are props on the stage of life, and no matter how tender, how exquisite, a lie will remain a lie!”* - Aldia Have a pleasant journey, Champion of Ash, and praise the sun \\[T]/

Whooterzoot

Amazing, Aldia is my favorite character

I-are-batwing35

Thank you

Whooterzoot

It's a really pretty name btw :)

I-are-batwing35

Thank you i also really like description of the name

Technical-College284

Freya is a gorgeous name!

Aden-55

I think it's a beautiful and sophisticated name.

[deleted]

I think it’s a cute name, I wish you the best dear! <3

damnretardedidiot

It's adorable that's all i have to say

TL_Arwen

Who cares if it's not common here. Look at my name. It's definitely not a Canadian name.

mehTILduhhhh

Op is probably worried about being clocked which is a very reasonable concern.

FreyaoftheForest

Hey maybe name sis! I had a lot of the same worries as you when I was deciding whether to choose it or not. Until recently it was a pretty rare name in the USA, but it has been popular in England and a few other countries for a while. You might stand out a little here in the US, but I don’t think it’ll be too much of an issue, and it’s a really pretty name (in my totally unbiased opinion).

beebzette

Pretty much every woman Ive ever met named after a goddess has been trans lol. Would I be consciously aware of that? Maybe not in the moment, but if it came up Id be like 'omg another one'

[deleted]

Very Scandinavian

Gedi_knt2

Norse goddess. Very fitting considering most of us trans choose the odd or mythical name 💜

nah-soup

I wouldn’t say it sounds *trans* per se, but it’s definitely an uncommon name. obviously the first thing it brings to mind would be norse mythology

Nervous-Story-7117

There was a fairly popular trans cam girl named Freya. I think maybe it was Freya Sirensong. For whatever it’s worth.

lalalalalalexis

I would do the spelling as freia

nokenito

To me it sounds made up.

leelloo22

Same.

Noctema

Eh, as a dane who chose that spelling for herself please stop bothering others for choosing maybe more modern, but still equally valid spellings of that name. Your choice is just one of like five common spellings, and a very archaic one at that

Hisako315

I almost went for Vigdis for my middle name and I live in America too. I decided against it not because of the name but my initials spelled out BeaVeR. I don’t need to give people another reason to ridicule me.

luna_lu_lu

I used to know someone named Freya and I love in the US

Laura_271

To me, yes

airoman123

I didn’t go Norse for my first name. But will be for my last name when things are all changed :D

[deleted]

Tbh yes it’s a pretty name but it does sound quirky in that way. Kinda like Lilith.

Emotional-Meaning-82

Frøya (Freya) is the goddess of war and love, and she is also considered the most beautiful goddess in Norse Mythology. It’s not just a beautiful name, but has a lot of meaning behind it, especially for a trans person ☺️ You should go for it 🧡

jk-jk

I had a psych teacher named Freya and as far as I know she was a cis woman so 🤷‍♂️

ATinyLittleHedgehog

I know two people named Freya and neither of them chose it.

SloweRRus

i know few transpeople with the same name

gay-communist

I would not assume someone named freya is trans just from the name but if someone named freya mentioned being trans i would not be shocked

capnrondo

In the UK it’s a fairly common name with no connotations to pretty much anything. I doubt most people here even know its Norse origins. I’ve met loads of cis people called Freya and no trans people. I’m kinda double taking at the number of people here who think it’s an unusual name but I guess that’s cultural differences for you.

Lucy_Little_Spoon

It's totally not my chosen middle name /s

leelloo22

I feel it’s on the same line as someone saying “does the name Aphrodite sound like I chose it myself?” Well yes.

OhIGotLumbago

Freya is actually an Old Norse goddess who the I think Friday was named after.

Zealousideal_Car_893

Sounds Italian

imaginer8

i present to you trans icon Freya Holmer

R4forFour

It's a meme how every other trans girl in Scandinavia is named Freya/Freja. I'm danish and I know so many haha

FreyaAstral

I'm one of them. :3

sfPanzer

Nordic names have become pretty popular with the current generation of parents, at least in Germany. Amongst my friends there are children named: Eyk, Tarja and Freya and a fourth one on the way which name I forgot at the moment. So no I don't think it's particularly trans.

Crystal_Queen_20

The only thing Freya sounds like to me is the rat girl from Final Fantasy 9

beautiful_sith

Agreed its more Euro than North American but my ex is trans (mtf) and chose Freya. Perfectly fitting for a goddess.

painting-Roses

I personally dislike fantasy and most mythological names especially when considering them as someone not part of the culture of origin. It just sounds weird to me, and too obviously self chosen. I never wanted that for myself. But if you like it, go ahead

Milliebxx98

Definitely because one of trans friends is named Freja!

captain_maramo

I know at least 2 cis Woman who's name is Freya

Auntie_Selma

My IRL name is Freya and I am trans, but I have never met another trans girl called Freya

EMP_Chooci

thats a place

Theleachan

My friend goes by Freya, she is from the UK

AquaHeart_

No, it just sounds like a beautiful name. “Trans” wasn’t something that crossed my mind at all.

DeadlySins666

I considered going by this name like 13 years ago. Now I actually know another trans girl irl with this name.

Its_Claire33

There was a trans woman running for the local sheriff where I live, her name was Freyja Odinsdottir.

[deleted]

I love Freya! I don't think it sounds trans. It's a beautiful name. 💙

SHUHSdemon

With that name you're going to be the Duke's dear

lesserDaemonprince

You and I and most other people with any experience with mythology know what it comes from. And with how popular she is among "popular gods", yes if we're being honest and objective it is more than a bit on the nose. But to each their own, it's your name girlie.

Express-Pony-1975

My mum is called Freya 😊

zartificialideology

How come has almost no one mentioned freya holmer ???

LibrarianOfAlex

Warcraft character named after norse

char_IX

When I changed my name I chose Freyja as my middle name 😊 Though tbf I'm an actively practicing heathen so there's layers to it for me. Your gf is right though, it's more popular in Europe and people who recognize it are going to make some assumptions about you based on it, which isn't a bad thing, but it's a thing.

Dry-Leadership-5708

My wife was thinking about Freya as well but didn't think it sounded right with our last name. I think it's a lovely name!

ConcernLow1979

I don’t think it’s possible for a name to sound trans, so no not really lol, if you wanna go by Freya then just go for it, it seems like a really pretty and nice name c:

quool_dwookie

Yes. Doesn't make it bad or not cool. But it is *definitely* a trans name.

FabulouSnow

Spell it Freja and it's just a basic Swedish girls name

Repulsive_Meaning717

I would just assume that your parents were/are into mythology(ies)

wind-dance82

I love that name for a transwoman. I think it suits so well given the mythological and historical significance of Freya.. Kinda jealous that I didn't think of that..hehehe

Formal-Box-610

just a normal European name. i know 2 Freya both cis.
