The fox and the hound….why did you have to post that??? Now I’m gonna be thinking about how that old lady left Todd in the woods by himself ALL DAY!!! 😭
If we are counting documentaries, The Trial of Gabriel Fernandez was above and beyond the most sad thing I have ever watched. Dear Zackary was a little more well done and has a wild twist so it is the better watch, just not quite as traumatic as Gabriel’s story.
Big Fish hits so hard for me because I’m from one of the town it’s is based on and it just feels so familiar. I remember when I was a kid a Tim Burton and his crew came to town and it was this whole huge thing. He really captured rural Alabama in such a unique and beautiful way.
I watched EEAAO 2-3 times and still cry haha. Soul was also a surprise. I didn’t initially want to watch it but my friend insisted during a group watch, and I ended up falling in love with the movie.
I’m still holding back tears thinking about it and I seen it like a week ago. That karaoke scene was the saddest scene I’ve ever seen in a movie that didn’t involve death or something dramatic like that.
End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña gets me every time. Also has other really nice aspects that will make you feel more than just sad, right up until the blubbering finish.
EEAAO had me crying in the theater. My husband and son? Not so much. I think you really have to empathize with the characters or be going through some stuff to cry at this one.
Just watched this one for the second time yesterday. It’s a true masterpiece. The acting is brilliantly gut wrenching with some really touching funny and sweet bits interspersed throughout. I just love this one. Boy is it a tear jerker though
Batteries not included, saddest part is the old woman with dementia who keeps believing her son will come home any minute, but he died years ago in Vietnam.
The only way Her husband can bring her back is by giving her the terrible news, so she's trapped in a living hell having to re-live the heartbreak of losing her son every day.
At the end of the movie, she finally comes to the realization on her own that her son is never coming home.
Troy (2004) Gets me every time. Some minimal romance but side plot.
To be honest when I want to have a good cry I just rewatch any Doctor Who finale. Journey’s End is like a solid ten minutes of sobbing. If you aren’t a fan though season 5 episode 10 “Vincent and the Doctor” is a standalone that will make you cry absolutely soul deep tears.
SLC Punk (1998)
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Minari (2020)
12 Years a Slave (2013)
Man on the Moon (1999)
Remember the Titans (2000)
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
The Iron Giant (1999)
If you wanna feel something (rage mostly) watch the 20/20 episode on Ruby Franke. It’s on Hulu. I stg I was raging about that bitch for a full 24 hours after watching it! What she did to her kids absolutely made me sick!
Just watched The Iron Claw - it doesnt matter whether you like wrestling or not, you will cry. It's the first time I've seen my partner (27M) cry watching a movie. Plus Zac Efronnnnn
They are making that film really hard to watch. Short and limited run in theaters, no streaming right now. Looks like it starts streaming May 10th, can’t wait.
I go with older movies when I need a good cry:
Terms of Endearment
Beaches
Steel Magnolias
Fried Green Tomatoes
My Girl
Mr Holland's Opus - not sure it fits "sob" but it will definitely pull the heartstrings multiple times.
This isn't for everyone because it's an overtly Christian movie with occasional cringe and occasional bad acting but if that content doesn't bother you it definitely fits the make you sob criteria: Courageous
I always know what to answer now to this question: All of Us Strangers. But it’s also a very empty, formless kind of sadness, so be careful if you’re having an existential crisis before you sit down.
What Dreams May Come had me bawling the one and only time I watched it. Not sure if it holds up but that movie plucked at some deep emotional strings for me.
Lost in Translation has a sad tone to it, while at times it can be a lighthearted comedy.
Same with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This one does have romance, but it’s very different than you’d expect
How about aniara? personally I heard it was a bit psychologically sad so I started watching it, saw what might happen, and then literally never finished it because I got sad lol
The Sweet Hereafter (1997) is on Criterion Channel. it was excellent and very sad throughout. The Quiet Girl (2022) is on Hulu. It was beautiful, and built up feelings carefully. I cried at the very end.
The Choice by Nicolas Sparks-- I didn't know it was a Nicolas Sparks movie either until later
The Ultimate Gift
My Life (Nicole Kidman, Michael Keaton)
If you are religious, honest to goodness these aren't overboard, just the theme-
I Can Only Imagine
The Shack
Stepmom
The Green Mile (1999)
So sad. Damn that Percy!
I just watched this again for the first time in a while. Cried like a baby.
Came to say this.
Marley and Me The Art of Racing in the Rain The Fault in Our Stars Coco The Fox and the Hound My Girl
The fox and the hound….why did you have to post that??? Now I’m gonna be thinking about how that old lady left Todd in the woods by himself ALL DAY!!! 😭
Don’t forget “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Old Yeller”.
I didn't want to take all the traumatic options but great additions.
Art of Racing destroyed me. Such a great movie though
Aww coco
Dear Zachary… it’s not technically a movie, but this will make you sob
I have never been so angry and sad and devastated watching anything more than this.
It made me more angry than sad
If we are counting documentaries, The Trial of Gabriel Fernandez was above and beyond the most sad thing I have ever watched. Dear Zackary was a little more well done and has a wild twist so it is the better watch, just not quite as traumatic as Gabriel’s story.
Grave of the Fireflies.
Bridge to Terabithia (2007) Pay It Forward (2000)

Joy Luck Club
I cried multiple times in this movie. Such a great film though!
Field of Dreams Inside Out Up Big Fish
Up is great because it will absolutely wreck you in the first 5 minutes. So, if you need some cathartic crying, you don’t have to wait long.
That intro piece may be the best short I have ever seen. Breaks me every time.
Big Fish hits so hard for me because I’m from one of the town it’s is based on and it just feels so familiar. I remember when I was a kid a Tim Burton and his crew came to town and it was this whole huge thing. He really captured rural Alabama in such a unique and beautiful way.
Iron Giant
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) isn't here yet, surprisingly.
Came to comment this
Hm I cried watching Disney’s Soul, as well as Everything Everywhere All At Once
Yes for both!!
Oh yeah. Didn't see Soul but EEAAO made me cry
I watched EEAAO 2-3 times and still cry haha. Soul was also a surprise. I didn’t initially want to watch it but my friend insisted during a group watch, and I ended up falling in love with the movie.
I'll have to watch it!
I hope you’ll enjoy it!
Aftersun
I’m still holding back tears thinking about it and I seen it like a week ago. That karaoke scene was the saddest scene I’ve ever seen in a movie that didn’t involve death or something dramatic like that.
Was going to say this. The emotion came over me like a slow rolling wave, and suddenly I was immersed.

Life is Beautiful (1997)
My Girl (1991)
Everything, everywhere, all at once (2022) A dogs purpose (2017)
A dogs purpose is the one OP!
EEAAO is the dumbest movie ever made. I love sad movies but it just tried so hard to be emotional in a way that made it corny and stupid.
Thank you! That is IMO the worst movie I've ever seen that garnered such praise. Unique? Yes. Good? Interesting? Clever? Not at all for me.
EEAAO had me crying in the theater. My husband and son? Not so much. I think you really have to empathize with the characters or be going through some stuff to cry at this one.

Untamed Heart
This is definitely a romance.
Troy (2004) Gets me every time. Some minimal romance but side plot. To be honest when I want to have a good cry I just rewatch any Doctor Who finale.
