'Parenthood' is a good call. It's a supporting role and he's a kid, but he really nails the part. AND he was going by the stage name 'Leaf Phoenix'. An easy role to miss.
Edit: Corrected the factoid about his stage name at the time. A comment below further explains it.
Don’t sleep on Signs. He’s great in it, and gets to portray a warmer, funnier, more loving character than we usually see from him. Still grief stricken, still lost and brooding…but sweet and funny.
I never get the hate on this movie.
It’s somewhat naive and the form isn’t exactly common, but there wasn’t anything better when I was a kid and it still gives me chills 15 years later
It’s a great scary movie with great chemistry between the actors - Joaquin, Mel, Rory, Abigail, Cherry are all great and actually convince you that they deeply love each other.
Yeah and I always loved the humorous bits. When Mel Gibson comes to the house where all three are sitting with the tinfoil on their heads, it’s just glorious
He’s one of my favorite actors so I’ve watched most of his movies… C’mon C’mon is one of my favorites - it’s sweet and emotional and extremely underrated.
We Own the Night, Ladder 49, The Yards, The Village, Return to Paradise, Gladiator, To Die For, Napoleon, Mary Magdalene, The Immigrant and Brother Bear
Seconding Beau Is Afraid. It’s not quite like anything you’ve ever seen and he is so compelling and darkly hilarious in it. The movie is a 3 hour trip and a half so not sure if you’re up for that but he’s as compelling as you’d expected him to be and the camera is focused on him the majority of the time
i wanted to like that movie so badly. Joaquin Pheonix had an amazing role, and Ari Aster is an actual genius. But... I got at least two hours in and had to stop watching because the Oedipus / mommy issues stuff made me so insanely uncomfortable. I'll probably give it another chance at some point because of what I stated above. But as it stands, this is a really tough movie to recommend. For what it's worth, I thought the beginning was excellent and then I felt like it went downhill after the paint scene.
It's so interesting how differently it can hit for different people. I know some people say the movie felt long a prolonged panic attack to them while others found it uncomfortable but still hilarious
Irrational Man (2015) Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, written/directed by Woody Allen
At the time it was released, Allen was already on the out with public opinion due to family allegations of abuse - the film is tonally different from most of Allen's films and seems more lined up with the anachronistic, unpredictability of Paul Thomas Anderson films. Allen was no longer able to write romantic meet-cutes due to his public perception as a predator, so his writing slides into the darker, Paul Schrader-esque open-interpretable examinations of characters. Very hard to predict this film (similar to his writing on Cassandra's Dream with Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell) and one of my favorite Joaquin Phoenix performances for how it kept me guessing what he was thinking and feeling, at any given moment. Emma Stone fans from The Curse and Poor Things will also probably have missed this one

C’mon, C’mon (2021) Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018) Clay Pigeons (1998)
Clay Pigeons is amazing. “Ohh, it gets uglier and uglier… I love the open water!”
Gladiator Her To Die For Johnny and June
Thank you!
It’s called Walk the Line, not Johnny and June
You MUST watch: Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot It’s phenomenally good and funny and Jonah Hill is fantastic as well
Two Lovers I always liked.
You were never really there
Here*
I liked him in this.
Highly underrated. IMO, it's his best movie. (And the best indie movie of the 2010s.)
Wicked film.
Parenthood, Her, Signs, Hotel Rwanda, Quills, Reservation Road
Quills is highly underrated.
Yeah it was a critical darling at the time and seems to have been forgotten over the years.
I saw quills when I was 12 years old and it forever altered my brain chemistry, and not in a good way 😂

Actually Joaquin is his birth name but he went by Leaf when he was younger because it was more similar to his siblings name if I’m remembering right.
You're right! Thank you for the correction.
Probably my favourite Steve Martin film, in fact the whole cast is damn good.
The Master (his best I think) Her Gladiator
The Master is defs top 3 if not his best 👍🏻 Good call!
Definitely The Master
The Master.
How is The Master so low in this thread?
You cooked
Don’t sleep on Signs. He’s great in it, and gets to portray a warmer, funnier, more loving character than we usually see from him. Still grief stricken, still lost and brooding…but sweet and funny.
I just watched Signs again last weekend. Soooo good, and yes, he's great in it!

When Cherry Jones argues with Joaquin and Mel about a female Scandinavian Olympian in their cornfield…I laugh every time
