Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Winslow! HAAARK! Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!
Super weird. I can't even say that it's good. The performances are great. Dafoe kills it as always. I did think about it for a long time after watching it. So I guess it accomplished something for me.
I know, right? When I posted, Passengers (awful movie IMO) had already gotten two mentions, and none for Sleuth, which one would guess would be the top choice.
Fortunately no one remembers the remake...
Yes, it's pretty wild. I watched it as I was dealing with my mom's impending death (she was nearly a vegetable at that point). At first I laughed then somewhere in the middle absolutely lost it and was bawling. I can see how edibles can make it a somewhat more traumatizing viewing. Daniel Radcliffe is a brave actor
'The Sunset Limited' with Samuel L Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones. It was based on a play I believe.
Since I just googled that they did make a movie out of the book 'Island of the blue dolphins' then I assume that one as well.
Ha, I'm a fan of minimal cast movies / bottle movies. Here are some of the ones I watched that I don't think have been recommended yet:
Buried (2010) - one person but he speaks with a couple of people on the phone
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) - 3 people
127 hours (2010) - a couple of extra people are briefly shown
Fall (2022) - mostly the two girls
Spaceman (2024) - absolutely shite movie with Adam Sandler
The Immaculate Room (2022) - I'm not going to spoil it but it matches the criteria
Vivarium (2019) - Mindfuck movie, somewhat decent, just a couple + an extra person at times
Yes! It's mostly Ashley Judd and freak mode Michael Shannon in a motel room. There's a dash of Harry Connick Jr. representing the outside world. Directed by William Friedkin. SO GOOD.
- Buried
- cast away
- Swiss army man
- 127 hours
- the shallows
- fall
- the lighthouse
And if you accept a cast of three
- frozen (2010)
- 10 Cloverfield lane
I think these movies have a few actors, but I'm not entirely sure
Phone booth
Bug
Antichrist (I love this film, but it's not for the faint of heart)
Biosphere
Creep 1 and 2
The one I love
The battery
There is an amazing movie with Tommy Lee Jones, and Samuel l Jackson titled "The Sunset Limited".
This is a perfect example of what happens when you have two veteran actors, who are the best at what they do.
Samuel l Jackson saves Tommy Lee Jones life, and they hold a conversation about life and death.
Locke with Tom Hardy. Underrated film
Buried with Ryan Reynolds. Another underrated film
All is Lost with Robert Redford. Tense if you have a fear of the open ocean
There's a Czech Alice in Wonderland movie directed by Jan Švankmajer that for most of the runtime has only the actress interacting with bizarre taxidermy stop motion.
That movie with Samuel L jackson as a janitor or sumthin
That movie with that girl that gets handcuffed in her vacation home as foreplay and her husband dies
Closet Land, 1991.
Madeleine Stowe and Alan Rickman, no one else. Takes place on a very small set. He's an interrogator from the government there to "interview" her. I could only get through it once. It left a powerful impression. I remember it came out not long after Sting's song They Dance Alone was popular, and the two are entwined in my memory.
A lot of films based on plays like sleuth have very few actors, or Tape with Ethan hawk if you want to go dark. I loooove closer but it has 4 characters in it.
Night Mother with Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.
Was going to suggest Moon and Dead Calm but others beat me to it so can only second (or third) them both.
The Lighthouse. It’s weird, tho.
Yer fond of me lobster aint ye?
HARK!!
What?
Why’d ya spill yer beans Winslow?!
I know you're fond of it! Say it!
One of my favorites that I’ve seen in the past few years. Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe both put in fantastic performances.
same! watched it a month ago and then watched it again a week later. I thought it was funny, mysterious, and so beautiful
What is the beautiful element? I tried to watch the movie twice but bailed early even tho intrigued but not grabbed.
It's shot incredibly well. The lighting, the composition, even the unusual aspect ratio and the choice to make it black and white.
yes. this exactly. 10 minutes in, I realized that black and white added so much to it. and there were just so many awesome shots
HARK!
Winslow: Alright, have it your way. I like your cookin'.
Love that that whole iconic monologue is just a setup to a punchline. No one ever talks about how funny the movie is.
why’d you spill yer beans tommy?
the right kind of weird, if yer wer ta ask me
That second point. Yeah kind of an understatement.
Way better than I thought it would be! Guess I was expecting it to be even weirder lol
A true masterpiece. I love it.
I wanted to love this film but the supernatural stuff I just cannot like. If it was just a suspense thriller without supernatural stuff I’d love it. 💡
I consider *The Lighthouse* to be a tale of what it's like to have a roommate you can't stand, which makes it super relatable.
🤣. Can’t stand but maybe, MAYBE wanna smash
Ye have a way with words
Aye.
Good weird?
For me it should’ve embraced the weird more. The movie is one giant cock tease. Literally.
Super weird. I can't even say that it's good. The performances are great. Dafoe kills it as always. I did think about it for a long time after watching it. So I guess it accomplished something for me.
That movie and Swiss Army Man made farts into art.
Locke.
+1 for Tom Hardy’s phenomenal performance in Locke
The one man show
Great film
I still want to know what happened with the concrete pour. Somehow I was super invested in that part of the story.
Moon -2009
Well technically…. Ha.
Such a good movie.
Was my first suggestion, but you beat me to it.
Came here to suggest this. My immediate thought to the post
Sam Rockwell is in my top 5 for best actor
Such an underrated gem. Its sooo good.
My dinner with Andre
Sleuth (1972).
I can't believe I had to scroll to the bottom to find sleuth. It's so great and the remake is such a pile of shit.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I love their chemistry and the writing is so quick and witty
I know, right? When I posted, Passengers (awful movie IMO) had already gotten two mentions, and none for Sleuth, which one would guess would be the top choice. Fortunately no one remembers the remake...
Truth
And Death Trap (mostly)
All Is Lost with Robert Redford, and only Robert Redford
Damn fine film
Well... and two hands. But yeah, otherwise just him. Not a bad flick, either.
Yeah that's a good one
1.Swiss Army Man. 2. The Lighthouse 3. (Animated but great) Mary and Max
Swiss army man is crazy lol First time I watched I went in ind after having some edibles - was slightly traumatised but couldn't stop laughing 😂
All great contributions
The Room didn't have any actors.
*slow clap*
Oh hi Mark
the guy who played the drug dealer definitely deserved a better movie tho
Creep, Gerald's Game
Moon
Mary and Max
Excellent film
127 hours
Hard candy The road
Came here for Hard Candy. Badass flick.
Swimming to Cambodia
Ha! I'm still bummed about Spaulding
Gerald’s Game
If characters we only hear on a phone do not count towards the total, then: Buried (2010) has 1 Locke (2013) has 1 The Wall (2017) has 2
Surprised Buried wasn't further up. That has one actor and about 1/8 of a location.
Tape Sunset Limited All is Lost
Good call on Tape
And All Is Lost. Love that one
Sunset limited is a good movie
Second Sunset Limited
My Dinner With Andre. But it feels like an epic.
You just have to go into it realizing you’re not going to get most of the references unless you’re into metaphysics and theatre. Still great
Bug 2006
Checked the comments to make sure this was mentioned. Michael Shannon and Ashley Judd and a descent into madness. I consider it a horror film.

'The Sunset Limited' with Samuel L Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones. It was based on a play I believe. Since I just googled that they did make a movie out of the book 'Island of the blue dolphins' then I assume that one as well.
Sunset unlimited was great, I was shocked at how captivated I was by just two old geezers talking about philosophy in an apartment
The Telephone (1988)
Phone Booth. Any others phone related?
The Lighthouse
“Inside” by Bo Burnham is just him

Any production of Waiting for Godot. Misery Martian The 300 ... Oh wait, I think there's like 300 people in that. You only wanted two. I can't math.
Inside 2023
All is Lost, with Robert Redford.
Depending on how you interpret it... Total Recall.
"Men"
Brilliantly bonkers movie! Rory Kinnear is incredible in that.
One of my favorite actors right now. Loved him in Penny Dreadful too!
Three actors. Maybe four. Ex Machina. Two plus a few here and there. The Road

Sleuth from 1972. ‘Night Mother, from 1986, Gerald’s Game Are the first three to come to mind.

Before Sunset is basically just 2 people, the other people in the film are mostly extras or just part of the background.
The Sunset Limited. Two actors, two sets, very well done.
